Anti-tax protesters stifled in NJ
Anti-tax activists in NJ were arrested last week for handing out flyers outside a town hall meeting convened by Democrat Gov. Jon Corzine. The Jersey Nut sends video:
After an outcry, local officials are now asking for the charges to be dropped:
The Middle Township prosecutor says she’ll ask a municipal court judge to drop trespassing charges against two men protesting a meeting on Corzine’s toll increase plan.
Township officials had been asking Mary D’Arcy Bittner to drop the charges against former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan and radio personality Seth Grossman. The two were arrested Jan. 19 after handing out fliers and holding signs outside a Middle Township school where Governor Corzine was discussing plans to increase highway tolls. Corzine wants to use toll increases to pay off state debt and fund transportation projects. Bittner plans to ask for a dismissal of charges on Monday.
Corzine denies a role in the dissent-crushing:
Gov. Jon Corzine insisted…his office had nothing to do with the arrest of conservative activist Steve Lonegan at a town hall meeting in Cape May County, even though the mayor of Middle Township said local police acted at the direction of the governor’s staff.
“All I know is they were doing what they were told to do,” Mayor F. Nathan Doughty said. Asked who had told them what to do, he said, “The governor’s people.”

Corzine is a tried-and-true liberal: He’s for it as long as it’s in-line with his liberal policies.
He the only schnauzer elected to office since David Bonior.
Please don’t tax me bro!
A great glimpse into the future of conservatives if a liberal wins in November. Non-violent pro-life protestors and anti-tax protestors have been arrested. Who’s next? Anyone and everyone who disagrees with liberal policies.
Welcome to 1984…
The elitist zillionaire Corzine, who literally purchased his seat in the US Senate does what democaps do best, lie.
I can hear it now.. the “little people” protesting a toll increase??? How dare they. Throw them in jail…
Scratch a liberal, find a fascist.
New Jersey no longer allows the 1st Amendment? I guess freedom of speech only applies when your speech reflects that of your political overlords back east. As much as I feel like a loony for saying this folks is sounds like it is time to start arming up people. What other freedoms will they take away from us with no outcry?
EQ, there have been many instances of liberals being arrested for peaceful dissent. Heck, in DC even people observing protests get arrested.
This is a troublesome event. But the stifling of dissent, unfortunately, crosses party lines.
I know you are but what am I? For god’s sake, who elects id10t’s there?
Trespassing on public property? It was considered “trespassing” because they disagreed with Corzine’s proposal? And here I thought “dissent” was patriotic!
If only the British had cracked down this hard on those dastardly rebels who participated in the Boston Tea Party, we would have English as our official language today.
Rusty is lying as usual. Arrested leftists were doing illegal things like lying across railroad tracks or blocking a road. How intellectually dishonest can he get?
(Does John McCain have a son named Rusty?)
Please don’t call me a liar. Did you click the link I provided? Observers as well as peaceful protesters were arrested and the city had to spend over half a million dollars to pay for all the settled lawsuits.
Since this happened at Pershing Park, 3 blocks from my office, I hope you’ll trust me when I tell you there are no railroad tracks anywhere near 15th and Pennsylvania. As for blocking roads, it’s a park. Nothing to block.
So, Al, bite your tongue and think before you call me a liar. Here’s the link again. Please read it. 400 people were arrested on park grounds with no warning. 400 liberals.
These arrests happen. There’s no excuse for it. I hope anyone arrested without cause gets a nice fat settlement from the state or city.
Maybe, but how about all the violent anti-war protesters up in Olympia, WA that weren’t? How about that woman who dropped her toddler on the pavement? Where’s the outrage?
Rusty, where were you when Medea Benjamin threatened Secretary of State Condoleza Rice in a Congressional Committee hearing? She got escorted out, but not arrested. No member of Rice’s staff ordered the police to arrest her.
The problem here is that the governor is, in effect, ordering free speech to be stifled. Do you, Rusty, want any government to do that, regardless of their political persuasion? I sure hope not.
No. It’s the opposite. I don’t want it to ever happen regardless of political persuasion. Arresting peaceful protesters is inexcusable. I was just responding to the comments that this is a liberal problem. It’s a problem in both parties.
Interesting that the D.C. Police Chief, at the time, was Charles H. Ramsey, who has a history of violating civil rights…more interesting because he was formerly an adjuct professor at Northwestern, a liberal democrat, and yes, also black.
It seems, as usual, that it is the liberals who have problems understanding constitutional rights, not conservatives. That’s one reason we allow trolls to…well, troll.
Welcome to Liberal Utopia:
This is where protesting taxes will get you arrested but destroying government property while protesting the military is considered an idealized example of exercising free speech.
This is where putting a leash on your pet violates animal rights but putting a leash on your partner makes you qualified to lead the parade.
This is where eating meat, wearing fur, or doing animal testing makes you a murderer but aborting your child or using a pregnancy to harvest stem cells or even organs is a compassionate use of science.
When I hear liberals praising leaders like Hugo and Fidel, I can think of no greater hell than to allow them to design their own Utopia and then require them to actually live in it, not as a visiting VIP but as an ordinary citizen.
I am waiting for the headline of anti-tax, non-tax paying for years, Cindy Sheehan to be arrested for not paying her taxes. She brags about not paying. Some tax evaders go to jail; Cindy gets a pass.
I’m a bit confused, here. Were they on public property or private? The cop is talking like they were on private property. He asks them to go into the building or go over to public property. I’m not exactly sure where the issue is.
you think laws actually matter to politicians in NJ.
ha.
you’re funny.
PapaLouie, they did crack down-big time-on the Boston Tea Party; the “Intolerable Acts”, which was a big mistake that Parliament made, unifying the colonies. LOL. One reason why I would make a bad governor, these days, is because I would first say,”What can we do to save money for this state?”, rather than, “We need money. Let’s raise taxes.”
sounds to me like Corzine is saying, in effect, `Let them eat cake.’ If both sides of the political spectrum have arrested people, I believe in these days, there are more of those of Liberal persuasion that use such tactics to silence free speech in the name of, oh I don’t know, some animals are more equal than others. Especially those that agree with raising taxes. Funny how quickly those that disagree are ostracized: Global Warning? Holocast
Denier! Anti-S-CHIP? Obviously not “FOR”
children or healthcare. National Socialist?? Yes, Progressive Liberals are.
I just met a couple who moved out of New Jersey, because they said it’s turning into a communist state. They hated what it has become and they were born and raised there. Elected officials ignore what the people want, just like in Russia.
and just why are local police supposed to take orders from the governor’s flunkies?
The arrest was a violation of the 1st and 10th Amendments. The move to “dismiss” the charges are violations of the 5th and 6th Amendments. To arrest a man who is simply demonstrating to redress his grievences is New Jersey’s way of usurping the Constitutional powers. To deny the man a day in court prevents speedy trial and trial by a jury of his peers. There could even be a violation of the 7th Amendment, but he could still proceed to civil trial with just the film here.
But then again, I believe that the last remaining shreds of the US Constitution died under Bill Clinton.

Short memory? That sh*t has been going on for years, the fascist goon-squads thumping the skulls of people who fall on the wrong side of the politically correct thought police.
See here,

Thank you, thank you, thank you Michelle for bringing this story to the national stage.
I’ve lived in NJ for 50 years and it is a corrupt, liberal communist state that is an a death spiral. We are bankrupt, drowning in excess high salaried public(government) employees. We have the highest taxes and insurance rates in the country and Corzine proposes raising road tolls by some 800% over 14 years….We are 14 billion in debt and he proposes borrowing 40 billion to pay it off and continue to operate the state.
He has this Republican mayor(Lonegan) assested outside a public town meeting that was called to discuss his proposals….They are supposed to have 21 of these meetings over the year but I hear you have register in advance in order to get in. You can’t just show up and get in…. We are becoming Trenton, NJ, USSR.
Sorry for the spelling, was hyperventilating as I wrote.
but if these were anti-war people, it would be seditious, right?
No, it wouldn’t be seditious. Corzine would have gone out and given an “anti-war” speech. We have a “living, breathing” Constitution now. It “breathes out” the amendments to suit the government, and “breathes them back in” when it suits them.
I grew up in Jersey and bailed at age 18 (thanks, Uncle Sam!). As such, I feel for all youse good Joizy people.
But friends, it’s time to pop smoke and get the heck out of Dodge. Head south!
Sounds like it is time impeach Corzine.
