Report: Armed man takes hostages at/near Hillary NH office; WMUR confirms two being held; Update: Released?; Update: Report – Still two hostages being held?; Three total released, suspect ID’d as conspiracy theorist; Update: hostage situation still “fluid,” police logs added, Update: NBC ID’s different suspect, another hostage reportedly released; Local paper publishes new suspect ID: Leeland Eisenberg; suspect in custody

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 30, 2007 01:38 PM

Update 7:13pm Eastern. Guess which network the hostage-taker was trying to contact?

Starts with a “C” and ends with “N.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer reported that Mr. Eisenberg had been calling the cable network’s Washington bureau throughout the afternoon. Mr. Blitzer said that Mr. Eisenberg had been complaining about the mental health care system in the United States.

1mur.jpg
WMUR: Leeland Eisenberg surrenders

“Eisenberg was scheduled to appear in Strafford County Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. Friday with his wife for a domestic violence hearing.”

Still some confusion over the suspect’s name. More at Classical Values and at Hot Air.

Update 6:23pm Eastern. Last hostage–a male campaign worker–is released. Eisenberg surrenders. WMUR has video.

Update 5:40pm Eastern. Another hostage reportedly released. Foster’s Daily Democrat, a local newspaper, identifies the suspect as Leeland Eisenberg of Somersworth. WMUR adds that Eisenberg had sought “roadside flares” before the incident.

Eisenberg shows up in Rochester police logs for DWI and stalking incidents:

11:13 p.m. – Near Cumberland Farms on Milton Road, Leeland Eisenberg, 46, of 182 Milton Road, 16, is charged with DWI.

Monday, June 11, 2007 With the help of a resident who called to report a suspected drunken driver on Washington Street, police charged Leeland Eisenberg, 46, of 182 Milton Road, Apartment 16, Rochester with driving while intoxicated.

7:51 p.m. –Leeland Eisenberg, 46, of Milton Road, 16, is charged with two counts of stalking.

Foster’s Daily Democrat has learned the suspect who took hostages at the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign headquarters is Leeland Eisenberg of Somersworth, who is well known to police in Rochester.

And here’s a letter published in the FDD on March 20:

Rochester police get slap in the face

To the editor:

The Rochester Police Department was trying to be proactive and help the citizen’s of Rochester from thieves and what they got was a slap in the face.

For every minute that Capt. Dumas has to spend dealing with the antics of Leeland Eisenberg it is one less minute he has to spend helping someone with something important. Mr. Eisenberg is wasting the time and the money of the taxpayers.

Police officers risk their life every day helping people, and to make them question if they should put a piece of paper in a car is just wrong.

Why can’t people focus on the important things?

Melissa Picard
Rochester

Update 5:19pm Eastern. I’m told NBC is identifying a different suspect than FNC ID’d. Allah’s got much more. Two hostages apparently still being held.

Update 5:07pm Eastern. The Manchester Union Leader reports that GOP candidates kept their offices open: “The Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani campaigns kept their offices in Manchester and Portsmouth open, according to their state campaign managers.”

Update 4:51pm Eastern. The Huffington Post attempts to contact Troy Stanley by phone. Wait a minute! Isn’t that “stalking”!
(hat tip – Matt)

FYI, with a hat tip to commenters, when you search “Troy Stanley,” these entries pop up in the Rochester police log:

11:38 a.m. — Troy Alan Stanley, 44, of 15 Strafford Inn, Farmington, is charged with criminal trespass and obstructing government administration.

6:14 p.m. — Troy Alan Stanley, 44, of Rochester Hill Road, is arrested on a bench warrant for disorderly conduct.

10:13 a.m. — Troy Alan Stanley, 44, of 287 Rochester Hill Road, 201, is charged with criminal trespass.

Troy A. Stanley, 44, of 201 Sofield Apartments, Rochester was charged with suspended registration and driving after revocation or suspension at 12:56 p.m. on July 27. He will appear Sept. 14 in Rochester District Court.

WMUR screenshot of second hostage released

Update 4:35pm Eastern. Rochester PD press conference starting shortly. (Update – It’s started, but PD is not giving out much info due to fluid situation of the investigation.) WMUR reports Stanley was in the middle of a divorce, had been drinking for 72 hours, was “not in the right state of mind.”

Update 3:54pm Eastern. ABC – Three total hostages released. Two adults and a baby. Suspect’s weapon described as a pipe bomb.

FNC identifying the suspect as Troy Stanley and describing him as a conspiracy theorizer. Mother reportedly negotiating to get him to surrender.

Question to MSM: If we–or you–start Googling “Troy Stanley,” does that qualify as “stalking,” too?

Update 3:26pm Eastern. WBZ reporting that there are two more hostages still in the office. WMUR and ABC reporting that the suspect is an older man with a history of mental illness who told his son to watch the news today.

Update 3:15pm Eastern. Hostages released? WMUR reporting that two hostages are safe…

Update 2:29pm Eastern. Unconfirmed reports: Hostage-taker is demanding to talk to Hillary.

Edwards’ office evacuated.

Update 2:15pm Eastern. FNC’s Major Garrett reporting that Hillary Clinton has canceled a speech event in Va. WMUR reports that it has confirmed through law enforcement that two campaign workers are being held.

Several elementary and middle schools are on lockdown.

WMUR reporting…

An armed man has taken people hostage at the Hillary Clinton campaign office in Rochester, police said.

It was not clear how many hostages there were or what weapons the man has. Police have set up a command post near the office on 28 North Main St.

Will monitor it.

Pray that it turns out alright and that no one is hurt.

WDHD is reporting Rochester has been evacuated after a bomb threat.

Take with a grain of salt, but here’s one eyewitness report from WMUR:

“A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, ‘You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,’” witness Lettie Tzizik said.

Map:

Obama’s Manchester office has been evacuated as a safety precaution.

“She who must not be named” can now use this as a test of her leadership abilities. Fox news has been blasting a ticker about her being touch with the hostages families and thank law enforcement for doing their job. If that is the level of her leadership we are in big trouble.

I am very happy this ended peacefully with no one hurt.

Hillary is irrelevant (until proven otherwise) to this entire story, and speculating about her motives only gives fuel to the other side.

This was one deranged man who went nuts, again until proven otherwise.

John Hinckley targeted Ted Kennedy, and failed, and then he went after Ronald Reagan.

This fellow just wanted a name for himself. Hillary was peripheral.

It is sad that there are those out there with mental problems. But, I still do not believe that socialized medicine is the answer.

He wanted to discuss health care, so he demanded to see the ‘queen’ of healthcare Hillary. I guess he has some ideas for her to add to her ‘healthcare list of to-dos’..

And, no there is nothing wrong with her contacting the family and the police for handling the event apppropriately. But, to make a ‘media’ event about this will undoubtedly be milked as far as a Clinton can milk it, for sure.

Now that I go back and look at it my comment #160 did not come out very well. My apologizes it does sound like I have a case of Clinton Derangement Syndrome (CDS). She has always come across so forced, fake, and plastic in her photo opportunities with those that fawn over her I could not get that picture out of my mind when formulating my comment. Once again my apologizes to Michelle and all her readers for sounding like a total jackass.

Some thoughts now that its over:

    1. Had he used a gun, there would have been more gun control legislation hitting the House floor on Monday morning. But since bombs are already banned by law…

    2. This comes out on the same day as the poll showing Republicans self-report better mental health than Democrats. Which leads me to…

    3. This guy is likely a registered Democrat as the issue he put his life on the line for is mental health care entitlement. When this fact comes out, it will lead to all sorts of conspiracy theories concerning the Clintons. Rush said as during the crisis that nothing happens on accident with the Clintons. I disagree in this case, but it is up to us to dig out if he is a left-wing kook.

Or perhaps he’d like to change laws? I know in WI the gist of the law basically you (as a family member or friend) cannot have someone committed for mental treatment unless they consent to going.

Which causes all sorts of problems.

I echo highrise in #174. Punish this guy to the fullest extent of the law – even if that means a lifetime in a mental health facility. I loathe Clinton as a politician, but no politician should have their staffers held hostage by a nutter. Period.

She didn’t do anything and she gets credit for it!!!! ARGH

More from the same AP release from #180.

It was a vintage example of a candidate taking a negative and turning it into a positive. And coming just six weeks before the presidential voting begins, the timing could hardly have been more beneficial to someone hoping to stave off a loss in the Iowa caucuses and secure a win in the New Hampshire primary.

Please. We all KNOW she’s going to use this to her advantage.

It was a thawing moment for a stoic figure who once snapped that she opted for professional life instead of staying home to bake cookies.

I managed to have a professional life AND bake cookies. I guess Ms. Hillary isn’t a multi-tasking kind of candidate.

She buttressed it with one final message. Clinton sought to use the sad moment as a national teaching opportunity, another skill often employed by presidents.

    Teach what exactly?

Another skill often employed by presidents…

and business leaders, and mothers and fathers, and teachers, and clergy, and ________________(fill in the blank)

And the enablers at the AP and the MSM are going to make sure of this “presidential moment.”
