Chertoff: We’re “backsliding” on homeland security
Hey, look! Someone got DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff a clue for Christmas. A year after he crusaded for the McCain-Bush-Kennedy-Grahamnesty bill and showed more concern for illegal alien lettuce pickers than broken borders and immigration chaos, he is finally coming around to the view that maybe, just maybe, we’re not taking homeland security seriously enough. Seriously:
From weak border controls to the risk of chemical bombs, the United States could be backsliding on national security since the Sept. 11 attacks, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff said on Wednesday.
“A couple of years after 9/11 it would not have seemed conceivable that a ‘business as usual’ mentality could creep back into our public mind-set. It has begun to return,” Chertoff told a forum at Harvard University.
“I’m concerned that we are beginning to backslide,” he said, citing several areas where the United States has faced trouble while seeking to get tougher on security after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
“Beginning to backslide?”
“Business as usual?”
Chertoff, meet a full-length mirror.

The lettuce head picture is GREAT!! Keep posting it so people can see how our government and politicians lied about doing what the people wanted (and are still lieing…even McShamnesty).
Every once and a while the minions of bureaucracy must use their shrillometer and remind us all how much we need them. If not for their stalwart awareness and diligence we’d all be in a heap big pile of trouble.
Wow, did he start eating his wheaties or what? Or is his term winding down and he’s prepping for excuses upon the administration’s exit?
“Holy cow! There’s a lot of stuff not being done around here! … well, here are the keys, see ya!”
OK, I have to ask….am I the only one that gets the Vonage 1 cent calls to Mexico advert at the top of this page? I have to say there is a great deal of irony to that ad placement.
Chertoff is an incompetent eunuch!
I’m really glad Mr. Chertoff sounded the alarm. That’s very patriotic of him.
Since I am also a patriot, it now falls to me to find someone who can do something about it. I’ll call the person empowered to build a fence on the Mexican Border, improve port and airport security, and make things better:
The Secretary of DHS.
Hey, wait a minute…
Well, the good news is people are getting the message . That means that conservative views matter to a larger extent than just a block of numbers to which manipulative and opportunistic political candidates pander. Sometimes I wonder, but it’s been clear lately that they hear the anger. To those who think the GOP is ruined and not just highjacked, bla bla bla, this demonstrates that when we pour the heat on, it does matter. What does this mean we must do? Pour the heat on ten times harder. Chertoff got a clue? Good. Let’s show him what an education is all about. This is a great board. There are others, too, of course.
Keep the heat on.
Big Ange – It is worse than that – the ad I am viewing says ‘free’ calls to Mexico with Vonage!
Congress gives them everything else for nothing, I guess there is no reason phone calls should be exempt.
No! Chertoff is a corrupt, coward and, is trying to CYA, like in a plea-bargain. You see, you fell for Chertoff’s cheap trick, you find ‘very patriotic’.
LOL.. God Americans can’t see their politicians selling them off on every turn, which explains Clintons and Bushs. But, a nice try at sarcasm. Just not nearly enough, if the term ‘horse has left the barn’ means anything. Chertoff does and he can now sound noble at his own sell-out-blunders. Clever!
Let me think…
Chertoff is in charge
His charge (Homeland Security) is backsliding
…. me thinks again
Chertoff job not well done…ba bye
Instead of playing CYA Mr. Chertoff why the hell don’t you get off your butt and do something about it. The gross incompetence of the Department of Homeland Insecurity obviously starts at the top and works it way down the entire chain of command. Of course the foot soldiers are either poorly trained or afraid to do their jobs due to draconian PC restrictions or fear of ending up in jail for doing them.
Recently at the Boise Airport a man got through security and realized he was still wearing is .40 cal handgun (after all Idaho is a CCW state). He had to approach the eagle eyed TSA folks to ask them what he should do to leave the secure area and leave his weapon in his vehicle. You can’t fly with hygiene products, even bottles for babies and sippy cups are scrutinized, you have to remove your shoes, and Grandma gets felt up for wearing an under wire bra while someone in a Bhurka gets a free pass because we have to sensitive to Muslims instead of profiling them. One reason I avoid flying commercial if possible.
You and your entire Department are a waste of taxpayers stolen money. As we used to say back when I was flying Mr. Chertoff you are Q3 for judgment and compliance (or you failed for being dumb).
Well, duh. Took him long enough to get a clue. Sadly, this has been obvious to most Americans for a long time already.
Chertoff acts like this is a news flash! Typical bureaucrat, it isn’t fact until they realize it.
We’ve been in our hand basket on the way to…well…
I wonder what caused this great epiphany for him now.
Well start with vonage, I had been looking at it, not now. If you have it change.
Ok, don’t you guys think we are being a little hard on him? After all he is the only person who seems to believe the crap that he is spouting. This is no surprise to those of us who have been screaming at the top of our lungs – secure the border, build the fence. Secure, secure, secure. In other words -Do your damn job. Complacency kills. We are at war. Somebody please explain to me how the Head of Homeland Security gets complacent on homeland security? Anyone? Bueller??
I guess that is one of the 25 additional features for “free” that the lady in the orange shirt keeps harping about in the commercials, huh? Ugh!
Maybe, if we ask the question in Spanish, 30, someone can answer it for us.
Check the happy meal bags from McDonalds. I saved it but hubby must have burned it last night. El Tigre. Mi Padere kicks evildoers with his bronze boots of power or something like that. Must be from Nickelodeon. I don’t go to McDonalds but pre-K had a tour on Tuesday. Haven’t tuned on Nick for awhile. Figured out that Dora was an illegal with her map and backpack. They are starting to reach our kids and turn them into liberals. Will have to check out El Tigre.

Yes, no thanks to him and the Department of Homeland Security. About a month ago, I landed at Newark Airport, and there was a young Muslim guy deciding at customs who would be searched or not searched. His department is scared to death to take on the “diversity” crowd, and if they are not willing to be un-PC and if they keep hiring Muslims, we WILL have another huge terrorist attack.
Notice how he is shifting the blame from himself to a general “we” as a nation.
I’m not sure we ever had security to backslide from. Hey chertoff, since you’re in charge of DHS I guess you would know if your doing a good job or not.
Putz
Read Drudge today.
There is a report about an illegal terrorist group(s) that are planning to kidnap citizens…..probably to kill them.
What about it, HOMELAND INSECURITY???
Time for a poll: if Chertoff were fired, where would Dubya send him next to “serve his country” best?
A. Head of FEMA
B. Lead Task Force to Save Social Security
C. Supreme Court Justice
Sliding back?!? With this guy in charge?!?
I’m shocked!!
Crapweasel.
We’re backsliding? We?!? How about you and your department are backsliding, you ass.
Actually, I think Mr. Chertoff that you have this all wrong. You’re not backsliding. You can’t, you didn’t make any progress in the first place.
This Homeland Security Department CRAP was a waste of man and money from the beginning. Nothing called for a new department to sell us down the river(Rio Grande) at the tremendous expense this travesty costs.
With Chertoff as the head of it, it is just that much the more ridculous.
Hey Chertoff here’s a clue for you….SECURE THE BORDERS!!!! easy, simple and it’s the law…than the backsliding can end.
“We”? His job, his agency, his charge.
Interesting Chertoff would publicaly admit he should be immediately fired for incompetence.
I would say we have made great strides. A controlled society in which everyone is monitored is the best security, and Bush has reversed 200 years of freedom.
Really, Mr. C? We’re backsliding on H.S.? Gee.
Alphonse, when they come to install my telescreen, I’ll start believing your tripe.
And did anyone point your way to work this morning? Is there a food cop following you around the grocery store?
Where is this control you refer to?
more reasons why Chertoff-his-rocker needs to leave When are the elites going to realize that we are at war?
SHoward,
It’s the voices in his head. Do you hear that? There they go again.
#4…All I get are Verizon ads, thank goodness.
I don’t know how anyone could have been more clueless and inept than M
Chertoff unless it was someone that stood at the border with a welcome sign
and a Free Lemonade Lemonade Stand and an umbrella.
Is General Petraeous ready to retire and continue to serve his country as head of DHS?
By now it is apparent the Bush Administration is totally incompetent and Chertoff, captain of Katrina caliber performance, leads the parade of clowns. The Bush fear mongering has worn thin and the Feds treatment of not securing the border has made a joke of Home Land anything. Home Land security has never been anything other than lip service to justify Bush’s middle east jingoism.
I wonder if it registers that in addition to the borders and smothering Islamic sensitivity, that 2 Chinese firms managed to inject 800 M tons of poisoned gluten into the food stream. fortunately (for citizens) animal food…….this time.

In other news…water is wet.
Chertoff is just trying to make sure he is not indicted for malfeasance of office if someone has the balls to get a DOJ investigation going. He will then claim he warned everyone but no one headed his warnings.
He has no intention of securing the borders or enforcing the immigration laws of this country. In fact, he has conspired with people like Kay Bailey Hutchison to make sure the Secure Fence Act of 2006 would not be implemented.
Why do you think GWB appointed him and Julie Meyers in the first place?
It was not their past law enforcement experience that got them their jobs.
The Good News is Duncan Hunter has introduced new legislation to repeal the Hutchison Amendment.
“Duncan Hunter, R-Calif, author of the fencing provisions of the Secure Fence Act of 2006, has introduced new legislation in the House of Representatives to require the construction of double-layered fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico within six months, according to a memo sent to the National Association of Chiefs of Police”
Is this Chertoff’s way of gently breaking the news to us that the fence will not be finished when promised?
I guess completing the fence will be left up to the next adminstration. We’ll find out pretty quick how serious the next president is about our country’s security.
Is there any chance Chertoff might be replaced with a “strict constructionist” who will get serious about constructing a fence?
He is one of the reasons that we have an open border and he is backed by the Bush administration and folks like Gov Perry.
Chertoff, and Condi are agents for Mexico, and the New world Order. That is why there is a illegal alien invasion, and both of them should be brought up on charges.
Put a Marine Corp Platoon SGT. in charge, give him orders, then stand back. The job would get done ASAP, or PDQ.
I ran that through babel fish& the translation is “We need more money”…
