Crash John Murtha’s party

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 18, 2008 02:09 PM

Erick at RedState puts out a call to those of you in the D.C. area who are up for a party with John Murtha. Pig costumes preferred, but optional:

Mark your calendar for February 27, 2008. You are invited to a party at the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City — the one next to the mall.

Now, it’s not our party. It’s John Murtha’s party…If you have a big pig outfit you can dress up in, so much the better.

Details on the shindig:

The annual payback dinner by defense contractors who benefit from earmarks by Democratic Rep. John Murtha, chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, will be held Feb. 27 at the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City in Virginia, across the Potomac from Washington.

Murtha, a close adviser of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is one of the leading earmarkers in Congress. The earmark recipients will be paying the $1,500 a person admission to “An Evening with Jack and Joyce Murtha.”

Although the dinner is timed to coincide with the anniversary of Murtha’s first special election to Congress in 1974, invitations for it were mailed just before the annual deadline for earmark applications.

Will Murtha cut and run again at the site of party crashers?

A reminder that Army vet and 9/11 survivor William Russell is challenging Murtha. More info at his campaign website.

This scum should never eat another peaceful meal in public again, let alone an earmark fund-raiser dinner for defense contractors at the Ritz.

How bout a Ritz cracker with some “murtha cold blood” on it?

Murtha is an earmarks HOG OF GARGANTUAN PROPORTIONS! Almost all of Johnstown and Cambria county are a freaking shrine to Mr. Murtha and his largess. Next to “Sheets” Byrd, Murtha can most definitely carry his weight when it comes to selling out to defense contractors.

Ironically, of course, he’s sold out to the highest bidder in private whilst he’s publicly rebuking our military and declaring unilateral defeat. What a stinking piece of work.

Not really. It is perfectly valid to point out that Murtha (as well as most of Congress, unfortunately) benefits personally from kickbacks from the recipients of his earmarks, and not just by having half of Pennsylvania named after him. And of course, demonstrating in protest of such activity is a one of the few remaining undiminished constitutional rights.

#15… Sure, it’s valid. Michelle and others have documented Murtha’s corruption quite well. Just… does name-calling and vilification have to be a routine part of the discourse? Sure, it’s fun. Sure, it gets the community riled up. But I wish our hostess would do less of it. Of course, that’s 100% IMHO. It’s a great blog, it’s her blog, and she has every right to run it the way she wants.

McCain will do away with pork like Ron Paul will fix the tax code. Both are business as usual hollow promises. Neither CAN go away as they are too big and there is not a politician on earth that can fix either problem. As long as people care more about American Idol than how their country is run, these are just hollow promises THAT SOUND REAL GOOD. McCain will not do away with pork - NO WAY, NO HOW.

Why can’t I hope that McCain will change? He’s done it before. He was against tax cuts before he was for them. He was against securing the border before he was for it. He thought Hillary would make a good President before he decided to run against her. Who’s to say he won’t change his past position on pork and now go against it. I can dream, can’t I?

Murtha is indeed the HOGZILLA in Congress these days.
The only thing that saved his bacon from being indicted in ABSCAM was that he did not take the bribe right then and there. He did, however, make it very clear in those recordings that he was available for sale to arab interests for the right price. In other words, what they were offering at the time was not enough. Kind of tells you that he not only had been through that drill before, but there were much larger dollars involved.

As for McCain making good on the promise to veto lard laden bills, I am not holding my breath. Although it would be interesting to hear the collective squeals from the porcine politicos when their slop schedule is interrupted. Now those squeals would be worthy of a Ned Beatty trophy…

He can no longer identify with the corp of fine men and women he unjustly accused. To The Corp, he should be labled a traitor of the first water.

Hopefully, he will soon be known as an ‘ex’ congressman as well.

Hannibal, I hope you’re right that McCain does not take earmarks. That would make it easier for me to vote for him. But I was refering to his efforts to stop others like Murtha and Byrd from taking earmarks. Earmarks have only increased while McCain has been in office. If he can form a gang of 14 to oppose his own party, why can’t he form a gang to oppose earmarks?

In recent speaches, McCain takes credit for reducing spending by opposing the Bridge to Nowhere and the Woodstock Museum. According to factcheck.org that is not true. McCain not only did not speak out against these earmarks at the time but he didn’t even show up to vote against them. And, as for reducing spending, every penny for the Bridge to Nowhere was given to Alaska to use as they saw fit to appease Sen. Stevens. So no money was saved! (I wonder if the Senate even knows or cares what Alaska spent our money on.)

Sen. McCain has promised to veto all earmarks if he is elected. I see that as a good sign and I hope he follows through with his promise. But I’m not going to hold my breath.

Since the members of Congress will never agree to term limits, it’s important for voters not to elect incumbents. Using the excuse that seniority and Washington beltway insider information is how things “get done” in Washington, current elected politicians no longer even care about the people they supposedly represent. Seems they all get corrupted (especially Murtha! How long’s he been there???). We need fresh ideas and new people who truly love this country. No incumbents.
