New Year’s resolutions: What’s yours?

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 31, 2007 04:13 PM

I resolve…

…to cook more, exercise more, and keep my four-year-old from beating me at Wii tennis.

A reader at Tim Blair’s resolves to “to increase my carbon footprint to something resembling a small country.”

How about you?

***

Mike Huckabee’s resolution: Run a sanctimoniously positive campaign…after he shows reporters his negative anti-Romney ad.

A suggested resolution for the Los Angeles Times: Resolve to make Patterico’s list shorter next year.

When asked this question, I go back to a “Haggar the Horrible” comic strip. When Haggar is asked about his New Years resolution, he responds:

“I resolve to eat as much as I want and drink as much as I want”
“What kind of resolution is that?”
    “One I can keep”

Have a happy New Year all!

Take up Cope or Skoal long-cut loose tobacco, you can’t eat while it’s in and you can’t spit it out cause you need the nicotine.

I’m down about 30% on my smoking because of it, may even get to 60% reduction in the near future, I love the stuff — thanks to the free coupons the mfgr sent me to induce me to try it.

Christian Soldier…I used to teach a dance class and two little girls came to me.
One was supposed to be hopeless because of ADD and I was told to forget
even trying to teach her. I taught her. I kept her interested and busy and made
her mother turn off the tv set and give the child books to read. She really
wasn’t ADD, she just had a terribly short attention span because of tv and the
programs she watched that were always being interrupted by commercials….. therefore, her attention span wasn’t developed.
I do not make resolutions because I do better deciding to do something when and if the occasion or need arises rather than to work from a list.

leepro…you may want to look into an exercise group that works out in a swimming pool. It is
much more forgiving of older bones. Also, and anyone laughs I will get you… anytime I
wanted something to eat (and knew it was just wanting something in place of a cigarette),
I would go brush my teeth. I never want to eat when I can still taste toothpaste. I also drink
water religiously because it takes the edge off. I taught an excercise class of very, very
elderly ladies (one was 92) once upon a time and a lot of exercises can be done sitting in a
straight back chair. There are also deep breathing exercises that help speed up your
metabolism. I’m 5′0″ and weigh more than feels comfortable to me, and I’m finding that
where once I had no trouble dropping weight..well, that’s definitely changed. You can try one thing that I do which is called square breathing. Inhale for a count of 4, hold the breathe for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 4 and hold the breath for a count of 4..
repeat. You can work up to longer counts as you become used to this. Really expand the
lungs and breathe so that your tummy expands when you inhale. When you exhale, make
certain that you really work to get all the breath out. It’s work, but it won’t hurt your joints. You can sit in the chair and do ab exercises by pulling your navel in toward your
spine and then pushing the abs back out.
See if any of this helps. Next time we’re posting at the same time, let me know how you
    are doing.

If not, happy 2008 anyway. I will sleep in and watch the RU486 Morning After Bowl, or whatever the heck the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl used to be called.

Thank you! What great advice! You sound like either an RN or a Physical Therapist (PTs are virtual saints! Every one of them!).

Just came back and there was your question, Katieanne. I try to do a
minimum of 8 sets twice a day, but I’m higher than 4. At first, do whatever
is most comfortable for you and try not to do them too fast because there
is a thing called breath of fire that vocalists and dancers have to watch out
    for. It’s a bummer!
leepro, I’m not a physical therapist. I was an accountant that raised an
asthmatic child. I’ve also been a dancer and have taught dance and
exercise classes in the evenings for my own exercise. I also developed some exercises for my elderly neighbor and a friend with health problems.
If either of you have any questions, go to Townhall.com and look up
Power of One Vote. You can leave your questions in the comment
section or your email if you would like to talk privately about whatever
exercises you are trying. Keep your chin up leepro. Its hard getting
started but once you take the first step it gets easier. Hey, I really don’t
like to work out and I hate to sweat! But I do it.

Thank you all for your responses. One of my problems is bad bones. Excruciating pain in back if on feet more than 10 minutes. Also both hips replaced, one of them twice (& deteriorating again). Can’t (not allowed to) do “rigorous” or weight-bearing exercise! Walking just doesn’t seem to do the trick…

I know all about the back pain, I have half a joint missing on my right side. Ok you just happened to hit someone who know’s how to lose the weight, your walking that’s good, the body does not know you’ve worked out (walking) unless you walk at least 40 min., I see even 10 min. of standing is difficult, exercise is accumualtive, if you go for 4-10 min. walks a day that’s your 40 min. for the day, walking is best done everyday, if you lifted weights I would tell you to do that 30 min. every other day.

Eating when you quit smoking is usally out of bordem. I remind you that a diet is not something you do it’s what you eat. If you crave carbohydrates, sweet’s is usally the problem but you may be craving any type of carbohydrate, what this means is you have eaten to many carbs in your previous meal if that is the case this is what you need to do. 3 meal’s eaten per day should contain the following 40% carbs, 30% protien’s, 30% monunsaturated fat’s this sound’s all scientific but it’s actually easy your protien should be no larger than the palm of your hand, 2 palm sized serving’s of good carbohydrates ones that digest slowly in the system so the sugar produced does’nt over fill the liver before it’s burnt off, this is because if the liver fill’s with sugar any overflow so to speak will turn to fat because the body think’s it may need it for lean times, green beans, broccoli, most green vegetables are good with the exception of lettuce, potatoes and other starchy vegetables are not good. Monounsaturated fat’s are derived from connola oil, olive oil, peanut oil also nut’s are a good source, cooking in these oil’s should give you the amount you need or add a tablespoon to the food, you only need a few nut’s to get the required amount if you like nut’s that is if not cook in the oil’s I stated above. You need 2 small healthy snacks in between your meal’s that give you a balance of carbs, protien and fat protien bars are a good snack but look at the label and make sure it has a good balance. Drink 6 to 8 ounce glasses of water a day the fat is dispossed of in your waste so this is imperitive that you drink water. Take a good multi vitamin daily, the way you can tell if the vitamin’s you are takin are any good is to put one in a glass of water and if it dissolves in a reasonable amout of time about 15 min. or so that’s a good vitamin, the body need’s these to burn the fat. The body will respond to your change in diet pretty quickley but atleast the first 8 to 10 pound’s lost is water don’t get discouraged if you stop losing wieght just keep following this, remember muscle weighs more than fat and as you walk you will gain muscle in the body so you may notice some dramatic weight loss at first then you may start gaining again. The best indicator is the way you look not how much you weigh if you weigh 300 lbs. and look incredible who cares how much you weigh. I hope I’ve helped in some small way the rest is up to you and I know you can do it I’ve known many people that have followed what I’ve told them and are very happy with their result’s. Good Luck and God Bless You.

Thank you for your help blind_mule. 6 small meals a day are good because that keeps the metabolism up. Soft drinks are bad (even diet)
because they are sweet and make you want more and more sweets.
If you leave the table before you are completely full, you will find that you
will if not lose weight, be less likely to gain weight. One thing to watch
when you are dieting. Too much water and by that I mean going over 64 oz a day, if you are not eating enough can lead to problems. There is a
thing called water intoxication that is rare but does happen. Any diet
and or exercise program should be followed carefully.
    Good luck.

First, let just say Happy New Year all.

I will try to get to BWI just to greet some soldiers. Here’s why:

I have always wanted to greet soldiers home from Iraq but just never found the time. Having an ill elderly parent to care for does seem to consume a lot of it. So this year’s annual Christmas family gathering this past Sunday was shaping up to be just like all others; lots of food, lots of kids running around and all the adults catching up. One of my brothers (I’ve got four of them) approached me with the idea of going to the Salisbury airport because his son’s teacher was expecting her son, Sgt. Casey Grodon, home on leave from Iraq. At first, I hesitated. We had just arrived and I was trying to get what food we brought cooked. Another brother said he’d take care of the food and out the door I went. It turned out to be a full minivan; me, my wife, daughter, her boyfriend, my brother, his wife and their son. My nephew was to represent his Cub Scout group. They had made a fairly large poster.

Anyway, we arrived and were quite early. As the time approached for his flight to land, the crowd just to greet this one soldier had grown to probably forty people. Family, friends, the local VFW, and local law enforcement were all represented. There were banners, placards and flags. Local TV and print had shown up too. I had no idea what to expect and all of this was a bit overwhelming when I tried to take it all in. Ha, I couldn’t imagine being that guy!

An announcement was made his flight from Philly is 10 mins early. We all get into place and watched as the plane flashes by. Mom yelled something out to make the plane taxi faster. Finally it parked, out of my view. Mom was getting increasingly impatient and started to give unheard instructions to the ground crew. Let him off!! Her son Casey was allowed to deplane first.

He finally walked into the small terminal, hesitating just a bit at the sight before him, eyes all glassy, and with a smile on his face. He was engulfed in a hug by his mom, surrounded by his dad and brother. The crowd roared with applause. Tissues appeared. After mom let go of Casey, he began to greet everyone. After some minutes, I looked in his direction and saw him on his knee talking to my nephew (he had his Cub Scout uniform on). He later told us Casey had asked him what he got for Christmas and thanked him for being here. All the posters and placards were collected and given to the family. As we left, we ran into the dad walking the family dog. She wanted to greet Casey too.

I got to say, it made my year. I may have missed spending time with my family but it was all worth it. I hope I can keep track of Sgt. Grodon and maybe greet him when he returns for good this summer. I will also pray for his safety and for his brethren.

God Bless Our Troops in Harm’s Way.

Regarding wii tennis, it is a blast, lots of fun. But there is nothing like the real sport of tennis. It is difficult to learn and the big problem is that Federer and Sharapova and other stars are so brilliant at what they do that they make the sport of tennis seem easy. And it difficult as can be and so many beginners quit. But start taking lessons, work at it religiously and results eventually come. When you reach a level of proficiency and you have some capacity with the backhand shot, then you will become addicted to tennis. I promise. Nobody who picks up tennis and sticks with the rough patches will ever give up this sport. It is something that is part of your DNA. Just check out the people in the public park when it is 100 degrees in the summer. To the uninitiated, it seems like madness. But to those of us who are tennis addicts, it is normal behavior. And tennis is not a rich man’s sport. Look at Rafa Nadal and the Williams sisters. I am an evangelist for this sport. Wii tennis is loads of fun but when you do the real thing, you will see what I mean.
