MLK’s legacy: Open borders?!

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 21, 2008 08:52 AM

In Birmingham, Alabama, today’s official Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday will be about…open borders (hat tip – reader Stephen):

The keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast on Monday is a Kansas native and the daughter of Mexican immigrants.

Organizers said they chose Janet Murguia, the president and chief executive officer of the National Council of La Raza, because of her message of unity and her opposition to a resurgence of hate speech in the immigration debate.

It’s the first time in more than two decades that the keynote speaker for the Birmingham event is not a white person or a black person.

Isabel Rubio, executive director of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, an affiliate of La Raza, said having Murguia on the program signals a recognition of the growing population of Spanish-speaking people in Alabama and a continuation of King’s dream.

Murguia said she intends to speak about common challenges and opportunities for blacks and Hispanics.

“We recognize that the immigration system is broken and it requires a serious debate,” she said, “but there’s no room in that debate for hate, and we’re sensing a wave of hate right now that’s not only directed at immigrants, but the Hispanic community.”

We’ve gone from King’s dream of a color-blind society to lobbying by a group called “The Race” for DREAM Act benefits for illegal aliens, amnesty for illegal aliens, driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, and separatist schools for Hispanics.

This is progress?

This is usually where they hurt their cause. US citizens don’t take kindly to being told that we are racist because we want our borders closed and the laws enforced. There are plenty of Hispanics who want our laws enforced as well. if you are against amnesty your racist. Yeah, that’s going to help your cause.

    What do they expect?

They come to America and expect us to turn our country – its laws, its culture, its system of benefits (Social Security, college grants/scholarships) – on its ear to benefit them.

Then they accuse us of being racist, bigoted, and hateful for requiring them to follow the law that countless LEGAL immigrants took the time to follow.

Can’t they see how their actions can rightfully be interpreted as insulting? They’re essentially saying, “We don’t give a damn about you, your laws, your country or your culture…gimme, gimme, gimme.”

I’m beyond positive that anyone who opposes illegal immigration would have no problem with immigrants of any stripe coming here legally, according to our laws, to make a better life for themselves.

It’s not racist or bigoted to demand that anyone who wants citizenship show their dedication to their new country by following its laws pertaining to immigration.

Breaking those laws as your first action in your “new country” does not sit well.

It is not hate to be offended when someone breaks into your home. It is not hate when those coming into your country not only spurn assimilation, but mock and ridicule your values and systems. It is not hate when the burden on the social infrastructure increases the taxes of American citizens, closes hospitals and fills our jails with criminals. It is not hate when the actions of illegals cause death and lifelong trauma to the citizens of this country. And it is not hate to care enough about one’s country to take a stand against a situation that is slowly breaking it apart.

It is not hate. It is a desire for JUSTICE. It is the exercise of one’s right to protect their homes. It is recognition of the rule of law.

Those concepts may be foreign in countries like Mexico, but they are basic tenants of life in the US. Countries like Mexico that abhor immigration and discriminate against immigrants by their laws and practices. Want to run a business in Mexico? You are required to employ Mexican citizens as managers. Want to own property in Mexico? You can’t do it as a foreigner unless you put the deed in trust with a Mexican trustee. And even if you become a Mexican citizen, you will never be able to hold elected office because you are not a citizen by birth. Sounds more than a little like life under Islamic rule than life under a democracy.

Yes, there is hate associated with the issue of illegal immigration. But the hate is not generated by US citizens – the hate is borne by citizens of countries like Mexico. Groups like “The Race” that believe they are superior to the hodgepodge of other races that have melted together successfully in the US.

Keep your hated and racism South of the Border. And while you’re at it, take your citizens with you.

Translation: We recognize that you want to talk about our positions on amnesty. But, we have no ability to debate, and we have no logic behind our position other than “We want what we want, and we want you to pay for it”.

Therefore, we will use hyperbole, call you a racist, and back you in a position of defending yourself. Then all we have to debate is you being a racist, without any proof herein.

Illegal immigration is not about race. It is about one person deciding they are above the laws imposed on 300 million persons. It is about one person who so hates a country, that they join with other like minded individuals to tear it down from within. It is about greed, and laziness, and the impotence of that individual to do what is right in their home nation, so they would rather take the easy way and continue to feed the corruption they choose to “escape”. It is about the tacit approval and encouragement by these indivduals to the leaders in their home countries to continue the rape, abuse, murder, and theft of their own national heritage.

These men and women allow their governments to steal from them, to rape their sisters, to kill their brothers, and yet they still send home money that will be taken to commit more of these atrocities. Yet, when we Americans step in to aid them, our own Left calls us murderous bastards! How do you help a people build their lives when you have to fight their enemies on their front, and you own self-hating enemies right at home?

How do you keep a country free, when half of the country is working so hard to remove our ability to protect and defend those freedoms both locally and throughout the world?

I see this as more proof of the differences between races/cultures but I have heard that there is no difference between us all so I’m confused/not.

That is beyond insulting to me, I do not behave like these ingrates do when I visit other countries, enough with lumping us in with these people. I have seen firsthand who the real racists are so la raza doesn’t fool me. I have taken action, if a Mexican comes to my door looking for work, an almost everyday occurrence, I tell them straight up, no. I don’t appreciate what I am hearing coming out of parts of your community. I will do the work myself or allow it to go undone before I hand over my money and my countries future to the likes of that. I am sick of being called racist because of other peoples failures albeit here or anywhere else and don’t forget to tell your boss exactly what I just said.

My parents taught me to take responsibility for my own actions, many of these people have been taught just the opposite, another on the long list of conflicting values. When America is loaded with citizens who when the going gets tough at home they start fleeing, well, I don’t have to tell you that these people would never have fought for the Revolution, the Civil War or WWII. The 21st century minutemen, it only takes a minute for them to pick up their belongings and beat a hasty retreat. It is sad that because of the actions of some, others will lose an avenue that could have helped to lift them up out of the dirt. The Mexican community, those who really call themselves Americans need to put these people in their place, and that place is back home where the policies better represent their values.

Don’t try to smear me as racist both of my immediate neighbors are Americans of Mexican heritage and they are a lot angrier than I am. I find myself in the uncomfortable position of being a moderator, they are pissed and I’m not sure how long I can hold them back. That’s what I get, not being a racist and all.

    ROSALIA
    Puerto Rico,
    You lovely island . . .
    Island of tropical breezes.
    Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing . . .

    ANITA
    Puerto Rico . . .
    You ugly island . . .
    Island of tropic diseases.
    Always the hurricanes blowing,
    Always the population growing . . .
    And the money owing,
    And the babies crying,
    And the bullets flying.
    I like the island Manhattan.
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

I like to be in America!
    O.K. by me in America!
    Ev’rything free in America
For a small fee in America!

I like the city of San Juan.

    ANITA
I know a boat you can get on.

    ROSALIA
Hundreds of flowers in full bloom.

    ANITA
Hundreds of people in each room!

    ALL
    Automobile in America,
    Chromium steel in America,
    Wire-spoke wheel in America,
    Very big deal in America!

    ROSALIA
I’ll drive a Buick through San Juan.

    ANITA
If there’s a road you can drive on.

    ROSALIA
I’ll give my cousins a free ride.

    ANITA
How you get all of them inside?

    ALL
    Immigrant goes to America,
    Many hellos in America;
    Nobody knows in America
    Puerto Rico’s in America!

    ROSALIA
    I’ll bring a T.V. to San Juan.

    ANITA
If there a current to turn on!

    ROSALIA
I’ll give them new washing machine.

    ANITA
What have they got there to keep clean?

    ALL
I like the shores of America!
    Comfort is yours in America!
Knobs on the doors in America,
    Wall-to-wall floors in America!

    ROSALIA

What is wrong with hate? I hate to floss. I hate to eat sauerkraut. Hate is a natural feeling, an intense aversion to something.

I hate the fact that La Raza can even function in this country, espousing an Hispanic take over of the USA. I hate the fact that illegals swarm across the border daily, intending to destroy our society with their selfish personal agenda.

Hate, originating from the lack of enforcement of our immigration laws, will end when justice for the American citizen becomes the high priority it should be. Our laws are being ignored, not just by the illegal aliens, but by our own Federal and State authorities who, I thought took an oath when they were hired, to support the constitution and the laws of the land. They aren’t doing their jobs. I hate it when that happens.

As with all good lies, there’s more than a little truth in it.

It is true that hate has seeped into this, and that there really is no need for it.

Because this is true, they want to fashion it as the cornerstone of “the debate,” and therein lies the problem. It is a red herring.

The debate is simple, and the Minutemen and their supporters have been calling for it: for a nation to be sovereign, it must be secure in its own borders.

That is the issue to debate. It is the only issue, in fact.

And it is the one issue that “La Raza” is afraid of.

The tragedy here isn’t La Raza’s exploting the situation. What do you expect from a pig, but a grunt? No, the tragedy comes from the people who claim to be standard bearers for MLK.

MLK didn’t serve in the military, but he was quick to point out that many African American’s *HAD,* and that they were *PATRIOTS* who deserved the same respect as everyone else.

I am open to correction here, but can anyone show me one instance where MLK called for open borders of any kind?

His dream was beautiful, but it was about a nation – not a geographical region that anyone can claim. Read the text of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech. It is very specific, and mentions a great many locations where injustice and despondency lie. He mentions, by name, places like Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, “Northern Cities,” Georgia, etc.

Dear God, have you ever heard, or even read, the closing of that speech? How he calls on God Almighty to let freedom ring in Pennsylvania, in New Hampshire, Colorado, California, etc.

He never mentions Mexico. He never mentions the Dominican Republic. He never mentions Colombia.

These people shouldn’t be ashamed of themselves; they should be jailed for fraud.

What a horrible miscarriage of one of the most important messages of the 20th century.

The constant and deliberate interchage between “immigration” and “illegal immigration” has to stop. The MSM and politicians do it constantly, and it is confusing to those who do not follow the issue.

Obviously (to some), it is the dishonest attempt to make average people think that anti-illegal immigration folks are against all immigration, which is demonstrably false. It is a lie, and they should be called on it, be it a newspaper article or a debate or anywhere in between.

Why is it that only hispanics (the definition of which itself is suspect and confusing) require signs, announcements, owner’s manuals etc., etc., in Spanish rather than English? Is Spanish more removed from English than say, Chinese or Hindi? I think not.

What does this say about hispanics? What do hispanics think this says about them? Do they care?

The funniest thing (in a sad way) is that blacks have the most to lose from an influx of illegals, but the flying monkeys of the DNC tell them otherwise, or just let them think what they want.

Where is Sharpton and Jackson on the issue of this La Raza chick speaking at an MLK celebration? Have they sold out their own people (again)?

Back in Time, that should be the theme song of the left. The liberal ideology has peaked and now that we see candidates from their different sub-groups competing against each other none of them can ask the others any questions. They can’t afford to appear racist, sexist, or any other ist so they can’t discuss anything of any modern importance or relevance without craks appearing in their façade as we are seeing. That’s why we see them offering handouts in exchange for votes that is why we see them trying to revive 40 plus year old issues. Leftism truly is an ideology of fear they even fear each other and if they are too afraid to debate each other how in the world can they deal with foreign leaders, especially the most tolerant islamofascists? Handouts? The left has constructed an Animal Farm and on it they have embraced a 1984 ideology, a double plus ungood. I look for this house divided to crumble like a stale saltine cracker in the not too distant future. Some might describe it as…blowback.

America for Americans, no hyphen wanted or needed, my ancestors dropped the hyphenated American tag, well, centuries ago. If you are missing your homeland so bad that you need to bring it with you, stay home, you will in the long run be happier. Either you are an American or you are not, if you desire to be an American citizen there is no in between. So get with the program or go home and make that home better, anyone is free to leave, there is no wall.

The biggest offense I see is some companies that want to pay an hourly rate from 40 years ago for the same job today. They complain that they can’t find Americans to do the work in return for 1970s wages. Well no duh you cheap rip-offs! The greatest weapon an American citizen has against illegal immigration is their wallet, use it wisely.

“We recognize that the immigration system is broken and it requires a serious debate,” she said, “but there’s no room in that debate for hate, and we’re sensing a wave of hate right now that’s not only directed at immigrants, but the Hispanic community.”

The hate you feel is directed at lawbreaking and a willfull disregard for the Culture of America being assaulted by people who do not want to adapt, but want to force Americans to be UnAmerican by adapting to an outside force.

The hate that Hispanics feel is the hate of law abiding Americans that are sick and tired of illegals making demands for law abiding citizens to make changes to their lives, to provide services to illegals, and to simply allow illegals to pull every American’s lifestyle lower than it would be with-out illegal immigrants.

The hate that Hispanics feel is their own making, from their own mind, from their own failings. The hate is directed not at Hispanics, but it is directed at actions that many Hispanics have decided freely to act out. When there is no Illegal Immigration assault on America, do you think there will be anomosity towards Hispanics? I do not think so. 99% of all Americans are not racist xenophobics and the other 1% which might be are ostricized.

I for one am sick and tired of pressing 1 to make a phone call to my phone company. I for one am sick and tired of having to look for english directions in the manuals I buy. I for one am sick and tired of going to a resteraunt and not being able to talk to the jerk behind the counter that speaks broken english. Basically, I am sick and tired of having my English Language and my Culture assaulted by people who should not even be in this country, they are invaders, looters, pillagers and rapists. Drugs, gangs, and any number of other bad types of things come to America, along with the hard worker and the only way to get the chaff out is to force people to enter the country through a process that takes many months where our country verifies that people are who they say they are, that they are not criminals, and that they will not become a burden to our society. That is how my wife got here, through a visa, that took just shy of 1 full year to get. We did it the right way, and I demand that people who want to have the privilage of becoming United States Citizens follow a rigorous pathway that does not start by breaking the law.

This is obviously subjective because as a Rudy supporter I see the bias leaning in favor of Romney and McCain; most pundits on Fox have essentially written Rudy off unless he wins Florida, which doesn’t sound pro-Rudy to me.

The likely fact is we’re all passionate
and simply see the reactions of others to our chosen candidate through a very severe and uncompromising magnifying glass.

On topic: King had a terrific vision which as others have said has been perverted into a color-centric society instead of a color blind society. That’s tragic. On an un-PC notes, however, to this day it irks me a little to think that his birthday is a national Holiday while Washington and Lincoln, who faced gigantic challenges and met them squarely (and Lincoln, too, was assasinated), have been reduced to “President’s Day”. Somehow that makes Kind seem greater than those two who are only his equal when rolled together. Indeed, I think Reagan did more in actuality than did King (admittedly Reagan was lucky to live through his assasination attempt), but there’s no Reagan Day, either. I’d like to wind that thought up with a definiative conclusion, but, alas, there isn’t one, except perhaps that someday some porn-miester will make a form of porn that’s truly educational and call it “Politically Correct Gone Wild.”

What is scary, is that when you give a group like that legitimacy, and they espouse extreme ideas, then those ideas began to take on legitimacy in some people’s minds. Not many people would take you seriously (I hope) if you were to brazenly call for something that extreme; but when you shield yourself under the umbrella of being a “civil rights group,” it is assumed(again by some who might not know otherwise) that you are merely trying to protect the Hispanic population from racism.
