When is it okay to wear a “Nigger” t-shirt?

Permission is granted…

1) When you’re a wealthy black rapper strutting down the red carpet at the Grammys, looking for some cheap publicity for your gawd-awful album of the same name.

2) When you’re the eptihet-screaming wife of above-mentioned rapper.

3) When you can give some nauseatingly p.c. rationalization for using a Forbidden Epithet by explaining that you are simply “reclaiming” the word for self-empowerment.

Hey, didn’t the NAACP “bury” the n-word last summer?

I agree with the commenters below: Kelis’s pants are the most obscene thing of all in that picture.

I am really offended that Americans ‘free speech’ can’t use that word. It’s just race hustling. I have always thought it was dumb to reduce racism down to a word.

Would you rather someone never say that word yet would never consider a black person as ‘equal citizen’ a non-racist? Or would you rather someone use that word and hang out and give opportunities to blacks?

I’ve always thought that the demonization of that word was a blight on our community. The demonization of the word is more of a blight than the use of the word. It’s a media thing. . . and a misunderstanding of the language thing.

That word was more descriptive than anything. People in the south used it not as derogatory, but as descriptive. They started changing it to ‘colored’ (as a descriptive term) and then that was offensive. . . then it was ‘black’ and that was offensive to many too – though it is still used often (black congressional caucus, black entertainment television). . . and now it is ‘african american’. But all of these terms including the N word serve to do the same thing. . . identify a group of people.

I never understood how saying ‘african american’ was any different than using the ‘n’ word because it means the same thing.

It’s all just race baiting and the white community falling all over itself to apologize for no real reason.

‘Africanized bees’ are generally considered dangerous and needing to be destroyed. Yet somehow ‘African American’ is less offensive? It does the same thing with language as the ‘N’ word, it describes a person.

The global outrage over a word has always confused me. I never cared whether anyone called me anything. That’s for them to do. I don’t understand why anyone else cares what people call them.

The reason the distinction of ‘Christian’ is important to me is because in the Bible it says ‘you will know them because they will bear My name’ ‘Christ’ians = followers of Christ.

Evangelical = evangel followers? It’s just Biblically wrong, inaccurate, and it’s as offensive to me as the ‘n’ word should be to ‘African Americans’. . . although ‘African Americans’ are mostly ‘evangelical’ (according to the press) too. Even though blacks weren’t generally included in the exit polls declaring the ‘evangelical vote’.

Thacker… this time I have to disagree with you. Christian and Evangelical Christians are NOT interchangeable words.

    Evangelical
capitalized : of, adhering to, or marked by fundamentalism :

    Fundamentalist
1 a often capitalized : a movement in 20th century Protestantism emphasizing the literally interpreted Bible as fundamental to Christian life and teaching b: the beliefs of this movement c: adherence to such beliefs
2: a movement or attitude stressing strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles

You can be a Christian without being an Evangelical OR a Fundamentalist.

3steps, but isn’t it fundamental to believe that Jesus is God?

So to be Christian, you have to believe that Jesus is God. So if you believe Jesus is God you would therefore be ‘evangelical’ which would include EVERY SINGLE CHRISTIAN (including Catholics) because to be a Christian you must believe that Jesus is God.

Muslims ‘believe’ in Jesus too. The difference is that they don’t believe that Jesus is God.

Evangelical is a poor descriptive term. To evangelize means to preach the Gospel. Every Christian would have to be ‘evangelical’ which makes the descriptive term of ‘evangelical’ irrelevant.

I am a Christian and I believe every word of the Bible.

The word should be used historically, but even in that context you find timid people on-camera using the incredibly childish phrase “the N-word”. Please don’t paint African Americans with such a broad brush when it comes to this word usage. It’s historical connotation provides the negativity that surrounds it. IMO, the word should remain just that… a part of history.

Nas could have created a different title (originally he had a different title in mind, IIRC).

The above picture is ironic considering that Nas has made some songs that encourage the empowerment and betterment of African Americans throughout the country.

I think I’ve relayed this before – but when I was in HS, I was a track athlete. I’m as Caucasian as they come. Another top runner from my state was not. We attended different schools – competed against each other – but were friends. One big invitational meet at Detroit Central HS – my friend/competitor and I went off to warm up together running through the neighborhoods. Here is this “white boy” running through neighborhoods where he is very much an outsider. The exact words coming from my friend as we ran around a playground on that Saturday are as follows : “Don’t worry ’bout the honky, he’s with the nigger”.
Did people find that set of words offensive? I didn’t, the kids in the neighborhood, nor did my friend. Only Dakine would – he’s a victim.

Agreed…. to evangelize means to preach the gospel. I don’t preach. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe.

I am a Christian and I do NOT believe every word of the Bible.

The bible was written by MEN. Not by God. Fundamentalists believe LITERALLY word for word. I once asked a Fundamentalist about Genesis. Specifically the Creation. And she assured me that God created the earth in 7 days. Ok… So I ask… how long is a day for God? 7 24 hour days she tells me… THAT’S WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS. Well frankly… I’ve read Genesis dozens of times.. I didn’t see 24 hour days in there anywhere.

That was however the beginning of the end of a long and close friendship. Shortly thereafter she explained to me that her Pastor told her she didn’t need friends like me. Only friends that were members of the same church. As only Fundamentalist Baptists are going to heaven. The rest of us heathen Protestants or heaven forbid Catholics were going to h311 because we didn’t take the book literally enough.

So… I’m guessing you are of the same mold as she. And I’m going to tell you the same thing I told her. Christian is as Christian does. And I’m sure I’ll see her in heaven.. although I’m sure she won’t see me. As obviously her heaven doesn’t include non-fundamentalists.

Not that I want to argue or thread-jack but:

    Genesis 1:5
God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

    Genesis 1:8
God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

    Genesis 1:13
And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

    Genesis 1:19
And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

    Genesis 1:23
And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

    Genesis 1:31
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

When was the last time there was evening and morning with MORE that 24 hours?

    I hope this helps.

And exactly how many blacks do you know – and I don’t mean know as in “the guy at the gas station you say hi to whenever you fill up” – I mean, people with whom you break bread regularly, or with whom you worship regularly? Decent, educated black folk disdain such language, no matter who is using it.

Galatians 3:28 says “There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.” If you are going to profess faith in our Lord and Savior, you might consider taking these words to heart before the next time you

It is no reach for me to believe GOD created everything in 6 literal days. It is more of a reach to believe that there are billions of different DNA chains and they all formed without any help (by random chance) in a few billion years to give us the variety of life (or even just the variety of differences in humans) we see today. Just a simple study of DNA puts “random chance” where it belongs – in the toilet.
