How did you ring in the new year?
The presidential candidates kicked off the year with new Iowa poll results from the Des Moines Register:
Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist minister riding a wave of support from fundamentalist Christians, tops Mitt Romney for first place in a new Des Moines Register poll of Iowans planning to attend Thursday’s Republican caucuses…
…The new poll, taken over four days ending on Sunday, shows a resurgent Arizona Sen. John McCain grabbing third place in the Republican race for the first-in-the-nation caucuses. McCain tallies support from 13 percent in the poll — a 6-point improvement since late November.
“He is not too far to the left or too far to the right,” said Keith Olejniczak, a 42-year-old poll participant from Cedar Rapids who makes McCain his second choice after Huckabee because of McCain’s experience and leadership ability. “I think (both candidates) could get more things done from both sides of Congress,” said Olejniczak, who works in transportation.
On McCain’s heels in the poll at 9 percent each are Texas Rep. Ron Paul, whose support in Iowa has gradually been building, and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson…
…- Nearly one-half of likely Republican caucusgoers describe themselves as born-again or fundamentalist Christians. Within that large group, Huckabee outpolls Romney, 47 percent to 20 percent. Romney has faced questions about his religious standing as a Mormon.
- Among those who think it’s more important for the next president to be a social conservative than a fiscal conservative, Huckabee leads Romney 48 percent to 24 percent. Romney holds a much narrower lead over Huckabee — 29 percent to 25 percent — among those who say it’s more important to be fiscally conservative.
- Among those caucusgoers who think it is very important for them to agree with a candidate’s religious beliefs, 54 percent favor Huckabee. – Huckabee scores highest in the poll as the candidate who matches caucusgoers’ own core principles.
The poll shows religious beliefs matter a great deal to likely Republican caucus participants in general. Those who think it helps the Republican Party to place greater emphasis on Christian beliefs outnumber those who think it is hurtful to the party, 47 percent to 29 percent.
Only about one-fourth of likely GOP caucusgoers say it is unimportant for them to agree with candidates’ religious beliefs.
On the Democrat side, Obama is increasing his lead over Hillary. Those polled ranked the war in Iraq the top issue, followed by health care, the economy, immigration, terrorism, religious values, and tax policy.
Interestingly, Obama beat Hillary in four out of five categories of leadership assets: “best able to bring about needed change,” most potential success in “unifying the country,” “experience and competence to lead,” and “matches core principles.” Hillary won the “best able to win the presidential election” category over Obama by 31-28.
Maybe Hill’s next campaign ad should show off her Jack Bauer endurance skills by filming her during a corkscrew landing to shore up those sagging leadership assets.
Or maybe she should just start handing out those nutcrackers. It’s crunch time!

I’m going to keep drinking, not out of joyful holiday spirit but out of depair that Huckabee might get chosen. I’ll thump a Bible as hard as any, but I’m not happy about Huck’s incursions into Iowa.

I rang in the New Year at home with my wife, Dick Clark’s rockin’ eve, and that dude on ESPN jumping his motorcycle over a football field in Las Vegas. I personally gave up being ten foot tall and bulletproof a few years ago, but someone has to be crazy I guess.
My wife had to work today, so she was asleep on the bed in our computer room (it acts as the 2nd bedroom) and I woke her up when the ball dropped in New York and again an hour later when it was midnight in Memphis (isn’t there a song there?).
I too hope that everyone stays safe in the new year, especially the troops, and especially the ones from my unit that are heading over for rotations.
I’m looking forward to the New Year’s Day meal consisting of hog’s jowl, cabbage, and black eye peas. YUM YUM!!!!

Maybe it was a Champagne cork, or was it? hmmmmmmmm.
I attended a small house party about a 1/4 mile away, fireworks, then hit the rack!

Happy New Year Michelle and everyone. Mrs. M.I.M. and I rang in the new year flipping between Dick Clark and a couple other channels.
We sat around all evening and chatted with our two eldest sons. We talked about life, friends, character, being honest with people and generally had a wonderful evening. I really appreciate my family.
New Year’s Eve Meal: Home Made Chile and Corn Bread, washed down with SN Pale Ale. Home made fudge to finish…Starting off 08 with a fatty bang!

Happy New Year Michelle! The wife had to work at O-Dark 30 today (as usual) so we were in bed fairly early. Must be getting old because we value our sleep over staying up to watch the show.
Starting today when we show up for work I guess we will be working for free to pay the tax bill for all the social programs being rammed down our throats. I love being an indentured of the Federal Government. Per the following I thought we were exempt:

Three of us from my office went to NYC to party but we stayed away from Times Square where all you do is stand for six hours inside a pen like you are cattle and at midnight there is a brief moment of media created excitement. Better to go to a nice restaurant and maybe a club, relax and then be out on 5th Avenue when the moment struck. The three of us realized that this is very likely the last full year we will live without a Clinton being president for the next eight years. The thought that Hillary Clinton and Bill will be reoccupying the White House was so depressing that, to quote Prince, we decided to “party like it’s 1999″. We all made resolutions to do something special in the last Clinton free year and two of us are going to Thailand, one to New Zealand. But on the way into NYC, we got out the electoral map and there is nothing we can do about it. HRC is almost destined to be president next January. It’s feel like living inside the great Canadian movie “Last Night”. We have only about 385 days to the time the dreaded moment arrives!
Larraby, jeepers man, you’re depressing. Hillary is going down in flames, cheer up.

Then son and daughter in law called from VA and talked awhile. Their sheltie

Never did quite understand the allure of New Years Eve even when I was younger. Used to call it “Amateur Night”
Unfortunate that 75% of Republicans’ vote is strongly influenced by the religion of a candidate instead of solely on the competence of the candidate. A candidate with no or a different religion is capable of respecting [other] religions and leading the country well.

With regard to the year just now history, here’s a vote of appreciation for your dogged efforts on many fronts, with particular appreciation both for what was surely a major contribution to the July defeat of “Shamnesty” and for steady vigilance since for the sundry shameful subterranean doings of open borders proponents.
However, in 2007 the Bush Administration, perhaps frightened by the possible consequences of success against the Kim family regime, perhaps beguiled by a ersatz notion of an arms-control legacy, jettisoned its sanctions against Banco Delta Asia. BDA is the Macao financial institution that facilitated the ability of the Kim family regime in northern Korea to reward its chief henchmen in its utterly atrocious oppression of 23 million people in northern Korea. The nuclear technology-related undertakings by the Kim family regime as payment for the lifting of the sanctions that were biting hard are becoming undone by the day, though this is without much interest to the “main-stream media”. Most importantly, the mass atrocity against the people of northern Korea goes on as we sit. Literature recounting the tribulations of those who have escaped to tell the tale, as Yodok Story and Aquariums of Pyongyang just begin to give an idea of the suffering being endured in northern Korea right now.
May all concerned here PRAY that the people of northern Korea will be delivered from the scourge of the Kim family regime during this very year 2008. polls based on “potential attendees” is a perfect example of why the “caucus” system sucks … a very small % of voters can or do attend them therefore nothing that comes out of that system is a true representation of the will of any sizable section of the people …

Spent the evening reading a very intense book, “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell. Lots of Kleenex. Wow. Given to me by a retired military relative last week. Wife worked on some business spreadsheet projects. The falling-ball of Times Square has never been of interest to us for years. Besides, it occurs here in Colorado at 10 pm Mountain Time! Rather boring watching mind numbed people watching a ball drop. Woke to a beautiful but frigid Colorado blue sky & sunshine morning. No regrets!
On your posting about Iowa, I don’t believe that being a Christian automatically qualifies someone to be President. Look at Jimmy Carter, he’s a Christian brother, BUT his failings as President are legendary. No, your fiscal policy and expertise are vital in this time of run-away government. I tend to lean towards Romney for his track record in business. We need a MANAGER, who also has some workable views on immigration and the protection of American sovereignty. Not perfect, but no one candidate is. I think Mitt’s personal track record is far better, obviously, than Rudy’s and Huckabee has too many glitches in some of his past doings as governor. No, I tend to lean towards Romney. Someone said that when you have to make a payroll, you tend to learn valuable lessons on fiscal responsibility, and God knows, we need someone to kick Congress’s A$$ at budget time!
I always tend to look at candidates that have been governors more seriously
that senators or mayors.
I believe that if you have governed a state you have more of an idea of what
it will take to be president. And…I do not believe that you can absorb
presidential experience by shaking hands with your husband. Besides, if
she and Slick were co-presidents, shouldn’t she be limited from running by
term limits? LOL

New Year’s Eve was run despite the creeping realization that with each passing day, the restoration of the House of Clinton comes closer to reality. The hacks control the Democrat Party and they will give Hillary the nomination regardless of what Obama does. Hillary wins Ohio and she is president. It is that gloomy!
As I mentioned before, I watched a movie on DVD called “Last Night” and it is almost as if the screenwriter envisioned the last day on earth before
Hillary becomes president!
I guess this is a bit late, but I rang it in by walking up to the “Evil WalMart” with my daughters and my eldest daughter’s friend from high school and loading up on frozen pizza, chips, dips, sodas, and other assorted garbage. My 9 year old then suggested for and activity we get a puzzle, so she picked out a 1000 piece puzzle. It has now turned into quite the project.
Anyway, we put on our hats when we got home, put on “Dick Clark’s Rocking New Year’s Eve”, worked on the puzzle with daughter’s wandering in and out, and eating garbage food, and drinking colored sugar water until midnight when we went outside and I lit off some fire works I had saved from the 4th of July. We toasted the new Years with a fine quality vintage of Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple Cider, I kissed three of the most precious and beautiful girls and the one most gorgeous and special and beautiful, intelligent, wonderful, fascinating, awesome woman I have ever known in my life a Happy New Year, went back in side, wound down, snuggled into bed with some of my little ones and a dog and a cat and went off to sleep wondering just what the new year would bring.
That’s how I brought it in. Not very exciting, not the big drunken brawl of my youth, but I’ll take it any day.
