All the bigotry that’s fit to stage again
In April 2006, I reported on an attempt by NBC News’s Dateline to stage an Islamophobia sting on NASCAR fans.
In November 2007, I called attention to an attempt by ABC News’s Primetime Live to stage a homophobia sting in Birmingham, Alabama.
Now, Primetime Live is replicating the Islamophobia stunt thing in Texas (hat tip - LGF):
The Sept. 11 attacks, the Iraq war and suicide bombings worldwide have changed not only the way we live but the way we look at those around us, especially Muslims. “Islamophobia” has entered the American vernacular, and the anti-Muslim attitudes and prejudice it describes remain common.
But what if you witnessed “Islamophobia” in action and saw someone being victimized because of someone else’s prejudices? What would you do?
ABC’s production crew outfitted The Czech Stop, a bustling roadside bakery north of Waco, Texas, with hidden cameras and two actors. One played a female customer wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf, or hijab. The other acted as a sales clerk who refused to serve her and spouted common anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs.
The polarity of reactions was shocking, from support to seething disapproval. Never did we expect customers to be so passionate or candid.
Like I’ve said before:
Welcome to Serious Broadcast Journalism: If you can’t find the video you need to fit the P.C. left narrative, hire actors to make it happen.
Time for another round of news sting ideas for the MSM.
Here’s a refresher for you of reader sting ideas from the last time the dinosaur broadcast outlets pulled this crap:
I wonder if they would consider sending a professor wearing an “I Love W” button and an American flag pin into the faculty lounge at Harvard or some other liberal ivory tower with a hidden camera. I would love to see that experiment. I can’t imagine anyone at NBC doing that one. Maybe John Stossel at ABC, though?
…Perhaps when I get back from deployment, you can follow me around Seattle and see how I get treated wearing my Navy uniform…
…Why don’t you set up some white guy with hidden cameras, put a George Bush T-Shirt on him and have him walk down a street in Pakistan. Or, better yet, have him walk down a street in Detroit. I’ll just bet you could get a lot of bigoted reactions…
…* Wear a pro-life t-shirt to a Women’s Studies class.
* Wear a Halliburton company polo shirt to the Kos Kidz annual blogmeet.
* PUBLISH CARTOONS WITH MOHAMMED IN THEM…
Charles Johnson notes that CAIR’s fingerprints are all over the ABC sting. Hey, ABC News stage managers: How about sending someone undercover at a CAIR office for a month and seeing what bigotry and fraud you turn up?
Oh, and here’s a helpful reminder from IBD:

ABC - the Arab Brodcasting Network.
How about someone wearing a Star of David T-shirt interacting with the locals in Dearborn, Michigan?
MSM will go to any length to support their bias against the American people who aren’t raving liberal loons. Does MSM ever wonder why people have such contempt for journalists?
Wonderful ideas, but it will never happen. They don’t care to shed any light on the realities of the dark side.
The MSM borders on absurdity most of the time and jumps over into it on many occassions. Fabricating news like this is definitely one of the latter.
Who?
I have an idea for them. Have them secretly film a preacher walking, carrying a Bible, around in Saudi Arabia!
Or how about this. Have them secretly film a conservative, Christian, Republican walking around in Hollyweird!
But, they aren’t interested in covering REAL bigotry. Only in covering staged bigotry.
Actually I did that when I was taking a “women’s studies” class at William & Mary. I got dirty looks from my classmates and the prof told me that I was a “disruption” and not to wear it again. Next class I had on a shirt with Ronald Reagan on it. I felt discriminated against but no one at the college cared. They said that I really needed to find a “new hobby”. I got out of there with a C (the lowest grade I received while getting my degree from there).
I think the most intolerant people are liberals as we see everyday by the posting of the trolls. Sadly, the biggest troll of them all is also in academia and probably does the same to his students.
Congratulations to ABC for reminding me why I never watch the MSM anymore.
Their cute little ‘experiment’ (READ: “baiting”) was an attempt to bolster their views on “Islamophobia”.
It was a propaganda piece directed against the justified anger and resentment of Americans toward Islam being shoved down our throats, as well as an attempt to prettify a misogynist, oppressive, inherently violent theocracy.
Islam is diametrically opposed to everything a free, democratic society stands for. Hint: If you dress the part, don’t be surprised at the reactions.
The muslim women in Western countries have the option of wearing the hijab, or not. Let their sockpuppet Javed walk around the streets of Saudi Arabia or Iran, without that “empowering” head-to-toe shroud, and see what happens.
Gotta love how they also cited a couple of people who were quite proud to go along with ABC’s pap, and accuse the normal response to a representative of Islam, as “bigotry and hatred”.
CAIR, the source so eagerly used by ABC, is a wing of Hamas. Any “statistics” retrieved from them are going to be skewed against ‘infidels’ to begin with.
“Arab” is a race, not a religion. Proportionately, Middle Eastern Arabs are predominately muslim.
Most of them are not Christian for good reasons. Christianity isn’t welcome in places like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran, Syria, or Egypt.
CAIR tried and failed to intimidate bloggers like Charles Johnson.
Newsflash ABC: We’re not intimidated by you either.
It makes you wonder if the “reactionaries” were also actors…
The mindless arrogance of the liberal elite is astonishing. The fact that they categorize, “profile” if you will, Americans using cartoonish stereotypes telegraphs their intellectual and ethical standards which have clearly hit - what’s lower than rock bottom?
Good point. Certainly reasonable to expect that they were.
Hmmmm as a Catholic I am being discriminated against more than Protestants are just under half of those who heart Islam…
I DEMAND A TV INVESTIGATIVE SPECIAL NOW!!!!
It’s high time our leaders grow a set before we become like our friends in europe where Islamofascism dictates our behavior.

Javed is not alone. The number of anti-Islamic hate crime incidents in the United States has more than quadrupled from 28 incidents in 2000 to 156 incidents in 2006,
Thats just, uh, well, that’s just….
wait …only 156? In the entire country for a year?
Hell, I’VE been insulted in traffic 156 times in one MONTH.
Plus her little ‘poor me’ “No ONE HAS EVER DEFENDED ME” reeks of CAIR, ’cause that is total B.S.
I work at a college, with a chapel not far from my office. Once in a while, I’ll write a prayer in the book and those prayers are disseminated in a newsletter every week. Back in January, I wrote a prayer for “respect of life from conception to natural death and an end to abortion” (my exact words).
Guess what was ommitted from the newsletter? Yep. And, whenever I write that prayer (a genuine, heartfelt prayer), it’s either left off or changed to “from BIRTH to DEATH”.
Likewise, back in 2004, I had a “W” sticker on my car. I was rather ambivolent and liberal at the time, and my brother (who I shared the car with) put it on. One morning my boss came in and the first thing she said was, “A George Bush sticker?! Really?!” No “Good morning”. No “How are you?”. Just a full-front attack about a sticker. A sticker.
They are starting an “environmental committee” here and - despite my better judgment - I joined because I want to make sure the committe doesn’t decide to install rationing toilet-paper rolls or take away our heaters (because it’s cold in our office!).
So I know all too well the “tolerance” that takes place at institutions of higher learning…and mine isn’t even the worst.
Hey, if you can’t find the news, make the news.
I read this in the article
The number of American deaths on American soil from Islamikazes went up 3000% on 9-11. If we are talking statistics, I win.
Once again, I can see the model rocket engines used to ignite the side-saddle gas tanks in a Chevy truck because the outfit trying to make them look unsafe couldn’t get the tanks to explode on their own….
Another fine example that reinforces my decision to cut off cable/TV six months ago.
I feel clean.
That’s a good one. It wouldn’t fit into their pro-Islam, anti-Israel propaganda.
Islam is the new chic religion for liberals.
By the way, if John McCain (I’ll support him despite not caring for him–anything to stop the Muslim Obamas) won’t even mention Obama’s middle name and is going to let them control the debate this entire election cycle, he has lost the election already. If he had the middle name “Hussein,” liberals would be all over it.
That is so true. Actually, almost everything in the broadcast media of ABC, NBC, and CBS is staged to be PC. They will ask a question in a restaurant to find out what “the average person” is thinking. They will get 100 different responses that the reporter doesn’t like. . .and then choose the one liberal response they like. That is as bad as putting actors on the news.
Another thing: On the evening broadcasts, they have to have a certain number of different races and ethnic groups they must show in the 30 minutes. This is as bad as staging the news. They are so concerned with everything EXCEPT the real news.
I think that says it all!
Ron, I wonder how many of those have been staged, like the noose incident at Columbia. I would bet the vast majority of them.
It seems like the snobs at ABC have a stereotypical view of our fellow citizens living in Texas. Were they hoping to film “live rednecks” in action? ABC, what a bunch of hateful idiots.
I haven’t watched ABC since Sam Donnelson was their White House correspondent yelling questions at President Ronald Reagan. They have been and still are a disgrace to our great country.
terrig,
I attended W&M in the dark ages when it was considered a truly conservative enclave. I took a government class where I let my conservative beliefs be known in discussions and could never understand why I got lower grades than my close friend who had the same exact answers to his discussion questions as I did. It has taken me all these years to realize that I was being discriminated against. Who knew in 1964?
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
But I must question when an outside party has provided the tinder, accelerant, the match, and the blowing wind….
When I saw where this program was going, I immediately turned it off. It reminds me of “Jackass”. Let’s see just how stupid we can all be. If you don’t want this crap on television, then you have to turn it off.
Someone should make a sting in which you present a NYTimes reporter with a 9 or 10 year old story that purports to show some scandal by a Republican presidential candidate that has no evidence whatsoever. Let’s see how far they will go with the story without verification and how far other elements of the liberal MSM will go to give the story “gravitas.”
Oh wait, it’s been done…..
Great. Go from mis-reporting the news to mis-constructing it.
I actually had a lot of fun wearing one of those “I LOVE HALLIBURTON” shirts around Indy. I actually got some horrified shrieks and gasps from some people.
And yes I did check to make sure it was the shirt and not some other faux pas like a wide open barn door.
Not all cultures are compatible. We had 400 years of Indian wars, for example, resulting in the reservation system.
My suspicion is that Islamic culture is too religiously zealous to be compatible with our principles of religious freedom, except under circumstances where they are too small a minority to impose their views on others. A PC view that “everybody is just like us” is the kind of stupidity which led PC morons like Bush to believe that we could transform Iraq into a “shining city on the hill” in 30-90 days.
“The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 9/8/03: Last February, with invasion just weeks away, sources in the Bush administration told Newsweek that they were expecting a postwar occupation of Iraq of 30 to 90 days.”
I watched this last night and was not impressed that they would have to stage what has never been legtimately reported as having happened. I guess it is easy to fabricate that Americans, in Texas, are backwards bigots. That is not reporting, that is putting on a comedy show like Candid Camera.
This was no “sting”. It was an exercise aimed in soliciting one and only one response.
A true sting would be to make the scenario as sterile as possible. Apparently, that approach would not generate the desired response, so they added a catalyst.
When most people walk into a confrontational situation, they tend to either avoid it (mind their own business) or go along with the crowd. In this case, going with the flow would have been to jump on to the derision bandwagon.
ABC did not play put any alternative scenario to even attempt to approach a scientific method.
In addition, they way they set this up more closely resembles entrapment rather than a sting. Entrapment occurs when you introduce catalysts or other variables that have a tendency to move people in a direction they normally would not take. And anytime you introduce “peer pressure” into the equation, the case for entrapment is strong. Calling this a “sting” is really dishonest and disengenous, for a sting operation takes extreme pains to avoid any hint of entrapment.
With that in mind, ABC’s piece is worse than yellow journalism. They are not only manufacturing a story, they are doing so in a way that is set up to generate a predisposed, and largely pre-determined, result. And in their blind zeal to prove a theory, they are creating the tinder for a backlash from the Muslim community. All ABC has done here is manufacture hate through the use of smoke and mirrors. CAIR could not have done a better job.
It occurs to me that not only did they stage the Muslim, they staged the cashier behind the counter at this place.
What is the name of the establishment so I can be sure to avoid it if I’m unfortunate enough to find myself in TX?
How about in the interest of “Fairness”, wearing an “End Affirmative Action” T-shirt while walking down the hall outside Madonna Constantine’s office at Columbia.
I’m reminded of a recent news story (can’t find the source now, hope I have the gist of it right) about a recording of a Cuban official telling a group there that if they walked into a NY City restaurant they might not be served because they’re Latin. This stuff just comes out of the liberal mind. That’s where it’s born and grows and lives.
If you had a third party hidden camera surreptitiously recording typical interactions between a liberal and a conservative you’d probably see a lot of abuse by the former towards the latter. What a great story that would be. They could put together a segment and call it “Hate in America — Why is the Left so Unhinged?”. And no actors would be necessary. The piece would write itself.
Though I suspect the liberal producers would be on the side of the liberals, justify their words as “passionate” rather than “hateful”, and the piece would never run. “No story here”, they’d say. “Move along”. Maybe John Stossel would do it though.
Hey, was this Muslim woman escorted by her father, brother, or uncle? After all, she is a good Muslim, right? Don’t want her mixing with the kaffirs, you know.
I’m a “Suicidebombophobe”.
I’m so ashamed.
Wonder why they chose this location (a historically “Czech” community) along the interstate in Texas? Do they know something about the Czechs we don’t? Just what are they trying to say?
OT, but for anyone who follows the conservative banner, a moment of silence for the man who stood tall and called for history to stop, the man who for many years defined conservatism, William F. Buckley Jr. has passed
Oh, really? I can’t ever recall using that word or hearing it in a conversation I was having. It is a word conjured up by academia/MSM to suit their needs much like of the word homophobia.
The -phobia suffix is used to create the impression that the subject has an irrational, obsessive fear to the point of being mentally ill. The reality is quite different. The first case (Islamophobia) is used to describe a very justified distrust of more extreme Muslims. In the second (homophobia) is used against those with a moral objection, revulsion, or mere discomfort with a lifestyle that is far from the norm. It is even used to describe those that have no problem with homosexuals but are opposed to gay marriage.
Word are being used to frame the debate and create the impression that those opposed to their views are irrational, cowardly, and borderline crazy. And nobody wants to be crazy.
There are some things that bothered me about this sting. I frequently go to that gas station on the way to and from College Station. It was obviously a sting portrayed by actors.
1 - there is never one cashier at that counter. 2-3 are frequent. 2 - I have NEVER seen that guy at that store. It was the first thing out of my mouth when this scene unfolded. 3 - I love how her reason for not going out by herself is fear of angry whites and not part of her cultural upbringing. Heck I don’t go out by myself at night because it is NOT SAFE as a woman. If I implied that it was because of my fear of blacks or mexicans I would be strung up (fyi - not a worry I fear all men ;))
How convenient that they don’t list her school or allow any other way to check her credentials.
With that said, I will not be buying Kolaches from this store in the future. I won’t support a store that thinks it is okay to prank its own customers with the assumption that I am a jerk that will allow another woman to be belittled .
Shouldn’t we be investigating Muslim hate crimes?
Someday all this P.C. stuff is gonna’ backlash on them.
Religious hate crimes are as old as the hills: Moses killed an Eygptian for beating up a Hebrew, yet soon afterward Moses caught a Hebrew beating up a fellow Hebrew and intervened, only to have the Hebrew bully use Moses’ killing of the Eygptian as a way to shut him up (Exodus 2:11–15). Religious hate crimes will never end, but the US and other Western nations have the least instances of it because of the “age of enlightenment”–and that should be a comparison boldly and loudly reported by ABC News when it seeks ratings with a stunt like this.
This is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE. This is why we need to re-address ‘freedom of the press’. This is not ‘the press’, this is disturbing the peace. Why don’t they just start a riot? Why don’t they go into an inner city and claim to be a racist to get ‘news’.
Thank God for the internet because it is the only thing that will put these ‘media’ outlets to pasture for good. This is not ‘news’, this is not what ‘news’ is supposed to be. This is not why we have ‘freedom of the press’.
This is the equivalent of yelling ‘fire’ in a crowded room to see what the reaction would be.
I tell you what, why not take some pig’s blood to the local mosque and pour it at the doorstep during their Friday prayers. . . see how ‘tolerant’ these ‘non-islamophobes’ are.
hhhmmmm…
Christian heterosexual male walking into a “gay business” and asking for straight literature.
A redneck walking into a predominantly black club wearing a t-shirt with a confederate flag on it and asking for a drink.
A heterosexual going to their school’s local pflag group and attempting to change the standards of membership.
Wearing a military uniform at socialist rally on campus.
Doing any of the above while descretating their own personal copy of the koran or “out” magazine.
GSP
These insults have been greatly provided by an over caffienated college student studying for a statistics test
I saw some of that last night. What a bunch of phony baloney! The MSM continues to push the Manhattan/Malibu Cabal’s tenet that most Americans in flyover country, particularly the South, are nasty, hateful, intolerant people. If that’s true, then why do they need to stage these things?
If you want to see real bigotry in action without bogus set-ups, put some hidden cameras in any newsroom in America and send in Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, or President Bush.
bayou22~
I think they were betting on it being some Hickville with racist tendencies.
I have driven that stretch of interstate more times than I could count. IIRC, The Czech Stop is in West, Texas, and is well known for their kolaches. I’ve not ever stopped in, since I’ve always been on some semblance of a schedule when driving through.
I wouldn’t necessarily be too hard on the store owners, though, either. One would have to wonder how much/what exactly they were told when they were asked to participate. Kind of like Montel Williams misleading military familes to get them to appear on his talk show…
So it’s official, ABC news is now on the same reporting level as the Borat movie.
Why don’t they take their cameras to one of these “Anti-War” rallies or Code Pink parties where a pro-troop congregation is also around ( ALA Berkeley )? They’d witness some good examples of intolerance.
There, fixed it for you jr.
??? Are Goats Islamophobic???
Spot on. I can imagine a youtube video of clips from the ABCnews piece alternating with similar clips from Borat. It would be a challenge to decide which is more ridiculous.
This pseudo-story is what my J-school profs were warning about a quarter-century ago: Agenda Journalism. Those of them who are still around are probably feeling more than a little like Cassandra these days.
What breeds an agenda journo mentality is the desire not just to report the story, but to become a part of it and to manipulate it as part of a greater “narrative.”
But if you return to the well too often people start getting wise; nowadays the irony is that the journalists increasingly don’t just “participate” in the story, they end up becoming the story.
One catechism of the Mafia is, “Stay out of the papers.” Those who run the papers, as well as broadcast journos, should borrow the same advice: “Stay out of the blogs.”
Yes, because they know they’ll do it with anything.
Expose: Goats Suffer From Islomophobia, Goat Hearders Protest, Burn Goats In Efigy.
ABC should do the reverse and go to the Minneapolis airport and flag down a taxi. Just don’t carry alcohol with you, among other things.
Here’s a great idea for a sting… how about we try to open a US Marine recruiting office in San Francisco!
Oh, wait… been done already. How’d that turn out?
Fake journalism is all fun and games, until one of those actors gets punched in the mouth. They’re lucky someone didn’t get clocked. It happens all the time in Texas. They call this freedom of the press? Freedom of the press to pull crap out of thin air!!!!!!!
Can you imagine what went on beforw the Internet ?
I have an idea for ABC if they wanted to see real discrimination. How about the have someone dress up as a soldier and go into Berkeley and SF and film the reaction there?
All I could think of from this is “fake but accurate.” I guess the MSM is reduced to fabricating news to fit their agenda instead of just giving a liberal slant. The yellow journalism days of William Randolph Hearst are alive and well!
I guess the situation in Iraq is improving since ABC is making up news. I don’t watch these people anymore because the majority of them cannot be trusted. To pretend that discrimination exists only against gays or muslims is getting really old.
What many may not realize is that the store is just north of Waco and is inhabited by a large number of Catholics. Plus it is not too far away from Crawford Texas. Now lessee what’s located in Crawford? mmmmm is it Ann Richard’s grave? nooo. Is it a Molly Ivins’ memorial plinth? nooooo. Could it be George Dubya Bush’s home?
and we know how backward he is so the folks at that bakery must be just as backward
So…..I reckon that Honor Killings are
OK with that crowd?
Remind me…was it Mormons, Quakers or Baptists that flew those planes into the WTC on 9.11.01?
How about showing a video of Daniel Pearl to all the dhimmis at ABC?
Nice selective interpretation there!
“postwar” = “shining city on the hill”
Anyone else see a problem with this kind of troll logic?
ABC’s production crew outfitted The Czech Stop, a bustling roadside bakery north of Waco, Texas, with hidden cameras and two actors. One played a female customer wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf, or hijab. The other acted as a sales clerk who refused to serve her and spouted common anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs.
From whom did they get these “common” anti-Muslim and anti-Arab slurs were these? I’ve never heard people talking this way.
Excellent post. Thank you.
