Christmas doll, moonbat-style
A San Francisco Chronicle editor fantasizes about making his daughter a radical Communist “Un-American Girl Doll” to give her a far Left alternative to the American Girl Doll collection:
I know, American Girl makes a doll from San Francisco. As you’d guess she’s from the 1970s — that apparently is our place in history — and has long hair, bell bottoms and a peasant blouse. But let’s hazard a wild guess that the generic, unadventurous doll named Julie Albright didn’t spend much time turning on and tuning out in the Haight.
On the other hand, the historic San Francisco doll I’m planning to create was a lifelong radical. She grew up in North Beach, and came of age during the labor tumult of the mid-21st century. She was a union leader and a member of the Communist Party who was then called before the House Un-American Activities Commission in San Francisco in 1957. In case you hadn’t guessed, she is based on someone I know: My great aunt Angela Ward.
She will be called the Un-American Girl…
…I do realize the Un-American Girl will be a little different experience for her than Nellie O’Malley. There’s the political aspect – not too common in a doll — but also, one of my daughter’s favorite activities is getting her dolls ready for bed. So I will have to break it to her that the Un-American Girl has one true passion: To stay up late and argue about world affairs.
“Forget putting her in pajamas,” I’ll have to tell her. “Prop your new doll up on your bed. Give her a newspaper, a little chianti and a companion to argue the big issues of the day. Maybe not Malibu Barbie. But yes, your American Girl, Nellie O’Malley, would be fine. Even Velvet the Bear might want to chime in about animal rights. Your room will be livelier than ever. And as your friends are all gathered around your pillow, you can yell out stuff like, ‘Dolls of the world unite!’ and ‘Don’t fall off the bed, comrades!”
I can’t wait to see what he cooks up as an alternative to G.I. Joe.

No satirist would be able to dream up with such an absurdity: it had to come from real life. Or what approximates it these days. As Lenin might have put(in) it: “When comes the Revolution, the Capitalists will sell us the dolls for our daughter’s Christmas presents.” One more indication, along with the Time Magazine cover of Vlad the Impaler, that the beast of Communism has been exhumed and it knows where you live.
Fortunately, it’s 21st century America and all our candidates, in intellect and character, are up to the task of defeating it once more . . .
This really surprised me.
The American Girl collection was created by an alumna of Wells College, which is a women’s college in Aurora, NY. The campus culture is self-consciously liberal and feminist, though not obnoxiously so. I see some of this heritage in the American Girl stories that I read my daughter.
Wow. With that background, I never would have believed that American Girl is insufficiently leftist for the average moonbat dad.
As for myself, I’m happy that my daughter enjoys the stories. I just try to slip in a little perspective for balance every now and then. For example, I tell her that the overwhelming majority of “Rosie the riveters” wanted to go back to their homes, and were not in fact forced out by “the Man.”

I know the article never mentions Christmas, but you must conclude that if he’s buying something for his daughter in December it is Christmas related.
That leads to this: If he’s so gung-ho on lifting up this person as a role model for his daughter, then wouldn’t that go against communism and atheism. The last time I heard, those two ideologies were connected at the hip.

I realize that I was educated in the public schools and graduated in Louisiana. I also have a college degree from a Louisiana university so I may be wrong here, but didn’t 1957 fall in the 20th century? Maybe he was educated at one of those schools for “cultural diversity” and “social justice” that are so popular in California and other predominatly liberal parts of the country. You know, the sort of places that teach kids the periodic table by having them pick an element and then write a ransom note to the President telling him all the bad things that will happen if he doesn’t pay up. I suspect teaching kids what century it is isn’t nearly as important at those places as having them write songs protesting hiring more police to try and lower the crime rate.

But seriously, I just don’t understand how the Left came to completely dominate the media and university faculties. In a country fairly evenly divided between left and right, how did so many leftists congregate in those two institutions? You would think the “law of averages” would prevent a wholesale takeover. It seems to me to be a concerted effort by those already in authority to keep the right out. Which, of course, would fit right in with the liberal view of “tolerance.”

In the 20th Century alone, communism and its brethren ideologies (socialism, Nazism, etc.) killed 170 million people. That’s 1.7 million annually; 141,666 persons per month; 4,657 people per day; 194 people per hour; 3.3 people per minute for one hundred years.

America communists and communist sympathizers throughout the world believe everything – especially morals – is relative and anything goes.
Under communism, religion (which the left in America despises) is frowned upon (in fact, many of the 170 million killed were murdered *just* for being religious) so it gets rid of the problem that supposedly is in the way of their “freedom”.

The Chronicle (The Comical) is a joke. Most of the rag consists of garbage like this and local nature, global warming, Richmond shooting articles. It really tries hard to confine itself, I think, to covering only the region. And, the majority of the region thinks this crap is cool.

That’s why you hear the NY Times and MSNBC insist that their reporting is already balanced and unbiased even though everyone knows they lean far left. As long as they can claim to be centrist, they feel no pressure to make their reporting more balanced.

He’s overlooking at least a couple other things from back then:
– There was a major airline strike, and quite a few flight attendants (they were called “stewardesses”) survived by being topless dancers;
– Silicone breast implants went mainstream, pioneered by Carol Doda;
So, his great aunt may have been “Un-American”; and the doll manufacturer certainly can’t be all-inclusive, but again, there were other things going on back then. His idea of a ’70s doll is only his own.

The reason libs control colleges and universities can be summed up in one word: tenure. Liberals control who gets tenure at almost every post secondary education organization. The result is: Conservatives need not apply.
Somewhere along about 1967 or 68, the line between liberals and radicals
began to blur. After that they sort of began mixing and this new breed of
liberal was born. Before that, liberal wasn’t quite as bad as it is now. Also,
it’s the liberal/radicals that wound up teaching in colleges and indoctrinating
the people teaching in them now. It also seems that the liberal kick it up
another notch every generation.
It’s really scary to think what they could be like in ten to twenty years.

I’m inclined to agree, and would also posit that both ideologies have shifted to the left, with liberalism becoming socialism bordering on communism, and conservatism taking over the spot vacated by liberalism. Conservatives now really are the voice of freedom of speech and religion (as long as you’re not blowing people up), exhibit greater degrees of tolerance, and have even taken on a more internationalist flavor when looking at foreign policy. The left now argues for Americans to be brought home, while the right supports expansion of liberty abroad through the use of American power. While these are all fairly general statements, I do think, with sufficient time, abundant specific examples can be found to support them.

I’m not a troll, either left wing or right. But I might point out that there is at least one communist country that is more than a little successful.
At least China is technically communist, but they only achieved their success by basically repudiating communism and embracing capitalism. In actual fact, they are authoritarianism capitalistic.
So your point is well-taken. In order to succeed communist countries have to be capitalistic even if they still call themselves communist.

This is my fault. I didn’t make clear what my definition of “success” was.
Instead of going into a long-winded, point by point list of criteria I will measure success using just one metric.
If you walk up to the average person and offer him and his family one-way tickets and American citizenship, on the condition they can never return to their native country, how many would turn you down?
If communism is the font of justice and contentment its proponents claim then the answer should be “damn near every one of them.” Something tells me that’s not the case.
China is communist in name only. Otherwise that would imply that communism actually works, as its economy is booming.
