15 years: The World Trade Center bombing

Did you remember? It has been 15 years since the first World Trade Center bombing. So many were snoozing then. So many are still snoozing now.
Honor the victims:
9/11 must be viewed in the context of many other dates in addition to February 26, 1993. These dates include June 25, 1998; March 11, 2004; and July 7, 2005, when other Al-Qaeda perpetrated or linked attacks took place. The innocent people who worked at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, rode the train in Madrid or boarded a bus in London were, like the victims of 1993 and 2001, simply leading everyday lives.
Bearing witness to the attacks of 1993 and 2001 and their connection to events around the world is to choose knowledge over ignorance and fear. Isolating or disregarding these indefensible crimes minimizes our understanding of the world and heightens our risk within it.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum will imbue our visitors with the essential truth that the victims of the attacks could have been any one of us. In doing so we hope to reinforce the universal human connections that make it harder for attacks like these to happen again.
By remembering the victims, perhaps particularly when we didn’t personally know them, we eclipse the terrorists who sought to dehumanize the innocent and use murder as a weapon for a destructive ideology. In contrast to the fear and division which the terrorists sought to achieve, we show our deep respect for individual life that is at the core of our free society.
Today as we go about our everyday lives — riding the subway, taking the bus, or having lunch with a co-worker, please take a moment to remember those who were simply going about their everyday lives when they were taken from us in 1993 – — John DiGiovanni, Robert Kirkpatrick, Stephen A. Knapp, William Macko, Wilfredo Mercado, and Monica Rodriguez Smith. By doing so, “we protest,” as memorial scholar Ed Linenthal has said, “against the anonymity of mass death in our time.” Let’s ensure their memory is preserved with purpose.
One of the convicted bombers is still pursuing his court case:
Fifteen years after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, a Palestinian sentenced to more than 100 years in prison in the attack claims that a vengeful U.S. government has blocked him from appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Ahmad Mohammed Ajaj, who remains in extreme isolation in the nation’s most secure prison, filed a lawsuit last year in U.S. District Court in Manhattan against more than a dozen judges, federal court employees, Bureau of Prisons officials and his former defense lawyer Maranda Fritz.
He said they failed to notify him of appeals court rulings and blocked his access to what he would need for a Supreme Court appeal of his conviction on conspiracy charges in the Feb. 26, 1993, bombing, which killed six people and injured more than 1,000 others.
In court documents filed last week, government lawyers said Ajaj has no right to bring the claims against court personnel.
I ran this video on last year’s anniversary: Remember what it was like on “Top of the World?”

Andy McCarthy’s coming out with an important memoir:
Fifteen years ago this coming Tuesday, February 26, 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed. The story of how we got to that point is central to my book, Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad, which will be published by Encounter Books in a few weeks.
An article derived from the book, “When Jihad Came to America,” is being featured by our good (and unbelievably gracious) friends at Commentary Magazine this week.
Read it here.

Debbie Schlussel remembers.
Are Americans as safe today as they were before Congress allowed the Protect America Act to expire on Feb. 16?
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats say we are. They go so far as to say that the Protect America Act — put in place last year to overcome obstacles in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that make it harder to intercept terrorist communications — was not even necessary. In the Washington Post yesterday, Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Patrick Leahy, and Reps. Silvestre Reyes and John Conyers, wrote that our intelligence agencies can collect all the intelligence they need under FISA.
That is simply false. We are less safe today and will remain so until Congress clears up the legal uncertainty for companies that assist in collecting intelligence for the government — and until it gives explicit permission to our intelligence agencies to intercept, without a warrant, foreign communications that pass through the U.S…
…Further extending the Protect America Act is no way to fight a war against a determined enemy that uses our infrastructure against us. We need a long-term fix for FISA; and that is what a bipartisan majority in the Senate tried to accomplish earlier this month when it passed its FISA modernization bill by a 68-29 margin.
The problem is in the House, where Democratic leaders prefer to play an obstructionist role instead of constructing the architecture we need to fight an intelligence-driven war. Instead of voting on the Senate bill, even though a majority of House members stand ready to pass it, Mrs. Pelosi is still sitting on it. She is now pushing for a “compromise” that would gut many of the provisions that secure the cooperation of telecommunications companies.
Our troops collect intelligence in Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis. We must exploit quickly the leads they turn up. Court orders should not be necessary to engage foreign targets in foreign countries. The Senate bill must be allowed to come to a vote in the House of Representatives without further delay.

I would go back even further.
The Olympics at Munich, Leon Klinghoffer, Panam 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, etc.
We were blind for so long, and half of America is still blind.

How many Democtats, refusing to pass the FISA bill, will show up for one single memorial for this or any other act of muslim terriorist attack on our counrty? If they do, it will be for a photo opt only. They care, you know.

Beirut.
Don’t forget my fellow Marines. I lost a friend there.
In other words, the time for pandering, “hoping,” and appeasing is over. It is now time to root out, hunt down, and eliminate those who are bent on our destruction.
Semper Fi!
Thank you!
We must never forget.
Passing FISA or go to wedding? Hmm, hard choice.

As I wrote yesterday and in my column on the ‘93 WTC bombing today, there are law students and 3 terrorists who perpetrated the ‘93 WTC fighting for their “right” to spread Jihad.
I didn’t forget Beirut: Here.
.
Great column, Debbie.
On a related note:
Moussaoui Challenges Court Secrecy Rules
“In newly filed court documents, Moussaoui argues that court-imposed secrecy undermined his ability to present an adequate defense. His new lawyers say Moussaoui’s guilty plea should be thrown out and a new trial should be convened for the man who once claimed to have been a part of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist plot.”
Michelle, I know you haven’t forgotten. I remember the post. You of all people have been vigilant to every detail. I was merely adding to the list.
I believe I can speak for everyone here (but a few trolls) when I say Thanks!
Interestingly, NIST still hasn’t released official findings regarding WTC 7 and why it collapsed at free fall speed.
There’s also still no explanation for how WTC 1 & 2 fell into their respective foundations at free fall speeds, from a physics and metallurgical perspective. Both the 9/11 commission and NIST report don’t address it.
I’m intrigued by a video showing incandescent molten steel pouring from the corner of the building just prior to the upper floors collapse. I’ve got a metallurgical background so I understand a wee bit about the process. There were no materials or means present to liquefy steel, (in excess of 2,700 F) so the question remains: what material was present to cause this melting? Jet fuel, aluminium or other combustibles can’t produce such extreme amounts of energy. Having seen firsthand the metallurgical use of thermite for ore reduction whereby Thremite reduced a huge crucible of metal-bearing ore into a cauldron of boiling metal in mere seconds, the theory that thermite was used to cut the steel beams is highly plausible.
The question is just who was snoozing then but who is snoozing now and continues to do so?
So you’re a “truther”, MeatPie?
And fifteen years later, we still don’t know who Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of this gang of terror-happy but incompetent dopes who made and planted the bomb, worked for. It wasn’t Al Qaeda. They recruited him after he went on the run for this act. Who trained him? Who told him how to find the numbskulls who wanted to blow something up but didn’t know how? There is a lot we don’t know even to this day. A little waterboarding might have done the trick.
Please don’t disrepect them with that conspiracy BS.
peep, some folks are just plain stupid.
That was a rather ridiculous statement. I’m in agreement with Milwaukee. Honor the victims save that crap for another time.
I’m not no physicist or chemist or forensic guy (just a grad of elementary school, reform school, and jump school), but I do remember something about Force = Mass X Acceleration (so, greater and greater mass and acceleration as a Tower falls). Free Fall velocities? Don’t know if terminal velocity of a building free fall (125mph) can be reached within a space of the height of the WTC (1200 feet, which by the way is the altitude of a standard military training jump. If parachute doesn’t open then splat, perhaps at terminal velocity. Thank God I never had to test that.). Also, did not the collapse begin well below the top floor (i.e. 1200 feet). To exceed normal effect of gravity (in excess of 125mph if that could be attained in the altitude or space being dealt with), explosives had to be used to blow downward to attain greater than “free fall speed”? What for? That doesn’t make sense. I mean wasn’t 125mph (if it was attained) enough without an “accelerator” (not a combustion accelerator). If such “accelerative explosives/charges” were used, they’d just blow holes in the floors.
Lastly, shouldn’t have someone done by now a spectrographic analysis of film of the collapses to show any “foreign” compounds, such as thermite? Can such analysis be done off of a video film? Just asking.
No kidding. I remember taking an internal flight in America in the early 1990s and being flabbergasted by the lax airport security.
Especially coming from England where terrorism was part of life (IRA) – we were always told to keep a look out for “packages” left unattended.
Then 9/11 happened and snoozing America woke up – terrorism had finally (sadly) reached the shores of America.
Echoing the late arrival to World War 2, it’s a shame it took a direct strike to the country before America finally reacted….
We need some sort of cresent shaped memorial
…and my apologies for any disrespect for the timing and content of my above reply on this date of additional infamy.
Unfortunately, people do forget, and sooner than one might think. Every April 19 I wear clothes with flags on them. Even people here in Oklahoma City wonder why I do it. They’ve forgotten what happened on April 19, 1995 at 9:02am.
So, people just return to their lives after a year or two.

The same goes for the 4th and flag day, but I live in a liberal place now. The town I grew up in still puts up flags and celebrates.
Actually, our history with acts of terrorism goes back further than the 1980’s or even the 1970’s.
In June of 1968, a Palestinian arab named Sirhan Sirhan was accused and later convicted of killing Robert F. Kennedy. At the time, his defense team used the fact that Sirhan’s hatred of jews made him “psychotic”, and when he saw that RFK was supporting Israel, it pushed him over the edge. In the 1960’s, no one would believe that such hatred could serve as the basis to commit a crime like murder unless the person was insane. Amazingly, 40 years later, there are more than a few people in this country who continue to harbor those beliefs.
Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Thanks for the reminder Michelle, I didn’t realize today was Feb.26th. The cable news channels were to busy talking about Starbucks closing for 3 hrs. today to mention the anniversary.
I hope Ramzi Yousef rots in prison then burns in hell.
Thanks for these reminders Michelle. We must never forget.
On Sept. 11, 2001 I had in my posession 3 small American Flags (among others). I have had one displayed on the inside of my front storm door and one lying on the dashboards of each vehicle since 9:30AM central time that day. Yes they are faded but they will remain up until they need retired, then they will be replaced and those will remain up and be retired as needed until I die. Why display our Flag like this? If an islamic terrorist is looking to attack an American, they will know where to find me. I’ll be waiting.
The big ticket item that everybody is forgetting is the Clinton administration’s lethargic and politcally correct response to the 1993 WTC bombings. From the beginning, AG Janet Reno took the position that the bombing was strictly a law enforcement matter. The little fish were rounded up and prosecuted. Janet Reno kept saying that if “we find the perpetrators who did this” and “can prove beyond a reasomable doubt” that they were involved, we will seek them out and prosecute them in a US District Court. Reno was telegraphing the Clinton administration’s view that this was not state sponsored terrorism and the administration would not punish any country that harbored terrorists. The administration looked no farther than the little minnows that the FBI quickly found. It was absurd that the schnooks who were arrested and prosecuted could have planned the whole thing. Obviously, Al Queda was involved. Ramsi Yousef, who was eventually caught, was related in some way to one of the 9/11 hijackers. But the Clinton administration didn’t look. Clinton had the same reaction to Khobar Towers and to the bombing of the US Cole. This is a hint of what awaits when Obama or Hillary ascends to the White House. Does anybody still see no difference between John McCain and his two sensitive Democratic opponents?
“Please don’t feed the Truther Trolls”
Yeah, well when we *do* react, we’re at fault. We’re the big, bad capitalistic, empiralistic bully picking on the poor, impoverished “freedom fighters.”
While I agree with your post, sausage, you forget there is a strong and vocal contingent who think America (and the 3,000 people who died on 9/11) deserved what we got and long to see us suffer more.
And those are the people so content to snooze that they’ll sleep right to their own deaths…
I was in Saudi Arabia, on October 23, 1983. I’d been there about 6 months and was still trying to figure get a grip on the middle east “experience”. However, on that day, as I watched senior officers of the Saudi military, and Saudis, who had been educated at Harvard, smiling like cheshire cats, because Americans had been killed, I understood.
I spent another two and a half years there. Reading the most outlandish anti-American editorials in the English language Arab papers. Reading the Quran. Talking to mutawas and educated Saudis about islam.
I missed a flight from Jedda to Riyadh, which turned out to be fortuitous. It was hijacked. Two months before I left Saudi Arabia for good, a terrorist killed three people in the Ministry of Defense building. I’d been there often to repair computer equipment. I saw the blood on the walls the next day when I was there. I witnessed islamic terrorism. I saw it up close, and knew it was a real, bona fide threat to my country.
Yet, my country seemed ignorant. I watched Reagan cut and run from Lebanon. I watched Clinton cut and run from Somalia. I watched numerous other vile acts of terror being ignored by the US, and the West. Americans were being targeted and killed. Yet, time after time, only weakness, platitudes, and running away was all the US could do in response.
The weak in our country want to go back to that attitude. Both the democrats and the republicans. Unfortunately, we will learn an even harder lesson than the WTC, if they persist with their weakness.
There is an islamic wolf at our door, and we are blinded by self absorbed ignorance. We don’t even see it.
April 19th 1775, Lexington, and Concord. Where are people like that now, except the military.
According to the first black POTUS, that was not a terrorist act. It was just a crime.
We are being led by children.
Not to worry folks, I suspect that the democrap candidates have made a deal with the terrorists [advisers to Syria for meetings] – no attacks and you can have Iraq and Afganistan by the end of Jan 2009 – seem strange, nope, quite reasonable for a party that is dedicated to US defeat.
Wake up America. Honor the victims by accepting the truth. New study released today shows 3 of 4 American Mosques are preaching jihad and have become radicalized.
Troofers Forgotten.
If the Dhimmis win in November, America is doomed.
Don’t forget Israel gandolphxx, I’m sure they’ll hand over our allies there too.
Thanks, Michelle. No, I have forgotten, nor will I. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten. They go on with their daily lives, more interested in who’s hot in the music charts, and who’s competing on American Idol than what is happening outside their front door. The lack of understanding of the world and this country, puts them in a position where they have to be “moral” about things, rather than logical and rational. It’s an automatic response. Politicians thrive on that response…always have. In the House today, we have democrats in a bit of a dilemma. Do they support American security or continue their anti-business and anti-capitalist platform? They will go with the “moral” response and be anti-business first.
I remember going there when I was a kid on a trip with my parents. I was soooo excited as we actually got to eat at “Windows on the World”. I was thrilled to be going to such a grown up place as well. I am afraid that most people have forgotten and in truth, I had forgotten that the first attack was 15 years ago.
Tim, I fear you’re right about America being doomed.
Last night I chanced upon Depeche Mode performing Enjoy The Silence atop WTC building. Lovely and very eerie. As usual on YouTube, the comments section draws out the best and the worst.
Oh, and how about knocking it off with the “wake up” comments. Don’t confuse trying hard to work out how to deal with these irrational things and still maintain our so-called civil liberties with being asleep. It’s not just offensive, it’s stupid and wrong. When I read a “wake up” comment, I skip ahead to the next post with the certainty that whatever followed is just as idiotic.

The America I grew up in, and am/was so fond/respectful of, has already died, sad to say.
As to whether we are doomed, we – all of us, as a nation – ultimately will have to actively wage total war against our foreign enemies, if “only” for us simply to survive.
As for our domestic enemies (and, again, sad to say, I believe they are in fact enemies), at present, our culture war is a nonshooting civil war.
If the situation should get to the point that our very survival is at stake, how long will our culture war stay “cold”?
According to Rollingstone Magazine the Surge is a Myth…not working. I was watching a Fox reporter on Fox News and she was in Anbar Province it sure looked peaceful when they were filming?

Thank you, Mr. Daniels, for reminding us of what happened before America rolled over and went back to sleep for eight more years.
The first attack should have been the wake up call, but Bubba Clinton was too immersed in Chinese money, stolen FBI files, and Monika’s mouth-to-crotch resuscitation to care.
NEVER FORGET
Duty Honor Country
Oh, and note to bour3:
I apply the “wake up” concept to idiots who think 9/11 was a fluke or worse, a “gummint” conspiracy, instead of a well coordinated plot by Islamofascist swine who finally succeeded the second time around.
Okay, you may now “skip to ahead to the next post with the certainty that whatever follows is just as idiotic”.
Happy now?
sfemac,
Well written. However, I never really minded Bill getting a cleaning from Monika.
What does bother me is the Ms-13 types, and the moon god worshiping POS that have gotten into this country. I do not think they plan for good.
That is why I keep my weapons clean, and polish on my boots. You never know when you might have to saddle up.
BZO, or Die!
Monte, in fact the NIST report findings don’t support the pancake theory. Largely their findings are inconclusive.
In terms of free fall speed. The buildings fell at the same rate as if a ball were dropped from the top of the build taking approximately 10 seconds to implode. There’s a big difference for what some on this board call “truthers” and the facts.
For anybody inclined to flex their cranial tissues a wee bit, all the information is available on-line at http://www.nist.gov and at the 9/11 commission report: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/911/
It’s really lazy Aj to hurl epithets and not have a conversation…
tough, tatters. deal with it.
Supreme Court appeal denied for 1993 WTC bomber
It sounds to me like the guards at Colorado’s Supermax prison are doing a fine job.
The other forgotten casualty was,I believe, that Monica Rodriguez Smith was pregnant when she was murdered.
And it is also a shame that there is still a hole at ground zero. I have heard different reasons for why nothing is going up at the site but, none of them sound convincing.
Apparently, Aj, it’s you that isn’t dealing with it…
dealing with it is kind of easy.
perfect john. let him flex on that link. Stupid was being gentle.
I will never forget any Marine killed in the line of his duties, God Bless Them All. Semper Fi
I agree.
I really make an effort to remind myself the dates that Americans have been attacked and died, some times I feel like my flag pole is a yo yo.
LMAOROF
thanks I needed that.
Is meatpieand taters really Rosie?
Mu observations on the kool aid OD:
I have had about enough of this truther BS. In the end, it is always spewed by people who have zero understanding of science and have more than a little trouble with reality in their lives.
Read the following:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html
It is “Twin Towers for Dummies”. And for goodness sake, get that metal plate in your head readjusted.
I remember that day telling a co-worker that a full out war with the Muslim world is inevitable & I still believe this to be true. That is why I so disapprove of the rebuilding plans…it is just saying I dare you to do it again. (aside from the fact that the new buildings planned are just plain ugly)
If I had my way the reconstruction would be an enormous hardened bunker complex – a memorial & the new home of the stock exchange.
I have no intention of ever going near the “Freedom Tower”. It is just a vane, multi-billion dollar bulls eye.
Great video.
If the twin towers or a WTC memorial is built, the UN should be located on the top floor.
Semper Fi – and thanks to all our military, near and far.
I wish people – especially people on this site who should know better – would stop calling The Deniers “truthers” as they are not interested in truth.
Meatpie is a Ron Paul fan.
BirdsIdiots of a feather…Meatpie,
You deniers claim the government is involved and is covering it all up. How do reconcile this with the fact Ron Paul said it was just 19 thugs who flew planes into the buildings?
You idiots cannot have it both ways. Which do you support, the lies or the liar? All of us want to know.
Not a single story about it anywhere in MSM today. For shame.
AMEN!
Many like to give them a pass on “military targets”.
I don’t see how this qualifies for a “pass”. They wouldn’t either if it had been them in the barracks.
Some of them forget – Hell is for ever.
And as E.V. Hill always used to say, there ain’t no back door out of there.
Frankly, it looks like most of them will be right at home inside the Seven Years reign of the anti-christ.
They’ll think they arrived at their utopian la-la land.
Better a hole in the ground than the garbage the Liberals are plotting – such as the ISLAMIC memorial at the crash site of Flight 93, where they plot a huge “green” Red Crescent of Red Maple trees, and a center tribute to the terrorists who brought the plane down, calling them, I think, “Freedom Fighters”. Right there at the murder site!
If people are accountable when they sign on the dotted line for a mortgage, who can they think they are NOT accountable for their own elected officials they vote for – knowing full well what they are??? knowing full well what they will do with the power that is conceded to them as they are installed in each of their offices.
It is the old anti-war song of the Liberals “WHO WILL ANSWER!” – THEY KNOW FULL WELL! They sang it til they were so dizzy, they didn’t know if they were coming or going – but they still KNOW!
I would get banned if I say what I think of you.
Sometimes you city dudes that have never lifted a hand to ANYTHING deserve exactly what you will end up getting.
Go get yourself to your community college and take ONE BASIC COURSE in welding, if you are so determined to ignore JUNIOR HIGH SCIENCE.
You find a thing called “TINSEL STRENGTH” of metal. “TEMPERED STEEL”.
It fascinated me in school. And then again, my dad was a welder.
Once, my retractable metal tape measure broke. We live 50 miles from any kind of hardware store – ours would look like what you think of as “convenience stores. Nobody in town had one, and I was in the middle of a project without time to make a 100 mile trip for a small measuring device.
My tape broke near the center coil. I took it apart and found the tab on the end of the strip was uniquely formed to fit a slot in the center coil the tape was to wrap around. After it was snapped in two, the new end wouldn’t go in.
Then I remembered “tempering”. I lit the stove top and stuck it in til it was hot. I cooled it, clipped it with simple scissors to fit, and poked it in the coil. I bent the end of the new tab back like the old one was, but it wouldn’t stay anymore – it WAS limp as a wet noodle. All it could do was slither.
So I fit it back in and found some pliars to hold the tab down with, and got a pot holder for the pliars, and stuck it back in the fire again.
Now it all had the original tinsel back again, and it worked perfectly.
If you’d ever had any interest in any tools, (swords,) knives, etc – anything a blacksmith does, anything a welder does, besides anything the steel mills do – in other words, some basic knowledge of the things about you that your own very life depends critically upon, like the plow shares onthe back of tracters that help produce your food on your very table, and the knives someone in your home uses to prep0are your meals…
Then you wouldn’t be so likely to go around showing the planet that you have a basic ignorance of the essential knowledge of life that far surpasses any grownup NOT knowing the alphabet of the language they speak.
Millions of people survive without being able to read and write – none can survive without the basic knowledge of the tools they need to prepare food for themselves.
“TINSEL STRENGTH”! Go get an education.
What will happen to you in an emergency and you cannot go to some store and buy a carton and rip it open and pop the food into a microwave for 1 minute!
In such an emergency, who will love you enough to coddle you through your willful and deadly ignorance?
Your ignorance of iron and steel is pathetic beyond description. Not to mention your baloney about jet fuel.
So much of my life revolved around those towers. In particular, “The Greatest Bar in the World,” same floor as “Windows on the World” had a “Latin” themed Thursday night after work gathering, complete with live orchestra, salsa dancing, and the most beautiful female patrons in the world.
Downtown NYC was once such a vibrant and exciting place to work and leisure.
Sadly, the MSM was too busy talking about Starbucks closing for three hours across the country to remind Americans about the anniversary of the WTC attack on 2/26/93.
While some of us remember that terrorist attack and several others over the past decades, other remain willfully ignorant or worse, stupid.
Impressive. Ombre Rose strung 4 comments together without once reciting an angry bible verse. Unfortunately, she couldn’t resist using her beloved ALL CAPS numerous times.
