I believe it was Michael Kinsley who quipped that a gaffe is when a politician tells the truth. In this case, it’s what happens when a Democrat politician’s wife says what a significant portion of the party’s base really believes.
You’ll note the immediate applause after she delivers the line.

My 95 year old black grandmother just died last month, and if she heard what Mrs. Obama said, she’d immediately pronounce her a fool.
My take is that Mrs. O thought that by saying what she said, she was repudiating any and all recent “Republican progress” over the last 25 years but she probably honestly forgot that it included the Clinton reign as well. Or if she did recall it included the Clinton golden years, she’d probably argue that “progress” was stymied because of a Republican congress.
But I wonder if Barack asked her later, “What? You weren’t proud to marry me??”

…as olympian pointed out, listen to the whole speech before you make silly comments. Politics being the game it is, she probably should’ve stated her thought differently, but any reasonably intelligent person knows what she meant in the overall context of the entire speech. I think it’s important to be just a little intellectually honest, especially when discussing individuals with whom you disagree on substance. If you want to be taken seriously that is.
…there’s a difference between criticizing a particular administration and making negative comments about your country. Guessing most of you will experience this phenomenon firsthand over at least the next four years during the Obama presidency. Paraphrasing Jefferson, “love your country, but distrust your government”. Make sense?
BTW Gabe, you crossed the line quite a while ago. Your ridiculous and unfounded comments regarding Obama are irresponsible, defamatory and not worthy of this site. Pretty high, but I will say that the public schools in Hawaii are just terrible. We actually got together a paid for a girls tuition at St.Elizabeth to get her out of the public schools. My nephews went to Damien.

I am sure most of the world’s socialist utopias would welcome them with open arms, as they would only strengthen their political ideology. How happy would they be in Cuba, Bolivia, Venezuela, Spain, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Angolia, and other places whose leadership they love and align with so much?

Patriotism isn’t being proud of your country unless it turns into something completely different either. That’s what you numbskulls don’t understand. I can name many, many things I’m proud that my country has done and how it has bettered itself, if you can’t, then plain and simply you are not patriotic, period.
Bottom line here is that in “certain company” this comment would not only be perfectly reasonable and accepted but some would even cheer….see her audience. It really doesn’t matter whether or not she means it.
Also, the video cut Michelle has posted here has been tampered with or it’s a bad recording. When I watched the C-Span video in it’s entriety the word “really” isn’t cut off like it is here.
It’s disappointing to see a high quality and quantity columnist, blogger and excellent contributor to Fox News like Michelle Malkin post this video without any context at all.
If your DUTY is to nitpick everything she says, you’re not doing a very good job of it by picking a single sentence out of a 30+ minute speech and ignoring the rest.
You might want to think about quitting your day job. I’m guessing her calendar is pretty full for the next couple months. And I’ll bet there’s a backlog of work for you to catch up on. Now get to work!

Because of BO? Where has hope been? And putting the farmer in Iowa in the same boat with people on the south side of Chicago is just pandering.
The glitch on the word really is just something that happens. If you have watched as many videos at Hot Air as I have, you would see plenty of audio burps. Now who is nit-picking?

Don’t be lazy. Watch the video. She said that we are a great nation because of how we assist poorer nations. If you watch this video in it’s entirety and come away saying she was dissing this country then you are dishonest. It’s obvious she wasn’t.

She knew exactly what she was saying…and it’s just what THAT audience wanted to hear, which is why she said it.

What did she mean exactly by … Barack has done well … Is she saying he has done well by passing lots of helpful bill in the Senate? Or, that he has made lots of money in private practice in addition to the perks as a Senator? Or, his fund raising, speech making and image as a healing savior is beyond her expectations? Or, that he has done well in getting her into a prospective first-lady position?
Fortunately, conservative talk radio host Mark Levin isn’t part of the mainstream media establishment, and on his program Monday, said what most press representatives would if they had any spine, and didn’t behave like shills for the Democrat Party.
“What do you mean for the first time in your adult life you’re proud of your country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because you think people are hungry for change? Have you suffered? Have you suffered, ma’am? I’m tired of people putting down this country. I’m tired of people pretending that this is still pre-slavery, pre-segregation, pre-internment. That we’re in a depression. I’m sick and tired of people ignoring the enormous progress we’ve made in this country and sacrifices one generation after another have made to make this a more perfect country. I did watch the video. I can pick that thing apart if I wanted to. I picked a few things I found lacking i.e. farmers in Iowa/SS Chicago persons, hope is making a comeback. I watched the clip you decided was tampered with. I posted some comments from the short clip that most people will watch. I haven’t enough time to poke holes in the entire speech. What I gain is BO is not the “hope” she proclaims him to be. I am not fooled by her speech. She does not speak for me or about me. My hope is not in BO (or McCain either). If this is what we have to hope for, we are doomed.

It’s like when Hillary Clinton said “I’ll take the oil company profits….” Every once in a while we see who they really are — who they will be when they govern — and we should all be scared as hell. A lot of folks watch Obama and see all this hope and optimism. I watch him and I see such transparent fiction that I truly cannot believe anyone is falling for it. His wife, with less experience in front of a mic, just isn’t as skilled at the charade as he is. She forgot, for just a moment, that they have a fictitious narrative going that they must adhere to until after Nov. 4. I’m sadly not surprised by Mrs. Obama’s statements. That said, I am prepared not to care as it is her husband who is running for President and not her.
Their collective lack of pride for the US (as demonstrated by refusal to salute the flag, raise hand over heart, etc.) is problematic for me. I may not like all aspects of a McCain candidacy, but at least I don’t have to worry about where his sentiments lie in regard to his nation of birth.

Michelle Obama is about 6 weeks older than I am. While she was at Princeton I was in the US Army, when she was at Harvard Law, I was at a State run university. There is much to be proud of in our country but as usual the ingrates can see nothing but darkness. She makes more money in a year than my husband will see in 3 or 4 years and more than I would see in 5.

I have listened to various points of view on tv and radio and have read this entire thread. I don’t need to listen to Mrs. Obama’s entire speech because that sentence says it all. She chose her words poorly. As an educated woman who seems to have everything in this world going for her, I suppose I expect more.

Why would we expect Obama to be proud of the USA? The Obama’s church of 20 years is a black separatist church pledging it’s allegiance to Africa first. When the silent majority stops putting up with this racial segregation and disharmony preached in many black churches we may be able to unite….as Americans. Not African-American, Latin-American, Asian-American, but united as AMERICANS!

There were many people that went to Ivy League Universities not based on merit nor academic achievement but rather based on racial preserences in the name of affirmative action and based on family connections.
In one of her interviews, MO noted that she was told by her friends and others that she did not have the grades to get into Princeton. If she did not have the grades, how do you suppose she got there?
As for metitocracy, MO was hired in her new position AFTER her husband became a US Senator. And the position she holds there of community outreach director is one of those jobs that are more oriented to “progressiveism” than to adding to the bottom line.
And finally. lest we forget, BO ingratiated himself into the Chigcago Dailey clan to launch his political career. Anyone who has any inkling about Chicago politics knows how that machine works, and how “opportunities” are created out of thin air based on the right political connections. Merit has nothing to do with it.

Michelle Robinson was an affirmative action admission. The stats–and her teachers–say she wasn’t as bright as many who were denied admission to Princeton, despite superior test scores. But she did marry well.
It would be instructive, for them, if lgm, Rusty & Olympia et al would change their residence to Zimbabwe or Laos or something similar. Anyone who feels our country is not working to better itself, is really not part of this country. They are the problem which needs to be made “better.”

Another point is that the USA armed forces never invaded North Vietnam and it only helped an alley at the time which was South Vietnam. During that war The US helped the South in fighting off a a Northern Aggression. If the opposite happened and the South Vietnamese invaded North Vietnam and trying to overthrow its communist regime I don’t think Hanoi would have put up with it or the rest of the liberal world.

Regarding Wisconsin, McCain’s nomination is already a fait accompli. Nothing was going to be decided for the CONS at the ballot box in Wisconsin, so a low turn-out is no suprise.
Hillary and Obama, on the other hand, have been fighting it out tooth-and-nail for the RAT nomination, so a high turn-out makes sense, given the stakes.
That has nothing to do with the point of contention on this thread, however. Your position on Michelle Obama’s remarks was untennable anyway. I don’t blame you for changing the subject.

That means your analysis is in error. Yet you cannot seem to find anything of substance that Soap has said that is in error.

Michelle Obama may be taking all the heat for her stupid gaffe, but I blame the MSM. The Obama’s are clearly not ready for prime time, but the MSM has allowed Obama to drone on about hope for six months without question. So they shouldn’t be surprised when it blows up in their face. It’s the press corps job to clear out the deadwood as early in the race as possible, but it hard to do that while waving a pennant.

Just a hint: I don’t mean to be the spelling/grammar police on the blog but you may want to actually self-edit before insinuating that Box or those that “disagree” with you are “less inteligent” or “less argumentative” as you. This assertion is idiotic… and, well troll-like.

At least be honest in your perspective. To say Michelle Obama is an innocent is to say Bill Clinton treated Monica Lewinsky like a daughter. You’ve insulted folks who disagree with you because their comments don’t fit your world view.
I also do not appreciate the comments of folks like lgm who treat this blog like a social experiment to see how many bloggers can get mad at him (or ignore him- his profile alone is enough of a turn off, sort of like Ms. Obama’s speech). BTW, my point was not that MO is an innocent. Sen. McCain is my candidate. I’m simply making the argument that this blog post and the comments that followed are in large part disingenuous and factually inaccurate. Also, Gabe’s comments regarding Obama and his ties to radical Islam are patently absurd, and frankly, embarrassing.
