How many students does it take to stop a police car traveling at 20 mph??

Something is terribly wrong in a society where law enforcement are more afraid of driving through a crowd of college students than they are of being run over by a pissed off police officer behind the wheel of their cruiser. Hello...??!!? Next time, put the pedal to the metal and I guarantee you that they'll get their ass out of the way.

Do they need a Coonass to come up there & show em' how it's done?? lol

I do not fault the female officer per se...I fault the entire department, from the top on down. Of course if she was alone and had no back up and no one was coming to her aid, the name "Custer" does come to mind, and that is why the entire department is an embarrassment. The brass on down needs to be tossed out on their butts, pesions lost and the whole department restructured with officers and supervisors that understand and honor the oaths they take.

I won't even go into the City Council members who allow such a Police Department to exist, allow such things to go on in their city and who actually seem proud that such things occur and welcome them to happen anytime, anyplace within their city limits.

Having been a police officer, I can't fault her for doing what she did. Her supervisors did not have her back, so why risk your safety? I've been in situations where I did what I was told to do, made an arrest then had the same jerk that gave me the order take me prisoner, release them and take them back to the station to file a complaint. WTF? And.. that wasn't the last time either.

Concurrently, my arrests dropped significantly! Soon down to zero! I was tied with several other guys for the lowest stats in the division. The only way you could get me to arrest you was if you jumped into my patrol car and woke me up.

Police officers will work as hard as you let them...

There is just no excuse for the actions of the law Enforcement agencies of this town as of late. The fact that they are allowing the lawless to run amock through the city, allowing them to terrorize the decent, law abiding citizens while the men and women charged and sworn to uphold the law, to "Protect and to Serve" cower behind their desks, their cars and god knows what is unforgiveable. They should be ashamed to call themselves Law Enforcement.

i am sure that they have no trouble in hassling the local skate-doggies, from pulling over the cars who happen to be driving a couple of miles over the speed limit, but these graduates of the 'Barney Fife School of Law Enforcement" turn yellow at the first sign of real trouble, when the law is truly being flaunted.

What exactly did they think the Riot Gear they were issued was for? the tear gas, pepper spray, helmets, shields, and guns are not just decoratioons for pictures at the local Policeman's BBQ and picnic.

These are the front line of defense should something go down on a terrorist level in Olympia? This being a college town, you would think that they had all the other special training that we in fire and my brethren in Law Enforcement have in dealing with just such events. How can they justify this at all? In this day and age, to turn their backs, tuck their tails and run, then get patted on the back by their Chief as if it was all part of a Master Plan...as if this is something to be proud of...they are the laughing stock of Police agencies everywhere. When I presented this to my brother, a CHP officer, he couldn't believe his eyes.

Shame on this town. Shame on the Chief and shame on those members who bring discredit to their badge and the people everywhere who have dedicated their lives to upholding the laws of our country from the scum that attendied said concert.

I think you misread the article. She called in backup from the county sheriff’s office. They responded, and had the thug in a squad car.

From my reading, the campus police officer responded to the call of a fight and arrested the individual, placing him in the patrol car. When she attempted to drive away, the "natives grew restless", blocking her way and getting to the razor's edge of a full blown riot. Then the campus police officer, concerned for her safety, called in backup and the decision to release was made. I didn't see anything about the backup being from county or university, so I made the safe guess that her fellow university officers were the ones to back her up (as has been the occasion at other campuses I have attended).

Then again, I've been in and out of meetings all day and could be entirely missing something. Stranger things have happened.

As far as this goes:

Once you’re in the car, and the criminal is in the car I don’t see a whole lot stopping them from taking the guy to jail… except cowardice on the part of law enforcement.

Can you imagine the outrage that would come about if one of "those imperialist militant officers of the police state" did something like that? The inquiry, the lawsuits, the very real threat of riots over such an incident...all things any police department, big or small, fears. While it may make us feel better to nurture thoughts of such things, it just doesn't happen in a civilized society, even when the offenders behavior is decidedly uncivilized. And I would hardly call that cowardice on the part of the officers.

Don't get me wrong. I am, in no way, defending the actions of those students. I fully believe that they should have met something akin to LAPD's Metro Division's riot squad and gotten knocked squarely on their liberal backsides. But without access to those kind of resources, I think the officers made the correct decision with regards to their OWN safety, both immediate and long term.

So what is the lesson we are to take away from this? that if you intimidate the police enough and make a big enough stink that Anarchy truly can be the rule of the day? that law and order has no place in society? that rules are for other people and not for people who don't believe in them?

I'm sorry, but does she not have a gun? Did she not have a car? Was she not in said car? They didn't want to arrest any more people? What part of their job as police officers means that they are not supposed to arrest people that are breaking the law and intimidating and threatening law enforcement officers?

They just let this guy go, showing him that all he had to do was whine and he can get his way?

This Chief of Police needs to be thrown out on his butt. This city is entirely out of control, has completely lost it's way as for how the Rule of Law is supposed to be mandated and how Civilised Society is to behave. The inmates are running the assylum and if ever there were two cities in this country that were more deserving of the holiday known as "Martial Law Day", it is Berkeley and Olympia, Washington.

These two cities have demonstrated to the "N'th degree that Liberalism is a political ideology filled with hatred and violence at it's core and has no place in civilised society.

This Chief of Police needs to be thrown out on his butt. This city is entirely out of control, has completely lost it’s way as for how the Rule of Law is supposed to be mandated and how Civilised Society is to behave. The inmates are running the assylum and if ever there were two cities in this country that were more deserving of the holiday known as “Martial Law Day”, it is Berkeley and Olympia, Washington.

These two cities have demonstrated to the “N’th degree that Liberalism is a political ideology filled with hatred and violence at it’s core and has no place in civilised society.
