    You miss the point of language censorship. Such censorship does not stifle the ability of the speaker to express an idea. The words are not bleeped just because they are offensive or may make some people uncomfortable. They are bleeped so they are not considered (and hence become) acceptable speech. This is particularly true with exposure to children and teens.

    Garbage language is easy to get into the habit of using and can ‘slip out’ at inappropriate times. It is hard for someone who has filthy language ingrained in their speech habits to articulate well.

    As to showing violence, showing it is usually not an indication of condoning or accepting it. When it does encroach on being offensive, uncomfortable, or acceptable, then there are efforts to censor it.

    I agree, and coarse language has gone beyond just ‘slipping out’ at inappropriate times. In my commuting on LA’s Metrorail I routinely overhear teens conversing and regulary punctuting their dialog with the F-word and calling each other names, which, in my youth would have gotten my rear end paddled and my mouth washed out with soap.

    Can’t help but know that they pick this up by what they hear by the bad behavior of careless adults and reinfored by the equally careless media and simply think it permissable.

    Parents should be instilling the best in social behavior in their children with the educationsla establishement and media assisting in that effort.

    It seems to be turned just the other, thands to way in the gross misuse of “freedom of speech”.

    I have to agree with hawkeye54′s comments. I am proud to say that in my 25 years I have never heard my mother swear and I have only once heard my father swear (he said a quiet sh!t when he nearly lost a finger on the grinder in the garage.) That swearing is commonplace doesn’t change the fact that it’s wrong. Instead of looking the other way of excusing it, we need to try to change the way children are taught to look at such language. Although my husband does not swear too often, he is working very hard now to eliminate it from his vocabulary so that when we have kids he doesn’t have to worry about “slipping.”

    [Note: I hope that didn't all just sound like an "aren't I, my parents, and my husband fantastic" rant. I just use the examples I can immediately think of.]

    Yep – I remember all that from the early 70s.

    A few months ago on a newscast I watched poor Jessie from Fox News asking Jane Fonda (paraphrasing here) if she felt bad about the millions slaughtered in Cambodia and Vietnam after the communists took over.
    Her answer – surprise! – was (again, paraphrasing) that she was sorry that “we” (the U.S., ‘course) had created this situation in the first place.

    Once again, it is demonstrated that trying to arguing reasonably and logically with socialists/”progressives” – with individuals from “across the worldview divide” – is like trying to defend yourself at a witchcraft trial.

    And, in a more polite past, TV guests were reminded to watch their language (recall George Carlin’s 7 forbidden words routine?) before the red light went on. Just about everyone did remember to be careful about what they said publically while on TV.

    Nowadays, many public figures just don’t care or think about what comes out of their mouths when they are in front of any recording devise.

    More’s the pity that they, who should know better, lead the way in the downward spiral of civility.

     Not sure what this has to do with the topic at hand, but it is silly. I am sure you will not be surprised to hear I have many many issues with Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and the war in Iraq, but I think that folks who scream “war crime!” vis a vis those guys at the top of their lungs are as wrong as those who instinctively scream “treason!” or “sedition!” vis a vis war protesters.

     As for Jane, I admit that she and her actions in Vietnam are not of my generation, I really didn’t know much about the whole controversy until reading this site, so it is hard for me to get too worked up about her. But I understand why she would be so hated, especially by veterans and those of that time. But I guess that is my point. I think 95% of the anger here is being directed toward the actor, not the act. If it was just about anyone else that said what she did, I am not so sure MM, or the rest would care so much.

     I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. We all hold people we revile to a double standard and are quick to pounce on any misstep. For me its Hillary (Sorry Rusty. But I love your blog).
