John McCain’s botches of the week: “Liberal” and “dispirited”

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 1, 2008 09:21 AM

Someone needs a rest, I think. It’s going to be a long, long, long eight months. At least we got some inadvertently straight talk. For once:

Oy:

Republican candidate John McCain has had trouble winning over some of his party’s conservatives, who suspect that deep down he’s not one of them. On Thursday, McCain may have confirmed their suspicions with a slip of the tongue.

“I’m a proud conservative, liberal Republic…,” McCain said before catching himself.

“Conservative Republican,” he said deliberately, as the crowd at a brand-new Texas Instruments manufacturing plant laughed. “Hello, easy there. Let me say this: I am a proud conservative Republican, and both of my likely opponents today are liberal Democrats.”

Describing the challenge he’ll mount against Barack Obama, he vowed: ““It’ll be dispirited,” he said. “It’ll be spirited. Because there are stark differences.”

Lets face the facts John McCain is just NOT SHARP!

I’m sure part of it is the ageing process, part of it is the extreme pressures of a National Campaign, he may have gotten whacked in the head too much when a POW and a HUGE part of it is the associations, friendships and bizarre legislation he cultivates is enough to confuse even the brightest minds in the Nation.

I’m worried that he won’t even survive (drop dead) by November. Look at the way he walks (like he’s got rigor mortis setting in) and the way he holds his arms while giving speeches (like he’s wearing a back brace). This man is so NOT INSPIRING!

His personal choice to chastise the Talk Radio Icons is just plain NOT SMART!

WE’RE IN TROUBLE PEOPLE! This is the best we could do? The First Republican Primaries in 8 years and “we the people” were not given the opportunity to choose our best candidate. The “overwhelming” establishment Republican politicians endorsements before super Tuesday and a “Huckleberry” as the lone surviving alternative option.

The VP selection will be significant more than ever.

Yes, it was a slip of the tongue, and it shouldn’t mean much. But, should Sen McCain go up against that silver tongued orator, Sen Obama, in a debate what could we expect?

Sen McCain stepped in it when he wouldn’t let go of his mis-charaterization of Gov Romney’s use of the word ‘timetable.’ Fortunately, not much was made of it because Gov Romney was more than civil in attempting to correct Sen McCain.

Sen McCain stepped into again when he attempted to take Sen Obama to task over the comment about Al Qaeda establishing a base in Iraq. The reality is Sen McCain dismissed the premise of the question to which Sen Obama actually responded to.

Sen McCain should be concerned about having to answer the same question, because his answer would be very nearly the same as Sen Obama’s. As would any president’s response.

The Question: Sen McCain, after we win the war in Iraq and our troops have left should Al Qaeda begin a resurgence do you send troops back into Iraq?

Notwithstanding the difficulties Sen McCain has representing conservative views, his inability, or ability, at understanding what is said, not said, and in what context should be alarming.

It happened earlier and many people, including Sen McCain, became exercised about Sen Obama’s statement that we should act on Al Qaeda in Pakistan if Musharraf wouldn’t. Sen Obama was called naive, yet we recently acted and whacked a few Al Qaeda in Waziristan, Pakistan.

I opened with a question and the answer is that Sen McCain could look nearly as foolish as Sen Clinton.

For the record, McCain holds his arms in that awkward way because they were broken (along with a leg) when his plane was shot down in Vietnam. He was then stripped and beaten by an angry mob, and refused medical attention when he was taken to the Hanoi Hilton. When he finally did receive medical attention, it was marginal and interrupted by torture. I don’t know, I find his survival despite such horrendous injuries and abuse quite…inspiring.

Well, there are all kinds of possible reactions to McCain’s senior moment (that being just one of them). To be fair, we knew this already. He is a liberal republican (i.e. Rino) and yes, he will run a dispirited campaign, because his inner Democrat will always be struggling to come out. Yet, by gosh, I appreciate the candor.

Moreover, I concede that McCain would be better than Obama, but then so would my beloved cat Ashley. Does anyone want to vote for Ashley? Just as I thought. Of course at this point someone will start yelling that McCain is a war-hero and would anyone who dares criticize him on anything shut up!

My goodness, this is getting old. I won’t be able to criticize Obama because of his race. I can’t criticize McCain because of his war-hero get-out-of-jail-free card. This is so wrong at so many levels and it speaks of the enormity of the disaster the American people are being backed into. But one mustn’t give up hope. I think it is possible to influence McCain by appealing to his vanity. Bowing and scraping, nodding and obeying, might just work for conservatives. Sadly, I regret to say, I will not do it.

John McCain is not a fancy talker. Obama will run circles around him in the debates but that is to be expected. The Republican candidate has already been done in by Republican establishment figure Frank Farenkoph. Mr. Farenkoph spends his days lobbying for the gambling industry although he calls it the “gaming industry”. He is the Republican who gets to negotiate with the establishment Democrat over the terms of the presidential debates. And Mr. Farenkoph has always given in to all Democrat demands. First, he agrees that only main stream media “journalists” get to ask questions. In the last several debates, that has meant Jim Lehrer, the superannuated liberal from PBS gets to ask lots of questions. His questions are always about what new federal programs do you want. A Republican can’t win a debate on those terms. It also has meant that liberals Tom Brokaw of NBC, Bob Schiefer, a CBS liberal and other CBS guys get to be panelists. Then Farenkoph accepted one other term of Republican surrender. There can be no debate focused solely on national security and foreign affairs. The debates have to be about federal programs and giveaways. Frank Farenkph’s negotiating skills are the weakest since Neville Chamberlain.

On October 27, 1967, four days after being shot down, McCain called for a North Vietnamese guard. He told the officer, “O.K., I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital.” -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

Navy regulations say two eyewitnesses are required for any award of heroism and McCain has none for the valor awards he received.

While a prisoner of war, McCain was treated as a “special prisoner,” with privileges including being given his own private and affectionate nurse.

Ted Guy, a former Air Force Colonel held 5 1/2 years by the Vietnamese and McCain’s senior ranking officer (SRO) in the POW camp, told the U.S. Veteran Dispatch he cannot remember the communists ever laying a hand on McCain.

I don’t understand how graduating 895 in his Navel Academy class, 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war, and capitulator first qualify him as Commander in Chief.

Please educate yourself on McCain’s POW background. At least read John McCain at Wikipedia under the “Prisoner of War” section e.g. “In August of 1968, a program of vigorous torture methods began on McCain, using rope bindings into painful positions [...] His injuries to this day have left him incapable of raising his arms above his head.[14] ”

As I understand it the torture that damaged McCain’s shoulders resulting in what you call “the way he holds his arms while giving speeches (like he’s wearing a back brace)” is the “rope treatment”. The subject has his hands tied behind his back then the rope is pulled up and tied tight for long periods of time, stressing and eventually damaging the shoulder joints. Whatever we use to hold our arms up, in McCain it’s just shot.

Electing the next President of the USA is all about the future. His tenure at the Hanoi University of Hard Knocks is by and large his “front row” ticket into this Campaign Soirée. It sure isn’t his “screw the republican establishment legislative achievements”!

Something that doesn’t seem to be discussed “yet” is 1) How much more that POW term has aged him both mentally and physically compared to someone who didn’t have the same horrific experience. ADD an extra 20 years to his current age I think would be fair. 2) I have friends that had tours in Vietnam not as POWs and still are experiencing “flashback-nightmares” caused by it though not as much as they did in the 70’s and 80’s.

Has John McCain ever commented on his own “flashback-nightmares” he’s personally experienced or has he somehow been immune to that common Post-Vietnam Mental Health Condition. I presume this may never be discussed as this element by itself would DISQUALIFY HIM for POTUS.

I think John McCain is a HERO in my book and always will be just like every American soldier whom serves our country during Wartime. That part of his resume is very inspiring. Do I think he would make a Good POTUS? NO I don’t just like I don’t think JACK MURTHA would be either. Don’t misinterpret this comment as comparing him to Jack Murtha just that Murtha has military experience also. So did John F. Kerry supposedly.

My prediction is this is the FIRST SLIP of the MOUTH from McCain with many more to be expected on the horizon. W has made a cottage industry out of tongue slippage so this doesn’t disqualify him either. John McCain’s orchestrated and conflicted Career in Washington DC does though.

John McCain was NOT our best choice for Republican Presidential Candidate. His selection of VP may be his only saving grace and our chance to win in November.

I agree with the above and the rest of your post. I wasn’t suggesting McCain’s status as a combat pilot and former POW qualifies him for anything at all except our unyielding gratitude, and yes, our respect. I wasn’t a McCain supporter in the primaries either. Heck, I couldn’t find anyone to support on the Republican side. HOWEVER, he’s our guy now, and the more I learn about Sen. Obama, the more I am certain — absolutely certain — that McCain will make a better president of this country. So we can piss and moan and call him Juan, and then get good and drunk next January watching Obama and his America-hating racist wife move into the White House, or we can get seriously behind McCain. Those are your two choices: President McCain or President Obama, and the latter would be an epic disaster.

So, I think McCain will push his stuff again, in fact he said that if his same bill comes in front of him as president he will sign it. Then he tried to say, but that won’t happen since people want the border secured frist (implying congress won’t dare do it again). But if Congress does dare do it again and again till we are all tired of fighting, Mr, McCain will be happy to sign it.

Oh, I just remember another McCain misstep or truth maybe. During one of the debates he said that if an illegal happened to “unfortunatelly” get deported. A decidedly un-Christian motivation, my opinion.

NONE of you here could have endured what this man endured.

The “true conservatives” here who are willingly trashing John McCains’ military service to discredit his character in the name of politics, are an absolute disgrace.

    May God forgive you.

Said with great clarity. I’m still waiting for anyone to produce evidence showing that McCain is to the left of Oh!b♥m♥ on any issue.

I think you’ve been asking someone to produce this evidence for weeks now, haven’t you?

You won’t get it because it simply doesn’t exist.

But it certainly isn’t going to stop “true conservatives” from posting one RINO screed after another decrying John McCains’ “liberalism”.

After all, why bother with something as dull as evidence when wild-eyed histrionics in a group setting will suffice?

You know what they say: you tell a lie often enough, and it becomes “truth”.
