Hillary and the “Access Hollywood” Factor

Hillary and Access Hollywood host Maria Menounos: Say cheese.

Women made up 57 percent of the Dem vote in New Hampshire. Turning around her Iowa loss, Hillary trumped Obama among the female folk this time–claiming 46 percent to 34 percent. How’d she do it? How’d she take back the women vote from Obama?

I flippantly mentioned soap opera watchers last night.

But I think there’s another answer: The “Access Hollywood” Factor.

In case you’ve never heard of it or watched it before, “Access Hollywood” is an Entertainment Tonight-style knock-off. The show peddles celebrity gossip, music, and fashion. Hillary appeared on the popular program in an “exclusive,” two-part sitdown with Access Hollywood host (and Hillary suck-up) Maria Menounos that aired over the last two days before the NH primary vote.

What did they talk about? Not foreign policy. Not health care nitty-gritty. Not housing bailouts. Not Iraq or Iran.

They yammered instead about body image, housekeeping, and “Dancing with the Stars” (which she claims is her favorite TV show). The watery-eyed moment in Portsmouth alone didn’t seal the deal. It was most likely follow-up interviews like the “Access Hollywood” segments targeting the Boniva set that were the clinchers:

Asked if she, like many other women, is concerned about her weight and body image, Clinton replied, “Who isn’t, really?”

However, the former first lady said she can count on her friends to help her deal with those insecurities.

“I have such a great group of friends — friends that I have going back to literally kindergarten. Sometimes we have the same conversations we had in high school or college. I am still being kidded by my friends because I am hopeless when it comes to doing my own hair,” she revealed.

The Democratic U.S. senator from New York said when she has a few moments to herself, she likes to catch up on her sleep, spend time outdoors with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and even occasionally take in a movie by herself.

She also confided she likes organizing spaces in her home, adding, “I find cleaning closets and drawers to be extremely gratifying because you know there is a beginning, a middle and an end, unlike a lot of what I do which seems to be much more long term.”

Giggle, giggle. Just one of the gals. Are older women silly enough to fall for this horse manure? Apparently so.

Watch the interview for a closer look at Hollywood sycophancy in action.

So much for that “breathtaking disadvantage,” eh, Bill?

I think such interviews help people to warm up to the candidates. Let’s face it, most of the general public tend not to know what each of the candidates stand for or what their character is like. In fact, one of your major criticisms of Hillary is how she always seems aloof, cold and distant – sorta out of touch with the common voter. Appearing on a program like that, just giggling and being one of the gals can go a long way to making people warm to her.

I think it was a smart move by HRHC and it was a dumb move by the electorate.

Best suggestion posted here as to what movie(s) Hill likes to watch alone ought to get a prize (Michelle, anything in our prize vault?).

    I’ll start:

    “Mommie Dearest”?

I’m thinking The Godfather trilogy. She got a lot of ideas about how to run a campaign from that run.

It was the Bradley effect. New Hampshire was one of the last states to make Martin Luther Kind day a holiday. The state has lots of Massachusetts transplants and Massachusetts was big in the school busing controversies of the 70’s.

White Democrats can be pretty racist. I half expect to hear Bill Clinton call Obama a “boy” any day.

Almost all of the clips that i saw yesterday were of people using paper ballots, Clinton had a lot of supporters brought in from out of state for her rallies. The running out of ballots, the fact that N.H. was the state were Bill made his come back.

The mistake liberals make is that they think other people actually care what they have to say. Who would go through the trouble of eavesdropping on their rantings?

First of all, does anyone buy the claim that Hillary likes “Dancing with the Stars”? Second of all, it will probably work with a lot of the dummies who watch that show, as disgusting of a thought as that is.

Now, Maria Menounos is hot, but also a moron. I wouldn’t expect a very hard hitting interview… but again, that wasn’t what it was a bout.. it was about Hillary getting out the moron vote. Who else watches that garbage? Morons (aka, liberals). If you’re a Democrat, you’re either a fundamentally dishonest person or stupid… and Hillary knows this.

But the lack of talking about real issues is my problem with Obama more than anyone. I mean, it’s not shocking for a Dem to behave this way, but he is so general. He never answers specific questions or does tough interviews. He’s riding the likability wave and it makes me sick. He stumbled when Kilmeade asked him if we should fight Al Qaeda in Iraq since he (Obama) wants us fighting them in Afghanistan. It was like he’d never been asked a very simple question before… and it’s because largely, he hasn’t. Obama is used to a bunch of idiots and college kids chasing him around because he’s “likable”. You’ve also got the contingent who feels like they’re part of something (similar to bond between Truthers) by voting for “a black guy”. They feel like they’re part of history, it makes them cool on campus, and they feel like they’re rebelling against their white parents who’s white privilege gave them everything they have.

Not just older women, I’m afraid. It just goes to show how the power of emotion over intellect in the electorate. If Hillary and Huck and a few others have their way, we’re approaching the equivalent of a high school popularity contest next November. (You know – from the Foreign Affairs article where he likened our stature in the world to being the nice kid everybody liked in HS.)

My sister, who is otherwise able to sniff out a phony from a mile away and will then emphatically proclaim her opinion from the housetops, shocked me the other day when she said she favors John Edwards. I asked her why and she said because of his upbringing in a poor family. Apparently she hasn’t had much time to watch the news lately. (Or maybe she has, but has been watching the wrong outlets!) Anyway, her perception of Edwards is based on the same premise as this Clinton tactic. There are too many Americans tuned out of or fed up with the political process, and too many Americans who believe everything they see or hear on the news. Heaven help us!
