Blue-on-blue catfight: Kos turns on Harry Reid; Update: Dodd stymies Reid on FISA bill, nutroots cheer

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 17, 2007 03:32 PM

Update 9:30pm Eastern. This isn’t getting much attention outside of the lefty blogs, but tonight Harry Reid withdrew the FISA overhaul bill after Kos champion Chris Dodd threatened to filibuster it over telecom immunity provisions. The bill has bipartisan support. It is now tabled until next month.

More details:

Facing divisions among Senate Democrats, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has postponed debate on reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act until January.

Although Reid won a cloture vote earlier in the day allowing the FISA debate to begin, he still faced heavy pressure from his own Caucus on amendments that could be offered to the base bill, which was a version of the legislation approved by the Intelligence Committee. Facing these concerns, Reid decided to delay final action on the legislation until the Senate returns for the second session of the 110th Congress, which means no work on the FISA bill until at least mid-January.

“I’ve spoken to a number of senators [involved in the FISA debate], and everyone feels it would be to the best interests of the Senate that we take a look at this when we can come back at the first of the year and resume this,” Reid said on the floor Thursday night.

Update: More lefty piling on. Dirty Harry manages to unite the left and right against him.

***
Mwrrrrooowr. Nutroots King Kos has turned on Harry Reid–yes, the same Harry Reid who brought down the house at the Kos convention last year.

See the blue-on-blue break up here and here. Spits Kos:

In short, “holds” bottle up legislation if Republicans place them. Not so much if Democrats do.

And here I thought Reid was the Democratic majority leader. I’m done with him.

Dodd for majority leader!

Right now Dodd has his head up his butt in that he is suggesting that the whole internet is being stored away by the NSA.

Would anyone care to calculate just how many times the entire world production of hard drives that would be required to store even one hour worth of that traffic?

You have to understand even Dodd is saying it was selective in what they pulled out.

Also due to the optical nature of the transmissions this is a capability that was already required under the CALEA legislation.

Dodd is now arguing about checks and balances aspects.

What is totally missed like the forest for the trees is that the FISA legislation as a whole is a total intrusion on the intelligence gathering authorized by the constitution to the Commander in Chief.

Let us speculate how much congress would love being required to have a staff member of the cabinet sit in on all their hearings and have to approve all their actions, yet they seem to have no issue with congress inserting the judicial branch into the intelligence gathering by the executive branch.

I doubt they would like Supreme Court staff sitting in on their actions either.

Congress has oversight, the FISA law as a whole is to me an unconstitutional intrusion into the prerogatives of the Commander in Chief.

He is constantly saying that he takes a poll of the membership and that is how the decision in made, yet I , nor anyone I know, have ever received said questionaire.

Everytime I hear Dodd speak, or hear of something he has said or done, I am constantly reminded of the choice that the largest representative of North American Firefighters has made to lead the Free World. Just so you understand…

The FISA overhaul bill doesn’t provide amnesty for the telecoms. It provides immunity from civil suits arising from the telecoms role in cooperating with the government in the protection of our nation.

It would be a beautiful thing if the trial lawyers were to bring their resources to bear on illegals, but don’t hold your breath waiting. The illegals’ pocket aren’t that deep.

    Cooperation which was
illegal. Amnesty, immunity — whatever you want to call it. The bottom line is that they’re being given protection from repercussions related to their illegal activities. It’s a rewarding of lawlessness.

It would be a beautiful thing if the trial lawyers were to bring their resources to bear on illegals, but don’t hold your breath waiting. The illegals’ pocket aren’t that deep.

They could sue Mexico, for encouraging illegal migration. And if Congress sought immunity for the Mexican government for their illegal migration promotion activities, the Right would be (rightly so) crying foul.

    Thanks.

My actual point was that we shouldn’t be afraid to go into the belly of the beast and occasionally respond over there. Always politely!

The regular nuts over there won’t be swayed, but polite reason might find root in the mind of some of the more moderate readers.

For instance, I’d be willing to bet not one person over there has brought up that it’s civil immunity, not criminal. It would prevent the trial lawyers from suing them and syphoning off millions of dollars, mostly for the trial lawyers.
