Isn’t this exactly what the election of the President should be about? Who is the biggest patriot?

When did ‘patriotism’ become an ugly word to the left?

That’s an interesting question. Hopefully my answer is clear enough.

I’ll start with the second one, because it’s relatively easier. Patriotism became an ugly word when those from the right started using it to insult those on the left that didn’t agree with them and their policies. If you didn’t support the war, even BEFORE the war, you were unpatriotic. If you didn’t support the various measures that Bush wanted approved, you were unpatriotic. It began to take the tone of a slur. It’s not an ugly word, per ce, but the use of it became very ugly.

Despite that, I agree that our President should be a patriot. No doubt about that. However, I don’t think there’s any candidate running for President who’s not a Patriot. From Ron Paul to Hillary Clinton, from McCain to Obama. I think they are all patriots. The reason why I say that Obama can’t win a battle of the biggest Patriot between McCain is simply because McCain is a decorated vetern of our armed forces. You really can’t be more of a patriot than that.

Because I think that they’re all Patriots, I think it’s a moot point.

Yes, I know that not ALL Americans use the American Flag as a substitute for Patriotism, and not ALL Christians use the cross as a substitute for religiousness and you can’t teach ALL old dogs new tricks. You’re playing with semantics here and missing the point.

I have no idea where this is coming from. That’s EXACTLY what you, I, and everyone else on this thread have been doing all day. That was the purpose of the thread.

There are exceptions to everything, yes, but that’s understood. The general point is not negated by the exceptions.

For example, if I argue that crack is addicting, and you give me an example of someone that uses crack but isn’t addicted, that doesn’t disprove the statement that crack is addicting.

Your example still doesn’t show an overall propensity for isolation or lack of adaptation on the part of Americans. It only demonstrates the trends in language study not overall adaptation or isolation.

One further note: where is the accounting for the second language speakers in domestic households? I do not see this either.

My initial comment regarding this topic was concerning language, thus, I provided a statistic to demonstrate that. I never said or implied that Americans could not adapt, so I offered no support for that.

Ultimately, I’ve offered evidence that supports my view. Do you agree or disagree with the evidence, and if you disagree, do you have any evidence to support an opposing view?
