Talk back to Berkeley: Sign the petition; Update: Troop-bashers go berserk, chain themselves to recruitment center; mayor wants to evacuate Marines

Update 2/2 . Internet undercover photojournalist Zombie has fresh photos of the Berkeley siege. Here’s how the anti-troop loons defaced the Marine recruitment center this time:

Update 2/2: The Marine recruitment center in Berkeley is under siege and anti-war zealots are completely unhinged

As the right-wing blogosphere railed and a U.S. senator vowed financial retaliation against the Berkeley City Council for its effort to boot the Marine Corps out of town, three war protesters ratcheted up pressure from the left by chaining themselves Friday to the front door of the downtown Marine recruiting office.

The demonstrators snapped their locks shut at 7 a.m. and spent the next 7 1/2 hours blocking the door, waving and chanting as hundreds of cars driving by honked in support. Finally, at 2:30 p.m., police snipped the chains and arrested them.

Two of the three were cited for blocking a business and released, and the third was booked into jail on an unrelated traffic warrant, police said.

The demonstrators promptly said they will keep protesting outside the recruiting station at 64 Shattuck Square until the Marines leave Berkeley – which is what the City Council advised the service to do in a vote Tuesday night that called the Marines “unwelcome intruders.”

Oh, I love how the SF Chronicle characterizes bloggers as “ballistic,” and not these nutballs trying to drive the Marines out of Berzerkeley:1berzerk.jpg

The mayor wants to evacuate the Marines and is casting the city as the victim:

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates offered Friday to help the U.S. Marines leave town by negotiating an end to the lease for their recruiting station, even as he backpedaled on a City Council resolution declaring the Corps “uninvited and unwelcome intruders” in the city.

In the face of an onslaught of pro-military criticism from around the country, Bates, a retired Army captain, also issued a statement that said the City Council’s resolution Tuesday night “did not adequately differentiate our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces and our opposition to the Iraq war policy.” He said he would ask the council to modify the resolution at its next meeting, scheduled for Feb. 12.

A Marines spokeswoman said Friday that the Corps has no intention of abandoning its space at 64 Shattuck Square that has been the subject of protests for months.

In an interview Friday, Bates said he has received more than 1,000 e-mails on the resolution, mostly from “the right wing that has really seized up on this and mobilized to pound us.”

Darn right.

Melanie Morgan e-mails me another update:

Senator DeMint’s staff is reporting that they have been contacted by many other Senators to co-author legislation to strip Berkeley of pork barrel spending totalling over $2 million for the City Council’s outrageous attempts to run the USMC Recruiting office from it’s Shattuck Avenue location.

Senator DeMint’s office is just a few hours away from completing the final legislative draft.

On the Congressional side, Republican lawmakers are hearing from thousands of constituents about the efforts to silence the free speech rights of our troops by running the Marine Recruiting office out of town, and they are rushing to complete their own companion legislation. Move America Forward is urging people to contact Congressional representatives to keep the pressure on.

Senator DeMint has shown great leadership in fighting back against the left-wing, anti-war, anti-troops politicans who populate Berkeley city government and the crazy moonbats at CodePink, International A.N.S.W.E.R., and MoveOn.org who support them.

e have been contacted by Marine groups across Northern California, Cal Berkeley Young Republicans, SF State Young Republicans and a tsunami of e-mails in support.

The MAF petition denouncing the Berkeley City Council crashed earlier today after your blog posting due to the huge traffic surge, plus my appearance on Your World with Neil Cavuto.
We have fixed the problem, and our server is now fully capable of handling the influx.

Folks can sign the petition glitch-free now at www.moveamericaforward.com

In addition to marching on the Berkeley City Council on February 12th, the next regularly scheduled meeting, several Marine veterans groups are planning to jump aboard their motorcycles and join us in protest.

Cal Berkeley Republican students are coming, San Francisco State University student Republicans, as well as Joe and Jane Citizen.

Judging from the response to our office, there are going to be a LOT more folks who join in.

Our phones are flooded with people who are insulted, angry, and frustrated at what has transpired in Berkeley, not just in the San Francisco Bay Area, but across the country as MoveOn.org proceeds with it’s incremental strategy to oust military recruiting efforts and undermine support for our military men and women who are the BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST this country has to offer.

MoveOn.org lost the public relations battle to end this “illegal, immoral, unjust war” this summer and they have lost every single vote in Congress since.

The pro-troop side is winning, but we still have big battles to fight.

Watching the back of our miitary men and women is our duty, and our responsibility and our honor.

THANK-YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Move America Forward’s Melanie Morgan sends word of a new petition protesting Berkeley’s discrimination against the Marines. She tells me: “We will be delivering the petition in person to the City of Berkeley at the next regularly scheduled meeting. Thanks for helping to spread the story of the outrageous conduct and slander against our troops.” The petition is here. The text:

To: The City Council, Mayor and City Manager of Berkeley, California

We, the undersigned, do register our complete outrage with the City of Berkeley for the recent resolutions that criticized our Marines, as part of an effort to harass the Marine Recruiting Center and chase all vestiges of the United States military outside of the city of Berkeley, California.

We take particular umbrage with the instructions given to the City Manager of Berkeley to tell the United States Marines that they are, “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”

It is shameful for you to attack our military men and women who nobly and bravely serve this nation to protect our security and defend our freedoms and liberties. Those liberties include the right to Freedom of Speech, which you seem to believe should not be afforded to the members of the United States Marine Corps and service personnel in other branches of the Armed Forces.

I call upon you to immediately revoke the resolutions passed that defamed and insulted our U.S. Marines and issue a public apology to this nation, and in particular, the honorable and heroic men and women of the United States military.

If you’re not yet motivated to speak up about this madness, here’s the text of the Berkeley city council agenda with the “Peace and Justice Commission’s” recommendation that led to the resolution giving Code Pink special parking privileges and a free sound permit to protest at the Marine recruitment center:

From: Peace and Justice Commission

Recommendation:

1. Direct the City Attorney to investigate and report back to Council within 60 days on City options for enforcing Chapter 13.28 of the Berkeley Municipal Code, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, with respect to military recruiting offices in Berkeley;

2. Direct the City Manager to send letters to the Marine Corps Recruiting Station at 64 Shattuck Avenue and to General James T. Conway, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, advising them that the Marine recruiting office is not welcome in our city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders;

3. Encourage all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station, and applaud residents and organizations such as Code Pink, that may volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley.

I’m not dissing the other branches either. All service branches are the best just by the very nature that you have to volunteer to be a part of the best damned military in the world.

First, thank you MM for such good coverage of this and helping MAF get the word out. I will certainly sign and petition!

I was reading the recollections of a Vietnam Veteran yesterday. He told of being bussed in vehicles with painted windows when he came home (only to find out later that it was to shield the Vets coming home from the angry and vulgar gestures from the protesters they were sure to encounter). He told of being jumped and beat up to the point of having broken bones by demonstrators. This all happened in the San Francisco area.

The actions in Berkeley of today are nothing new. This has been their mantra for a very long time. My mother always used to tell me to be careful for what I asked for — I may just get it only to find it was the worst thing I could have ever wished on myself. Maybe it’s time for Berkeley to learn that lesson.

I don’t think that anything will ever change their minds though. They have embraced hatred and “bigotry” toward all armed service members. They are close minded and have a value system that dictates their need to remain ignorant and rebellious. It’s their identity.

Any actions we do take are for our beloved Marines, and them alone. We can’t correct Berkeley, but we can show our Marines that they do not stand alone — not only do they promise no Marine is left behind, but there are civilians who pledge the same.

Maybe DeMint could become the first president from South Carolina. Andrew Jackson was born in SC, but was a resident of Tennessee when elected president.

And as far as to why a senator from SC is getting involved in a situation in California, I think what’s going on in Berkeley should be of concern to all US citizens, and especially those holding elected office in the federal government.

From reading the rest of the story at the SF Chronicle, I am just struck by some of this:

“We made really great statements by blocking the door,” said one of the three blockaders, 64-year-old Mary Ann Thomas of Oakland. “It’s time we became more articulate about what we’re doing.”

    Yeah – real articulate…

Members of the council who voted to condemn the Marine Corps station were unbowed.
“I guess they’ve never heard of free speech,” Councilwoman Dona Spring said. “I’ve had a lot of nasty phone messages today, threatening me with things like saying, ‘I’ll take you out.’ But they can go ahead. I don’t feel scared.”

Free speech – what about the free speech rights of the military?!?

“You guys are just cannon fodder!” the chained protesters shouted at three teenage boys who walked past the office and said they wanted to go inside. “They want to train you to kill babies!”

Right then and there – somebody should have hauled off and hit this guy.

The teenagers turned around and left. At one point, UC Berkeley student Kyrolos El Giheny walked up to the front door and tried to go inside to talk to Lund about a possible Marine career. He was unable to get past the chained protesters.

Yeah, so much for the rights of assembly of others (another 1st amendment right that these morons seem to have forgotten)

These guys are off their rockers, and the fact that they are backed by the City Council is just astonishing to me. Petitions, marches, everything – we need to not let this go.

They will be arrested, get their little adrenaline high, pat themselves on the back, fool themselves into thinking they actually accomplished squat today, and finally go home and take their psychotropic drugs like they do every day.

A life void of truly meaningful work and an understanding of being a good neighbor is a sad thing to have to witness. These Marines deserve a lot of show of support.

I think we should all send the Recruiters some delivery pizza or anything else in the area that is good and delivers — shoot maybe we can all take turns and take care of our guys all week long. Is anyone familiar with that area? Next time their doors are accosted they can at least have something hot and gooey to eat or accidentally drop on protesters.

I am proud of those young men who braved this collection of drug addled geriatric throw-backs. to think that they will not be returning at a later time when these 1969 left-overs are all back at the hippy retirement home collecting their prescription marijuana and government checks, slapping each other on the back for what a great job they did is just laughable. The fact that they showed up, walked through them at all shows that they were committed, just could not move these wastes of human flesh to get in.

this was nothing more than an inconvinience, and ultimately will not have changed anyone’s mine who wishes to become a marine, or a Soldier, a Sailor, an Airman, a Coastie…anyone who wants and feels the burning desire of public service will not be swayed.

That is definately what these horrible individuals do not understand, nor will ever understand. See, they are the epitome of selfishness. They have no idea what the term “Sacrifice” means. People who serve in the Military…from the cook or computer technician to the most skilled Special Forces Operator, people who become a Law Enforcement Officer, a Firefighter, Paramedic, EMT, Nurse, Doctor,…hese people know what it means to sacrifice. They know what it means to use their lives, to SACRIFICE themselves, to offer their time and lose days that they could spend with their wives, husbands, children doing other things, better things, to give to their fellow man.

These scumbags have delluded themselves into thinking that chaining themselves to buildings, yelling foul insults, throwing rocks, paint, in some cases animal blood, urine, threats, taking money and services from the government they disdain, from the hard working Americans that they threaten and call horrible names and despise, and offer up all the help and allegiance to every single one of the enemies of this Nation just oout of spite if not misguided beliefs and lack of morals, is somehow a form of “sacrifice”. Their narcissism will not allow them to see just how wrong and sick that form of thinkng is. Their is truly the way of the coward, the way of the one who runs from the real danger. They would never offer themselves for the sake of their fellow man. They would not know how. They think that they are doing that by keeping some kid fromm speaking to a recruiter, yet what they may be doing by eliminating the Military is leading the nation into certain death and destruction. Their actions lead to the deaths and murders of coumtless Americans and others in countries far away when our enemies see that they have support from these aged hippy freaks.

Our enemies tell their own people, “look, the Americans cannot get together and get behind their President. They sit in front of their Military bases and tell them that we are right and they are wrong. Come my brothers…let us kill more people in the name of Allah, let us show them that their efforts are not wasted.”

It is not that they use Bush. It is not Bush that is creating more Al Qaeda recruits. It is these treasonous scum that shows the enemy that all they need do is keep doing what they have been doing a little longer and soon, this country will capitulate, will elect a coward as President and turn tail, tail between it’s legs, and allow the Terrorists and Islamic Neo-nazis to run roughshod over the Middle-East, Europe, Africa and stretching beyond into the Pacific Rim and outer reaches.

Sacrifice? Morals? They have none. Treason and sedition. Criminals. Horrible human beings that have been misguided due to being spoiled since birth by parents that fought hard, lived through a depression, saw evil that never before walked earth as it had and defeated it and swore that their children would never have to see such evil again. The baby boomers were spoiled rotten brats, that have done more harm to this country in their time than the good that their parents ever did.

I worship the parents of the Baby Boomers. They are an incredible generation the likes of which this world has never seen. If only we had the likes of them now to kick the butts of these Baby Boomers who are still children…who never grew up and need that spanking they never got. Shame on them. Shame on every single Liberal in this country. You are all working your hardest to destroy what your fathers and mothers fought so hard to create and defend for you…and I and my children do NOT appreciate it.

Indeed, as Michelle reports, Mitt and Sheriff OpenBoarders are in a statistical dead heat. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT. RIGHT THIS MOMENT, BEFORE SOMETHING ELSE COMES UP:

The e-mail for Fox news Sunday is

    FNS@foxnews.com

    *************************************

    Dear Chris Wallace,

As you know, many conservative Republican’s are dismayed at the thought that as the Reagan conservitive’s of our party, all our hard work has been rewarded by a possible standard-bearer in the form of John McCain.

In order to let the truth be heard, I respectfully insist as a loyal Fox News Channel viewer that you ask Mr. McCain the following questions and hold him to task for not being the straight talker he claim’s to be.

    1. How can you claim to have the Straight Talk Express when in Florida and California you misrepresented Mitt Romney statment’s on Iraq withdrawal timetables?

    2. You said at the Republican debate on Wednesday ” I’ll rely on people to judge me by the company that I keep.” It has become well-known throughout the country over the last week that among your staff is a man named Juan Hernandez, well-known to Fox News viewers as a man who has called for the dismantling of virtually all US immigration law in an effort to essentially remove all restrictions to illegal immigration from Mexico. Why would you have a man like that on your staff if you claim to have heard the will of the American people to stop illegal immigration?

    3. It’s a matter of record that you were one of two senators who actually voted against the Bush tax cuts, tax cuts widely recognized as saving the US economy the last time a recession was at hand. Why did you do that and given that record, why should the American people trust you to keep taxes low and manage the U.S. economy and are you willing to pledge to the conservative base right here and now that you will under no circumstances raise taxes or sign into law a bill that does?

    4. What is your executive experience that qualifies you to be hired for the job of President of the United States? Not senatorial leadership qualifications, but executive leadership qualifications on your resume by which the American people can decide to hire you as President of the United States?

    5. Only a few years back as senator you almost changed party affiliations and became a Democrat. Given your personal closeness to extreme left wing Democrat senators like Ted Kennedy, why should Republican voters believe that you wouldn’t follow through and change party affiliation and become a Democrat as President?

Many people are aware of John McCain’s record and this list of question’s. We will be watching closely to see that Fox News Channel continue’s to be fair and balanced by submitting these questions respectfully but forcefully to Senator McCain.

    Respectfuly,

Prior to entering military service and then my current overseas deployment, I participated in two (usually three) counter-protests like that–one being in another city–all while holding a full-time job.

    2. After the scum left that day, some Marines in uniform stopped at the office. After I told them what had happened, one of them said something about wishing he’d been there… with his M-4. (For the uninitiated who don’t know American military armament from their garden hose, the M-4 carbine is basically a short version of the M-16 rifle, and is often issued for use in houseclearing and other close quarters battle.) Just thought it was interesting.

Oh quit yer fawning. It makes ya look like a silly school girl. The Army has dress blues as well; as sharp and good looking as the Soldiers who wear them. But we don’t consider ourselves part of a frickin’ fashion show. We’re more a boots-in-the-mud type of force and we don’t care if we “look pretty” while we’re killing the enemy.

    Just sayin’.

    You are absolutely right.
    ACTION speaks louder than words.

    Where are OUR advocacy groups?

I remember when the pro-life marchers (Operation Rescue et al) were arrested and the book was thrown at them.

The code pinkos and Berkeley Council types always seem to get a free pass.

Time to go to my other favorite site: USMA.edu. and smile at the photos of those in grey before they put on the blue.

    Army BLUE – GOOD LOOKING!

That’s the shock and awe of the Corps, the enemy look’s at our uniforms and say’s “look at their nicley starched hat’s and their pressed uniform’s” and while there looking at how good we look we put a bullet in their head.

Would the City Council afford the same privileges to counterprotesters as they’ve given to Code Pink if said counterprotesters showed up with large photos/posters of victims of terrorists? A counterbalance to the Abu Ghraib (sp?) photos. Get in the pinkos’ faces with those and see what happens.

As for the “training you to kill babies line?” How come these wackjobs aren’t down the street chained to the abortion clinic’s doors? They’re ACTUALLY killing the babies in there! But those are American babies….

WHere are Mitt, McCain, Obama, and Hill-Dawg? Why aren’t they in Berkeley confronting these treasonous SOB’s and calling them out? I would think this would be an excellent opportunity for each and every one of them to show this country exactly where they stand, and this would give the voting public precisely what they would need to make the correct choice when they go to the polls.

How they confront these hate-filled treasonous scumbags would definately say everything you would need to know about all four of them, don’t you agree?
