Hugo Chavez is a coca-head

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 20, 2008 05:50 PM

Have you ever listened to Hugo Chavez and thought to yourself: “That thug must be on something?”

Well, you were right. Via the Miami Herald (hat tip - reader Craig) comes Chavez’s admission that he chews coca–you know, that same stuff that gets refined into cocaine:

Venezuela’s controversial President Hugo Chávez has revealed that he regularly consumes coca — the source of cocaine — raising questions about the legality of his actions.

Chávez’s comments on coca initially went almost unnoticed, coming amid a four-hour speech to the National Assembly during which he made international headlines by calling on other countries to stop branding two leftist Colombian guerrilla groups as terrorists and instead recognize them as “armies.”

”I chew coca every day in the morning . . . and look how I am,” he is seen saying on a video of the speech, as he shows his biceps to the audience.

Chávez, who does not drink alcohol, added that just as Fidel Castro ‘’sends me Coppelia ice cream and a lot of other things that regularly reach me from Havana,” Bolivian President Evo Morales “sends me coca paste . . . I recommend it to you.”

It was not clear what Chávez meant. Indigenous Bolivians and Peruvians can legally chew coca leaves as a mild stimulant and to kill hunger. But coca paste is a semi-refined product — between leaves and cocaine — considered highly addictive and often smoked as basuco or pitillo.

”It is another symptom that [Chávez] has totally lost the concept of limits,” said Aníbal Romero, a political scientist with the Caracas Metropolitan University. “It shows Chávez is a man out of control.”

He is out of control because he is insane. The coca just makes him repeat himself.

The one terrible thing that President Reagan did to this country was to issue an executive order that forbids the assignation of foreign heads of state.

There’s no reason for people to go without heat.

How about if they spend their budget on less important things?

No matter what the source, making sure Americans have heat should be the higher priority.

Yeah, tell that one to your “Massachusetts delegation.” Fair minded Americans have been trying to tap “sources” from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska for decades now, but delegations of “concerned” democrats (like those from Massachusetts) have blocked these “sources” every time.

And let’s be honest. We’d rather it be Venezuela than Saudi Arabia? Right?

Speak for yourself. I’m familiar with many poor Venezuelans (who incidentally, make the poorest Beantowners look like the Kennedys)who still haven’t seen one centavo of promised aid from Chavez since 1999. Still proud that your State is taking Venezuelan aid from out of the mouths and off the backs of some of Venezuela’s most destitute citizens? What’s Joe Kennedy’s vig on that kind of sweet action?

Not quite, but you don’t get high chewing coca leaves. It’s quite common in the Andean areas of Peru and Bolivia and is used to dull the senses (e.g. hinder hunger, sustain long working hours). Given the nature of Chavez one would have a hard time determining if he chews coca because he’s an idiot or if he’s an idiot because of chewing coca (I’m sure it’s the former).

There is a completely legal method for using coca leaves in the Andean countries that has a quicker and stronger effect than chewing leaves: mate de coca (coca tea). It’s mainly used to prevent altitude sickness. I even sent a box of “tea” bags to my son when he was in Afghanistan.

Good response to Rusty, especially the last part. All of those people who support Chavez giving money to Cuba, other like-minded politicians in Latin American, for Russian weapons, and the people of Massachusetts always seem to forget that every dollar he gives away he’s taking from Venezuelan poor, those unfortunate souls that he allegedly represents.

My question continues to be: If we have the resources in our own country (natural gas, crude oil, and even nuclear power could all provide energy for heat), why not remove the artifical barriers we have placed on tapping these resources, and provide for ourselves?

From what I understand, 1) Liberals don’t mind high gas prices, they just don’t want Americans making too much money off of the situation, and 2) Liberals, especially from Massachusetts, seem to place the priorities of Alaskan caribou over those of poor Americans who “can’t afford” heating oil.

Mark Bowden also wrote “Black Hawk Down” in that book he described how the Somalians would chew khat. Chavez chews coco leaves, I see a pattern forming.
