Yet another jerk of the year nominee

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 17, 2007 09:57 AM

jerk

Honestly, I thought Bobby “Big Man in the Green Zone” Calvan had the Jerk of the Year award all wrapped up. But there’s a late entry in the contest. She’s a Philadelphia anchorwoman charged with punching a NYC cop over the weekend. Via Philly Gossip:

And the big story on Eyewitness News is that CBS 3 anchor Alycia Lane is currently locked up in a New York jail cell after being arrested early this morning for allegedly punching a female police officer in the face.

Daily News reporter Regina Medina is reporting exclusively that Lane, 35, was arrested at 2:04 a.m. today at the corner of W. 17th Street and 9th Avenue and later charged with one count of assault witih intent to cause physical injury to an officer, said NYPD spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves. The 10th Precinct officer suffered lacerations to her face, Nieves said. Lane was also accompanied by an unidentified male, according to the NYPD report.

The NYPost has a follow-up this morning:

A foxy Philly anchorwoman - who once e-mailed sexy swimsuit snaps to a married TV talking head - became an anger woman today, calling a female cop a “dyke bitch” and slugging her in the face, law-enforcement sources said. The bizarro incident occurred when Alycia Lane, an Emmy Award-winning anchor for KYW-TV in Philadelphia, was riding in a cab with hunky radio DJ boyfriend Chris Booker and another couple when their taxi was stalled behind a slow-moving, unmarked police car, sources said…

…The petite, twice-divorced Lane, 35, then also got out of the cab and began snapping photos, getting right up into the face of the male cop doing most of the grilling, the sources said.

One of the three cops, a woman, told the TV anchor to back away, saying, “You can take pictures, but you have to step back,” the sources said.

That’s when Lane went nuts, shouting, “I don’t care that you’re a cop - dyke bitch!” the sources said.

Then she walloped the officer in the face, the sources said.

Lane - whose lawyer claimed she didn’t know the three were cops - was busted and taken to the 10th Precinct station house, where she was charged with assault.

Crying so hard that her makeup ran down her face, Lane was later taken to central booking for her arraignment last night.

The usually impeccably primped Lane, whose red-rimmed eyes were a sharp contrast to her sleek, black jacket and pants, was released on her own recognizance.

Then she shared a 30-second hug with a male pal.

Lane’s Madison Avenue lawyer, David Smith, said his client “absolutely never hit or made any derogatory comments to anyone.”

    Just my two cents:

9th Ave is a south-flowing artery on the west side of Manhattan, jam packed with party people in cars, in cabs and on the sidewalks at 2:00am on a Sat. night/Sunday morning. An incident like this would have attracted scores of eyewitnesses. I mention this to illustrate that this would NOT be an ideal location for the NYPD to bear false witness, as Ms. Lane’s defense alleges.

If indeed there was a video camera in the unmarked car, I doubt it would have captured the incident, as Ms. Lane’s cab is reported to have been behind the NYPD’s car. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a security camera mounted somewhere near this intersection, but just from experience, I imagine that a multitude of pedestrians were witness to this incident.

Uninvolved witnesses + an undercover NYPD officer with a lacerated face = trouble for Ms. Lane’s case.

In addition, well armed, undercover NYPD utilize multiple forms of transportation (unmarked cars, disguised taxi cabs, disguised utility and delivery trucks, etc.) Their primary focus at 2:00am is vice (drug crime/prostitution) and special victims (rape.) It is NOT advisable to get out of your cab and start picking fights at 2:00am in NYC.

It appears that Ms. Lane’s career might have skipped the more experienced ‘beat reporter’ route and went straight to ‘pretty face/talking head.’

First of all, one should NEVER strike someone who is carrying a gun and has the authority to use it when they feel threatened. That just isn’t a smart thing to do. She just might find herself standing before God trying to explain to Him why she felt she had the right to do that.

Second, when a policeman tells one to do leave an area, do it. They have the authority to do so, and probably have a good reason to. Often it’s for one’s own safety. Or because one is contaminating a crime scene.

Third, always try to remember one’s lies, so one can back them up. She said she didn’t care that that woman was a cop, then tried to say she didn’t know that woman was a cop.

Most of the judges in state criminal in court New York were unknown lawyers in practice and owe their judgeships less to skill in the courtroom than to skill in the clubhouse. Judges in New York get their jobs by slavish obedience to the Democratic Party. Let’s just remember the Puffy (P Diddy) trial from a few years ago. The judge treated the defendant (Puffy) and his high powered lawyers like celebrities. The judge treated the prosecutors like they were crap. And an acquittal on all counts was inevitable.
