Dan Fogelberg, R.I.P.
Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg died of prostate cancer today. He was 56. There’s a message from his family on his website. R.I.P.:

This is sad news, indeed. Dan Fogelberg’s music had a beauty all its own. And with this being the holiday season, we could already be sure of hearing my personal favorite–Same Old Lang Syne.
A great songwriter and singer. It’s sad he passed away so young. RIP, Dan.

Very sad. He touched my life through his music in many ways.
I, too, didn’t know he was sick. He will be missed in the music world. RIP.
I knew he was sick but hadn’t heard about it for a long time and had hoped that he was a survivor.
His music touched most of my growing up years. In addition to listening to albums, we sang his songs in choir and played them in band and orchestra.
I’ve been listening to his Christmas album the last couple of days, it’s my favorite. I always loved that he wrote and performed music that musicians love, not just something that would be popular.
RIP Dan.
May God Rest his Soul and comfort his family.
Unlike many, he was a singer/songwriter of great talent.

They just do not create music with lyrics and tones of Fogelberg’s caliber.
He was a genius with his craft.
“Longer Than” is a haunting tune and “Same Old Lang Syne” is a true classic.
He will be missed but his music will live on forever.

I’d always check into his website after his 2004 announcement but there was never an update which seemed ominous. I love Longer and Leader of the Band, about his father, the best. Godspeed.
I am sorry to hear of his passing. Listening to his music was a great way to unwind after a hectic day. I guess God decided his work on earth was complete. Our prayers that he is welcomed in heaven as a member of the celestial choir.

The quality of his music and depth of his talent shaped my expectations of musical artists from a very early age. Looking back, there’s been no close second.

Other people have written great love songs, but when future generations of songwriters look for guidance, they will turn to Dan Fogelberg’s “Longer” for inspiration.

I use to listen to the guy play in the bars of Champaign Illinois. Great voice and musician.
But as my papa use to say, we are only here for a visit. So congratulations to him for returning back home.

Men over 40…get checked EVERY YEAR.
I was shocked when I heard this on Bill Bennett’s show this morning. I used to listen to him growing up in the 80’s. When I finally got married and went through the playlist with the DJ, I made sure to have “Longer” played for the many cousins of mine who had danced to it as their first songs at their own weddings in the 70’s and early 80’s. It was really touching seeing all them out there dancing to their song.
May he continue to entertain the heralds of heaven. RIP Dan, you were truly a great one whose music will live on.
Very sad news, I love his music. In fact I have just been listening to his “Best of” CD in my car. He sings my favorite version of “What Child is This?”. One of those artists who would have been much more famous than he was if talent were more important than image.

Dan lived here in my hometown, Encinitas, CA. He was really a nice person and was very approachable. I would always see him around town during the fall and winter months.
A very sad reminder for all us bucks over 45 to get checked annually and monitor your numbers.

…as a cancer survivor and someone who saw Dan in concert twice, I am totally shocked and saddened by his passing.

Michelle, thank you very much for the tribute. Of the 3 times I saw him at Red Rocks, I distinctly recall saying (a year after I moved here), “Now I feel like I belong in Colorado [having seen Dan at RR].” I’ve now been here 18+ years.
There’s so much more to his music than what’s written up in the obits. What stuns me now is doing the math and realizing that some of what was to me his best (yet less commercially known) work was well before he was 30!

We who knew he was sick knew this was coming. (Thank God there is a rich catalog of material remaining.) Still, as much as a loss as it is to his fans, it needs to be kept in perspective with the unexpected and senseless Christian martyr deaths that occurred only a week prior in my state. I get the sense Dan would humbly agree.
I was a college student in the early 1990’s, and I was into the alternative (grunge) rock and the heavy metal scene.
I remember when I heard a Fogelberg song while on hold with some customer service rep, and I thought “This is just awf…uh…hmmm…I, uh, actually kindasorta like this! Oh no! I still like girls, right???”
The song was “Leader of the Band”, and it was the part where he said “Papa, I don’t think I said ‘I love you’ near enough” that got me misty eyed. I’m close to my father, so that line resonated with me. I was a Fogelberg fan from that point forward.
Ahhh yes.
Fogelberg at Red Rocks. Glad I was there ’cause you can not even describe to someone the serenity….it had to be witnessed live.

I hated “Sometimes when we touch”. Thought it was maudlin and contrived. But, I loved “Another Auld Lang Syne”, his best song, by far.
I think you’ve got your wires crossed a little bit. “Sometimes When We Touch” was made popular by Dan Hill, not Dan Fogelberg.
Now you’re free to be a Dan Fogelberg fan without any reservations.
Had several of his songs when he was with Bread. I love his voice.
I’m from Louisville and every year at Derby they play the song he did, “Run for the Roses.” It never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I can’t even sing it without getting all choked up.
In high school a friend of mine gave me a copy of a “poem” which became one of my favorites. It was “The Innocent Age.” Only in the last few years did I find out it was a song of Dan’s.
He was a great talent and will be missed.
It is the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance, Dan.
