Democrat Rep. Tom Lantos dies

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 11, 2008 09:42 AM

AP now reporting: “A spokeswoman for Rep. Tom Lantos of California says the congressman has died. Spokeswoman Lynne Weill said Monday morning that the 80-year-old Lantos, the only survivor of the Holocaust to serve in Congress, died at Bethesda Naval Medical Center.”

Didn’t agree with him on much, but he rightly castigated Europe over its anti-Gitmo hysteria and had a remarkable personal history.

Here’s what he said when he retired last fall:

“It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family, and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a member of Congress,” Lantos said in a statement. “I will never be able to express fully my profoundly felt gratitude to this great country.”

RIP.

On a personal level, RIP and God Bless His Family.

Politically- i question his motivations for backing the Armenian Genocide Bill with Pelosi. Big stain. Big big stain.

We need to remember that were, maybe are, democrats we disagree with on serious policy issues but who bring intelligence and humor and decency to the debate. Tom Lantos was one, Paddy Moynihan was another and Scoop Jackson was certainly a gentleman I am glad I had the honor to meet in my youth. Lantos was hated by the jihadis.

Interesting difference. Notice how civil and respectful the comments are from people on the “right” for someone who we totally disagreed with on almost everything. Compare this with the tasteless venom from the left when there is a loss or even serious health problem of someone they don’t like. Think about the horrible things said about Tony Snow who never hurt anybody.

But we are the mean spirited ones.

For awhile I didn’t like this guy until I heard that he was a holocust survivor and that he said that thing to Europe about Gitmo.

One thing I can’t understand though is why does so many Jews support socialism. That’s the very thing that nearly brought them to extinction by Hilter.

So when the last Holocaust survivor passes on, does that mean that the Holocaust never happened?

    Crapweasel,

Ask me tomorrow and I will tell you why most Jews are liberals/socialists.

The main reason is the Holocaust, but I would rather not elaborate on this thread.

The world lost a good man today. I did not share the political views of Rep. Lantos, but he was a good man all the same.

    Respectfully,
