Seattle politician to developers: Go green or else

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 28, 2008 01:14 PM

Via Orbusmax, King County Washington official Ron Sims has proposed first-in-the-nation legislation tying land development approvals to the global warming agenda:

King County Executive Ron Sims plans to introduce legislation that would allow the county to reject or modify development projects because of their effect on global warming.

If the proposal is passed by the Metropolitan King County Council, county land-use officials believe King County would be the first jurisdiction in the nation to take that step.

Sims, who has made climate change a top issue during his third term, said Wednesday he will introduce legislation in May that would consider greenhouse-gas emissions as part of the environmental-review process.

King County already requires developers to answer questions about their projects’ likely effects on climate, but approval of the projects doesn’t depend on those answers.

Who will profit? The carbon offset racket, of course!

Sims said ordinances implementing his proposed 2008 Comprehensive Plan also would offer “carbon credits” to developers who transfer their rural development rights to urban areas.

Because that would reduce sprawl — and thus climate-altering carbon emissions — such a transfer could offset a project’s emissions that otherwise could jeopardize county approval, he said.

The details still are being worked out, Sims said: “We want to make sure it’s market-defensible, it’s legally defensible and it’s based on the science.”

He called his proposed carbon credits “a cap-and-trade scheme at a local level” that mirrors newly created national and international markets that trade carbon credits…The plan seeks to reduce the number of homes that can be built in rural areas by one-fourth by encouraging the market-based transfer of development rights to urban areas.

Meanwhile: Widescale global cooling.

Flashback: Seattle mayor warns kids: Take these eco-light bulbs or Santa and the reindeer will drown

Time to buy more carbon debits!

In keeping with the current “scientific” data, maybe he should have called his proposal a “cap and trade scam?”

Personally, I think Conservatives in this country are really missing a trick when it comes to the green issue and what it can do FOR business and the economy.

Take David Cameron - Conservative leader in the UK - he has embraced the green issue and made it acceptable to middle England. People are obsessed about the green issue over there and lots of businesses have sprung up to cater for the demand to Go Green.

Recently a major Conservative newspaper - The Daily Mail - started a campaign to end plastic supermarket bags.

A big store, Marks and Spencer, has just started to charge customers 10 cents per plastic bag… in a bid to get customers to use their own fabric shopping bags or paper bags.

When you think 90 percent of the debris in the ocean is plastic…it’s terrifying.

So being “green” is good for business..which means good for jobs, good for the overall economy.

On the broader subject of Global warming, global cooling and the debate on how much man has influenced the weather - surely it is in Americas interest to embrace alternative fuels (a major Green issue) so billions of dollars are not continually sent to corrupt regimes in the Middle East through the gas tank.

About a month ago, the History Channel did a long program on the earth’s natural history. The glaciers did not appear until around 2 million years ago (very recent on a timeline of around 4 billion years) when the volcanism of plate tectonics created the Isthmus of Panama linking the Americas. This blocked ocean currents that had kept the planet warm. Near the end, the narrative predicted another ice age in 15,000 years whether our evil fuel burning ways artificially warmed the atmosphere or not.

I wonder if these folks are aware that they are laying the ground work for massive Civil litigation class action suits.

By wording legislation to suggest that “going green requirements” directly relate to ‘Global Warming,” these folks are making it rather simple for privately owned companies effected by these increased costs to document their own financial costs and directly relate it to a cause (that very may well be disproven in the future). As a result, any company incurring increased costs based on law (which in turn is based on proven farce) will have the option to sue the government for fraud…etc.

Similarly, those wonderful Carbon Credit non-profit firms have failed to include hold-harmless language in their terms of sale. As a result, they will not only be open to Civil Litigation. They will be wide open to Fraud, Grand Larceny and about 5 other Felony charges.

This all becomes relevant when when it is proven that man is not causing “warming” here on the big blue marble. NOW, can you see why the leaders of this movement are so desparate to say that the debate is ended…and Global Warming is caused by man? They are not protecting the planet anymore (if they ever were). They are protecting their wallets.

I try to do my part on global warming by eating beef (a.k.a. cattle)

To date no viable method has been devised to capture this gas as it erupts from either end of the cow.

So, don’t let it be said that I’m not doing my part to help the green movement. Now, PETA might have issues with my contribution. ;-)

The Global Warming Crowd are slowly beginning to switch to the term “Global Climate Change.” This way they can be right whether temperatures go up or down; afterall, the earth’s climate is always changing. However, there is a major flaw in their logic. They are still calling for curbs in greenhouse gas emissions. If we are now headed for Global Cooling, shouldn’t we be increasing our CO2 emissions to help warm the planet? Don’t we need to determine if the climate is warming or cooling before we promote any action that could do more harm?

When “global cooling” hit about the 1600s, agriculture took a massive downswing. There were famines and people starved. You can’t grow crops very well, when it’s cold. But as 30 pcs and AlohaGuy pointed out, the true serious solutions are blocked more often by the Left than the Right. Improved CAFE standards, energy-efficient light bulbs, and paying more for plastic shopping bags (remember we always pay for them anyway, just the cost is hidden in your grocery bill) are negligible in their overall impact. In the short term we need more domestic oil production to replace foreign oil sources. In the long term we need nuke plants everywhere, at least 1 for every 6 million citizens, more as we start using plug-in hybrid cars. And in the long long term we need a better source of bio-fuel than corn such as algae.

But who blocks domestic drilling and construction of nuke plants? Which candidates promised to halt waste disposal at Yucca Mountain? And because the road to D.C. starts in Iowa, the corn lobby is much more powerful than the pond scum lobby. How can GW doubters be convinced to yield to solutions when Global Warmians themselves are unwilling to take the serious steps?
