Video: Meltdown on an alleged Air Canada flight
What’s going on here? A South Asian man screaming “Allahu Akbar” and “f***ing white people” freaks out on a plane. He yells at other passengers to “Shoot me! Shoot me!” He’s restrained by several large men. The vid is hot on Liveleak and YouTube, where it was posted yesterday. The person who posted it claims: “I don’t know what happened here. But this happened on my Air Canada plane ride to London, England in December 6th, 2007 from Toronto…My partner and I decided we should videotape this in the interest of sharing the experience we went through on this plane with those interested.”
Is the shrieking nutball just a lone nutball or something else? Recognize anyone? You’ll note that the people restraining the shrieker remain remarkably calm as he blows his gasket:

Just another Muslim Moment. He would feel comfortable on the Baltimore MTA.
It really is hard to tell. It really does look to me, in my professional medical opinion, that he was having an honest to God panic attack for what ever reason. I have seen patients have them, and being terrified of flying myself, I can understand. It might also explain why the gentlement that were restraing him were able to remain so calm. As I was listening, I was trying to hear what they were saying, and what little I could understand sounded a great deal like what we would use to calm down our panic attack patients.
A panic attack is a very real and very ugly event. You literally want to come out of your skin. You cannot actually be held responsible for what you say or do when you are in the throes of one and it really was best tat tey had him restrained and cuffed.
I am not making excuses for him, nor am I a doctor and am making a diagnosis. I am only offering an opinion based on what I saw and comparing it to what I would have been treating it as from the limited video I saw. There are things that happened before the video we didn’t see and i was not able to ask, nor vitals given. However, that is exactly what it looked like. He looked incredibly terrified and like he wanted the hell off that plane and out of his own skin. He made no threats, just to say “F you” which is common.
OMG another Islamophobia moment! Did you see those white, European looking probably Christian men beating the begeebers out of that poor apparently Muslim, darker skinned man who was freaking out, screaming Allahu Akbar, and was potentially dangerous to that entire flight!!!
Oh wait, that NEVER HAPPENED! They very gently restrained the man, comforted him and treated him as any of them would want to be treated. Good for them. That is how decent men behave. I’m glad on several levels that is on YouTube.
And he actually soounded more like he was from India that from an Arab country, didn’t he?

You very well could be right. I would have suggested either a panic attack as you suggested or possibly (but less likely statistically) a dissociative episode (psychotic break). I’ve seen both look like that. Either way, as RetFireman well pointed out, they did the right thing. They restrained him only as much as was needed from hurting himself or others and given the cramped, potentially dangerous environment, put him in riot cuffs. I’ve seen trained, college degreed psych techs not handle similar situations nearly as well in a much more controlled, safe environment.
I think they need to work on those handcuffs. They didn’t seem to work or were not put on properly. What a fun transatlantic flight that must have been…
Looks like a psychotic episode to me, could be drugs or any number of things. I’ve seen guys on angel dust act exactly like that.

It looks like the guy had a total meltdown but when I watched it again, I noticed something. The two big guys on either side of him call him by name. Is it possible that he was being escorted to the United States? On the other hand, his accent sounds more Indian than Middle Eastern.
Scratch that. It would be hard to escort him to the United States if the flight was going to London.
Should have thrown him out the door. More I watch, the more I see the underlying hatred this idiot hosts.

In 1947, British India was divided between Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan.
Not all Muslims left India.
In 1971, the eastern provinces of East Pakistan declared their independence became Bangladesh.
Presently in South Asia, there are Muslims in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
I took this same flight in early Sept., 2001, and our return flight on 9/14 was just a little nerve-wracking. We were stuck in Toronto for 3 days waiting for foreign airlines (Air Canada) to be allowed to fly into U.S.
Maybe the men on each side might be air marshalls or other law enforcement professionals?? Very cool and professional behavior.
There’s no “alleged” about it — this would definitely appear to be an Air Canada flight. Check out the last few seconds of the video and compare the image on the seatback monitor to that of Air Canada’s enRoute entertainment system.

I don’t know if that was a panic attack. He’s talking about people shooting and hitting him. That doesn’t sound like a panic attack. He’s also saying that they’re cheating?
I don’t know what to make of it, but he could have been trying to make a scene.
Seemed like little real attention from the attendants. Something is not quite right with this on its face.
Michelle, did you recognize anyone? I did not. But I wouldn’t mind flying with those gentlemen restraining him. Very calm, focused, under-control. Air Canada should offer them free tickets for life. Well done restraining that man.
If you are going to use zip-ties for handcuffs, you better yank them as tight as you can. This guy is out of his at least twice that I see.
And how can a plane fly without a roll of duct tape? So many uses including taping this nuts foul mouth shut!
He looked like he was an Indian Muslim. I’m not an expert, but I worked with many Indian co-workers for 7 years and as soon as the video opened, I thought he was from India.
And while you can’t generalise about all Indian Muslims, etc, etc…..it’s good to see that apparently they want us dead too.
I’m not so sure the men “restraining” him weren’t part of his act.
My first impression is that if they weren’t friends of his, they were part of the show.
I got the impression the poor guy is freaking out. The guys next to him seem to know his name and same to all be professional and trying to calm him down.
The other passengers seem to be trying to ignore him like that damn crying baby on my last transatlantic flight.

The cheating part was a mystery. The cuffs didn’t work so well. All in all a very pleasant flight. Many seem to be just trying to ignore his psycho babble and showed the restraint of the Western World in that no one was beheaded.

Obviously the guy was being escorted by the two men on either side of him. He didn’t just happen to sit between two men who were trained psychologists with plastic cuffs in their briefcase. Was he cuffed when he boarded? Why didn’t the person who videoed this incident say anything else about the circumstances? Did they only notice after he began his rant? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I would have noticed something before this incident.
I’m just waiting for the outraged CAIR response, regardless if he was Muslim, or Indian, or whatever in 3.2.1….
Is it odd or wrong to wonder if this was some kind of media set up like NASCAR had few months back? That it got caught on Youtube spoiled the shrieking headlines of “innocent indian muslim beaten severely by white radicals” ? After the Nascar Plants I would not put it past the media to try this sort of thing. They’re already howling about all the dangerous things they can get through security.
I must say, the way those two guys handled him you wonder if they weren’t law enforcement of some type, maybe air marshals or off duty policemen or something. It maybe that those two moved in before the guy was able to start taping. It would explain why the rest of the passengers seem calm. Thankfully someone was there to tape it, that guy won’t be able to sue and claim “flying while muslim”

Apparently the religion of peace does’t give people much peace of mind, this guy seems to be a typical outraged terrorist to be and I bet anything he would love to have a terrorist act happen right on that plane or anywhere else if given the chance.
About 3/4 of the way through the video, a person walks in from the right. He’s wearing a baseball cap and has a beard and looks suprizingly like Michael Moore. MM, is that who we’re supposed to recognize? Because it sure looks like him.
If not, this may just be the new jihadi way of talking control of the plane; have one typical screaming lunatic from the Religion of Perpetual Outrage (who would be suprized by that?) while the others storm the cockpit.

What I noticed was the man at the end who appeared to take a pillow and put it over somebody’s head. As a father, my first thought was that he was trying to shield his child from the f-bombs and his very frightening behavior.

Cell phone and digital cameras must have been abundantly available on that flight. Only ONE person thought to record it? I am struck by the calm and dis-interest (especially upon hearing alahu akbar) throughout the passenger cabin.
Panic attack or not – unlike a loud, cranky infant, this passenger was a potential threat to the passengers and an unnecessary fright to small children. I would have dug out a sock and stuffed it in his trap.
Air Canada better have offered some serious compensation/reward to the men that held Mr. Alahuakbar in his seat with such a reasoning manner.
I cannot begin to fathom the level of exhaustion these men must have experienced with such a long flight under those circumstances.
My first instinct would be to jam a pencil through his ear just to make him shut the frig up.

His name seems to be “Jay.” I think he is a prisoner of these men. The airline isn’t concerned, and they’re making decisions about whether or not he gets water (”if you don’t calm down, then you don’t get water”). The way he says “hell” and “mate” suggests that he’s from the UK or Australia. It’s possible that he’s being extradited. One of the men restraining him says “You’re going home to your mother.”
His panic seems real… it doesn’t seem like an act. There are a couple possibilities: paranoid schizophrenic, afraid of flying, afraid of confined spaces, or perhaps he thinks there is a chance they’re going to give him the Maher Arar treatment by sending him off for torture or execution. The last one seems most likely, because he keeps saying they’re going to shoot him.
Also of note is that the prisoner mentions several times that his captors are “cheating.” Perhaps the circumstances of his extradition were a bit shady, which might explain why he thinks they’re going to kill him.
I don’t hear a Canadian accent among his captors, so they could be Americans. CIA, perhaps. But the audio is bad, so they could be Canadian.
On a less serious note: “I’m going to be die today” is the best line since “Don’t tase me, bro!”

What’s up with the small dark haired women sitting forward in her seat (appears to be on the right side of the aircraft)? Worried, but not panicked? Don’t know about the rest of you but I’d rather suffer a root canal than fly anymore. Unfortunately, it’s not an option due to time/distance in most cases. If this guy was in some kind of custody or “escort” situation, how dare they not place him where he could not be a disruption/danger to the rest of the passengers.

I don’t believe this guy was a jihadist.. I’m not sure what his deal was. BUT I have to say, Hannity & Colmes totally missed the “Allahu Akbar” part of the video in the segment I just watched. Kimberly Guilfoyle quietly mentioned it but overtalk drowned it out.
Colmes whined about how we wouldn’t even know about this or be talking about it if he hadn’t been from “southeast Asia”… totally ignoring that he was screaming what all terrorists do when they are attacking. Again, I don’t think there’s any evidence he was a terrorist, probably just a nut… but ignoring what he was shouting is disgusting, but not surprising.
