Anarchy in Olympia…again
When last we visited the seditious hotbed of Olympia, Washington, anti-military zealots had caused $4,000 in damages to police cars and incurred more than $100,000 in costs after obstructing military shipments at the city port.
Well, anarchy reigns again, and you have to wonder how much longer law-abiding citizens there are going to tolerate the riot-friendly government and hapless police force (see the Olympian’s photo gallery here):
A hip-hop concert at The Evergreen State College ended in a riot early Friday in which a Thurston County sheriff’s patrol car was overturned and looted.
A campus police officer was dispatched around 1:30 a.m. following a report of a fight inside the College Recreation Center where the group Dead Prez was performing.
The female officer arrested a man inside the venue and placed him in the back of the patrol car. Some of the concertgoers were taunting and questioning the actions of the officer, said Trooper Brandy Kessler of the Washington State Patrol.
“They didn’t feel the arrest that was being made was fair,” she said.
The crowd continued to grow and became more aggressive.
“Some people blocked the police car that was trying to take the student away,” said Dan Hilden, a 20-year-old Evergreen student who attended the concert.
Concerned for her safety, the officer called for backup and the arrested man was eventually released. The officer took down his name and address so he will be summoned to court at a later time.
Thurston County Chief Criminal Deputy James Chamberlain said authorities made the right call in releasing the male because of the escalating unruly behavior of the crowd.
“It was a very volatile situation at one point, and I’m proud of the officers in how they responded,” Chamberlain said. “They backed out of there to try and de-escalate the situation instead of making more arrests and possibly making it worse.”
No. Appeasement is making it worse.

“No. Appeasement is making it worse.”
You beat me to it.
You’re absolutely correct.
I wonder if at this year’s socialist convention we’ll be seeing a replay of
the chaos at the 1968 socialist convention in Chicago.
Great! Won’t that just encurage the same kind of behavior next time?
AHHHH, we now have the answer to preventing crime. Release them but get their names first. Drive off and ignore.
I can’t wait to tell our Sheriff here he is doing it all wrong.
Lesson: Make a lot of noise and threaten to riot and get your way.
Works for muslims, works for Evergreen students.
Soap – any good fisherman will tell you that by practicing catch-and-release, you double the pleasure, since you can catch the same fish twice!
LOL cpodug. I will be sure to pass that on to our sheerrrruuffff! You know us rednecks, we love to fish!
Where is the F.B.I.??? Impeding the military and it’s ability to carry out it’s duties and destruction of military property is a federal offense. If these people were prosecuted and fined, this would stop.
I like the fact that The Olympian is using
HaloScan for comments in their news articles.
Poorly trained cops or very passive police dept. or both. Next time will be even more interesting, wonder if the cops will even show the next time there’s a sniff of trouble.
Political science class offered at Evergreen school…Nevile Chamberlain’s theory on ‘establishing peace with anarchists…give them their own way’
Well folks, this is what the world will look like if liberals reign supreme.
I’m sure the fine upstanding citizen gave the nice officer his real name
FEMALE S.W.A.T. members?! WTF?
So this is the SWAT deputy standing by her overturned car… Why does this seem… wrong.
I love a good prank. Just wait until I’m picked up and demand to be released. I’ll name my brothers, my dog, I’ll give them the name of my friends, etc.
There. That might work.
The city of Olympia, Washington must be auditioning for the “shot on location” tag line for the new movie “Jackass 3″.
Where in the heck are the real police like you see on “COPS”? Maybe we need to start putting cameras in their faces to get them to do something?
“Concerned for her safety…the man was eventually released”
Concerned for her safety? Ya know, honey, that Glock you have isn’t for looks.
It may be for looks, NBF. You’re taking for granted that they even issue their officers ammo to go in those sidearms.
Pull the trigger – break a nail. Tough call.
Yeah – we may be talking Barney Fife here. Who knows?
It’s the past appeasement that’s been breeding this, and the lack of hard enforcement here that will cause it to be repeated.
That being siad, though, I can’t fault the lone female officer for protecting her safety in this situation. If it were my wife, I could only hope for the same actions to keep her safe… but then call in a huge backup force to lay down the law (and for any law enforcement in Olympia reading this “lay down the law” doesn’t imply appeasement).

Dang!!
You beat me to it.
But, even Barney had ONE bullet, which he kept in his pocket, if I remember correctly.
No way! Barney would never let a prisoner go. He also would have no problem loading his 1 bullet and using it. It was Andy that kept Barney from loading up!
What are WE going to do about weak elected officials?
Why do WE keep voting for them?

Gates of Vienna……………….
Have great coverage of the ONLY country standing up to mob rule.
Before people go bashing the officer’s decision to back down, consider the circumstances. She was a lone, female officer in a (likely) underfunded campus police force. Even if she called in back-up from the rest of the campus police force, that would likely give them an even dozen officers, none of whom would likely have any kind of riot training or equipment. And, despite the high standard we hold our peace officers to, most keep their number one goal to end their shift in the same condition they started it. Unfortunately, with an underfunded police force, there isn’t a whole lot that could be done while keeping officer safety in mind.
As far as the offcier’s firearm goes: There are escalation of force rules for a reason. Can you imagine the fecal-storm that would rain down on an officer that used a firearm against a mob, even a rioting mob, when they had no firearms and she had the ability to leave?
Then again, I think we should nuke ‘em from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Western Washington is always trying to be like San Francisco. Mod rule is just another import. And we do it so well. Before the recent wave of Port riots in Olympia and Tacoma there was the WTO and Mardi Gras (where one young man was killed trying to protect a young woman as police stood by, under orders to no move in.)
What I wonder is, where are the leaders. The real leaders who will stand up to these criminals? Seattle has a new prosecutor. The state has an Attorney General who ran on a family-values platform. U.S. Attorney McKay was replaced. Yet it continues.
By the way, they hired that schmuck McKay to investigate the Port of Seattle’s wasting of $97 million dollars. I’m sure he’ll be as diligent about this investigation as he was about election fraud in the 2004 gubernatorial vote count. Looks like they’re sweeping that under the rug, too.
I’m ready to do something about it. And so are the crickets that I hear every time something like this happens.
The squealing wheels get released!!
A couple of well-placed .40’s would have shut them up and made a hole in the crowd.
They sound like a bunch of European ‘youths’. When did France overrun Olympia?
After living in WA state for a year in 91 I left. Thank GOD!
They were grabbing at deputies’ guns. They should have been shot.
I agree with #27. The first thug who failed to comply with a gun-pointing officer would not only deserve to be shot for his agression, but it would have sent the rest of them running, lest they be the next corpse.
Shouldn’t the cops at least break a sweat before they give up? Sure, the patrol car is completely trashed, but her uniform is good and clean, ready for inspection.
Probably just what they wanted… instead of “F_ the cops” it’d be:
the cops shoot one or more of the anarchists…Johnny Sutton is transfered to Washington and the cops end up in prison…that’s the way it works now days.
Was that James Chamberlain or Neville Chamberlain?
The cops coming in as back-up had to leave their car when it wouldn’t start. The rioters demolished it ($25,000) and stole stuff ($5,000). Couldn’t these cops have back away to a more secure location and aimed a few cameras at them?
These thugs CHASED THE COPS AWAY! Anyone else think that might embolden them to try it again?
Appeasement is stupid!
Compare that to this parody.
I’m proud of how they folded the flag and ran away,”[British Prime Minister Neville] Chamberlain said, “British troops evacuated mainland Europe to try and de-escalate the situation [with Germany] instead of standing up to their aggression and possibly making it worse.
Sounds like the British sailors that were captured by the Iranians in open water… Praised for inaction and cowardice. Must be a new trend.
Don’t be surprised when the citizenry steps in and fills the void left by the police.
I, for one, am long past being fed up with the militant liberals in this area.
Tick. Tock.
Where are the photos of the gut-shot rioters the sheriff’s deputy engaged while they were performing mayhem and destruction on her car?
So what is the lesson we are to take away from this? that if you intimidate the police enough and make a big enough stink that Anarchy truly can be the rule of the day? that law and order has no place in society? that rules are for other people and not for people who don’t believe in them?
I’m sorry, but does she not have a gun? Did she not have a car? Was she not in said car? They didn’t want to arrest any more people? What part of their job as police officers means that they are not supposed to arrest people that are breaking the law and intimidating and threatening law enforcement officers?
They just let this guy go, showing him that all he had to do was whine and he can get his way?
This Chief of Police needs to be thrown out on his butt. This city is entirely out of control, has completely lost it’s way as for how the Rule of Law is supposed to be mandated and how Civilised Society is to behave. The inmates are running the assylum and if ever there were two cities in this country that were more deserving of the holiday known as “Martial Law Day”, it is Berkeley and Olympia, Washington.
These two cities have demonstrated to the “N’th degree that Liberalism is a political ideology filled with hatred and violence at it’s core and has no place in civilised society.
Archon,
I think you misread the article. She called in backup from the county sheriff’s office. They responded, and had the thug in a squad car. Why not just drive through the mob? Once you’re in the car, and the criminal is in the car I don’t see a whole lot stopping them from taking the guy to jail… except cowardice on the part of law enforcement.
Jim C
From my reading, the campus police officer responded to the call of a fight and arrested the individual, placing him in the patrol car. When she attempted to drive away, the “natives grew restless”, blocking her way and getting to the razor’s edge of a full blown riot. Then the campus police officer, concerned for her safety, called in backup and the decision to release was made. I didn’t see anything about the backup being from county or university, so I made the safe guess that her fellow university officers were the ones to back her up (as has been the occasion at other campuses I have attended).
Then again, I’ve been in and out of meetings all day and could be entirely missing something. Stranger things have happened.
As far as this goes:
Can you imagine the outrage that would come about if one of “those imperialist militant officers of the police state” did something like that? The inquiry, the lawsuits, the very real threat of riots over such an incident…all things any police department, big or small, fears. While it may make us feel better to nurture thoughts of such things, it just doesn’t happen in a civilized society, even when the offenders behavior is decidedly uncivilized. And I would hardly call that cowardice on the part of the officers.
Don’t get me wrong. I am, in no way, defending the actions of those students. I fully believe that they should have met something akin to LAPD’s Metro Division’s riot squad and gotten knocked squarely on their liberal backsides. But without access to those kind of resources, I think the officers made the correct decision with regards to their OWN safety, both immediate and long term.
whats the dead giveaway that something bad is coming ?
Any news item starting out: “A hip-hop concert at Evergreen State College…”
Yes Barry F. How silly of me to forget that fine point. Both are called for.
There is just no excuse for the actions of the law Enforcement agencies of this town as of late. The fact that they are allowing the lawless to run amock through the city, allowing them to terrorize the decent, law abiding citizens while the men and women charged and sworn to uphold the law, to “Protect and to Serve” cower behind their desks, their cars and god knows what is unforgiveable. They should be ashamed to call themselves Law Enforcement.
i am sure that they have no trouble in hassling the local skate-doggies, from pulling over the cars who happen to be driving a couple of miles over the speed limit, but these graduates of the ‘Barney Fife School of Law Enforcement” turn yellow at the first sign of real trouble, when the law is truly being flaunted.
What exactly did they think the Riot Gear they were issued was for? the tear gas, pepper spray, helmets, shields, and guns are not just decoratioons for pictures at the local Policeman’s BBQ and picnic.
These are the front line of defense should something go down on a terrorist level in Olympia? This being a college town, you would think that they had all the other special training that we in fire and my brethren in Law Enforcement have in dealing with just such events. How can they justify this at all? In this day and age, to turn their backs, tuck their tails and run, then get patted on the back by their Chief as if it was all part of a Master Plan…as if this is something to be proud of…they are the laughing stock of Police agencies everywhere. When I presented this to my brother, a CHP officer, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Shame on this town. Shame on the Chief and shame on those members who bring discredit to their badge and the people everywhere who have dedicated their lives to upholding the laws of our country from the scum that attendied said concert.
Having been a police officer, I can’t fault her for doing what she did. Her supervisors did not have her back, so why risk your safety? I’ve been in situations where I did what I was told to do, made an arrest then had the same jerk that gave me the order take me prisoner, release them and take them back to the station to file a complaint. WTF? And.. that wasn’t the last time either.
Concurrently, my arrests dropped significantly! Soon down to zero! I was tied with several other guys for the lowest stats in the division. The only way you could get me to arrest you was if you jumped into my patrol car and woke me up.
Police officers will work as hard as you let them…
I do not fault the female officer per se…I fault the entire department, from the top on down. Of course if she was alone and had no back up and no one was coming to her aid, the name “Custer” does come to mind, and that is why the entire department is an embarrassment. The brass on down needs to be tossed out on their butts, pesions lost and the whole department restructured with officers and supervisors that understand and honor the oaths they take.
I won’t even go into the City Council members who allow such a Police Department to exist, allow such things to go on in their city and who actually seem proud that such things occur and welcome them to happen anytime, anyplace within their city limits.

How many students does it take to stop a police car traveling at 20 mph??
Something is terribly wrong in a society where law enforcement are more afraid of driving through a crowd of college students than they are of being run over by a pissed off police officer behind the wheel of their cruiser. Hello…??!!? Next time, put the pedal to the metal and I guarantee you that they’ll get their ass out of the way.
Do they need a Coonass to come up there & show em’ how it’s done?? lol
Yes, please!
I live north of Seattle. This so-called “college” is staffed by some of the worst Socialist and Communist professors in the country. The curriculum is OFF THE WALL, and the students are a grubby bunch of hippie type anarchists.
Surrender is a hard habit to break.
