Let it snow
It’s snowing here in Maryland. Here’s the view from our living room window:
Longtime readers will be familiar with our traditional family snow cream recipe. Dessert is served!
Large bowl full of fresh, clean snow
1 cup of whole milk
1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract
1/2 cup of sugar
Mix milk, vanilla, and sugar until dissolved. Add to snow, stir until consistency is thick and creamy. Serve immediately.
Yum.

OK, NEVER having heard of your “Traditional Family Snow Cream Recipe”, I’m a bit intrigued.
Now if only we can get some of that snow on Long Island when they SAY we’re going to get it, my boys & I might be able to make some!!!

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,

New England has something similar—but the recipe uses maple syrup. Also yum!
I watched it from my desk in Alexandria. Office manager said we could leave early if it was still snowing at 4:00pm, so of course it stopped around quarter-of.
Most people left anyway.
Graysonret. I’d say we’re neighbors but Faifax County is huge. I’m a couple miles south of The Mixing Bowl.
That’s about as close as I want to get to snow, thank you very much. I don’t have to shovel AZ sunshine off my driveway.
PS: I’m a former MD resident and don’t miss your snow, or your taxes, or your moonbat dominated state government.

I too once lived in MD (Laurel) … when I moved to AZ I actually brought my snow shovel cross-country just so I could break it in half and throw it away …
We had some really gorgeous, large, wet snowflakes here in middle Tennessee last night and the wife and I (both teachers) were doing the “snow dance”. Alas, it didn’t stick and we had school today. Sigh. I love snow–school or no. Lucky you, Michelle!

No Snow Cream For me!
Considering Maryland’s proximity to New Jersey the industrial waste capital of the US, I’d think twice before eating ice because the adverse effects wouldn’t be nice. As nice and pure as it may look, remember precipitation is nature’s way of cleaning the air.

It snowed Christmas Eve of 05 so we don’t expect to see it again for another 100 years down here on the TX Gulf Coast. Did live in VA for several years and loved the snow when it came but never got the hang of driving in it. I did do the ditch thing one time and that was enough for me! meatpieandtaters you are such downer about dirty snow, but your right! Bummer.

Have you ever let “fresh, clean snow” sit in a glass and melt? Not as fresh and clean as you might think =P
For those complaining about the dirt in snow, as a friend of mine often says (especially when a bit of camping dinner hits the deck), “A little bit of dirt never killed anybody.”

I love snow-cream! My grandmother use to make it for us when we were kids. Thanks MM, for bringing back the memories, and for reminding us that it is never too late to create them with our own families!
#34…Surely, a little dirt adds minerals to our diet. Fallout from New Jersey on other hand may contain inorganic compounds, hexivalent chromium and God only knows what. As a camper/outdoors type I’m into dirt in many ways. I just won’t advocate for Snow Cream Sundays from the Eastern US.

Global warming? What global warming? We got 72″ of snow in a 4-day storm here in the Sierra two weeks ago. Yes, 72″.
And there was a story on Drudge today about Greenland having 50cm of ice and -25 degree temps.

Most of the New Jersey fallout goes out to sea; the last time I checked, the prevailing winds were west-to-east. Of course, that still leaves the stuff coming into Maryland from Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

We had some widely scattered snow flakes very, very early this morning but no
real snow. About once every two to four years we have a good snowfall. It lasts
for a day and then it’s gone. Fine with me since my thermostat was set in AZ and
South Texas.
Snow. Blech. You can have it, Michelle. For me it lost its appeal when it stopped being an excuse to miss school and I started having to drive on it to get to work.
That, and having been in three car accidents on snow/ice – including totaling my beloved 1978 Trans Am into a concrete freeway divider (as well as several narrowly avoided accidents) made me a Worshipper of the Sun for the rest of my days.
O.K. so let it snow for awhile then collect the snow for the kids! sheesh, It’s like running the faucet for a second before drinking.
#39 Excellent points. There are numerous industrial manufacturing facilities plus hundreds of coal-fired power plants West of NJ. God only knows the snow must have a very metallic look (shiny white snow from all the Chrome-stainless steel making in Pittsburgh) and taste. As a former Pennsylvanian, my apologies to the Eastern shore.

We got a good storm here Monday (no work, hooray!). I’ve been looking out my windows at a similar sight at home and work all week now.
Snowy weather is one of the few reasons that I put up with living in the most liberal state in the Union, Taxachusetts.
We had a about 3″ of global warming here last night. Here in the Midwest we call it snow ice cream and yes it is yummy. some one mentioned snow cones you can do that to after the snow has set for a night or so. just use kool-aid for flavoring or fruit juice but it need’s to be ice cold.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful winter scene outside your window. We could use a new coat in the wilds of Idaho too, but the surrounding mountains are also beautiful loaded with a heavy blanket of snow and I hear the skiing is great. With the husky in the backyard I don’t think we will be trying the recipe (at least from the snow out back).

We’ve had a couple feet so far here, and it’s already melted away. Maybe more on Saturday.(April our biggest snow month).
It’s kinda quaint hearing others appreciate the snow and it’s beauty tho.

Yeah, we used to wait until at least the 2nd snowfall of the year to let the first snowfall clean most of the crap out of the air. Of course we haven’t had snow in 4 years here in NC.

Lovely white fluffy stuff down here in Woodbridge, at least till it was time to walk the dog- THEN it rained, bleh. Short walk. I hope it doesn’t freeze up tonight, hubby doesnt get home till 12…and I suspect my very pregnant daughter has started back labor!

long phone call with them. Granddog always go bonkers when she hears my voice
because she and her litter mates spent part of their first few weeks here when a
friend asked if I would keep them and mom for a week….after I got them weaned
and found homes for most, she gave one to them for a wedding present. I kept
one to go with the girl I had already. He said that it had snowed and then changed
to rain.
Hey, Michelle, beautiful scene. Here’s an idea to balance the pressures of politics: why not invite everyone to e-mail a snapshot of their own snowy scenes from their property? Being in Vermont we here may have an unfair advantage, but such views certainly are good for the soul, and provides a momentary respite from the misery that is dealing with liberals and the MSM.

Have to correct you. It was Xmas eve of 2004. As my memory fades I started writing dates on my pictures;maybe I missed a year? Nearby Victoria Tx. said was the first recorded snowfall in 100 years. It was a beaut. soft snow not the slushy kind.
For all of you who like snow and don’t have any, come and visit Colorado. This is the second straight year when we’ve had snow week, after week, after week. We haven’t melted down to the grass since November and still have at least a foot in the front. We had over 10 feet of snow last winter. And no, this isn’t in the mountains. They have even more.
It was -2 this morning and we’re ‘looking forward’ to another arctic blast tomorrow and then again on Sunday: Weather Report As they usually do, these storms leave us and head your way – enjoy. At least it’s not humid here.
However, this isn’t unusual. We have always had variable weather. I remember 70 degrees in Jan and having a tan by March while in college. I also remember driving a van for a hotel a couple of years later and picking people up at the airport when it was 20 below zero – usually the 3rd week of Jan. during the stock show.
As for dessert, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family poured maple syrup in the snow to make candy. Also yum. And as my daughter will say “God made dirt so dirt don’t hurt”. Eating it is better than breathing it.
Why is it we never hear from the global warming Chicken Littles when things like this happen?
JoAnn, I work around Woodbridge, but live in Annandale. Commute wasn’t bad going home, mostly rain by then. Going to drive to Va. Beach for the weekend. At least there it is nothing but rain. I miss the skiing in Vermont (mom&dad) sometimes. Up there, after a snowfall, one could walk outside the house and hear absolute silence. Only occasionally, one could hear a twig break, off in the distance. It was great…compared to the constant noise around the D.C. area. The moonlight would reflect off of the new snow and light up the area. Made one appreciate nature’s beauty in a snowfall. Here, in Virginia, I see only the mess it causes. There is a flip-side.
Back heah in N’Hampshah, we got plenty o snow. That Global Warmin gabbidge don’t work up heah, because the swelled heads of Patriots fans blot out the sun…
Having moved down from Damascus, MD, to Jacksonville, FL, I am grateful that someone else is enjoying the effects of global cooling. I much prefer the warmer weather.
For those of you who may be jealous, I will rub it in just a little bit. No jacket this morning, short-sleeve shirt, may even need to put on the A/C.
When you have to shovel your driveway 3 times in 8 hours so that you can go to work and drive a 12 hour shift in the snow, it ceases to be pretty.
When you pull person after person out of wrecked cars during that 12 hour shift, it ceases to be fun.
Don’t miss it at all.
Here in Oklahoma we get snow, but it doesn’t last very long. When we still lived in the country I enjoyed taking my children out walking and playing in it. I also enjoyed pointing out the animal tracks in it.
I enjoy snow for a little while, but by now I’m dreaming of the sun and riding my Harley-Davidson.
Mr_Conservative, I have heard global warming nuts say ( and this is the absolute
truth) that it is so cold because of global warming. When I point out that the key
word is warming, I am told that what g warming does is cool the atmosphere when it should be warm and warm the atmosphere when it should be
cool. As Michael Crichton says, no matter what happens, they will always
twist the argument to fit their hypothesis. You can’t win with these nuts.

I think I would wait for the 2nd good snow of the year.
Living in San Jose, it’s been 30’s to about 60 during the day (after the whale of a storm that blew thru the other week). DO I DARE SAY I AM TIRED OF SCRAPING MY WINDSHIELD IN THE MORNING??? I do remember one February we
had 80 degrees. I shouldn’t think we will this year. Funny, there is no more talk of the drought in the SF Bay Area

Looks like I’ll finally get to try this. Of course, since I can’t eat an entire quart of ice cream at a sitting (I would have multiple times this weekend had I been able to), I’ll have to find out the proper reduction ratio for a single pint-sized serving.
The mixing bowl is out there collecting the slowly-falling snow now; we’re supposed to end up with 4-6 inches by the time it ends late tonight.
