The moonbats are upping the ante and pouring gallons of fresh fuel on their anti-military fire in Berkeley. Following on the heels of the Berkeley City Council’s move to grant them special parking privileges and free sound permits to protest the Marine recruiting center, Code Pinkos held a mock debate at the recruitment office. Medea Benjamin gloated (via Daily Cal):
A local activist group drew a crowd of 50 onlookers yesterday when they staged a mock debate against a military recruiting office in Downtown Berkeley.
Although conservative radio talk show host Melanie Morgan was originally scheduled to participate, she was ultimately replaced by a member of activist group Code Pink pretending to espouse conservative views.
Issues ranged from the congressional race between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan to the military presence in Berkeley.
“We are the defenders of democracy, the upholders of the Constitution,” said Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink. “If it weren’t for people like the people in Berkeley, standing up for what they believe, we’d be living under Hitler.”
A few e-mailers wonder if a pro-life group should apply for parking privileges and free sound permits in order to protest outside one of Berkeley’s abortion clinics.
Anyone up for a constitutional challenge? Maybe it’s time for some public interest law firms to join the American Legion and Sen. DeMint in the growing backlash.
One Berkeley City Councilwoman now says she’s “ashamed” of her vote. Idiot:
The vote to award the Code Pink parking spot was 8-1, and the condemnation resolution was 6-3. On Thursday, the polarized emotions that went into those votes had not abated.
“I’m ashamed of my vote,” said Councilwoman Betty Olds, who helped approve the parking spot but not the condemnation. “The protesters should have free speech – this is where Free Speech was born, after all – but to tell the Marines they are not welcome is shameful. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t even go for the parking spot.”
The Berkeley Daily Planet reports on the one dissenter who voted against awarding the parking spot to Code Pink:
The question of dedicating space—a parking space—for Code Pink’s weekly demonstrations in front of the downtown Berkeley Marine Recruiting Center (MRC) raised hackles at Tuesday night’s Berkeley City Council meeting, when Councilmember Gordon Wozniak likened the demonstrations there to protests at abortion clinics.
“There’s a line between protesting and harassing,” Wozniak said, referring to possible harassment of recruits.
Wozniak was the lone vote in opposition to a resolution authored by Councilmembers Linda Maio and Max Anderson designating a parking space in front of the recruiting center for the demonstrators from noon to 4 p.m. every Wednesday for six months.
The dedicated parking space “is showing favoritism to one side of the argument,” Wozniak said, adding, “My concern is giving a parking space in front of the Marine Recruiting Center seems confrontational.”
While Dori Schmidt, whose husband owns The Berkeley Review, a test preparation business above the MRC, told the council that the demonstrations disrupt the business with their noise, other public speakers supported the parking space designation.
“It’s not favoritism,” said PhoeBe Sorgen, a member of Code Pink and the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists Social Justice Committee. Rather, it’s following the Berkeley “tradition to stand up for peace,” she said.

The debate follows Tuesday’s City Council decision to grant Code Pink a parking spot in front of the military recruitment center on Shattuck Avenue, facilitating the ongoing protests. Another resolution passed by the City Council directed the city manager to send a letter to the U.S. Marine Corps informing them that they are “uninvited and unwelcome intruders” in Berkeley. PhoeBe sorgen, a Code Pink activist and member of the city’s Peace and Justice Commission, said the resolutions were supportive of the group’s continued resistance and showed the city was taking an official stand against the center. Code Pink has staged protests against the center on Shattuck every Wednesday since Sept. 26.
At the debate, local activists and Code Pink members also promoted a proposed initiative for the November elections that would require the center to obtain a special use permit to remain in Berkeley. Yesterday’s debate was only one of many steps to remove the recruitment center from Berkeley, Joi said. “We’ll be here as long as they’re here,” she said.

I am a recruiter in the GA Army National Guard. I just read your story on Berkeley and am at a loss for words. As a successful recruiter in Athens, GA, I want to tell you thanks for exposing this horrible city, and that although it seems to be a disease spreading throughout the country, I have had positive experiences in my area. In fact, most of my soldiers have come through the high schools that I recruit for. Hopefully some of the “big brass” will do the right thing and cut federal funds to the city. Again thanks and keep up the good work.

You know we insisted that Iraq de-bathitize their government, why can’t we do the same for our country via socialist?
The delusion is strong with this one.
If it weren’t for the US Armed Forces, Berkeleyites would be speaking German, and Code Pink would be non-existant.
That is going to be news to the Founding Fathers.
I sent an email last night telling them that they disgust me and they make me want to vomit. I also told them that my Dad served in Vietnam. he is probably rolling over in his grave right about now seeing this happen out there in Pinky land.
After reading about this last night. I proudly sent them my e-mail. Titled it “your patriotism is in question”.
Every one on the list of provided recieved my email.
I whole heartedly support the withdrawl of all FEDERAL AID to this ridiculous farce that Berekly has become. I am contacting Tom Tancredo about this and asking him what he plans to do about this.
I for one am calling for not only federal aid be stopped but a boycott of the city its self. In todays world one can no longer just take morons to the wood shed. You have to go after what hurts them the most. Despite their communistic ways , at heart they are hard core capitalist and if they loose money then they open their eyes.
I think we should apply for a parade permit on the upcoming 4th. Invite all military past and present, get a fly over from either the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angles. Show these self serving, attention begging, spoiled bratts that America LOVES ITS MILITARY.

When the city is under siege and the police and fire departments are overwhelmed, the Governor can remind them of this vote when they beg for help from the National Guard.

Would you condemn the innocent for the actions of a few immature children? That’s what they are – immature children, playing dress-up and trying to call attention to themselves.
There are many quiet, law-abiding citizens of Berkeley, and for that matter, the Bay Area and all of California who completely disagree with these morons who pretend to be leaders. Unfortunately, over the years, they’ve gotten so used to the outrageous statements and actions of their elected leaders that they tend to ignore them.
Please, folks – it’s hard enough to listen to the drivel coming from these people without stooping to their level. Send them an e-mail, call them, let it be known that you disapprove of their actions, yes. But be something they aren’t – civil and polite. Don’t get into name calling with them, or use profanity or other kinds of sick abuse you’d expect from them.
My sense is that most of them have never been outside their own city, or at the most, CONUS, and have never set foot in a country where this kind of action is not only unwelcome, but punishable by imprisonment or even death. Traitors they may well be(and I have to be very careful of what I say on this subject, lest I be banned from MM for my opinion) but they are nevertheless entitled to their freedom of speech, regardless of whether or not they allow me the same courtesy. I spent the majority of my adult life to ensure they have that right, as I’m sure many others on this site, and other sites have.
Remember that you are talking about human beings here – when you call down earthquakes on them, there will be significant “collateral damage.”
Yes, by all means, withhold Federal funds, and even State funds from the city, but remember this: if a disaster does happen, we are obligated to do whatever is within our power to help.
When duty calls, we must answer. It’s part of our make-up. Condemn the leaders and moonbats to your hearts’ content, but please – confine your wrath to them.
I suggest one of these idiots actually READ the Constitution they claim to uphold – they’ll find THEY are the Nazis denying others their Constitutional rights. It’s a very sad state of affairs that so many people have no grasp of our country’s history and appreciation for what our military has and continues to provide for us. I think this battle in Berkeley is one the entire country has to fight and participate in. Enough is enough. We will never allow our military to be treated as it was in the 60’s again. We need to get organized. What should those of us who live outside of California do other than email our senators? If donations to a group who is going to fight these monsters will help, just tell me where to send the money.

What makes me sick, is that if the City of Berkeley was attacked, it would be those same Marines that they are protesting, that would without question stand between the Berkeley City Council members and their attackers and defend them to the death.
And the City Council would whine that they didn’t do their jobs well enough.

They rubber stamped and validated the Code Pinkos abilities to trample on the rights of others. The last time I checked enlisting the US Armed Forces was a totally and completely voluntary act. CP thinks they are protecting potential enlistees from harm by stepping on their right to serve their country. Amazing. They somehow know what you want for your life better than you do.
This isn’t about the war, Bush or Republicans, though, they make sure they mention it everytime they open their mouths. This is about the freedom of others to live their lives as they see fit. But of course, liberals aren’t able to recognize this if it isn’t about abortion and sex.

This is the most hilariously ridicuous statement I believe I’ve ever heard from these witless goons. Our freedom of speech and assembly had NOTHING to do with saving us from Hitler’s dream of World domination–that was accomplished by heading off forces bent upon enslaving humanity with STRONGER forces that eventually forced the Nazis to recant and submit.
It was brave and noble young men with heart, guts, and the equipment and tools necessary to fight with that saved
the World from Hitler’s evil. Code Pink’s agenda gives all the appearance that they’re regretful for the efforts of those military efforts.
As Mrs. Malkin pointed out here, she has family in the area. Tactical nukes and 8.0 earthquakes will affect them just as much as The Pinkos. (I do like the idea of a load of manure.) So please refrain from that kind of widespread retribution. Maybe a large dark cloud raining heavily whilst the Pinkos are protesting would be more likable (esp. if they haven’t had a bath in a while), with lots of lightening too!
I certainly understand the sentiment though. I would like nothing better than to steamroll them out of the way. Of course my Free Speech rights wouldn’t matter if they thought I was trying to stifle theirs. Cough, Cough!!
I’m wondering how long it’s going to take before we have a President who has the balls to tell cities like this that the military will no longer protect them.
The President should hold a prime time press conference, and tell the world that cities like this are no longer under the protection of the Federal government. They’re on their own. Let them have exactly what they want. No military. No guns. No federal government of ANY kind. They’re 100% on their own. See how long THAT lasts before they understand how wrong their views really are.

I could just see Code Pink in WW2…marching down Penn. Avenue flying nazi and Japanese flags. LOL. They would have speeches demanding US withdrawal from Africa and Italy, plus the Solomons and Australia. Code Pinker Jane Fonda would be on her way (somehow) to Tokyo…to visit POWs. Cindy Sheehan, Sean Penn, and others would be “consulting” with the Vichy government. Plus, harboring draft dodgers too. That’s the real picture, Ms. Benjamin. That’s what you really are.
After nearly six years of bellyaching about the war in Iraq, after raising and spending tens of thousands of dollars on protests and media air-time to air their grievances over the war, after traveling thousands of miles to march on Washington, DC and speak with our representatives on pulling out of Iraq, after all the mass mailings and tearful pleas with the public to help end the war, after having invested all this time and effort – a lousy parking spot in Berkeley is all they have to show for it.

You’ve got it wrong about the book. The author was simply making the point that facism is not a right wing ideology. It’s actually a left wing ideology. That is fact.
As far as calling President Bush “hitler”, I dont’t really care if you call him hitler or peter pan, but don’t pretend to be offended when we question your patriotism when you do the sorts of treasonous things that code pink is doing.

One would think, given Berkeley’s politics, that the Marine recruiter would be as lonely as the Maytag repairman, even without offensive demonstrations. Given the need for cost effectiveness in government, let him relocate outside the city limits where the prospects of success would be greater. Just my humble opinion.

cpodug – I grew up in Southern California, rode out the 7.2 Sylmar quake as a teen, observed what the 7.0 World Series quake, etc. I have a pretty fair idea of what an 8 pointer would do (note to others, the Richter Scale is logrithmic, so an 8 is ten times worse than a 7, and a hundred times worse than a 6, etc.). I do not wish harm on the law abiding normal people (which is an assumption I hold lightly) of San Francisco, but I view them as silent co-conspirators in this entire mess because they are the ones who elect and re-elect the idiots we read about so often. As for the refusal to provide post-disaster federal relief, I’m simply not willing to provide it until they (the supposed normal people of the SF area) act responsibly and elect a responsible group of local officials.

As one examines the political spectrum in our country, when moving to the left you get more government, to the right, less.
Hitler was about more government. All socialists and genuine fascists are, because more control is required to enforce socialism and fascism on a population.

This is absolutely correct. Be it Fascist Socialism or Nazi Socialism, or Soviet Bolshivik Socialism, it all stems from the same social and fiscal ideolgy. They all want an all-powerful centralized government that regulates every aspect of the lives of its citizens.
The main differences are that the Nazis’ focus was nationalistic, and the Bolshivik Communists were international. Apart from this, there’s no difference in their policies. Hitler enslaved and killed only certain races and people who they found socially unacceptible, and the Bolshiviks enslaved and killed EVERYBODY, regradless of race or creed.

First of all, that wasn’t a debate, not even a “mock” debate. It was a press conference. Code Pink isn’t engaging in free speech. That is government-subsidized coercion.
Finally, I have an idea for my fellow Marines who are tasked with recruiting from the Planet California: If they hold their protests from Noon to 4 on Wednesdays, then that is the perfect time to draw the shades, lock the doors, and go do some field work.
Speak to some youngsters at school. Run a charity fitness camp. Get a good nap. Grab lunch with a Marine returning from war.
I’ll vote for my representative and other state and local people, but I WON’T vote for McCain. I’ll vote for some silly-nilly nobody with no hope to get 100,000 votes nationwide before I’ll give this pandering liberal my vote.
It’s sad, really, that John McCain has become what he is. His service to our country is admirable, but his liberal views and ideas are repugnant. I am infuriated by his dirty campaign tactics. Ronald Reagan is spinning in his grave.

I hope the Marines park a Hummer, (or better yet, a tank), in the code pink parking spot, whether there is a vehicle already there, or not.
Now I’m confused. The looney left doesn’t want the military to recruit in Berkeley. But I thought they “support” our military and they love the troops. Or do they just say that to make us think they love this country, when in fact, they would be quite happy living under a dictator like their beloved Castro or Chavez.
It reminds me of the pictures of the anti-war marches during Viet Nam, when some of these same people were proudly carrying the Viet Cong flag. It made me realize, they weren’t against the war, they were against America WINNING the war.

The number for the Berkeley Recruiters station is 510-705-8060. I got the number from the “Meca” site which tells people to protest and to call daily telling the Marines that they are not welcome. Heh heh heh. I don’t think that my message of “God bless all of you, and don’t give up- there are a lot of us who are proud of you and know the debt we all owe” was exactly the message that they wanted me to convey though.
Tough.
I wonder if a daily “God bless” type phone call would be welcomed or would block people trying to join though? Do you think the recruiters would mind?
I’ve emailed my thoughts to all the council members, I urge everyone else to do the same.

#86 JoAnn – can you please post that link – I will gladly report it to the local telecommunications provider – there ARE laws against abuse of telecommunications devices, and this is a clear one. Perhaps a hefty fine will make them think twice about abusing the constitutional rights of others.

Then I called the Recruiter and told the Sargeant that there are people in the Bay Area who support them and appreciate their service.
