Impeachment Watch: Santa Rosa City Council passes BDS resolution
Update: Mayor refuses to sign impeachment resolution.
***

The impeachment noose swings in Santa Rosa, Calif.
In a move that surprised current and former members, Santa Rosa’s normally staid and nonpartisan City Council asked Congress to launch impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
On a 5-1 vote cast at midnight Tuesday, the council endorsed a resolution presented by local impeachment advocates.
The vote by a seven-member council that had steadfastly resisted taking stands on national issues put Santa Rosa in the company of 88 other cities and counties, including Berkeley, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Arcata and Sebastopol.
Advocates, critics and political observers alike were surprised by the vote.
“You’re kidding,” said Sharon Wright, who served on the council from 1992-04, when told of the vote.
The vote also surprised liberal Councilwoman Susan Gorin, who had anticipated defeat.
“Although I felt myself leaning towards it, I was really surprised by the support from most of the rest of the council because the council has a history of not responding to situations that deal with federal or state issues,” she said.
Besides Gorin, council members Carol Dean, Veronica Jacobi, Lee Pierce and John Sawyer supported the resolution. Mayor Bob Blanchard cast the lone no vote while Councilwoman Jane Bender abstained.
Blanchard said he, too, was stunned by a council turnaround he didn’t see coming.
“I think they got suckered in,” he said, alluding to the impact of pleas from more than 40 speakers who waited until the issue came up at the end of a long council agenda.
Members of the Sonoma County Resolution to Impeach Coalition, which offered the measure, said actions by city councils and state legislatures are the only way to gain the attention of congressional leaders.
There’s no rest for the Bush-Cheney deranged crowd.
“This begins to raise the question as to whether we will take on all comers,” Blanchard said. “Is the next issue we’re going to take on the war?”
Don’t be surprised.

Who cares what some town council does? It doesn’t matter in the slightest. If they want to foolishly waste their time on this, godspeed to them. It doesn’t affect anyone.
Man,
I just wanted one “Wednesday Stupid”.
Keep them coming Michelle.
*wondering which playground to play in now
Guess who’s third in line to the President? Nancy Pelosi and I’ll throw in the fourth for good measure – Robert Byrd.
They’ll never get a conviction but these guys can’t control themselves. They want a Dem has President and they want it now.
There is no grounds for impeachment exclusive of the delusions of war crimes that are dancing around inside of their heads.
Except the taxpayers of Santa Rosa who are wasting their tax money on these people.
Looks like a “stuck on stupid” Wednesday.
While I am all for getting the federal government away from the centralized seat of abuse and power that it has become and putting power back into the states, there are little things that must be taken into consideration here.
Last time I checked, this still was a nation of laws and as such there were laws that people were supposed to follow? I think somewhere along the line, we were actually all supposed to follow and obey all the laws. Maybe that is just too complicated.
In a subsequent vote, the board unanimously passed the resolution that all members must wear their drool buckets while in session.
Midnight? I bet they voted themselves a raise too.
Faux News Report: BDS epidemic strikes normally staid Santa Rosa City Council. Shock and surprise exhibited by past and present council members.
Film at 11.
Sorry AJ – had to do it
Precisely! If the taxpayers want to waste their money on this nonsense, then, um, have fun with that, I guess. If not, they can vote those people out. I would probably take the latter. I am sure Santa Rosa has some local issues that need to be attended to.
30, good news for you regarding “Guess who’s third in line to the President? Nancy Pelosi and I’ll throw in the fourth for good measure – Robert Byrd.”
That line of succession is really, really Constitutionally iffy. The GOP could challenge that and could very well win (giving the presidency to Secretary Rice).
But then I guess some knuckleheads in Santa Rosa would want to impeach her too!
Stuck on stupid.
40 speakers are all the Santa Rosa’s City Council has to listen to. Hell, 40 people ought to go and call on the City Council to resign. The City Council have set precedence – Right?
Oh, wow! standup and take notice!!
The “level headed” city council of Santa Rosa is on board with impeachment. There must be something to it, if the “level headed” people are now lining up to get on the bandwagon.
Well, not exactly. How “level headed” can you be if you’re in California, and just a few miles up the road from San Francisco?
I think GWB should be impeached too, but sadly, for entirely different reasons than the lunatics running northern California, think he should be impeached for.
I thought California banned Santa.
55 miles from San Francisco, and this is surprising?
“And what does all this mean, Mr. Natural?” “It don’t mean s___.”
lol, john…. good one.
What a huge waste of the taxpayers’ time and money. Do you think they ever consider how stupid they look, when they do something so foolish? Obviously, they know it is a pointless gesture on their leftist part. File this one away under “stupid”. Geez!
Doesn’t surprise me, I used to live there. These people can’t even solve their traffic problem namely, the grid lock from San Fransisco on the 101 to Santa Rosa everyday.
John,
Santa is fine. Jesus is banned. Satan is not.
Hope that helps.
two dem reps did just say “present” for the Christmas vote last night…
California politicians can kiss my….
two from cal, among other dems…. crapweasels.
Bush and Cheney are toast now! Santa Rosa County wants them impeached. They may as well start packing.
The folks there must be proud of the way their tax dollars are being spent. It may not be that bad of an idea though…After Pelosi has sunk Congress to a record low in just a year, imagine what she’d do for women in the White House after a year?
The democratic politicians in California have done just about as much as the citizens will allow them. Taxes are as high as possible, spending is maxed on stupid pet projects, they’ve taken as many taxpayer funded vacations as they can get away with, they’ve done as much as possible for convicted child molesters, etc. So, now they are limited to making irrelevant political commentary.
Thanks Soap. Was getting worried. I like my Santa fat too.
The council then voted to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.
Some Perspective:
I had dinner last Saturday night with an 80 year old man who enlisted as a Navy Corpsman at age 17, was then sent to Paris Island, and ended up spending his young adulthood on Guadalcanal, Okinawa and five other islands I can’t remember right now.
He, and his sweetheart of 66 years, informed me that their Methodist church council had just voted for impeachment proceedings against President GW Bush. They also reported that nobody outside of this council could believe that such a vote had even occurred.
This 80 year old Navy Corpsman went on to tell me that there were some islands in the Pacific where more Americans were killed in one night than have been killed in the entire War on Terror so far.
If I was a councilman I might have voted yes so maybe the 40+ idiots would not show up at future meetings. I have a low tolerance for listening to that crap.
So if the people of Santa Rosa need a permit to build a shed in the backyard they go to the US Senate for that, right?
Condi Rice as President?? There was a time when I thought that would actually be a good thing… shortly thereafter I checked myself into a mental institution. I’m ok now.
Our CA tax dollars at work. You would THINK they could do something productive once in a while.
Pathetic, simply pathetic.
The arrogance of these insignificant gestures is amazing.
The medical definition of “Bush derangement syndrome”: anyone who thinks Bush is a bad President. Face it, that puts most Americans in the sick column. The Bush disapproval rating has been above 60% for so long it’s not news anymore.
I wish MM and the rest of you would stop daemonizing people you disagree with. If the town of Santa Rosa (home of the Vineman traithlon) thinks there is evidence that Bush promoted torture in violation of US law (which he is subject to), they may have a point. Try listening rather than simply shouting back.
Think First
Update………Blanchard won’t sign Bush resolution
Mayor says impeachment ‘not city business’; Pierce signs instead
By MIKE MCCOY
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
Mayor Bob Blanchard of Santa Rosa said he’s signed dozens of resolutions passed by the City Council, even some he opposed.
But Blanchard refused Tuesday to sign a resolution passed on a 5-1 vote last week that called on Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
“This is not city business,” said Blanchard, who believes the council should not consider resolutions that deal with state or federal matters.
The council vote stoked a firestorm over whether local elected officials should take stances on federal issues that reflect on the city’s entire population.
Several people addressed the council Tuesday, some applauding the impeachment vote and one saying the council had overstepped its bounds.
Councilman Lee Pierce, asked by Blanchard if he’d sign the resolution as the city’s vice mayor, agreed “on behalf of the other four council members, the 2,000 who signed the petition and to act as a conduit for the people.”
Some current and former council members said the impeachment resolution broke with a Santa Rosa City Council tradition of steering clear of state and federal issues.
But Pierce pointed out the council had taken such positions before, citing its unanimous vote in August to file a friend-of-the-court brief in favor of gay marriage on the issue before the state Supreme Court.
And in April, the council unanimously passed a resolution urging Congress to resolve its long-standing stalemate over immigration.
Pierce, along with council members Veronica Jacobi, Susan Gorin, John Sawyer and Carol Dean voted in support of the impeachment resolution. Blanchard voted no and Jane Bender abstained.
Faux News Report: With a vote of 230-0, the residents of Monkeys Eye Brow, Kentucky moved to impeach Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid on the grounds that “they ain’t from around here and ain’t got no sense.”
Roll up the streets at 7.
I know I should not feed the trolls, but this was so stupid that I felt the need to respond. If you think the people who post here think Bush is some sort of Messiah, you need to get your head checked. Ask anybody here and they’ll tell you something about Bush that pisses them off. His immigration policy is just one of the many examples.
However, the difference is that most of the people here do not see the need to hinder the POTUS from doing his job. On the current issue, this is a City Council. Don’t they have better things to do than waste time and money trying to impeach the POTUS?
There is a difference between being critical about the current administration and being deranged. You have just demonstrated that many liberals fail at differentiating between the two.
Monkey’s Eye Brow is within spittin’ distance of Fort Knox. Great little town, even if the people just sit on their porches and stare. We used to stop in all the time when I was training at Knox. I like their politics, too… Anyone else been there?
ArmoredCAV,
Monkey’s EyeBrow, Ky was always mentioned as the transmitter location for WPSD in Padukah. I was going to use Frog Jump, Tn, but I didn’t think anyone would know where that was.
This makes me sad. I once applied for and interviewed for their fire department, and really, really had wanted to live there. It had a great department that was big on training, the city is really very beautiful and the area really has no rival when it comes to how wonderful it is. Lots of live theatre and such…just can’t say enough about it and only moments away from where my family trailer is to go fishung, crabbing and clamming.
To hear that the City has wasted the tax payors time in doing something of this nature that far exceeds the boundaties of what they are there to do, that embarasses their city, that alienates a significant percentage of its population and that ultimately means as much as trying to fill the Grand Canyon by throwing a brick into it every year just plain depresses me and ultimately makes me glad I got hired on where I did prior to being offered the job from them.
Seriously, how embarrissing fo the people who live there to find out their City Fathers all have Napoleon Complexes
Tennessee: I’ve got to say that I have spent a bit of time on Knox, but I have never actually heard of Monkey’s Eye Brow. I thought you made it up, though it is an awesome name. Next time I’m in KY, I might just have to stop there!
Monkey’s Eyebrow is northwest of Paducah
I have never in my life seen such disrespect for the Office of the Presidency.
Common decency in this day and age is non-existent for the most part. And to tell you the truth, I’m sick of it.
I have always had respect no matter WHO is in office whether or not I agreed or disagreed with his policies or general behavior.
I don’t agree with everything Bush says or does, but I personally have respect for him. I guess that’s how I was brought up.
The name calling, the idiotic accusations, blaming Bush for just about everything including a toothache, etc. Get over it.
HAVE SOME RESPECT.
I mean, President Clinton was accused of murder by Jerry Falwell with absolutely no evidence to back that up. And he was accused of unjustly keeping a man in jail who was convicted of raping his cousin (who of course got paroled by Huckabee before being convicted of rape and murder).
Just sayin’. That stuff is way worse than some town politicians having meaningless impeachment votes.
President Bush has it easy.
Rusty,dont BDS me bro
I grew up in Santa Rosa. The only thing that surprises me is that they didn’t do this sooner.
And, just to connect the dots, Rep. Lynn Woolsey, one of those who voted NO on the Christmas resolution, represents Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.
docflash, that was pretty good!
Really? He’s been called everything in the book, including a murderer, liar, war criminal, and every word I can’t put in writing on this site…not to mention everything under the sun (literally) is blamed on him.
Get a life. This is MUCH WORSE than what Clinton went through.
Clinton had the entire MSM behind him. Remember, this is “all about sex”…
All we have is Bush haters, like yourself, all the time. We have people in the Senate who call him names, so-called respected journalists who can’t help themselves “slip” by calling him names, and then having to publicly apologize. And I can go on and on…
HAVE SOME RESPECT for the Presidency no matter WHO is in office. Lead by example. I guess that’s WAY too much to ask of liberals like you.
Rusty just likes to throw hand grenades!
Rusty/lgm – Santa Rosa, is not a town..it is a City. A rather large one.
They have a VERY big meth problem up there. That’s a problem they should consider spending their time on…not this nonsensical CARP.
#48 – you missed one…Hitler.
Great Post #48. The liberals played their hand too early. They’re running on the victim card this election. POOOOOR HILLARY AND POOOOOOR BILLY, the press just beats them up. I’ve got brown eyes but it’s not for the same reason liberals do.
Yes Feebs, I did miss that one, and probably hundreds more.
OH yes, poor Hillary, she’s getting piled on. And riding on the record of her husband’s experience.
Of course, I will now be accused of piling on myself, but facts are facts. But of course, it won’t be piling on when she starts “piling on” to Barack Obama. Hypocrite Hillary. It’s the do as I say, but not as I do mentality.
She ain’t seen nothin’ yet. And IF she gets the Dem nomination, just you wait. She’ll play the victim card over and over again. I can hear it now…vast right wing conspiracy, Swift boating (we can only hope), etc..etc.
BAL, take a chill pill. I don’t hate President Bush. I think he’s an incompetent and I don’t respect him, but I certainly don’t hate him. Nor do I want him impeached. I just want to get to January, 2009 already.
#44 Rusty said:
I mean, isn’t all of that stuff akin to: President Bush being accused by Dan Rather and CBS News of dereliction of duty with absolutely no evidence to back that up, or the NAACP accusing then Governor Bush of killing James Byrd “all over again” with absolutely no evidence to back that up?
Your comparisons might hold more water if Republicans had been meaninglessly trying to impeach Clinton for: bombing downtown Baghdad based on faulty intelligence, or bombing factories in Sudan on faulty intelligence, or bombing the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade on faulty evidence.
Just sayin’.
