McCain: “I’ll rely on people to judge me by the company that I keep.”

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 1, 2008 03:03 PM

John McCain said at the GOP debate two days ago: “I’ll rely on people to judge me by the company that I keep.”

The company John McCain keeps:

Russ Feingold.
Teddy Kennedy.
Lindsay Grahamnesty.
Juan “Mexico First/Free Flow” Hernandez.
Jerry “Spanish first” Perenchio. Geraldo Rivera.
La Raza.
Charles Keating.
John Kerry.
The New York Times.

Now, contrast McCain’s open borders backers and staffers with Gov. Mitt Romney’s new immigration enforcement adviser–one of the brightest minds and experienced architects of homeland security:

Today, Kris Kobach, noted immigration policy expert and head of the Kansas Republican Party, announced his endorsement of Governor Mitt Romney. Kobach will serve as an adviser to Governor Romney on border security and immigration reform issues.

“For years, Kris Kobach has distinguished himself in his work to ensure that our immigration system respects the rule of law and ends illegal immigration while protecting the legal immigration that has made our country great. He knows firsthand how important it is that we protect our country by securing our borders and rejecting amnesty proposals. I look forward to working with Kris as we tackle this critical challenge,” said Governor Romney.

Joining Romney for President, Kobach said, “Of all the Republican presidential candidates, Governor Romney has outlined the clearest vision for how we are going to end illegal immigration in this country. More importantly, he has the record to back up his words. When he was Governor, he vetoed a bill that would have rewarded illegal aliens with in-state tuition rates, and he also increased cooperation between state and federal law enforcement. In one of our country’s most liberal states, he stood up for the enforcement of immigration laws. He will do the same as President.”

Background On Kris Kobach:

Kris Kobach Is A Noted Immigration Expert, Professor Of Law And Head Of The Kansas Republican Party. In 1996, Professor Kobach joined the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law (UMKC) faculty. In 2001, he was awarded a White House Fellowship serving in the office of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. There he would serve as the Attorney General’s chief adviser on immigration law and border security. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Kobach was charged with the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) efforts to tighten border security and implement the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System. Before leaving DOJ in 2003, he led the reform of the immigration court system. Professor Kobach has litigated a number of high-profile immigration lawsuits including representing the city of Hazleton, Pennsylvania. He is a Senior Counsel at the Immigration Reform Law Institute. At the Law School, he teaches Constitutional law and immigration law.

From Johnny Dollar: Yet another endorsement of McCain from Geraldo Rivera…

Parting thoughts from Karl at Protein Wisdom, who takes a close look at McCain’s vaunted record and concludes:

In sum, a review of McCain’s record shows that it is long on biography and national security credentials, with a claim of fiscal discipline that stands largely because the claim that McCain gets things done by reaching out to Democrats is mostly fiction. As Karl Rove put it in the 2000 campaign, ” Senator McCain is a 17-year Washington insider whose accomplishments are few and far between.” Not much has changed in the interim.

Ironically, this would almost provide comfort to those who are content when the government is not expanding – but for the fact that McCain is seeking much greater power and influence to enact his costly liberal agenda. Moreover, he is not running on that agenda; he is running on his biography, his perceived personal qualities and the public’s vague notion of “change.”

Should he be nominated and elected on that basis, as opposed to his record and agenda, it would not be shocking to find McCain living out a funhouse mirror version of the Clinton years — having to twist arms for narrow victories, having major proposals utterly fail in Congress, shrinking in stature, playing the Maverick by triangulating on small issues, and so on.

Another stellar legal mind and counterterrorism expert who successfully prosecuted the 1993 WTC jihadists, Andrew McCarthy, signs on to the Romney campaign. Like McCain said, judge them by the company they keep:

Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced that Andrew C. McCarthy will be joining his Advisory Committee on the Constitution and the Courts, which is co-chaired by Professor Douglas W. Kmiec, former constitutional legal counsel to President Ronald Reagan, and former Congressman David McIntosh who co-founded the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies.

Making today’s announcement, Governor Romney said, “Throughout his distinguished legal career, including his 18 years of service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, during which he led the fight against radical jihadists, Andrew McCarthy has been a champion for protecting the American people. With his experience, Andy’s counsel on national security and related legal matters will be invaluable in my campaign for our nation’s highest office. I am greatly honored to have his wise counsel and deep experience in my campaign.”

With today’s announcement, McCarthy said, “Governor Mitt Romney embodies the American ideal: success through talent, hard work and faith. He’s a committed conservative. As president, I believe he’ll bring out the best of America, which means Americans, not government. He’ll unite us, not divide us with class-warfare rhetoric that scorns the American dream of self-reliance and value creation – as if it were somehow different from patriotism rather than the engine of patriotism. Mitt understands how the economy works because he’s worked in it, not just regulated it from Washington down to the last light-bulb. He understands we’re in a global war that demands not just a strategy for Iraq but a strategy for repelling jihadism. He’ll push to give our agents the tools they need to gather the intelligence vital to protecting American lives. And he can be trusted to appoint solid judges who will interpret the law – not re-invent it in a way that narrows fundamental rights like political speech while expanding the lawfare rights of terrorists.

“I supported, Rudy Giuliani, who hired me as a young prosecutor, because of his intelligence, executive competence, and commitment to our national security. I see in Governor Romney those same qualities. They are the qualities we need to face our nation’s challenges, and they are why I am so proud to support him.”

Background On Andrew C. McCarthy:

Andrew C. McCarthy Directs The Center For Law & Counterterrorism At The Foundation For Defense Of Democracies. He is also a contributing editor at National Review Online and a member of the Committee on the Present Danger. His book, Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad, will be released on March 10 by Encounter Books.

For 18 years, Mr. McCarthy was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. From 1993 through 1995, he led the terrorism prosecution against Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and eleven others in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and a plot to bomb New York City landmarks. He served for several years as the Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District’s satellite office in White Plains, and, following the 9/11 attacks, supervised the Office’s Command Post near Ground Zero in New York City.

In 2004, Mr. McCarthy served at the Pentagon as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at both Fordham University’s School of Law and New York Law School, as well as a Deputy United States Marshal in the federal Witness Protection Program.

Mr. McCarthy is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Justice Department’s highest honors: the Attorney General’s Exceptional Service Award (1996) and Distinguished Service Award (1988). In addition to being featured regularly in National Review, Mr. McCarthy’s articles have also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Commentary, The New Criterion, The Weekly Standard, USA Today and many other publications. He is frequently featured as a commentator on television and nationally syndicated radio broadcasts.

All Fox is doing is giving McCain a lame but passable excuse to not debate Romney on Meet the Press due to a “scheduling conflict”, but the excuse is intellectually dishonest, like everything McCain is saying to try to become President of the United States.

If you can relax and chill out with THIS in your backyard, you will be very happy with McCain as POTUS.

McCain promises to keep pushing for the single biggest PERMANENT transformatonal mistake this country can make this century. Against the will of American citizens.

In one business day, DHS has to do background checks and health checks on anywhere from 12 to 30 million illegal aliens. And if they can’t do that, every applicant gets immediate PERMANENT residency.

And no matter how high and wide a fence we build (McCain doesn’t seem to be in a hurry on this) you will NEVER stop the future flood of another 30 million right behind them.

We have to start REVERSING the illegal flow, as 4 states have done.

McCain, Obama, and Hillary are all guaranteed to harm this country permanently.

My perspective is that conservative Republicanism was so successful post Ronald Reagan that the Party got a lot of power hungry people who had no interest in the conservative revolution but wanted to ride the wave. Well, it looks like the wave has crested thanks to these political opportunists, and the coming crash will see them run away after having destroyed the very philosophy that brought them to power. And, to top it all, they will blame the folks who espoused that philosophy for their loss of power.

    1. You may want to check out the McCain website and review the list of endorsements. Quite a few pretty conservative folks, including Ted Olson, who’s about as conservative as it gets.

    2. McCain considers himself a Goldwater/Reagan conservative. Most of you should probably go back and review the positions/records of these two pioneers of the traditional, modern conservative movement in this country. You might be surprised.

Maybe Ann, MM and other conservitive’s that own the blogosphere and air waves could be convinced (If McCain look’s as if he will be nominated after Feb 5) to start a write in campaign for a suitable conservitive candidate. I’ve been thinking alot about this latley but everyone that is displeased at the prospect of McCain becoming POTUS or holding your nose and voting for the lesser of two evil’s need’s to be on the same page and vote for the same write in nationwide, here is the website address, http://www.conservitivewritein.org like I said everyone need’s to be on the same page though, some may think this is an impossible task but I think that as American’s we should think about all of the thing’s men have said where impossible and that have been proven to be possible. The fact is if this is to happen the time is now, after Feb 5 we have 1 month to organize and choose a suitable candidate and 8 month’s to campaign for the write in candidate that is longer than the two parties themselve’s have to organize behind their respective choice at their convention’s. This would be a true grass root’s campaign and if successful would be a wake up call to not only the Republican leadership that have hijacked the party but the Democrat’s whom think that the people of this country can’t think for themselves. Unite and take our country and political system back from the bloated over feed arogant career politician’s that think that we have no choice but to vote for them and their party.

Goldwater and Reagan inspired me. McCain insults me with his, “You can’t do it, my friends (i. e., American citizens)” and his buddy Graham, when addressing the racist La Raza, called ME a bigot. McCain is not MY friend.

It’s time to drop the vitriol, the demagoguery, the hyperbole and get behind the presumptive GOP nominee.

No vitriol. No demagoguery. Just firm principles. Like caring about American citizens before rewarding foreign invaders with overnight permanent residency.

Otherwise, you’ve pretty much guaranteed our worst nightmare: President Hillary Clinton.

My worst nightmare is voting for someone who will sell out his own country to grant instant residency and probable citizenship to up to 30 million illegal aliens. Which will encourage the NEXT 30 million to start crossing our border. No thanks.

Here is the nightmare that the policies of McCain, Bush, Kennedy, Hernandez, et al, have brought to San Diego. No thanks.

    DISDAIN FOR MCCAIN!

As most of you wake up this Saturday morning, don’t be lulled into self-fulfilling defeatism by a mainstream media and your own disappointment at the way the world looks. Ronald Reagan would never approve.

Below is a template for a respectful e-mail to Chris Wallace at Fox News Sunday along with the address.

CALL the talk shows. E-MAIL the bigwigs in media. POST here and everywhere. GET THE WORD OUT! It’s a day to spend devoted to making change happen, and it can.

McCain has large support but generally soft support. GET OUT THE WORD:

    1. Immigration.

    2. Juan Hernandez and his demands that the United States disassemble all laws pertaining to immigration - McCain’s immigration advisor, right here, right now.

    3. Voted against the Bush tax cuts!!!!!

    4. Never did anything heroic as a soldier except get shot down and captured. Literally.

    5. Almost willing changed party affiliation and joined the Democratic Party.

I also recommend that you IMMEDIATELY AND RESPECTFULLY E-MAIL CHRIS WALLACE with the following questions so he can legitimately bring them up to McCain. GIVE WALLACE THE COURAGE TO DO IT!

The e-mail for Fox news Sunday is

    FNS@foxnews.com

You have less than one day to let them know how unhappy you are with McCain. If you have already e-mailed, don’t be shy or lazy - do it again!@

Here’s a draft to cut and paste in case you’re not quite sure how to say it, and don’t worry if it sounds like a form letter - the last paragraph takes care of that concern:

    ***************************************

    Dear Chris Wallace,

As you know, many Republican conservatives are disgusted at the thought that as the pick and shovel grass-roots workers of our party, all our hard work has been rewarded by a possible standard-bearer in the form of John McCain.

In order to let the truth be heard, I respectfully insist as a loyal Fox News Channel viewer that you ask Mr. McCain the following questions and hold him to task for not giving straight answers.

    1. What is your executive experience that qualifies you to be hired for the job of President of the United States? Not senatorial leadership qualifications, but executive leadership qualifications on your resume by which the American people can decide to hire you as President of the United States?

    2. It has become well-known throughout the country over the last week that among your staff is a man named Juan Hernandez, well-known to Fox News viewers as a man who has bold-facedly called for the dismantling of virtually all US immigration law in an effort to essentially remove all restrictions to illegal immigration from Mexico. Why would you have a man like that on your staff if you claim to have heard the will of the American people to stop illegal immigration?

    3. It’s a matter of record that you were one of two senators who actually voted against the Bush tax cuts, tax cuts widely recognized as saving the US economy the last time a recession was at hand. Why did you do that and given that record, why should the American people trust you to keep taxes low and manage the US economy.

    4. As a follow-up, are you willing to pledge to the conservative base right here and now that you will under no circumstances raise taxes or sign into law a bill that does?

    5. Only a few years back as senator you almost changed party affiliations and became a democrat. Given your personal closeness to extreme left wing democrat senators like Ted Kennedy, why should Republican voters believe that you wouldn’t follow through and change party affiliation and become a democrat as President?

Many people are aware of this list of questions and will be watching closely to see to it that you continue to do the people’s work by submitting these questions respectfully but forcefully to Senator McCain.

    Yours Very Truly

Great advice, but I think I can write a couple of better questions.

I sent to Chris Wallace the following questions:

You said at the Republican debate on Wednesday: [Insert video clip here.] I’ll rely on people to judge me by the company that I keep.”

    America wants to know:

How can anyone believe that you will stop illegal immigration when your Hispanic outreach coordinator is Juan Hernandez who is an open border zealot and was the head of Mexico’s Presidential Office for Mexicans Abroad?

    ************

How you claim to have a Straight Talk Express when you lied in the debate about Mitt Romney and Iraq withdrawal timetables?

Anyone can write whatever they want, of course. I’d recommend those questions because they’re real torpedoes for the straight-talk tricycle.

However, a word of very serious caution if we want this to work: avoid words like “zealot” and “lied”. Avoid words Wallace himself would be uncomfortable saying. He’s a professional.

Don’t let your understandable seething contempt and venomous hatred for Sheriff OpenBoarders get in the way of the proper protocol and ediquette needed to gain the trust and empathy of a hardened professional television journalist. Yes, slp, you kept it polite to Wallace, but to get him to act, you must present your questions as though they were polite to McCain.

Be thoughtful, professional and polite. AND DO IT NOW.This might very literally be our last chance. Pour on the juice, but do it in polite numbers, not occasional “over-emphasis”. And be sure to get everyone you know into this. I’ve already cut and pasted this onto a couple of message borders, but you have to help because I only know a couple!

If Mitt loses out on Super Tuesday, the Republican Party is over. Mitt could start a new Conservative Party and make it a three way election.
