The Berkeley after-action report

The pro-Marines protesters came, saw, and conquered in Berkeley last night–despite massive chaos, anarchy, and police neglect. The City Council partially backed down–conceding it had erred in passing its obnoxious “unwelcome intruders” resolution and granting Code Pink special privileges. The SFChron reports that “some council members added that they felt they owed U.S. troops an apology as well the many Berkeley residents who were ashamed and offended by their position. ‘To err is human but to really screw up it takes the Berkeley City Council,’ said council member Gordon Wozniak. ‘We failed our city. We embarrassed our city.’”
But.
The council refused to officially apologize. And the troop-haters remain unrepentantly bigoted.

Protesters began gathering as early as Monday night outside City Hall in anticipation of the Tuesday night meeting. By Tuesday morning, some confrontations had become physical, and police in riot gear moved in to separate the groups. At its peak, 2,000 protesters had gathered outside City Hall, police said.
Three protesters were arrested for minor scuffles with other demonstrators - and a fourth for allegedly slapping a police officer - in what was one of the largest demonstrations in the city in years.
Tuesday evening, many demonstrators squeezed into the council chambers - some telling the council to stand firm, others urging the council to apologize for insulting the military and the men and women who are serving their country. The council allowed public testimony to continue into the early morning Wednesday before making a decision.
“Berkeley doesn’t speak for America,” said Eve Tidwell of Columbus, Ga., who flew into the Bay Area on Tuesday after watching news accounts of the uproar over the Marines in Berkeley. “If terror came to Berkeley, the Marines would come to protect the people here.”
The tireless Melanie Morgan of Move America Forward, who spearheaded the protests and backlash, shares details of the outrageous behavior of the Pinkos–and the Berkeley police force:
If I were a headline writer I would describe the situation as CHAOS AND ANARCHY IN BERKELEY today.
Not by our side –by the Marine haters and American traitors.
The cops were openly hostile toward the people who showed up at 5:00 a.m., never stepping in to protect the patriots from the assaults that took place against elderly folks, Gold Star parents, Blue Star families and Joe and Jane Citizen who were waving the flags and showing their pride in the Marines. The police allowed hundreds of Berkeley High School kids (accompanied by their teachers) to gather with CodePink, receive their mandatory face masks and F—k Bush t-shirts, and allowed them to mill around our PA where they tried to cut the power cords to the system.
Berkeley police repeatedly allowed CodePink to violate our permits, and never lifted a finger to stop their crowd from interfering with our activities until the very end, after we screamed blue bloody hell.
When Catherine Moy, the Executive Director of MAF called the police to tell them a riot was erupting in the early hours –THEY HUNG UP ON HER.
Cat called the Highway Patrol, who referred her back to the Berkeley police –WHO HUNG UP ON HER.
It was positively shameful….
…Move America Forward’s sound permit was turned off at 5:00 in the afternoon, while the Pinkos were allowed to use their system to sing Kumbaya and other 60’s peace chants.
Berkeley, the birthplace of free speech, is now officially the center of intolerant hatred for anyone who sticks up for the men and women who are fighting and dying to protect THEIR rights.
Before our sound system was nearly sabotaged, a young man posing as a pro-troop supporter asked to speak to the crowd. I allowed him to talk (about his family’s ‘service’)when he started spewing obscenities about the ‘illegal, immoral, unjust war’ . I grabbed the microphone back, and he tried to clobber me with it.
Gold Star Dad Mark Crowley knocked him to the ground, where he found a faceful of dirt to keep him company.
Our side sang God Bless America, America the beautiful and other stirring songs that seemed to enrage the elderly commies.
25,000 petitions were collected by Move America Forward with the help of other pro-troops groups like Gathering of Eagles, EaglesUp, Vets for Freedom and others.
There were Eagles EVERYWHERE today.
And Patriot Guard Riders.
And American Legion vets.
And members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
5,000 petition signatures were also collected by an organization in Washington headed by Nicholas Provenzano, who flew out to Berkeley on the red-eye to deliver to the City Council.
Red, White and Blue Americans rushed to our side from Atlanta, Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, San Diego, and other parts of the United States.
Our crowds numbered into the thousands throughout the day.
So gratifying. So humbling.
People of all ages, races, and political backgrounds (yes even some incensed liberals) honored our active duty service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in other parts around the world.
We spoke of the sacrifice and the nobility of the military families who support their sons and daughters, husbands and wives.
And we gave a HOOO-AWW especially to our Marines, who find themselves prevented from speaking while under assault, not from a evil enemy abroad, but from the insurgents here at home.
Melanie has sent a letter to the city attorney’s office about the treatment of the pro-troops demonstrators.

While a city has no constitutional obligation to provide police protection to the general public, if it does provide it to some groups, but then denies it selectively to a disfavored political group, that is a First Amendment violation. See Dwares v. City of New York, 985 F.2d 94 (2d Cir. 1993) (police violated First Amendment by allowing flag-burners to be assaulted, since the flag-burners alleged that those who assaulted them were assured by police that they would not be arrested unless they got “totally out of control,” and the assaults were so obvious that it gave rise to an inference that the police were acting selectively in denying the flag-burners police protection based on their offensive political views).
Where the heck is the ACLU, which claims to support the First Amendment? (We all know the answer)…

As a Marine vet, I wish I could have been there in Berkeley. Thanks to everyone who did show up to defend what’s right and to call Berkeley on their blatant disrespect and hypocrisy.
I watched the city Council meeting on the internet last night and it’s simply amazing how pathetic those people are out there. It seemed as though every few seconds all I could hear was “illegal war this, immoral war that”, but of course no dems got blasted for voting for the war. What else is new though?
So how did Medea Benjamin get home?
I think the great Marines should take the initiative to bring more recruits into the Berkley office. Heck, when the good men and women come into other offices - outside of Berkeley - to sign up, maybe the recruiters can ask them if they want to take a road trip to sign up in Berkley instead? Bet every one of them would say yes!
She does realize that in order to have a military that they have to RECRUIT, right? And as far as her opposing behavior…it’s HER leftard behavior being opposed now, dumba$$.
The two pics are BOTH of our side. The man with the pro marine sign and the woman with the clitoris sign.
She wrote on the sign “Keep your burka, I’ll keep my clitoris!!!!!!!!” That’s a reference of the Religion of Peace (Islam) practice of removing women’s clitorises. The woman with the sign wears a “USMC” sweatshirt. She does NOT wear a burka! Unlike the Archbishop of Cantebury she refuses to wear a burka!
The Berkeley Police Chief should resign and the city should be sued for their flagrant violation of their citizen’s civil rights.
One thing is for sure, Al Qaeda must be very proud of Berkeley, home of the traitor movement.
This should not go unpunished. It will definitely not be forgotten..
Bludgeon these misguided people to their senses with their own ridiculous rhetoric.
That means we can officially score one for the good guys - not a complete victory, but a satisfying one, nevertheless. Complete victory would have been a public apology by the BSC and the Berkeley police.
As Michelle says, take them where you can.

Since I gave up watching the MSM TV news about three decades ago, I have to ask…
is this outrage getting covered to the same degree as, say, the “pimping Chelsea” comment?
The only way to deal with this unequal protection under the law situation is to sue the City, the State and the police - and to name each and every one of those involved by name. In EEO suits, the government takes a third party position in most instances and this cause the individual sued to have to foot the bill for his or her own defense. I suspect that a federal civil rights lawsuit would mean that the City of Berkeley would pay to defend itself, but then each and every member of the City council and police force would have to hire their own lawyer - something that is very costly.

Thanks Michelle for the update … I was unable to follow things yesterday because I was involved at a personal level with our military.
As some here are aware I have raised 5 kids (4 daughters, 1 son) and have 4 grandchildren.
Yesterday, while these Berkeley idiots were once again showing their rears, I had the great honor of standing beside my 23 year old daughter as she took the oath and enlisted in the US Navy.
She came to me recently and said “Dad, I just can’t sit on the sidelines any longer. I have to do my part, just like you did.”
It was hard for this old Marine to hold back the tears of pride when she said that, as I have never emphasized my military service to my kids.
It was indeed a very proud moment yesterday, and I was honored that she wanted to be sure I was there to share it with her.
Fear not folks. We still have young people that understand and are willing to protect our way of life.

It is very gratifying to see so many people show up to support for our Marines. It is not the 60’s anymore and we won’t allow the traitors to mistreat our troops anymore. I wish I could have been there.
It is a dark day for Berkeley which people around the country are not going to forget. The shame of the police not supporting a citizen due to political leanings is appalling. There should be repercussions for that.

As a parent, I’m glad students came out to see a political rally. As a teacher, I am appalled by the report that high school students escorted by their teachers tried to vandalize equipment for MAF. The picture of the kid with the F–k Conservative Neo Nazis sign churned my stomach. I’m sure this kid thought it was cool to get to show off the F-word. Question: was his momma in the Code Pink line??? Did daddy know his masked adolescent was doing this? Go figure.

We have 4 girls and a boy as well. Our son is in Afghanistan and we have a daughter in the Coast Guard. Our youngest daughter is thinking Navy. Do I want them, to serve? You betcha! I sit here and read this and it breaks my heart. Many outstanding men and women put on the uniform of our country, ready to make the supreme sacrifice for us (and Berkly) while we sleep safe in our beds. The old hippies at Berkley and the old communist Medea especially are not worthy to tie the combat boots of those young Americans.
My first instinct when I see these communist protests is to take a fire hose and wash them off the streets. But I realize they have rights too.
The Berkley police are disgraceful. It’s no secret what side they are on. I wonder how many of them are former Marines.

As Katie said it’s great to see people showed up. I cannot fathom the mindset of these people (are they people or the mindset of our own resident trolls) but perhaps one day they’ll understand the error of their ways although I doubt it. I agree the police are a sad lot. I did have the honor of flipping off that idiot Col. Ann Wright though when we lived in HI. She was using the commissary and I made sure I told her exactly how I felt with my finger. She wanted the security people to through me out but they just laughed at her and told her I was just using my free speech rights as well that I had fought for myself. I agree completely! Some here have used the mantra, but regarding these people in Birkenstockly, I don’t/won’t believe them. They do not like the military or what it stands for. Navywife91, Fox news has been covering it pretty regularly and the reporterette has been pointing out where the code puke space is. One of the anchors told her to stand in it all day today! I believe that Greg Kelly is a member of the USMC reserved (I know he used to be a pilot) and he looked pretty upset but kept it in check.
Also forgot to add, I don’t buy that “support the troops not the war” garbage either. I don’t care who says it and how much they say they love the military and always they have “friends and family” who serve. With all due respect, I don’t buy it, will never buy it and hope one day that they grow up.

I guess I must have missed it on Fox, but that’s why I emphasized “network” (ABC,NBC,CBS). That sure would have been funny if someone brought her a lawn chair and a drink with an umbrella to enjoy while she waited for the Pinkos to show up. I try not to make broad generalizations because I can’t watch every channel. Frankly, I’m not suprised that it is on Fox because they tend to pick up on many of the stories the other guys ignore.

I never served myself, but my husband is a 10 year combat vet. I’ve spit shined boots, pressed uniforms, eaten MREs..gag, I helped study for boards (I still remember the definition of a M16A1). Nothing builds more character than serving in the military. Some of these morons on the left could use just a little of that. They don’t have half the character our young men and women in the armed forces do in their pinky fingers.
I’m a Navy vet myself, and my oldest niece just shipped out to Parris Island. It’s good to see people standing up to these Code Pinko freaks.

DeMint’s proposal to rescind some budget earmarks for Berkley. Perhaps all should be writing to their reps. calling for swift action?
Hillary Clinton didn’t send Code Pink a letter of complaint about them using the word Pimp to describe The American Military BUT she wants to be Commander and Chief and send the same Military into harms way? How come the Media isn’t asking the canidates their opinions about this situation?
Because many in the media are in lock-step with the Pinkos and if they didn’t have jobs sitting behind their newsdesks, they would be in the picture above, holding signs insulting our Marines.

I want to thank Melanie Morgan and Move America Forward for their continued stance against Berkley’s attitude toward the marines and the war in general. I agree with hatelibs and NavyWife about the whole “I support the troops but not the war” garbage. It’s convenient doublespeak at its finest and it shows up on both sides of the political spectrum.
As a military spouse myself, it literally hurts me to see how not only liberal nutjobs but even average, ordinary people ascribe to stuff like this. My sister is one of these dependent, crybaby liberals who knows nothing about the military and why it exists. I have no use for strangers or people in my own family who are nothing but military haters.
Be prepared for what’s to come, folks. This is only the beginning. My gut tells me that Obama is going to win on naive assertions of “hope” and “change” at the expense of the war and our military. There are a lot of people who think we spend too much money on the military, think it should be done away with, so that their entitlement freebies can be preserved.
I’m not looking forward to this day… I don’t trust politicians with our military as well as our money but I certainly distrust naive politicians even MORE with both precious commodities.

If Hillary Clinton can demand a news reporter be fired over the use of the phrase pimped out describing the use of Chelsea not describing Chelsea then…what about the Marines? Senator Clinton wants to be Leader Commander and Chief….how about Politicians? The City Council meeting was pretty stale all in all last nite. It was a travesty that vets and moms of fallen heroes and sheroes had to share time with the petulant twit Medea Benjamin looking on with their petty cue card sound byte bait in hand.
I have a meeting with one of the dissenting members of the Council today who voted against the letter campaign.
Will be interesting to hear his take on the police behavior.
Code Pink’s use of the high school kids is going to get some teachers in hot water.
This isn’t over on a number of levels.
And none bode well for the anarchist crowd.
As for the comment that Berkeley is a “political sewer”, I reject that comment on its face. Battles against the liberal fascists (Greens etc) are being waged here that do not receive press. And these battles are fought by good people of sound values.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. It’s good to kick over the rotten Berkeley log and see all the critters come scurrying out. These folks live in their tiny self-affirming world. It’s great to shine the big spotlight of publicity on them to their disadvantage. Keep that bright light on them. Make them defend their treasonous and hateful views. But most of all, make it un-fun to protest. Lefty convictions are bumper sticker thin. When opposed, they shrink away.

This is beyond words. We are trying to respond logically to illogical drivel. The fact is, Code Pink and all of it’s members hate the military whether through their own words, actions or through their association with this organization.
Code Pink does NOT want peace. Code Pink is not an organization of regular bored housewives wanting to make a difference in the world. It is made up of crazy liberal women who are on record for praising communist, aiding communists, and aiding and supporting terrorists. They hate the military. Plain and simple.
Berkeley City Council is guilty of all of the same stuff now that they have chosen to crawl into bed with Code Pink. Guilty by association and their apology means nothing. They can’t take it back. It’s too late.
What’s been said has been said. Until they put their actions where their mouthes are I don’t buy it. When they revoke the parking space, revoke the standing permit, and when they start arresting Code Pink when they break the law then I might think they have really come around. Until then it’s all a bunch of hot air they are blowing to cover their tracks — typical political doublespeak.
We can’t argue with Code Pink or Berkeley on their stances. It’s like arguing with a 3-year old about the theory of relativity. You can’t explain it to them in simple enough terms without doing a disservice, and they are incapable of understanding complex concepts (well even simple ones in this case).
I think that the patriot protesters did a great job yesterday demonstrating how adults who love freedom act.

Regarding the two photos, I think those are both “our side”. The girl is talking about people in the middle east performing forced circumcisions on girls, and forcing women to wear a burka.
In effect, she’s telling people that she will not submit to that ideology.

Let me correct you on the matter.
You do NOT support the people - the troops - if you do NOT support their freedom to choose to serve our great Nation. No one is forced to serve in the military. These men and women feel it is their duty to serve just as you (I would hope) felt it was your duty to serve Berkeley by running for office. Unless you have zoning laws already on the books to prevent this kind of tenent, LEAVE THEM ALONE and don’t give special treatment to Code Pink over any other group.
I do not understand why you cannot comprehend concepts like FREEDOM, CHOICE, and EQUAL TREATMENT.
Bear, am interested in what transpires at the meeting. I understand that there are good people out there and like you said, the kooks get the coverage. All 8 of my male cousins were in Viet Nam (I am the baby of the grandkids) and they all said that they went about their lives, did their duty, came home to being spat upon by “thoughtful liberals” who now run our colleges and government, got married, raised their kids and no one cared. But the spitters got all the coverage and were held up as heroes by our boneheaded media.
As others have said, the silence from our trolls and presidential candidates is deafening.

I have seen some protests in my time but this one is pathetic. Look at these kooks they have been reduced to protesting in their own fly speck of a town and still they are surrounded by adversaries. Awhile back these code pinkos tried a gas station protest, they showed up on bikes and tried to block the pumps. They got chased off you should have seen their faces as they fled. People don’t like it when they have to make a living and these loons are in the way. There are many loyal Americans on the front lines right here, we can’t all be bunkered up in the hills of Idaho you know.

I am one of the JFK/Johnson “Death Pimps”. A vietnam era vet in the Navy. I live downwind of the City of Berkeley and the recent stench has finally helped me conclude that the Califonia alimentary canal empties right directly into Berkeley.
The mayor claims to be a retired O3 (army Capt). Be nice to see his DD214. Probably a seperated malcontent or a real klutz that injured himself in training. But most likely another phony hero like John Kerry.
As for the Code Pinkos, it is amazing how they grimace and contort their faces when they are touched by anyone during their little demonstrations. Kinda like a football kicker trying to draw a “roughing the kicker penalty”. These people are totally phony through and through. Major pimps on the a$$ of mankind. They need to have their special (parking spot) privleges revoked.
