Thanks for the explanation. However, regardless of any explanation, I think most Americans on main street aren’t going to understand why a candidate for the United States of America refused to wear a flag lapel pin for… the United States of America. I think it’s going to be a real problem for Obama if he becomes the nominee. It’s just not something he’s going to be able to wiggle out of on main street. We’ll see.

Poetic, but I disagree. I think that many men have dishonored the flag, which is one of the reasons the uniforms worn by our troops are so respected by them and crimes commited while in them are taken so seriously.

Why would Obama go to Kenya and wear Somali clothes?

    This from wiki

The Somali constitution discourages the promotion and propagation of any religion other than Islam. This sets Somalis apart from their immediate African neighbours, many of whom are either Christians (particularly the Amhara people and others of Ethiopia and Kenya)

If he wore the pin, he’d be easier for him. No question about that. But I respect that he doesn’t bend on this issue simply for things to be easier on him. I respect that he can legitimately defend his reasoning. I think there are thosed that will be put off by this. Definitely. But given his likely opponent if he were to get the nomination, those people probably would vote Republican anyways. Obama’s not going to win the “who’s the bigger Patriot” contest against McCain.

He was in North-East Kenya in an area that bordered with Somali. Apparently, Somalian tribes reside there. They gave it to him as a gift. He put it on for them, as well as the other members of his group(such as General Gration - http://www.kruufm.com/files/87/scottgration.jpg)

Exactly, which is why I mentioned earlier that his decision to not wear the pin was orchestrated as a wink to the far left section of his base. It was definitely a wink and a nod that he is their guy…”I ain’t no flag wavin’, jingoist, gitmo tortuin’ rube!”

But now that he’s likely to get the nomination, I think he is going to come to regret that decision. He is going to get beat over the head with mercilessly with this. Most Americans are going to see this as inexcusable and shameful. But again, we’ll see.

I’ll try not to be “sensitive” or “personal” when I comment on your following opinions:

I think Obama’s response to the question of the pin was very true. He said that wearing the pin has become a substitute for Patriotism.

Obummer’s explanation is an excuse to wiggle out of the “real” reason he’s uncomfortable about wearing a “mere” pin. Will you say the same to my military husband when he wears a flag pin on his lapel pin to dinner or special events?

I agree with him(especially when it comes to flying the flag. People stick a flag on their door but never come out it to vote. It’s disgusting).

Again, general. Yes, there are two-faced Americans out there who say they support the military at the same time they’re discriminating against military spouses (my experience… I’m being specific). How exactly do you know that people who don’t vote fly a flag? Did you do a poll?

I think the idea that he was trying to promote can more clearly be seen with the cross. People wear the cross as a substitute for acting as real Christians. They wear the cross but never thank God. They wear the cross but look down on their neighbors. I think they do these things because at the end of the day, they look in the mirror and see that cross and think that they’ve been a good Christian.

Again…. general. Yes, there are hypocritical Christians. Many Americans believe in Christianity but don’t go to church, nor do they even wear a cross. People, shock!, even pray in times of turmoil, even if they haven’t gone to church. What gives you the right to judge others? To borrow a tired cliche: “let those who live in glass houses throw the first stone.”

Viewer alert: any slip into the “sensitive” or the “personal” was an accident and not meant to highlight mpChops’ propensity toward generalization.

How would you describe this phenomenon? Obviously you’re upset that I used a generality, but please explain why 92% of college students don’t ever take a foreign language class without.

You’re going to cite a poll to convince me of this? Perhaps, you should indict the programs of study or the schools as to why students don’t study another language. Perhaps, if a language isn’t part of a program of study, the student won’t take it. What is your point?

A poll is only ever as good as the data collected. When was the poll taken? Where was it taken? You do not cite these pieces of information.

How do you explain the many Americans living abroad right now? Should that percentage be higher or lower? How do you explain the linguists in the State Department, the US military, and the CIA? Any poll can be skewed to serve one’s needs. Again, I would have liked to have seen not only statistical information but even anecdotal… you know the actual reason why this “phenemonen” occurred.

Your example still doesn’t show an overall propensity for isolation or lack of adaptation on the part of Americans. It only demonstrates the trends in language study not overall adaptation or isolation.

One further note: where is the accounting for the second language speakers in domestic households? I do not see this either.

Isn’t this exactly what the election of the President should be about? Who is the biggest patriot?

When did ‘patriotism’ become an ugly word to the left? Or, if not ugly, something that has morale relativity so that it can be interpreted differently in every context.

Patriotism is defined as love and loyalty to one’s country. Shouldn’t the Presidency be a contest of patriotism and not a contest of globalism?

Of course it was black tribes people who sold people (their enemy) to the Arabs as well. Spend a night in Nairobi and you will hear the mosque loud speakers blaring all over the city. Yes, I know that not ALL Americans use the American Flag as a substitute for Patriotism, and not ALL Christians use the cross as a substitute for religiousness and you can’t teach ALL old dogs new tricks. You’re playing with semantics here and missing the point.

“What gives you the right to judge others?”

I have no idea where this is coming from. That’s EXACTLY what you, I, and everyone else on this thread have been doing all day. That was the purpose of the thread.

There are exceptions to everything, yes, but that’s understood. The general point is not negated by the exceptions.

For example, if I argue that crack is addicting, and you give me an example of someone that uses crack but isn’t addicted, that doesn’t disprove the statement that crack is addicting.

Your example still doesn’t show an overall propensity for isolation or lack of adaptation on the part of Americans. It only demonstrates the trends in language study not overall adaptation or isolation.

One further note: where is the accounting for the second language speakers in domestic households? I do not see this either.

My initial comment regarding this topic was concerning language, thus, I provided a statistic to demonstrate that. I never said or implied that Americans could not adapt, so I offered no support for that.

Ultimately, I’ve offered evidence that supports my view. Do you agree or disagree with the evidence, and if you disagree, do you have any evidence to support an opposing view?

When did ‘patriotism’ become an ugly word to the left?

That’s an interesting question. Hopefully my answer is clear enough.

I’ll start with the second one, because it’s relatively easier. Patriotism became an ugly word when those from the right started using it to insult those on the left that didn’t agree with them and their policies. If you didn’t support the war, even BEFORE the war, you were unpatriotic. If you didn’t support the various measures that Bush wanted approved, you were unpatriotic. It began to take the tone of a slur. It’s not an ugly word, per ce, but the use of it became very ugly.

Despite that, I agree that our President should be a patriot. No doubt about that. However, I don’t think there’s any candidate running for President who’s not a Patriot. From Ron Paul to Hillary Clinton, from McCain to Obama. I think they are all patriots. The reason why I say that Obama can’t win a battle of the biggest Patriot between McCain is simply because McCain is a decorated vetern of our armed forces. You really can’t be more of a patriot than that.

Because I think that they’re all Patriots, I think it’s a moot point.
