It’s hard out here for an illegal alien

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 19, 2008 01:02 PM

I wonder whether the Santa Cruz Sentinel has devoted as much time and space to telling the story of American workers hit hard by the economic slump:

Luis Valle eats a hard shell taco fast Monday afternoon at Taco Bell, his knee jerking up and down. It’s the first thing he’s eaten, he said, in 24 hours. Times are tough for the 27-year-old illegal immigrant and day laborer — an out-of-work farmworker who lives in Watsonville and gets jobs these days by standing outside the new Home Depot on 41st Avenue.

Carlos Rodriguez, an unemployed brother in arms, sits next to him, but he doesn’t eat his taco as fast. He’s more methodical. He’s also had better luck of late. He scored $40 for two hours of work cleaning up somebody’s back yard on Calabasas Road on Sunday. He’s still got the dirt beneath his nails to prove it.

But such great pay is rare, he admits.

“It’s probably because I was working on a Sunday,” joked Rodriguez, 28. “It’s something I shouldn’t have been doing.”

For the most part, Rodriguez says, he’s doing what hundreds of other day laborers are doing these days: Standing around and waiting for jobs in Santa Cruz instead of actually getting them. When times are good, their numbers are thick. By noon, most of them are long gone, snapped up by those who need them.

When times are bad, their numbers are equally thick, but they tend to stick around, the result of a labor shortage.

The slumping economy, the record number of home foreclosures, the lag in house sales and an idle construction industry aren’t just affecting middle-class Americans.
The bad times are trickling down to the lowest rung of the work force: the illegal labor pool, which has long been tapped by both contractors and homeowners for convenience and low cost.

And somewhere in Mexico a wife and a family are having a rougher go at it than usual. That’s because a large number of day laborers are single men who send their money back to Mexico via wire transfers — when they’ve got it to send back.

No worried, though, right? The $1.4 billion economic stimulus/border security package for Mexico from the US taxpayers will soon be on its way…

They need to spend that $1.4 Billion on inforcing the laws here. There is a 7-11 by my house where every morning there are between 40-60 day laborers hanging around the parking lot. All ICE would need to do is drive around in unmarked vans and collect them. They will climb right in, easy. Instead of arriving at a job site, the fenced in area is manned by immigration officers.

Excellent question. One of the problems the Romans had was that in their slave-based economy people who worked in trades like construction and agriculture were driven into hopeless, grinding poverty - because the availability of slaves kept free labor wages in a state of permanent depression.

I don’t usually buy into the “America-as-the-new-Rome” comparisons, but sometimes one has to wonder.

They aren’t here to fulfil the “American Dream”. They are here only to earn money they can’t earn in their own country. They send a large portion of what they earn back home instead of putting it into the US economy.

If you asked them, their “dream” probably would be not to remain here, but to own property and have money in the bank in their own country in which they would return to retire.

The only use most illegals have for the US is jobs and social services, of which they should have neither.

Yesterday the OC Register published an article about a new on-line video game called “ICED”.

The game, developed by New York-based human rights group Breakthrough, critically examines the U.S. immigration system and how newcomers on visas and green cards navigate its web of rules. Called “ICED,” for “I can end deportation,” the game, which was released online today, has five characters from different countries who try to avoid immigration officers and stay out of detention while seeking a path to U.S. citizenship.

“The video game emerged out of a desire to try and create something that was experiential – that enabled people to walk in the shoes of an immigrant,” said Mallika Dutt, Breakthrough’s executive director. “Our point is not to say we don’t have to come up with a fair solution to deal with the undocumented issue, but to remind everybody immigration policy is a bigger conversation about what kind of America we want to live in.”

The developers of “ICED” relied on research and feedback from immigration attorneys, detainees and New York City high school students to build the game. They did not consult with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which oversees U.S. detention and removal policies.

Heidi Boisvert, one of the game’s designers at Breakthrough, said “ICED” was meant to be a mix of fun and learning. The game, which can be downloaded free, will be distributed to schools in New York and immigrants’ rights groups, including several in Southern California.

Horacio Arroyo, an organizer at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said he plans to host a game night for the 100 high school and college students in the organization’s after-school programs so they can play and discuss the game.

It starts with the premise of amnesty. Why not avoid deportation by coming here legally and obeying our laws once you are here?

Gee, maybe the Mexican gov’t will sponsor version 2.0 of the game.

I think that is the whole point, there will be more Americans concerned about the illegal alien’s welfare, then their own country. They got abused coming across the border, they got exploited while they were here, they don’t make much, they send it home so someone can eat…and now they get discarded. Will America pressure country’s like Mexico to take care of it’s own citizens? Where in this chain above is the “Compassion” that I am always told about by people like Geraldo Rivera.

I have a whole different definition of Compassion - My definition, no one gets abused.

You need a “make my day” law in NC. That story of 2 stolen vehicles and a dead pet would have ended with the dead pet and 2 dead illegals. They start shooting on YOUR property, you take them down. Pure and simple. They want to play Pancho Villa, you play Pershing. They drew first blood.

In the NC I grew up up in, they’d have been shot.

because obeying laws doesn’t make them feel good. and we must not let them feel bad or experience any suffering. they are doing us all such a big favor taking jobs away from teenagers an lesser advantage legal citizens.
