LOL
minuscule and blue that the world is such a horrible place.
Schweggie,
I should of been more clear. I’m not saying that their imperfections make them ineligible to wear the cross, but that they define their religiousness due to the fact that they wear it. I really do believe that the cross has ceased to represent a Christian as the wearer and is more often used as an accessory to an outfit. Personally, I think a diamond cross is an oxymoron.
Just as I think that those who’s actions really go against what the flag stands for shouldn’t wear it. If you don’t vote, you shouldn’t promote the flag. If you abuse the office that you’ve been democratically elected to, you shouldn’t be rocking the flag pin.
People use these symbols as a substite for the real thing. They use the cross as a substitute for real religiousness, and the flag for a substitute for real patriotism. I’ll go as far as to say people hide behind these symbols.
mpChops,
#163 the garb is “worn by Muslims and Christians in the region.”
99.99% of Somalis are Muslim. The 00.01% Christians are treated as 2nd class citizens.
#188 “it diminishes the symbol”
Sir, you are wrong, no man can diminish the US flag. But a man can reject the flag. Obama is that man.
emjem24, I wouldn’t have believed it, but I just compared the two pictures, and by golly you’re absolutely right! He even has the same expression on his face!
Emjem,
-www.ForeignPolicy.com
How would you describe this phenomenon? Obviously you’re upset that I used a generality, but please explain why 92% of college students don’t ever take a foreign language class without.
If I can take off my shoes in somebody else’s house if the host makes the polite request, surely guests can handle our “reasonable” customs and cultures when visiting ours.
Using that standard, mutual respect and common curtesy is a given that shouldn’t be glossed over quickly.
Thanks for the explanation. However, regardless of any explanation, I think most Americans on main street aren’t going to understand why a candidate for the United States of America refused to wear a flag lapel pin for… the United States of America. I think it’s going to be a real problem for Obama if he becomes the nominee. It’s just not something he’s going to be able to wiggle out of on main street. We’ll see.
#163 the garb is “worn by Muslims and Christians in the region.”
“Sir, you are wrong, no man can diminish the US flag.”
Poetic, but I disagree. I think that many men have dishonored the flag, which is one of the reasons the uniforms worn by our troops are so respected by them and crimes commited while in them are taken so seriously.
mpChops,
Why would Obama go to Kenya and wear Somali clothes?
This from wiki
Schweggie,
If he wore the pin, he’d be easier for him. No question about that. But I respect that he doesn’t bend on this issue simply for things to be easier on him. I respect that he can legitimately defend his reasoning. I think there are thosed that will be put off by this. Definitely. But given his likely opponent if he were to get the nomination, those people probably would vote Republican anyways. Obama’s not going to win the “who’s the bigger Patriot” contest against McCain.
No one is suggesting otherwise, for reasonable requests.
Wearing an islamic headscarf, at the request of an State Sponsor of Terror, is not a reasonable request. Sorry!
mpChops,
Why would Obama go to Kenya and wear Somali clothes?
He was in North-East Kenya in an area that bordered with Somali. Apparently, Somalian tribes reside there. They gave it to him as a gift. He put it on for them, as well as the other members of his group(such as General Gration – http://www.kruufm.com/files/87/scottgration.jpg)
Exactly, which is why I mentioned earlier that his decision to not wear the pin was orchestrated as a wink to the far left section of his base. It was definitely a wink and a nod that he is their guy…”I ain’t no flag wavin’, jingoist, gitmo tortuin’ rube!”
But now that he’s likely to get the nomination, I think he is going to come to regret that decision. He is going to get beat over the head with mercilessly with this. Most Americans are going to see this as inexcusable and shameful. But again, we’ll see.
mpChops:
I’ll try not to be “sensitive” or “personal” when I comment on your following opinions:
Obummer’s explanation is an excuse to wiggle out of the “real” reason he’s uncomfortable about wearing a “mere” pin. Will you say the same to my military husband when he wears a flag pin on his lapel pin to dinner or special events?
Again, general. Yes, there are two-faced Americans out there who say they support the military at the same time they’re discriminating against military spouses (my experience… I’m being specific). How exactly do you know that people who don’t vote fly a flag? Did you do a poll?
Again…. general. Yes, there are hypocritical Christians. Many Americans believe in Christianity but don’t go to church, nor do they even wear a cross. People, shock!, even pray in times of turmoil, even if they haven’t gone to church. What gives you the right to judge others? To borrow a tired cliche: “let those who live in glass houses throw the first stone.”
Viewer alert: any slip into the “sensitive” or the “personal” was an accident and not meant to highlight mpChops’ propensity toward generalization.
We go overseas and have to follow customs and rules, otherwise they get all upset and scream. They come over here, and we have to follow customs and rules, otherwise they get all upset and scream. The product of “touchy-feely” liberalism and political correctness.
General Gration is wearing traditional Somali dress? I swear that looks like a U.S. military uniform.
You’re going to cite a poll to convince me of this? Perhaps, you should indict the programs of study or the schools as to why students don’t study another language. Perhaps, if a language isn’t part of a program of study, the student won’t take it. What is your point?
A poll is only ever as good as the data collected. When was the poll taken? Where was it taken? You do not cite these pieces of information.
How do you explain the many Americans living abroad right now? Should that percentage be higher or lower? How do you explain the linguists in the State Department, the US military, and the CIA? Any poll can be skewed to serve one’s needs. Again, I would have liked to have seen not only statistical information but even anecdotal… you know the actual reason why this “phenemonen” occurred.
Your example still doesn’t show an overall propensity for isolation or lack of adaptation on the part of Americans. It only demonstrates the trends in language study not overall adaptation or isolation.
One further note: where is the accounting for the second language speakers in domestic households? I do not see this either.
None of the above. It’s still this one.
On an aesthetic note, pictures F & H would both be more pleasing if Hillary swapped places with Burka Barbie.
As I suspected, Rush has the audio HERE of the Delaware restaurant owner mentioned in earlier comment. Check it out, he’s goes on a great rant that got my blood racing anyway.
I’m taking this a bit out of context, but this brought up a related thought.
Isn’t this exactly what the election of the President should be about? Who is the biggest patriot?
When did ‘patriotism’ become an ugly word to the left? Or, if not ugly, something that has morale relativity so that it can be interpreted differently in every context.
Patriotism is defined as love and loyalty to one’s country. Shouldn’t the Presidency be a contest of patriotism and not a contest of globalism?
All. Without question, all.
Well, maybe the Indian one not so much, since I do not think anyone there felt it was insulting or demeaning nor was it meant to.
The hijab ones? American women should NEVER don that. Ever. It is a symbol of oppression and domination all it once.
I have those exact same bed sheets Obama is wearing at the top. Hmmm, well our textile and manufacturing base did move outside our country.
chops said:this picture of Obama was taken in Kenya. It’s not arabian clothing. It’s African.
OMG HE IS MUSLIM RUN AWAY
seriously? Talk about -Derangement syndrome, this sounds like muslim-derangement syndrome… everything even close to being muslim automatically makes it scary and going to attack us.
Polls – LOL
In our county (and I think in the entire state of Florida), all high school students HAVE to take two years of a foreign language to graduate. That equals 100%.
Maybe it is just me, but the fact that he was in Kenya visiting his cousin who IS TRYING TO FORCIBLY MAKE SHARIA the law of the land is far more important than the outfit he is wearing while doing so.
America1st#221,
I don’t think he is on the right side of the situation in Kenya.
I’m with ya. It does sound deranged. Especially since “el Busho” says “we all worship the same God”…
I guess that makes everyone in America Muslim (it at least makes Bush Muslim since he said it).
Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. He’s wrong.
Hey, in the very last photo with Mrs. Bush and the burka lady in black? Am I seeing a white ribbon which is a symbol of protest on violence against women?
http://whiteribbonday.wordpress.com/2007/11/14/how-embarrassing-attitudes-that-support-violence/
If figured it out! Obama is the one dressed like a girl.
Well, he doesn’t seem to know anything about rifles.
And isn’t that white ribbon on the burka lady in black a cry for help on the oppressive nature Islam has over women?
Same in our school district, thats probably why many do not take college foriegn language.
Don’t forget Prince Charles of Arabia.
With the Arch Bishop of Canterbury talking about Sharia law he may be Charles the Arab.
Let’s see, Obama dons the garb of the host country out of respect, but refuses to respect his own by not placing his hand over his heart during the National Anthem AND takes the flag pin off saying it is false patriotism.
He respects who more?
Definitely D & G. Why? Answer is in the saying: Fish starts rotting in the head first. You seem dubya took oath to protect the country that he and his family lives on. To protect the people who gave him that esteemed position. Yet, dubya turned around and sold that very country and those people to the biddrrs with a peso or a petro dollar. To one ho can see, all other photos added up do not stink as D & G.
That ‘cry for help’ either isn’t reaching Laura’s ears (thru the thick veil which is ment to stifle any cry or protest) or Laura is too engrossed to ’submit’ (pun intended) to the photo-op.
And now BBC has picked this up: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7263783.stm
Wow, according to our budding theologian Gabe we know the following about Sen. Obama:
…he’s not American.
…he’s not a Christian.
…he’s a closet Muslim.
…he’s a “sleeper” jihadist planted here to get elected President of the US and impose sharia law.
…he’s a terrorist.
Sounds like you have the story of the century on your hands there Gabe. Cue Twilight Zone music and give Gabe a tinfoil hat. Pretty embarrassing my man. As I said before, maybe trade a few of those degrees you claim to have for some common sense.
Emjem24,
Yes, I know that not ALL Americans use the American Flag as a substitute for Patriotism, and not ALL Christians use the cross as a substitute for religiousness and you can’t teach ALL old dogs new tricks. You’re playing with semantics here and missing the point.
“What gives you the right to judge others?”
I have no idea where this is coming from. That’s EXACTLY what you, I, and everyone else on this thread have been doing all day. That was the purpose of the thread.
There are exceptions to everything, yes, but that’s understood. The general point is not negated by the exceptions.
For example, if I argue that crack is addicting, and you give me an example of someone that uses crack but isn’t addicted, that doesn’t disprove the statement that crack is addicting.
My initial comment regarding this topic was concerning language, thus, I provided a statistic to demonstrate that. I never said or implied that Americans could not adapt, so I offered no support for that.
Ultimately, I’ve offered evidence that supports my view. Do you agree or disagree with the evidence, and if you disagree, do you have any evidence to support an opposing view?
Barack took the wrong stance. In the spirit of celebrating black history month, he should have brushed it off as culture & custom exposure.
Should have previewed.
“General Gration is wearing traditional Somali dress? I swear that looks like a U.S. military uniform.”
He said he also wore one, but I’m guessing no one wanted to take a picture of him.
“In our county (and I think in the entire state of Florida), all high school students HAVE to take two years of a foreign language to graduate. That equals 100%.
”
It may be true in your county, but not the entire state of Florida. Foreign language is not a requirement.
That’s an interesting question. Hopefully my answer is clear enough.
I’ll start with the second one, because it’s relatively easier. Patriotism became an ugly word when those from the right started using it to insult those on the left that didn’t agree with them and their policies. If you didn’t support the war, even BEFORE the war, you were unpatriotic. If you didn’t support the various measures that Bush wanted approved, you were unpatriotic. It began to take the tone of a slur. It’s not an ugly word, per ce, but the use of it became very ugly.
Despite that, I agree that our President should be a patriot. No doubt about that. However, I don’t think there’s any candidate running for President who’s not a Patriot. From Ron Paul to Hillary Clinton, from McCain to Obama. I think they are all patriots. The reason why I say that Obama can’t win a battle of the biggest Patriot between McCain is simply because McCain is a decorated vetern of our armed forces. You really can’t be more of a patriot than that.
Because I think that they’re all Patriots, I think it’s a moot point.

This over at littlegreenfootballs brings new meaning to BHO’s objection to the photos. And this man thinks he should be the POTUS????
Y’know, probably the last thing a guy with the name “Hussein” would be advised to do is dress up in Bin Laden-like gear. Unless he’s running for Grand Muckety-Muck of Somalia, of course.
