Eco-scrooges can’t give it a rest

Environmental busybodies never take a vacation. The lead letter on Christmas day at the San Francisco Chronicle echoed dim bulb Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels’ recent “Stop global warming and buy CFLs or Santa will DIEDIEDIE!” threat:

Change our lifestyle to save Santa’s home

Editor – Santa is deeply concerned with the rapid shrinking of the North Pole. For generations, he has depended on swift, reliable and environmentally friendly reindeer power.

If we do not change our lifestyle soon and seek alternative energy sources, future generations will not experience the thrill of seeing Santa flying over the rooftops on Christmas Eve, and the only happy soul will be the Grinch, who wants to see a Christmas meltdown.

GEORGE EVANS
Novato

And in Aspen, Colorado, it looks like the green mayor there wants to kill a community hearth out of eco-guilt:

In the mountain resort of Aspen, where mansions each pump out more than 600 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, and jets delivering the rich and famous to their second homes add another 300,000 tons, the mayor is trying to eliminate a natural-gas fueled flame in an open municipal hearth in downtown that is intended to provide ambience.

“This isn’t Arlington National Cemetery. It’s not the eternal flame,” Mayor Mick Ireland told the Denver Post. “It’s a symbol like if the mayor were to run around in a Range Rover.”

…A week ago he called for a vote to kill the light, but it failed, 3-2, meaning city workers will return to their brainstorming to find some way to make the hearth “environmentally acceptable.”

Gulfstream eco-hypocrisy exposed…yet again:

Council member Jack Johnson told the paper the hearth should be an educational display, with a sign explanation how it is wasting fuel and why.

As the flame burns, Escalades and Hummers drive by, paparazzi trip over hearth chairs seeking photographs of supermodel Heidi Klum and sales associate Kate Kelly, in a nearby retailer, told the newspaper, “Al Gore wouldn’t be too happy about this.”

But participants in a newspaper forum ridiculed the situation.

“Maybe just put the fire out and hang a picture of a fire instead. You put up a kiosk with informational booklets (printed on recycled paper) that explain the Global Warming Crisis, why the fire had to be put out, and ask for donations to purchase Carbon Credits. Ask the rich to stop coming to Aspen, because it’s actually bad for the environment, to have all those jets flying around. Shut down the ski area. Because, really; can we afford to waste time skiing, when the oceans are about to rise 20 ft.? I think not.” wrote Rulo Melko. “Well, maybe not. We’ll let the rich still fly their jets in and ski, and spend money. As long as they’re the Hollywood rich who “get it”. Who “understand”.

Granted they are fossil fuels, but I sincerely believe a civilization that can go from horse and buggy to supersonic transportation around the globe in a measly 100 years can solve the fuel/energy problem without the help of ANY govt. Let the market do what it does best, research & development and bring new technology to market. Ethanol: relatively low energy fuels that consumes food for people and animals.

Lead free gasoline: used MTBE to substitute for the octane booster. MTBE was discontinued due to the fact that infinitesimal amounts poisoned well water supplies. See ethanol as its replacement.

Emissions controls, while effective, have increased the average price of cars ten fold in the last 30 years. The attempt to squeeze more fuel efficiency out of cars beyond the laws of physics will probably double that increase.

Man made global warming: will crush the economies of the most productive countries of the world (except China and India of course) to offset what could charitably called a negligible effect.

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to a politician whose total scientific background consists of a few general science courses while he was in college, and which he effectively flunked. I gusee that explains the cowardly refusal of Gore to debate any of the “deniers.”

It’s positively mind bending. The new CAFE regs are gonna make a handful of people feel good about themselves for ramming legislation through. That is, until they see their constituents dying in much higher numbers because to achieve CAFE numbers, you need what??

Consider the mind-boggling illogic: we “borrow” the Earth from our children–but we were children once, so just when did we turn from lenders to borrowers? Can our parents repay this crushing debt? Is there a pre-payment penalty if they pay off their loan too soon? A balloon payment, maybe? And if people don’t have children, then what: do they remain lenders, or borrowers?

At bottom this is another example of mindless eco-weenie claptrap that collapses under examination — a saying perhaps taken from the “Collected Works” of that noted Native American Ward Churchill, or maybe sorrowfully intoned with a tear in his eye by Iron Eyes Cody (born a Sicilian!).

No, friend. This is American Indian teaching. That the hippies latched on to everything American Indian does not change the profound relation the Indians had w/this gorgeous planet. May I suggest ‘Black Elk Speaks’ http://www.cheapestbookprice.com/reviews/0803283857.html

To answer your question- If we were to live as though the next generation depends on how we live,… how much we use, destroy, replace, annihilate…because, in fact, IT DOES!!, we might live more honorably & in Peace w/’Mother Earth’.

coldfront, that’s….IT? A website??? As a source for an “ancient” Indian saying? On top of that — it’s still a mindless and illogical saying. You didn’t bother addressing that point, did you…

Geddoudaheah! Any Ward Churchill can make stuff like that up — and they do! because it makes them look good, and sets US up as oppressors. “Black Elk Speaks” is a perfect example of the idealization of Sioux culture — black elk doesn’t say how his own tribe contributed hugely to the near-extinction of the buffalo, once they got guns and horses from the Europeans.
Nor does he mention how the Sioux and others made vicious and genocidal war against each other, something that “Dances with Wolves” slid over as well: those Noble Lakota standing as symbols for all Indians, yet there were those pesky Pawnee pumping arrows into whites and Indians alike. Why were such peaceful folk as the Lakota called the Sioux…by their enemies? Were they warring over which tribe were the “True Caretakers”?

And who were the caretakers amongst the slave-owning death-worshiping Mayans shown in “Apocalypto”?

As for the Indians being such careful stewards of the Earth—-what a crock! Slash-and-burn agriculture, huge prairie fires set to drive thousands of buffalo over cliffs in order to gain the meat and hides of a few, and on and on.

    Here’s just one example:

    http://www.state.sc.us/forest/6wait.htm

“It was through agriculture that the Indians made their greatest impact on the natural environment. They cleared land by slash and burn techniques, deadening trees by chopping away the bark, then setting the area on fire. These fires doubtless burned large acreages of forest since the Indians had no way (or desire) to extinguish them once their original purpose was served. In these clearings, the Indians planted their crops of corn, squash, and gourds. When fields lost their natural fertility, the Indians simply abandoned them and applied the slash and burn process to another area. Abandoned fields and the clearings created by these wildfires eventually reverted to forest, creating extensive stands of pine.”

Will eco-weenies let anyone set large but **controlled** forest or brush fires these days? Ask the SoCal folks burned out of their homes about that, will you?

Do modern deerhunters start forest fires to drive their quarry into traps to be slaughtered by the hundreds?

Methinks you have a very idealistic view of what the past was like. Hint: there WAS no Golden Age. I suggest you read “Plagues of the Mind”, by Bruce Thornton, to learn how romanticized nonsense about the past has helped drive the politically-correct idealization of our ancestors as “caretakers” of the Earth.

I spoke to santa the other night when he was unloading the preseants for my children under the tree. I brought up this issue, especially all these people who were supposedly speaking for him about these bulbs and how they were saying he was worried about the North Pole would melt if we didn’t all cave in to the blackmail.

He told me that he was really, really mad about people speaking for him, and that the last thing he wanted was for people to change the way they were living in order to satisfy foolishness and some people’s big lie and blackmai;l He said this who ridiculousness about lightbulbs saving the North Pole was a joke and if people were stupid enough to buy into that crap, he had some marshland in the middle of the Sahara he wanted to sell them as well, and they could use it to build their new world on it with Algore as their Emperor.

He wanted me to spread the word that the planet was just fine, that the North Pole goes through phases just like every other par of the planet and for people not to listen to these new aged “snake oil” salesmen.

He said that keeping the air, water and ground clean is always a good idea, as after all, we do have to live, breathe and drink here, but to do so for our health. The planet has been here for billions of years and has lived through and survived dinosaurs, mammoths and things we haven’t even discovered yet, and will be around for billions of years more after it shakes us off like a bad habit. Don’t worry about saving the planet, worry about saving the humans. Stop being so damn egotistical.

He also said that if these people sat around discussing what Santa was saying about Global Warming, and people were litening to it, then no wonder they believed in Global Warming.

We discussed a few more things, how my kids were doing, how I was doing and my wife, had a shot of Crown Royal, he put his finger against his nose, gave it a nod, ad up the chimney he rose.

He was a great guy, really wise. Too bad he couldn’t have stayed longer. Seriously, you should have seen how pissed he got when I mentioned all these people pretending to speak for him. I thought he was going to blow a gasket.
