Caught Steyn at a recent conference in Malibu last year, along with other stellar Western Civilizational defenders (Ayaan Hirsi Ali, etc.)
He is indeed an extraordinary global polemical and writing talent.
Unfortunately, he is so right and right-on that he’s abandoned or been hounded out of key purportedly “conservative” mainstream print venues (UK Telegraph, Western Standard, Chicago Sun-Times, etc.) here and abroad by pusillanimous editors who can’t take the heat generated by his fiercely skewering expositions. Even now, the OC Register is being bombarded with the usual moonbat bilge occasioned by his columnal residence there.
I agree with Michelle’s rallying cry that we should be fierce in taking care of our own causal warriors everywhere: not just the frustrating nationalm, but also at the regional, state and and local levels.
The major of Hazleton is running for Congress. Support him. Major Egland is running for Congress. Support him. Support Swann. Support Steele. And let’s buy Steyn’s “America Alone”, or Goldberg’s “Liberal Fascism”; how about Timmerman’s “Shadow Warriors” and Podhoretz’ “World War IV.” They are crafting our message; let us be the viral vectors of its dispersion!

Mark Steyn I understand. There are MANY conservatives that can be given a platform that make sense. If conservatives are going to rally to the cause of conservatives then, we should rally conservatives to the cause and not bring in a liberal in sheep clothing to rally conservatives to a liberals cause. Sheesh.
The Repubs in DC have torpedoed the conservative base. McCain will bury the remains when he picks someone like Rudy to be his VP. At that point I will be inclined to say:

Every former POW who suffered through the horrific captivity in North VietNam should be treated with honor, dignity and respect. And that includes John McCain. This man went through five years with a shattered arm that the cruel NorthVietNamese (aided by the Soviets) refused to treat. He was held in isolation and subjected to every form of physical mistreatment and psychological warfare. He had to communicate with his fellow prisoners by tapping out morse code. Frequently he was held in a cell that was so cold he would get frostbite. And after two years of this, the Communist thugs offered him a deal: You get to go home if you will just sign a statement. McCain never considered it for a minute. McCain and all of his fellow POWs were, then and now, heroes. They deserve to be honored. It is one thing to disagree strongly with McCain’s views on this or that issue. That’s democracy. But to call John McCain all of these vicious names and to hurl all these personal insults at him is a form of sickness. When I see some of the former POWs (which I do from time to time because I live near a big navy base in an area filled with retired navy guys), I always thank them for their service. They are all modest men who do not talk about their heroism. But the idea of heckling a former POW when he speaks or of shunning him when he speaks is just immoral. I would like to see just how many people who hurl personal insults at McCain could survive five years in captivity. Ask the men who were in the prisons with John McCain about McCain. Enough said.
At one point in time, Benedict Arnold was a hero of the (soon to be) United States.
And if I ever met John McCain the first thing I would do is shake his hand and thank him for his service. The 2nd thing would be to ask him how in the hell anyone was supposed to take him seriously on immigration refore with Juan Lopez on his staff and Geraldo Rivera singing his praises.
I’ve yet to see anyone here denigrate John Mccain’s service or his time as a POW. However, that does NOT insulate him from criticism for actions as a Senator. We can seperate the two, it’s not our fault if you can’t.

All that is is energy wasted. Energy that could be used to fight for CONSERVATIVE planks on the party platform regarding immigraion, the border, taxes, judges, global warming, amensty, etc. Energy that could be used to force a conservative for the VP slot, and look forward to 2012 with a deserving conservative already in place as a leader. Energy that coudl be used to elect CONSERVATIVE local, state and congressional representatives, who will be even more vital given the likelihood of a liberal president.
You and those like you are so angry and muddleheaded that you ARE quitting. You actions speak for you. You;d rather continue attackign McCain uselessly than doing somethign about things that you can change. You’d rather quit than fight the battles we have remaining.
As I said in another thread, there’s a word for folks that quit while important fights still loom:

This isn’t about feelings; this is about
facts. McCain is no Conservative. As was said this morning locally, he is probably as Conservative as he’s going to be RIGHT NOW. If American’s moved Congress on the last Immigration Bill, we HAVE influence. I am keeping my powder dry. I will be “communicating” my
ideas to Mr. McCain. Do we really need him to feel like he’s going against “THE
MAN” which is his preferred position? I say no. Gentle, CONSTANT, firm pressure

Senator McCain’s Vietnam War record is the stuff of legends. He will forever be held up with high respect and esteem in my book for it.
That said, there are OTHER vets who were POWs in Vietnam who now hold elected federal office without the same view points as the man from Arizona. Why should THEIR point-of-view be summarily dismissed?
And as an aside, when will we let go of the Vietnam War from the political equation?? It is over, it has been over, and yet we continue to use it as a metaphorical bat in which to beat on the heads of those individuals who either didn’t serve, or whose sentiments don’t fit the template of the MSM.
As said by many all over the place, the ONLY reason to vote GOP in the fall election are the twin issues of National Security and SCOTUS nominations. To not do so will cost American lives and change the political / social landscape of our nation forever (and not in a good way).
Conservatives punished Republicans in 2006 — look at how that worked out for us. I mean, Trent Lott got his old job back for Pete’s sake. The current NRC leadership still doesn’t get it, IMHO.
The only recourse left to Conservatives is take matters into their own hands, starting with the election of their own at the local and grass root levels and building up, period. That means no sitting out of the elections in November.

I can’t recall on any of the threads on Michelle’s blog that any conservative has ever knocked John McCain’s record of service or his time as a POW. What has been said, including by me, is that it is not what is going to make a good POTUS.
There is a lot more that we have to consider and not the least of that is how he has conducted himself since getting elected to public office.
If you support John McCain, fine. Vote for him. At this juncture, I have no intention of checking his name in November nor do I intend to check the name of Clinton or Obama. I am leaning strongly toward leaving the box empty on the top slot of the ballot and focusing on other offices down the list.
The last thing I want to do is see our troops left hanging out to dry. But, I’m just not sure that I believe McCain on his advocacy of finishing the War on Terror. I get the uneasy feeling that he is using it as an issue that he thinks can set him apart from the other party.
Might I change my mind. We’ll see. But, McCain is going to have to show me a lot better than what I’ve seen from him over the years, including here lately.
He is just too disingenuous for me at this point. Things like brining Juan Hernandez onboard, when he is talking about securing our borders bothers me to no end. You can’t say one thing and do another, if you don’t want to be seen an untrustworthy.

And I don’t want to hear him reference the word “soldier” one more time in a speech. I get it. He served. Ah, that would be past tense. I’m not stupid. I want Constitutionalist Judges. Yes, let’s all boycott this next election and allow a Clinton or Obama presidency by default. I guarantee they will push for socialism and higher taxes. And how many justices will they appoint in the mold of Ruth Bader Ginsberg? And how about surrendering to the islamomutantpsychos asap? I am NOT a McCainiac, but it seems to me conservatives didn’t do that much for Thompson and a few others, nor did those candidates help themselves all that much. Huckleberry candiacy only helped McCain and those sanctimonious religious zealots who buy into Huck’s Christian purity and had a big bias against Mormonism take a share of blame too.
So if we are very lucky, we get a McCain presidency who might appoint judges in mold of Roberts, who WILL fight the evil terrorists and most likely will cave on shamnesty. He doesn’t seem all that healthy, so perhaps his veep would end up potus. So PULEEZE NO huckster as running mate.
I happen to think there is good possibility every thing will go to hell in handbasket regardless who is in whitehouse, but neither obama or the clintons (plural) should be anywhere near it. Like I said imagine the Supremes, Congress and WH as ALL socialism all the time. Funny that in places like France and Germany they are showing sense and backing off on socialism to some extent and I suppose all those give me my free kaka state benefits naturally will embrace Barack and Hillary’s Xmas all year long.
Steyn has many good points. I hope he wins against the Canadian kangaroo court that he’s up against, too.
The British band played “The World Turned Upsidedown” when Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at the end of the Revolutionary War: kind of feels like that now, with these little radical pro-Islamist groups being able to get dhimmi-like reactions from people who should know better.
