By Michelle Malkin  •  February 4, 2008 02:57 PM

Reader Matt Aho designed a new bumper sticker that sums up the conclusion of many sober, dry-eyed conservatives this week:

Folks, Mitt Romney is still in the race! New polls have Romney ahead in CA and GA, so John McCain’s nomination is not a foregone conclusion.

Republicans still have the opportunity to nominate a conservative, anti-amnesty governor with real-life business experience.

Volunteer, donate, or put up a yard sign. Until the winner is decided by delegate counts, this defeatism is inexcusable.

There were a couple of pieces in http://www.Frontpagemag.com today, one by Horowitz himself, that basically said conservatives were being foolish, refusing to grow up, acting like liberals, under the direction if not control of the talk-show “mafia” and generally not getting it — that McCain and maybe Romney were the only way to go. There was considerable effort in the two pieces to excuse McCain on a few issues, but no effort to consider that perhaps his critics have a point.

It’s was appalling how condescending the tone was. Much as I admire and respect Horowitz, I really don’t like being talked down to. I’ve gotten my fill of that from Michael Medved, who basically shouts from the rooftop the same lame excuses.

To be fair, there is no question about it: the country in general and conservatives in particular are in a hell of jam. Romney looks good at the moment, but only relative to McCain. Obama may well be delusional: “I’m going to heal the country … I’m going to repair the world … I’m going to stop climate change.” These are not the words of a rational human being. As for Hillary, Lord help us, it is so bad I think even she may be slightly more rational than Obama.

Now we come to McCain. The problem I have with him is that if you look at a piece here or there of his record you kind of get the impression that maybe we can live with this guy. But when you look at the whole record from 2000 on, you get a very strong impression of a man who despises conservatives, is much more comfortable and content with liberals, and has such deep seated anger issues that it is impossible to disagree with him let alone reason with him on just about anything. He is an economic ignoramus, an open borders bigot, and ab all around global-warming, capitalism-is-gonna-get-your-momma crank. He simply has no philosophy of government other than: “What makes me feel good about myself,” and if that isn’t a liberal, what is?

If McCain becomes the nominee, he is not going to “reach out” to Conservatives. He’s going to say: “I don’t need you guys one bit. I did this all by myself. Oh I’ll toss you a lie or two, but I am sure you know the code: FU and out of my way.”

The only fun we will have is when the media, who have kissed up to Mr. Maverick as long as he has been a thorn in the side of Republicans, will now turn on him with a vengeance, labeling him an old crazoid whose time is long past.

The sad fact of the matter is that the man is bully. And you know what they say about “republican” bullies: they’re cowards before liberal democrats.

    “Electile Dysfunction” Now THAT’S funny!

You could say that “Just looking at Queen Cankles gave me Electile Dysfunction… Buy two Blue Chip stocks on NASDAQ and call me in the morning!”

This truly IS a battle for the soul of the Republican Party with the future of the United States of America hanging in the balance. Lose this election and we lose the Supreme Court, the War on Terror, the Big Gov’t Nanny Solution to Global Warming, Healthcare, AND Amnesty for Illegals. Taxes will increase to pay for the programs that Congress will pass and a Dem President would sign into law. We conservatives stand to be on the losing end of every issue we’ve fought for in the last 8 years and WHY? Because we’ve been forced to choose between 4 RINOs (Fred! not included) or Ron Paul (who’s a few syllables shy of a proper last name by anyone’s measure).

And a big sarcastic “Thank You!” to Bob Dole for doing such a fine job of mouthing the words the McCain camp wrote for him! Do we need the advice of the man who lost to Clinton to help us decide who we should run against ANOTHER Clinton? Wouldn’t it be ironic to be termed “irrelevant” in not just one, but two elections in your lifetime, Mr. Dole?

Another piece of evidence that Washington insiders will stick together as thick as theives.

The republican party is still under the delusion that its members will vote in lockstep with their agenda. They are still in denial regarding the backlash that hit them on the amnesty debate, and still believe they dictate the needs of their members rather than vice versa.

The party needs a serious wake up call to be reminded that it is a government of the people. They don’t seem to recognize that they are out of touch with their members; the same members they have labeled as out of touch bigots who do not understand what is best for them.
