All the bigotry that’s fit to stage again

In April 2006, I reported on an attempt by NBC News’s Dateline to stage an Islamophobia sting on NASCAR fans.

In November 2007, I called attention to an attempt by ABC News’s Primetime Live to stage a homophobia sting in Birmingham, Alabama.

Now, Primetime Live is replicating the Islamophobia stunt thing in Texas (hat tip – LGF):

The Sept. 11 attacks, the Iraq war and suicide bombings worldwide have changed not only the way we live but the way we look at those around us, especially Muslims. “Islamophobia” has entered the American vernacular, and the anti-Muslim attitudes and prejudice it describes remain common.

But what if you witnessed “Islamophobia” in action and saw someone being victimized because of someone else’s prejudices? What would you do?

ABC’s production crew outfitted The Czech Stop, a bustling roadside bakery north of Waco, Texas, with hidden cameras and two actors. One played a female customer wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf, or hijab. The other acted as a sales clerk who refused to serve her and spouted common anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs.

The polarity of reactions was shocking, from support to seething disapproval. Never did we expect customers to be so passionate or candid.

Like I’ve said before:

Welcome to Serious Broadcast Journalism: If you can’t find the video you need to fit the P.C. left narrative, hire actors to make it happen.

Time for another round of news sting ideas for the MSM.

Here’s a refresher for you of reader sting ideas from the last time the dinosaur broadcast outlets pulled this crap:

I wonder if they would consider sending a professor wearing an “I Love W” button and an American flag pin into the faculty lounge at Harvard or some other liberal ivory tower with a hidden camera. I would love to see that experiment. I can’t imagine anyone at NBC doing that one. Maybe John Stossel at ABC, though?

…Perhaps when I get back from deployment, you can follow me around Seattle and see how I get treated wearing my Navy uniform…

…Why don’t you set up some white guy with hidden cameras, put a George Bush T-Shirt on him and have him walk down a street in Pakistan. Or, better yet, have him walk down a street in Detroit. I’ll just bet you could get a lot of bigoted reactions…

…* Wear a pro-life t-shirt to a Women’s Studies class.
* Wear a Halliburton company polo shirt to the Kos Kidz annual blogmeet.
* PUBLISH CARTOONS WITH MOHAMMED IN THEM…

Charles Johnson notes that CAIR’s fingerprints are all over the ABC sting. Hey, ABC News stage managers: How about sending someone undercover at a CAIR office for a month and seeing what bigotry and fraud you turn up?

Oh, and here’s a helpful reminder from IBD:

Actually I did that when I was taking a “women’s studies” class at William & Mary. I got dirty looks from my classmates and the prof told me that I was a “disruption” and not to wear it again. Next class I had on a shirt with Ronald Reagan on it. I felt discriminated against but no one at the college cared. They said that I really needed to find a “new hobby”. I got out of there with a C (the lowest grade I received while getting my degree from there).
I think the most intolerant people are liberals as we see everyday by the posting of the trolls. Sadly, the biggest troll of them all is also in academia and probably does the same to his students.

Congratulations to ABC for reminding me why I never watch the MSM anymore.

Their cute little ‘experiment’ (READ: “baiting”) was an attempt to bolster their views on “Islamophobia”.

It was a propaganda piece directed against the justified anger and resentment of Americans toward Islam being shoved down our throats, as well as an attempt to prettify a misogynist, oppressive, inherently violent theocracy.

Islam is diametrically opposed to everything a free, democratic society stands for. Hint: If you dress the part, don’t be surprised at the reactions.

The muslim women in Western countries have the option of wearing the hijab, or not. Let their sockpuppet Javed walk around the streets of Saudi Arabia or Iran, without that “empowering” head-to-toe shroud, and see what happens.

Gotta love how they also cited a couple of people who were quite proud to go along with ABC’s pap, and accuse the normal response to a representative of Islam, as “bigotry and hatred”.

CAIR, the source so eagerly used by ABC, is a wing of Hamas. Any “statistics” retrieved from them are going to be skewed against ‘infidels’ to begin with.
“Arab” is a race, not a religion. Proportionately, Middle Eastern Arabs are predominately muslim.
Most of them are not Christian for good reasons. Christianity isn’t welcome in places like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran, Syria, or Egypt.

CAIR tried and failed to intimidate bloggers like Charles Johnson.

Newsflash ABC: We’re not intimidated by you either.

I work at a college, with a chapel not far from my office. Once in a while, I’ll write a prayer in the book and those prayers are disseminated in a newsletter every week. Back in January, I wrote a prayer for “respect of life from conception to natural death and an end to abortion” (my exact words).

Guess what was ommitted from the newsletter? Yep. And, whenever I write that prayer (a genuine, heartfelt prayer), it’s either left off or changed to “from BIRTH to DEATH”.

Likewise, back in 2004, I had a “W” sticker on my car. I was rather ambivolent and liberal at the time, and my brother (who I shared the car with) put it on. One morning my boss came in and the first thing she said was, “A George Bush sticker?! Really?!” No “Good morning”. No “How are you?”. Just a full-front attack about a sticker. A sticker.

They are starting an “environmental committee” here and – despite my better judgment – I joined because I want to make sure the committe doesn’t decide to install rationing toilet-paper rolls or take away our heaters (because it’s cold in our office!).

So I know all too well the “tolerance” that takes place at institutions of higher learning…and mine isn’t even the worst.

    That’s a good one. It wouldn’t fit into their pro-Islam, anti-Israel propaganda.

Islam is the new chic religion for liberals.

By the way, if John McCain (I’ll support him despite not caring for him–anything to stop the Muslim Obamas) won’t even mention Obama’s middle name and is going to let them control the debate this entire election cycle, he has lost the election already. If he had the middle name “Hussein,” liberals would be all over it.

Welcome to Serious Broadcast Journalism: If you can’t find the video you need to fit the P.C. left narrative, hire actors to make it happen.

That is so true. Actually, almost everything in the broadcast media of ABC, NBC, and CBS is staged to be PC. They will ask a question in a restaurant to find out what “the average person” is thinking. They will get 100 different responses that the reporter doesn’t like. . .and then choose the one liberal response they like. That is as bad as putting actors on the news.

Another thing: On the evening broadcasts, they have to have a certain number of different races and ethnic groups they must show in the 30 minutes. This is as bad as staging the news. They are so concerned with everything EXCEPT the real news.

This was no “sting”. It was an exercise aimed in soliciting one and only one response.

A true sting would be to make the scenario as sterile as possible. Apparently, that approach would not generate the desired response, so they added a catalyst.

When most people walk into a confrontational situation, they tend to either avoid it (mind their own business) or go along with the crowd. In this case, going with the flow would have been to jump on to the derision bandwagon.

ABC did not play put any alternative scenario to even attempt to approach a scientific method.

In addition, they way they set this up more closely resembles entrapment rather than a sting. Entrapment occurs when you introduce catalysts or other variables that have a tendency to move people in a direction they normally would not take. And anytime you introduce “peer pressure” into the equation, the case for entrapment is strong. Calling this a “sting” is really dishonest and disengenous, for a sting operation takes extreme pains to avoid any hint of entrapment.

With that in mind, ABC’s piece is worse than yellow journalism. They are not only manufacturing a story, they are doing so in a way that is set up to generate a predisposed, and largely pre-determined, result. And in their blind zeal to prove a theory, they are creating the tinder for a backlash from the Muslim community. All ABC has done here is manufacture hate through the use of smoke and mirrors. CAIR could not have done a better job.

This stuff just comes out of the liberal mind. That’s where it’s born and grows and lives.

If you had a third party hidden camera surreptitiously recording typical interactions between a liberal and a conservative you’d probably see a lot of abuse by the former towards the latter. What a great story that would be. They could put together a segment and call it “Hate in America — Why is the Left so Unhinged?”. And no actors would be necessary. The piece would write itself.

Though I suspect the liberal producers would be on the side of the liberals, justify their words as “passionate” rather than “hateful”, and the piece would never run. “No story here”, they’d say. “Move along”. Maybe John Stossel would do it though.

The -phobia suffix is used to create the impression that the subject has an irrational, obsessive fear to the point of being mentally ill. The reality is quite different. The first case (Islamophobia) is used to describe a very justified distrust of more extreme Muslims. In the second (homophobia) is used against those with a moral objection, revulsion, or mere discomfort with a lifestyle that is far from the norm. It is even used to describe those that have no problem with homosexuals but are opposed to gay marriage.

Word are being used to frame the debate and create the impression that those opposed to their views are irrational, cowardly, and borderline crazy. And nobody wants to be crazy.

I think they were betting on it being some Hickville with racist tendencies.

I have driven that stretch of interstate more times than I could count. IIRC, The Czech Stop is in West, Texas, and is well known for their kolaches. I’ve not ever stopped in, since I’ve always been on some semblance of a schedule when driving through.

I wouldn’t necessarily be too hard on the store owners, though, either. One would have to wonder how much/what exactly they were told when they were asked to participate. Kind of like Montel Williams misleading military familes to get them to appear on his talk show…

Why don’t they take their cameras to one of these “Anti-War” rallies or Code Pink parties where a pro-troop congregation is also around ( ALA Berkeley )? They’d witness some good examples of intolerance.

Spot on. I can imagine a youtube video of clips from the ABCnews piece alternating with similar clips from Borat. It would be a challenge to decide which is more ridiculous.

This pseudo-story is what my J-school profs were warning about a quarter-century ago: Agenda Journalism. Those of them who are still around are probably feeling more than a little like Cassandra these days.

What breeds an agenda journo mentality is the desire not just to report the story, but to become a part of it and to manipulate it as part of a greater “narrative.”

But if you return to the well too often people start getting wise; nowadays the irony is that the journalists increasingly don’t just “participate” in the story, they end up becoming the story.

One catechism of the Mafia is, “Stay out of the papers.” Those who run the papers, as well as broadcast journos, should borrow the same advice: “Stay out of the blogs.”

All I could think of from this is “fake but accurate.” I guess the MSM is reduced to fabricating news to fit their agenda instead of just giving a liberal slant. The yellow journalism days of William Randolph Hearst are alive and well!

I guess the situation in Iraq is improving since ABC is making up news. I don’t watch these people anymore because the majority of them cannot be trusted. To pretend that discrimination exists only against gays or muslims is getting really old.

What many may not realize is that the store is just north of Waco and is inhabited by a large number of Catholics. Plus it is not too far away from Crawford Texas. Now lessee what’s located in Crawford? mmmmm is it Ann Richard’s grave? nooo. Is it a Molly Ivins’ memorial plinth? nooooo. Could it be George Dubya Bush’s home?

and we know how backward he is so the folks at that bakery must be just as backward

A PC view that “everybody is just like us” is the kind of stupidity which led PC morons like Bush to believe that we could transform Iraq into a “shining city on the hill” in 30-90 days.

“The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 9/8/03: Last February, with invasion just weeks away, sources in the Bush administration told Newsweek that they were expecting a postwar occupation of Iraq of 30 to 90 days.”

    Nice selective interpretation there!
“postwar” = “shining city on the hill”

Anyone else see a problem with this kind of troll logic?

ABC’s production crew outfitted The Czech Stop, a bustling roadside bakery north of Waco, Texas, with hidden cameras and two actors. One played a female customer wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf, or hijab. The other acted as a sales clerk who refused to serve her and spouted common anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs.

From whom did they get these “common” anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs were these? I’ve never heard people talking this way.
