Corruptocrat Alcee Hastings resigns from Intel Committee

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 4, 2007 08:19 PM

Well, better late than never. CQ Politics reports that corruptocrat Dem. Alcee Hastings abruptly quit the House Intelligence Committee today:

Democrat Alcee L. Hastings of Florida abruptly resigned Tuesday from the House Intelligence Committee, citing increased activities as chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission and his work on the Rules Committee.

“Now, I will devote even more time to my continued work for the people of my congressional district by ratcheting up my work as chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, as a senior member of the House Rules Committee and as co-chairman of Florida’s congressional delegation,” Hastings said in a statement.

But Hastings held open the possibility that he might return to the panel in the 111th Congress because he resigned before the current session of Congress ended. Intelligence members can only serve 10 years total, or five complete terms; Hastings has served on the panel since 1999.

His resignation took House Democratic leaders by surprise. Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer , D-Md., said he learned about it from reporters.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., immediately asked Hastings to at least stay on the panel through completion of the intelligence authorization (HR 2082) to be a strong voice in the conference committee. He agreed to do so and to work for passage of the final bill when it reaches the floor.

Hastings denied that his decision to resign was related to being passed over for the chairmanship of the Intelligence Committee in favor of Silvestre Reyes , D-Texas. Pelosi handpicked Reyes in January to lead the panel.

(You may recall Hastings’ snit fit last year when his bid to chair the intel panel was stymied by “misinformed fools” like yours truly who raised his House impeachment and Senate conviction on bribery and perjury charges.)

Why the sudden resignation? Fox News reports:

Hasting aides told FOX News that Hastings was not stepping down as a protest vote over the recently revised National Intelligence Estimate on Iran’s nuclear weapons, but possibly to preserve his ability to be reappointed to the committee, whose members are term-limited.

Hmmm.

Too much material to work with here. I could write all night about Hastings and intelligence.

Umm, you committed a sin by using corrupt and Democrat in the same sentence Michelle – LOL. Well, it was close enough.

    “misinformed fools” like yours truly

The only correct response to that is:

    THANK YOU!!!

As a native of the Fort Lauderdale area, it always amazes me that some people keep voting for old Alcee!

Thank God that low-rent lout is gone. I still can’t imagine why a crook like him was even considered for a seat on the Intelligence Committee (a misnomer when describing anything related to Pelosi’s congress).

Not to change the subject too much, but while we’re on the topic of security clearances here, why Sandy Burglar didn’t lose his permanently, I’ll never know.

I believe his name was William Borders, but I am not sure. I remember watching this case on TV for some reason it fascinated me, so I tried to follow what happened to the players.

You are correct about William Borders … he was the co-conspirator in the crimes that resulted in Hastings being impeached from his Federal Judge seat … and he was among the last day pardons by Bill Clinton.

Hastings was convicted on 21 counts of corruption, perjury, and accepting a $150,000 bribe in a racketeering case that came before him. That resulted in his impeachment by congress in 1989. The vote was 413-3 in the House and 69-26 in the Senate.

FYI … Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers and Charles Rangel were among those that voted for his impeachment. In the Senate Arlen Specter was one of the 26 that voted against impeachment.

The Senate had the option to forbid Hastings from ever seeking federal office again, but did not do so. That let him run for Congress in 1993 and get elected on Clinton’s coat-tails.

If that had been any of us that felony conviction would have ruined our lives, put us in prison, and in most states taken away our right to vote.

The people of Florida should hang their heads in shame for electing this criminal in the first place.
