To Michigan and beyond

Update: What wrecked Detroit and Michigan? Tom Bethell has answers.

Update: Low, 20 percent turnout expected.

Update: Go see one of my all-time favorite, coffee-spewing Allah photoshops of Hillary here.

Update: Drudge is calling the race “The Real American Idol.” He’s got the wrong analogy. American Idol is too orderly.

This is a WWF Superwrestlemania Steel Cage Challenge.

***
David Freddoso has a thorough look at the wide-open GOP primaries through Super Tuesday. The one thing this presidential horse race is not is boring. As much as I’ve griped about the deficiencies in the field, I do have to say that I prefer this process to the early coronation of a single candidate (e.g., Bush in 2000). Freddoso writes:

Consider:

-Even a win in Michigan next Tuesday cannot guarantee McCain anything further. He will probably do poorly in Nevada next Saturday and South Carolina will at least be a challenge.

-Although it appears unlikely, no one can yet rule out a Florida resurrection by Rudy Giuliani.

-Mike Huckabee could win Michigan and South Carolina, and then dominate the South on February 5, but is likely to lose badly throughout the West and the Northeast.

-Mitt Romney could still win in Nevada next Saturday — a state with more delegates than either Michigan or South Carolina. He could keep it close or even stay ahead in the delegate count with a “second-place-everywhere-until-Super-Tuesday” strategy, since most of the early states award delegates proportionally or by congressional district.

-And while it seems doubtful, it’s conceivable that Fred Thompson could win South Carolina after his debate performance.

In other words, the race remains uncertain. So many unsatisfactory candidates, and so many that remain potentially viable even now. This, plus the geography of the upcoming primaries, could be a recipe for continued turbulence.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Obama and Hillary are making some sort of peace.

Hillary thinks the White House is like jail.

Christopher Hitchens savaged The Glacier.

Mark Levin savaged The Maverick.

And the Green Party held its nutball convergence in San Francisco (where else?)

I’m quite distressed about the Republican field of presidential candidates.

Rudy is a slime and certainly not a conservative,

McCain makes me sick with his immigration ideas, his tax policies, his compromising ways with the dems, and his temper/bullying attitude,

Thompson’s policies fit my philosophy, but I don’t think he has the leadership or executive skills needed to be President. His campaign has been weak,

Huckabee is a fraud! His populist message just turns me off. He’s weak on immigration and many other traditional Republican issues. He seems to be more of a democratic socialist. He likes to bash corporations, Bush, banks, etc. On many issues, I doubt if he would be much different than the dems. I’m not looking to elect a minister, I’m looking for a Presdient,

Romney’s private sector background impresses me and I would like a non career politician, but Romney’s campaign has been disappointing. He seems stiff and sticks to the same ole pat messages over and over. He doesn’t answer questions directly or effectively. He’s strong on immigration, but Thompson did a much better job of articulating the issue.

Unless Thompson shows so leadership ability soon, I will continue to support Romney, but not with as much enthusiasm as a few months ago.

It’s a sad state of affairs in the Republican party. I fear for the future of our country with Clinton or Obama as President. I don’t think there is really an ounce of difference between them on policy. It’s all image.

If Hillary thinks the White House is like a jail, then why does she want to so desperatly get back in there? A guilty concience perhaps.

I want to know should the unthinkable happen and she(Hillary) does get elected, will there be any investigations into her dealings with the Chinese government at all. Or will congress tuern a blind eye as before?

The conventional wisdom that every Repub candidate is just one primary loss away from dropping out of the race is humorous. Hasn’t every one of them been pronounced either “dead” or “can’t possibly win the nomination” at least once? And yet one of them has to win it. They can’t all lose! I guess I’m still backing Romney, except he doesn’t connect with people on an emotional level, so I fear for his general election chances. Whenever he answers a question it’s like someone just handed him his response on a piece of paper and he’s reading it without it coming from the gut. As this contest goes on for weeks more it will be very interesting to see how each candidate responds to this grueling test. The sense of exultation/resignation in the voices of the winners/losers is almost poignant. You can see how well Mitt is doing by how much his wife is smiling, or more recently, not smiling!

It would save millions of dollars that could be put to better use than supporting this disappointing field of candidates (except for Thompson and Hunter). The upside is the losers would never be heard from again. The only thing that scares me is “she who must not be named” would wipe the floor with the metrosexual girlie men in the Democrat party.

I think there are at least three wild cards that will effect the election more than anyone can predict. One is the economy, another is the WoT in all its forms, and the other is the simple length of the campaign.

On the last, I expect more than one candidate to implode at some point. There are too many opportunities for a Dean Scream or for a campaign to simply wear out. It could be anyone, and it’s why Fred’s strategy of taking it slow has been smart. I also suspect that the length of time that most of the candidates have been actively campaigning will turn off some voters. I wouldn’t be surprised, unless something from the outside inspires them, if we see a really low turnout in November.

I get the attraction to Sen. Thompson, but doesn’t he actually have to “get a result” in a primary in the very near future in order to have any kind of chance? If he doesn’t finish first or second in SC, how does he credibly move forward as a viable candidate?

You’re right, dakine, Fred does need results. Which is why he is working so hard in SC to get results. The indications are he’ll get results. He’s up in the polls and his followers are increasing in numbers and enthusiam.

Last week his website set a goal of $540,000 by Jan. 11th. They reached the goal so quickly they raised the bar twice. Last night they went over the $1,000,000 mark and donations are still rolling in.

Yes, we do need to actually take a vote to see just how well it’s working. But I’m highly optimistic about the outcome and getting more optimistic every day.

    Go get ‘em Fred!

Why are people feeling obligated to clap at this phantom made up soldier with an alleged illegal alien mother? Who is that soldier? Bring him out, prove he exists. People need to stop with the PC. Just because someone uses the words veteran, POW, or soldier, it does not mean it is in good context. John Kerry was a veteral too! and so was Murtha.
