What about Wyoming? “Where real America is.” Update And the first delegate goes to…
Update: Romney wins.
The former Massachusetts governor won six of the first eight delegates to be selected. Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson and California Rep. Duncan Hunter won one apiece, meaning no other candidate could beat Romney. Caucuses were still being held to decide all 12 delegates at stake.
The win was a boost for Romney, coming two days after his loss to Mike Huckabee in the Iowa caucuses and three days before the first-in-the- nation primary in New Hampshire.
Update: The first GOP presidential delegate goes to…Romney: “Mitt Romney won the first delegate elected to the Republican National Convention Saturday when Albany County chose Tammy Johnson as its representative to the convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul next September. She defeated a Fred Thompson supporter and an uncommitted candidate at the county convention in Laramie. Eleven more delegates were to be elected throughout the day in other counties.”
***
As I mentioned the other day, Wyoming Republicans hold their county conventions today to choose the nation’s first 12 presidential delegates. The state GOP party is coming under criticism for moving up the event to try and capitalize on the post-Iowa, pre-New Hampshire window. Few candidates and fewer national media have paid attention; the national GOP is punishing the early vote by suspending half of the state’s national conventional delegates. The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle called the process “futile.” Newsbusters underscores that the GOP wants all the voting to be wrapped up by 3pm to meet the New York Times’ filing deadline. Based on conversations with local officials, Jim Geraghty predicts “eight delegates for Romney, two delegates for Thompson, one delegate for Ron Paul, and one delegate for Duncan Hunter.” Rick Moran says the states aren’t very high, but Fred Thompson has the most to gain from a Wyoming win.
MichelleMalkin.com readers from Wyoming weighed in. Commenter Walterc wrote:
It’s only the GOP that is picking delegates this Saturday (the Dems will be picking in March I think). We have so few democrats in this area that for state and local offices the primary in August is usually the general election since the winner is generally unopposed in the general election in November.
Wyoming has 28 delegates to the national convention but since the caucuses are being held before the NH primary, the National party says they are going to disallow 14 from voting. (It may be 26 and 13 since I’ve heard those numbers bandied about too.)
Each county will pick ether a national delegate or an alternate (they alternate election years) along with delegates for the state convention in May. So half of the 28 will be chosen this Saturday and the other half will be elected at state convention in May.
Since the delegates elected in May are “at large” and the delegates elected this weekend will represent their county, the State party says that if the National party disallows some of the delegates, the delegates elected at the convention in May will be the first to be dropped.
This weekends caucuses/conventions will elect county delegates to the State convention also.
Here in Gillette (in the NE Corner) we had Duncan Hunter and one of Romney’s sons. That’s more attention than we’ve had from presidential candidates in decades.
Dick Cheney is originally from Casper, but now has a house in Jackson.

Hi Michelle,
I actually live in WY. Interesting how the press even gets in wrong, referring to our county conventions as caucuses. Our caucuses actually took place in December. Wyoming is a convention state, and this is the first time in history that we’ve ever had a voice in presidential primary politics.
The precinct committee men and women are the only ones with a vote in most of the counties. You’d be surprised at how some of the candidates have catered to these people for their votes.
Personally, it’s been stressful and I’ll be glad when tomorrow is over.
Rep. Duncan Hunter’s wife is in Wyoming and gave Westerners a boost:
Lynne Hunter spent Thursday in Rock Springs and was headed through Rawlins and Laramie on her way to Cheyenne for convention day.
“I think Wyoming’s very important because this is where real America is,” she said. “I don’t think real America is Iowa. I don’t mean that in a mean way, but this is where the real people are, in the Western states.”

Big Sky Country, Big hopes for Fred.
Go Fred Go!
Typical of the beltway/NYC crowd to ignore “fly over country”.
God Bless Wyoming, part of the Real America.
What? Not taking the opportunity to print a false story about Fred Thompson again to spike his performance? How many points did your reprint cost Thompson in Iowa?
Retract your reposting of the story, and apologize to Fred Thompson, Michelle, its the right thing to do.
I don’t say this because I support Thompson, but because it’s right. Are you no better than Geraldo?
c’mon melvin, get over it already.
Ha! You all know it is up to Florida and Chad!!!
I thought Chad died?
Oh, I forgot – go Skins!
soap….watch it.
Real America is everywhere the media doesn’t look or report. Paul took over 10% in Iowa, handily beating Giuliani and finishing right behind Thompson and McCain. This despite that Giuliani made more visits to Iowa. Paul also took first place (29%) among independent Republicans!
She’s going to be First Lady of the United States of the REAL America? Maybe Duncan can build a fence around the REAL American people? Whiners!
If a glowing orb gave me the power to choose the next Pres. and vice Pres. for me it would still be Hunter/Thompson.
I also do not understand why all of the Conservative blogs did not rally around Fred early on. It is not that he is better qualified than Hunter, only that he has a real chance of winning….& all the blogs that did not figure this out early are responsible for what is happening now.
When in a SINKing boat,…make a quick decision & deal!!! because All of this ‘bashing all of the candidates equally!’ & blah blah blah on my blog… doesn’t work anymore.
If a glowing orb gave you that kind of power why not make yourself King of all Wyoming.
Also to note from Planet Jackson Hole Online:
Great going Wyoming!!
Hmm, why do I suspect most of these “independent Republican” supporters of madman Ron Paul will be voting for Obama or Hillary in the general election?
These mad Ron Paul supporters are hardly representing “Real America” but they are being successful right now in trying to create another Ross Perot phenomenon, hoping for a third party run. Without Ross Perot Bill Clinton would never have been elected.
I’m confused with all this talk of “Real America”. Do I need a passport or visa to go there because all I’ve got is a Texas DL and a Social Security Card and as you well know, you can get those just about anywhere.

Fred’s problems were Fred’s problems.
Talk about sour grapes, Lynn Hunter. Could it be that Duncan just didn’t do very well in Iowa? We are about as real as it gets. I wonder what an unreal American would look like?
#17 And why is it that Thompson was a loser in Iowa and McCain a media-appointed winner even though Thompson finished ahead of McCain?
Also, how does McCain win in NH if the independents want to crown Obambi over Shrillary in the open primary?
Saw that O’Reilly won’t discuss Thompson’s ideas about anything because Thompson won’t appear on “The Factor”. It’s getting so that even without Geraldo frequent visits I am getting really disgusted with the host. I know he thinks Lurch is a patriot and the Swiftboaters are liars. Most all the TV talking heads are good at gatekeeping their own biases.
I’m hosting a live event to discuss the Wyoming results as we get them. For the most breaking coverage, stop by.
Last I checked, I wasn’t a “mad” Ron Paul supporter. The only time I’m mad is when I look at how the Old Repulbican Party was hijacked by the New “neocon” Republican Party with their Islamofacism battle cry.
Latest Rasmussen report has Ron Paul gaining 7% and is now polling at 14% in New Hampshire. It’s a MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD World!
3rd party run for Ron Paul? Yeahforsureyoubetya!
It’s not like the Republican party with their current war mongering mantra stands a chance with their current crop of candidates anyway.
Fed Up
So, fed up Wheres the war mongering wanting to defend our nation from terroism or is it just a bumper sticker to you as well?
ajmontana
well said … beat me to it there …
The Soviet Union was handled without the U.S. engaging them correct? So, did Iraq attack us? Is the New Republican Party about “killing them before they kill us?” as former Presidential candidate Gary Bauer has personally said to me?
You defend a nation by securing its borders first. This was not the case on 9/11 as we were busy defending 130 other nations borders. To remedy the situation we attack a country that did not participate in 9/11 and did not attack us.
This is not the policy of the Old Republicans prior to the neocon’s implementation of Irving Kristols philosophy. The Republican party changed. Ron Paul didn’t.
Fed Up
I’d like to hang and chat but it’s game time folks and all my energy is going into the NFL…. enjoy.
Go Seahawks!!!
ditto to that aj
Go Washington!
hehe
lol, enjoy the game….
ot-
geez I started to watch and have to wait, olberdork was talking.. good grief.
“Fed Up” hardly sounds like he is a conservative or ever was. His statements about 9/11 and Iraq sound like they are coming from a liberal’s mouth–as well as his wanting Ron Paul to run as a third party candidate, which would ensure an Obama or Clinton victory.
The Democrat and MSM play book for this election is obvious: Try to get the worst candidate the Republican nomination, which is Huckabee. Register as many new “Republican” and “independent” voters to vote for either Huckabee or crazy Ron Paul–who still doesn’t understand the nature of the Muslim threat–in the primaries. Then clamor for nutty Ron Paul to run as a third party candidate.
Though I would prefer Romney, McCain is starting to look better and better–just to dash Democrats’ hopes.
It seems like posting to this thread is much like playing in traffic. Having so acknowledged the risk, I’m infuriated that some organization other than the DNC is so enabled to count the votes/delegates as they wish. It smacks very much of Tammany Hall politics (NYC 1790-1960). If I understand the situation, Iowa having say 25 republican delegates, 33% allocated to Huckabee or 8.25 delegates, and Romney has 8 Wyoming delegates to be relegated to 4 delegates then the national GOP has handed Huckabee a gratuitous 4 national delegates verses Romney. Now this is the kind of government Ron Paul can work with and worse than Washington State’s Gregoire-Gore method of counting votes.
bit_boy,
Go back and read the first blocked in section of this post and I believe you’ll understand the situation better.
Sure, & they all came w/ ‘problems’ save maybe Hunter whose only problem was the MSM….however, Fred was the only one who said up front ‘Any religion that thinks killing innocent women & children for their god is ok, is NOT a religion I want to be any part of.’ (aprox.quote)
Please to be showing me any candidate who has made a statement remotely resembling that???! Then show me the candidate who came w/out problems.
As concerns the enthusiasm issue, the next POTUS is going to be facing down the barrel of sharia in America.
OT
Pic of Obama with Odinga, the Muslim who burned alive over 50 Christians in a Church in Kenya. Odinga says he will bring Sharia to Christians within a year.

We are looking at another Idi Amin here.
Interesting you say that I “hardly sound like a conservative” because of my statement; “To remedy the situation we attack a country that did not participate in 9/11 and did not attack us.”
Can you explain to me how this mantra was the platform of any Republican Party prior to 2004?
Remember, it was the Republican Party that got us out of the undeclared wars of Vietnam and Korea.
I suggest you read Rothbard’s “The Betrayal of the America Right” before we discuss any further. You can find a copy here: http://www.mises.org/store/Betrayal-of-the-American-Right-The-P434C0.aspx
Maybe then you can distinguish between “crazy” as you characterize Ron Paul and “hijacked” as the neocons have done to the Republican party. Ron Paul IS what the Old Republican Party stood for.
Peace! (from a non-liberal)
Fed Up
Much of what I hear from purported conservatives around the blogosphere is a litany of complaints about the so-called neocons destroying America and the Republican party. They insist we should emulate the Euroweenies and get along with everyone. They claim America is at fault for much of world’s ills and that the world was with America immediately after 911 and then the neocons blew it all with their hawkish unilateral warmongering. Of course there has to be quite a load of revisonist history that overlooks what the Eurotrash and Clinton administration had to say about Hussein and WMD, well before Dubya even ran for Prez. Then there is the fact they ignore that we were already in a state of war with Iraq since Gulf War I as Iraq continued to fire upon our planes and ignored all those sacrosanct UN resolutions. We later learned that the French and Russians had other things going on with Iraq related to bribes, food for oil, business supplying munitions to Iraq, etc.
This whole identity thing about Huckabee being the one because he supposedly shares his Christian values and could negotiate with Islam is just so much hot air to me. The biggest jackasses I’ve seen on the pseudo-right march to the isolationist beat of the PaulWads which have no problem with support from CAIR, antisemitics in general and the neonazis, Stormfront et al.
And when will the media bother to expose just some of the outright lies the preacher man spreads, such as he lowered taxes in Ark.? He actually raised them a net $500 million. Not to mention Obambi shady dealings when he first entered politics? And all the water under the bridge malfeasances regarding the white trash Clintons?
Anyone, but huck, rudy, or mccrazy!
gollumclone,
I suggest watch the BBC documentary (which is not from a liberal point of view) “The Power of Nightmares.” You can find a free youtube version of it via a simple search.
This movement started well before Gulf War I. Matter of fact, they were upset with GHWB over his not finishing the job.
Regarding the support Ron Paul has received from those you don’t share the same view with, if that is all you have to criticize Paul with, then this should be a landslide victory for him.
In America, we have the right to give our financial support to whomever we choose. Perhaps you’d like the state to tell you who you can donate to?
Fed Up
Congrats atxcowgirl, you live in one of the last states that still believes in what our country stands for. With all of the migration from the left coasts to Colorado, our state has become foul with nannyism, the religion of Gorbal Worming, sanctuary for illegals, and socialism.
I’ve said for the past few years that once our kids have graduated from high school, we’ll move north where the West is still the West and not pansyfied by Californians.
3.5 years and counting…..
Let me tell my fellow Fred Folk a story about Wyoming.
I had about several dozen volunteer leaders from Wyoming – names, addresses, phone numbers, emails. We are organizing for Fred up in Wyoming and a few helping from Denver (including myself).
And guess what? In August, with all the campaign management changes, we stopped hearing from the Thompson Campaign. County/Precinct leaders didn’t get calls they expected. We go no “official” authorization to act, and so could do nothing more. We tried to hand over our volunteer lists to the campaign – and NOBODY BOTHERED to even respond with an email or phone call.
The dozens we had probably do not sound like much to you folks back East, but its a seed that was planted this summer, and in Wyoming, a small state, that seed, if it were grown, would have been enough to capture several more delegates for Thompson.
Fred Thompson lost in Wyoming because his campaign staff depended on cronies and old-boy networks like Cheney, and discarded and ignored the grass roots that got Fred his initial push.
Right now, in Colorado, we are a month away from our caucuses. And I and many others who are fed up with the Same-Old-People, we want to volunteer for Fred, and have indicated as much on the website, have heard ZERO.
Now this isn’t to say that there may be campaign officials in Wyoming and now Colorado for Fred. But I’ll be damned if I have heard them or heard from them.
There is no organization, no people, no NOTHING for Fred in Colorado (or at least nothing/nobody is reaching out).
Absent a huge change, Fred is going to be shut out here in Colorado – Romney and McCain are already organized and locking up endorsements; Giuliani has a lot of big-money folks in Denver that are setting up as well.
Don;t misconstrue this: I really REALLY want Fred to win – he is the ONLY candidate that meets all the conservative points – immigration, border security, defense, smaller government, federalism, pro-life/abortion, taxes/fiscal policy, etc. None of the other candidates have all the right conservative positions. And there are some who I will simply never vote for, namely Paul and Huckabee (and I may not even be able to hold my nose and pull the lever for Giuliani). But the one error the Fred! campaign is making out west is that ***you can’t win if you don’t run***
And right now, in terms of presence, he is not running at all here.
I’ll back Fred to the end (and sent him money Friday, and will send a few hundred more next payday as well), but I fear the end result may be more losses absent a radical change to how his campaign is run.
What ever happened to the candidate that “talked” directly to us grass roots – and the campaign that valued us? I think dropping Mark Corallo was a huge mistake for Fred. Because when he left, the grass roots were thrown out in favor of catering to “professionals”.
Just my opinion. Feel free to disagree.
The only candidate who can win over ALL types of conservative…fiscal, defense, AND social is Mitt Romney. Go Mitt!
Thanks for the mention Michelle. Yesterday was a long day in Fremont County, WY, thanks to the Ron Paul moonbats converging on our Convention. Many of them only registered within the last couple of weeks. They caused the convention process to take about 4 hours longer than necessary, which made it sweet to watch them lose in the first round of voting. Talk about a disrespectful bunch of morons, I wouldn’t wish those loons on my worst enemies.
Anyway, Hunter is my favorite candidate, but I was glad to see Thompson win a few counties. Thompson could have done so much better with more campaigning to this state. Romney actually campaigned here and it obviously paid off well. I hope this is a lesson learned for the future, now that the little state of WY is a future player in Presidential politics.
This post only goes to strengthen my own opinion that Fred is ONLY IN IT TO DRAFT FOR McCAIN.
Because he refused to enter until McCain’s campaign was crashing – yet when McCain instantly rallied, Fred, new to the official race, began turning down NUMEROUS PRIME and also not-so-prime opportunities for interviews that would have set his campaign on fire, claiming he needed to get his structure prepared better – he was beating folks AWAY like flies, all over the USA, all over FOX NEWS, not just O’ – and his campaign essentially went on “Vacation Mode” each time McCain began to thrive!
You made one remark that SEEMED to not appreciate McCain’s finer points – you do know that Fred was his 2000 Campaign Manager???
That often in 2007, Fred repeated that McCain would be a very fine Presidient???
You know that originally, Fred’s name was on McCain Feingold, that he did help write and sponsor it, and he worked perhaps the hardest to push it, that after several different opportunities that Sean Hannity gave Fred to renounce McCain Feingold, he still said it was the right thing to do, but if he had a chance to do anything about it, he’d tweak the financing of campaigns, some more – refused to denounce the attack on FREEDOM OF SPEECH BY COMMON CITIZENS regarding political matters???

EDITED transcript
[I notice the phrase he used regarding Bill Clinton's perjury: "TRIVIAL MATTER" was one of those things EDITED, ~~~OBVIOUSLY~~~ just "for space"]
If I have to keep on telling folks about his vote supporting Bill Clinton, and repudiating the work of 98% of the GOP – plus his chairmanship of the Senate committee ASSIGNED TO INVESTIGATE Chinese donations to the Clinton Campaign funds, which Fred diverted to go witch-hunting for GOP members to form a tit-for-tat blame game, I’m going to go absolutely BANSHEE on Fred and his supporters.
“The vote of your opponents is the most honorable mark by which the soundness of your conduct could be stamped. I claim the same honorable testimonial. There was but a single act of my whole administration of which [the opposing] party approved… And when I found they approved of it, I confess I began strongly to apprehend I had done wrong, and to exclaim with the Psalmist, ‘Lord, what have I done that the wicked should praise me?’” –Thomas Jefferson to Elbridge Gerry, 1812. ME 13:162
When this former Watergate prosecutor doesn’t mind voting with the DIMS to support Bill Clinton against LIVE-AIRED PERJURY, refutiating all that our Founding Fahters stand for…
He ain’t the man I will vote for to be assigned the job of appointing Judges.
“JUST A TRIVIAL MATTER”???????
EVERY SUPREME COURT JUSTICE INCLUDING CLINTON APPOINTEES then UNANIMOUSLY BOYCOTTED Bill Clinton’s last State of the Union Address, in protest.
I don’t have to take this aggregious breach of Justice from a FORMER PROSECUTOR who wears the GOP label.
Conservative? of what!!! THE CLINTON LEGACY??????
That don’t remind ME of what I am looking for!
Mitt seems to be severely antagonizing the open borders/tax-hiking “conservatives” who support McCain and Huckleberry. And even Fred’s campaign is sending out anti-Mitt e-mails, now. hhhmmm…
Ed Rollins, Huckleberry’s camapaign manager and former campaign manager of H. Ross Perot, is fairly going rabid over Mitt, as well. Just like McCain and Huckleberry!
I gotta tell ya, when McCain hates a GOP member so much…
hhhmmmm…..
From such an amiable guy, too – I mean, gee, McCain gets along so well with Toady Chappaquiddick Kennedy, gets along so well with Hanoi John that he was his #1 pick for running mate…
and keeps telling us how much he admires Mrs. Clinton….
And Huckleberry – so proud of his pastorly kindliness towards Clinton’s admission of whatever that was with Monica Lewesky – “THAT WOMAN”!!!
And they cannot contain themselves regarding Mitt???
Gee, what did Mitt do to gain such animosity from them!
[/sarcasm]
