What Barbara Jordan stood for

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 22, 2008 03:31 PM

Last night, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton invoked the late Texas congresswoman Barbara Jordan as a hero and mentor (transcript).

Jordan, a black Democrat who was a staunch advocate of immigration enforcement and border control, was a true maverick.

She didn’t just pay lip service to border security as all of today’s presidential candidates do. She meant what she said. If Clinton and Obama bothered to pay attention to what Jordan stood for, I highly doubt they would be so eager to wrap themselves in her legacy.

She stood for ending chain migration, ending the idiotic Diversity Visa Lottery program, and enforcing strict deportation policies not just for illegal aliens convicted of aggravated felonies and other crimes, but for all border/visa violators. She opposed welfare programs for illegal aliens. She pushed for real employer sanctions. She summed up what comprehensive immigration enforcement reform really looks like:

Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave.

Go read her full testimony to the House immigration committee in February 1995.

No way in hell she’d support Clinton or Obama (or McCain, for that matter) based on their open-borders records.

Meanwhile in Texas: Driver in fatal wreck is illegal immigrant, feds say

The driver of the truck that was involved in an accident that killed a Harris County sheriff’s deputy is an illegal immigrant from Mexico, federal authorities confirmed today.

Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Houston said they have placed an immigration hold on Jose Jesus Vieyra, who was charged with criminally negligent homicide this morning.

“There is an immigration detainer on him, and when the county turns him over to ICE when they’re done with the adjudication of their case, then we’ll put him in removal proceedings,” said John Gaudioso, deputy special agent in charge of the ICE office.

Vieyra, 56, is charged in connection with a collision that killed Deputy Craig Miller on Thursday night on a Katy Freeway access road. He is being held in the County Jail in lieu of $35,000 bail, said Capt. John Martin, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Miller, 43, was working undercover when the crash occurred shortly before 8 p.m., Martin said. He was a 20-year veteran of the department.

Authorities said Miller was traveling east on the access road along Interstate 10 West near Mason Road when Vieyra drove his truck out of a driveway at the Don McGill Toyota dealership.

Vieyra drove across three lanes into the path of the sport utility vehicle Miller was driving, Martin said. The SUV ran into the truck, became airborne and landed on a raised concrete embankment separating the feeder road from the Katy Freeway, Martin said.

Firefighters had to cut through the wreckage to get the deputy out. He died at the scene.

I just voted early voting today and two of the three issues were: require state and federal to do something about the border and another one was to require a photo ID to vote. Guess which way I voted?

I was at my local DMV yesterday and even though almost all of the casual conversation in the vicinity of my lobby chair was in Spanish, I was happy to at least see a DMV employee very patiently and resolutely tell a very brazen illegal alien (and his liberal enabler/translator) that he couldn’t, under any circumstances, get a TN driver’s license without being a legal resident.

    Small victory.

Barbara Jordan was a super fantastic LADY that I do not believe would have put up

her and try to make it seem that she thought the way they do.

I hate to say this because it’s so cynical, but the first words out of my mouth to the TV this morning was “I wonder what country he is from?” meaning the truck driver.

I’m sorry to say that I’m not surprised at the news of his legal status.

Jaded is right. They will use anyone to further their campaign. They could care less about Jordan’s position on anything. It’s about color. The democratic party has always “used” the black population for its own selfish ends, and will continue to do so, as long as people believe they are the “change” party. And, as far as that illegal alien is concerned, he’ll do some time, then get deported and be back across the border before ICE finishes the paperwork on him.

    Yeah but Michelle,
Like most meme’s from the left, it isn’t about what the person in question actually stood for or believed, it’s solely about how that particular politician, Clinton or Obama, views them.
Obama has been compared to JFK, except that JFK actually was for: a strong Executive Branch, an aggressive foreign policy, tax cuts across the board, & a strong military that supports allies w/ financial & militaristic support – see Vietnam.

The difference between Barbara Jordan and those two Marxist clowns who were riding on her name last night is simple:

She would have made a wonderful president, and would have erased the racist/sexist “guilt” today’s Dems are depending on in a single instant.

She had a brilliant mind and was inherently a class act. Obama and Clinton have some spooky kind of religious fervor and handlers, respectively.

You got that right, Michelle. Jordan was the first congresswoman (or -man) I ever voted for. She was very highly regarded across the board and LBJ was so impressed with her that he began to mentor her shortly before he died. Whatever one thinks of LBJ, he was one hell of a political operator and knew who was going places. Anyone who saw her at the impeachment hearing couldn’t be anything but impressed (the same place Fred Thompson came into the national eye). It’s too bad she became ill so early in her life.

However, late today officials said they learned that Vieyra had entered the country on a visitor’s visa, and they were working to determine his status.
