It has been happening for years–the targeting of military recruiting stations. It happened again this morning:

An explosive device caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above.

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m., shattering the station’s glass entryway. No one was injured.

“If it is something that’s directed toward American troops than it’s something that’s taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate,” said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.

He said no one was inside the station, where the Marines, Air Force and Navy also recruit.

Witnesses staying at a Marriott hotel four blocks away said they could feel the building shake with the blast.

“I was up on the 44th floor and I could feel it. It was a big bang,” said Darla Peck, 25, of Portland, Oregon.

“It shook the building. I thought it could have been thunder, but I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke so I knew it was an explosion,” said Terry Leighton, 48, of London, who was staying on the 21st floor of the Marriot.

Members of the police department’s bomb squad and fire officials gathered outside the station in the early morning darkness, and police cars and yellow tape blocked drivers — most of them behind the wheels of taxicabs — from entering one of the world’s busiest crossroads. Police began allowing some traffic through around the start of rush hour.

Though subway cars passed through the Times Square station without stopping in the early hours of the investigation, normal service was soon restored, with some delays.

The recruiting station, located on a traffic island surrounded by Broadway theaters and chain restaurants, has occasionally been the site of anti-war demonstrations, ranging from silent vigils to loud rallies.

Ed’s got more. Here’s the NYT blog coverage.

Reader Laura e-mails:

Just up checking your blog and watching ABC’s GMA (a rarity for me).

Their coverage of the Times Square bombing of a military recruiting office just now (7am) barely made mention of WHAT was actually bombed. Dianne Sawyer went out of her way, it seemed to me, NOT to ask about WHAT was bombed. They went on and on about a “man on a bike” and the bomb itself (I’m a journalist and believe me, it was the worst report I’ve ever seen) but NOTHING about the target.

Their conflicted-ness was so apparent…here is a bomb, felt by people in their own studio when it went off, so they are shaken, yet only ONE reference, buried in the middle of the report to the recruiting station that was trashed. They also made an attempt, imo, to link this with the bombing of the British and Mexican consulates.

The NYPost:

The center is normally staffed by two noncommissioned officers but was empty at the time of the explosion, said Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, the commander of army recruiting operations in Manhattan.

“If it is something that is directed toward American troops, then it’s something that’s taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate,” he said.

Members of the police department’s bomb squad and fire officials gathered outside the recruiting station, which has occasionally been the site of anti-war demonstrations, ranging from silent vigils to loud rallies.

Police cars and yellow tape initially blocked drivers from entering one of the world’s busiest crossroads, though some traffic was allowed through around the start of rush hour.

Guests at the Marriott Marquis on 46th Street said they heard a “big bang” and could feel the building shake. A large plume of smoke was also visible after the explosion, they said.

Terry Leighton, 49, from London, England, said he was on the 21st floor of the hotel when he heard the blast and looked out a window.

“I thought it could have been thunder,” he said. “I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke. So I knew it was an explosion.”

Darla Teck, 25, was on the 44th floor of the hotel. “There was a big bang. I felt it,” she said.

Yesterday: Phony draft card-burning.

Update: NYC Mayor Bloomberg weighs in: “The fact that this appears deliberately targeted at the recruiting station insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world.”

Update: Bob Owens concludes, “This was an act of domestic terrorism.”

Update 2:04pm Eastern. NYPD has released security video in Times Square showing the man on the bike immediately before the explosion. A 10-speed bike has also been found in the vicinity.

Update 2:44pm Eastern. Allah’s posted the surveillance video.

Update 7:52pm Eastern. Politico reports that 8 Democrats in the House received letters and a photo of the targeted Times Square recruitment center…the Dems were NY representatives…

Fox reporting more than 8 House Democrats may have received letters and photo of the recruitment station, with an anti-Iraq war screed proclaiming, “Happy New Year, We did it.”

Capitol Hill postmaster and FBI investigating whether any Senate offices received the mailing.

More on the letter:

The Associated Press obtained a copy of an e-mail from the office of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to other lawmakers Thursday that reads:

“A few offices on the House side have received a letter today addressed to ‘Members of Congress’ with a picture of a man standing in front of the Times Square recruiting station that was bombed in New York today with the statement ‘We did it.’ He is standing in front of it with his arms spread out and he’s attached his political manifesto.”

The e-mail says the recipients were told to leave the letters alone and call police.

Update 9:39pm Eastern. Newsday has a few more details…

In an e-mail Thursday night, U.S. Capitol Police advised all members of Congress to be on the lookout for a 5 by 8 inch manila envelope with two $1 stamps on it that might contain the letter, which the e-mail said has been screened and poses no harm to the lawmakers.

The letters added a new dimension to the blast with an improvised explosive device made from army surplus materials at the recuitment station that caused minor damage but no injuries.

Aides to Long Island members of Congress said they had not gotten one of the letters taking credit for the blast.

The photo in the letter was the kind commonly sent as a holiday greeting card, showing a white man with thin graying hair in a striped flannel shirt and jeans, the Associated Press said, quoting an unnamed Democratic aide whose office received the letter. The card said: “Happy New Year. We Did It.”

Capitol Hill police, the FBI and postal inspectors are investigating the letters.

“Within the past twenty-four hours, a number of letters have begun arriving at various Congressional Offices on Capitol Hill,” the Capitol Police e-mail says. “The letters contain a reference to the military recruiting office in New York City.”

Authorities have not disclosed the content of the lengthy letters, said by sources to be between 10 and 30 pages long, that arrived in the office

My Dad was an Air Force recruiter in the 60s in San Francisco and I remember the long hours he put in back then. Talking with many that work this special duty assignment today not much has changed except that during the 60s the Air Force was turning men away trying to avoid their draft call-up. The hard part is trying to find qualified candidates for Basic Training thanks to the dumbing down of America by the NEA, but they still manage to fill the ranks. If this keeps up recruiters should start getting tax exclusion and combat pay in country. Next time we go into Boise Mrs. Boomer and I will have to bring some goodies by and thank the recruiters for their service again.

First we saw Code-Pink in Berkeley, CA swarm around and set up a continual protest against the USMC. Then we have crowds invading a recruiting station in Washington DC. Whatever action the Feds take will be colored by the fact that this is an election year, and that the name of the game is politics.

The only good thing about this is that if the perp is ever brought to justice, it won’t be in a city or state court, it will be in a Federal court.

The scary thing, though, is that if “they,” whoever “they” might be, get away with this, the next IED might be aimed at the recruiters themselves.

Maybe that’s what it will take to wake people up. Not the government – the citizens of this great country. They need to open their eyes and take a good look around them. Reminds me of a Phillip K. Dick title: “The Sheep Look Up” – that’s what we need.

Take the time today – make the time – call or visit your local recruiting office. Let them know you’re there and that you’ve got their back! Don’t just TALK the talk – Walk the walk! Let them know you support them. They will appreciate it, believe me.

It’s clear enough that the attacker was motivated more by the desire to send a message than to effectuate any “real” consequence.

Wasn’t it thoughtful that the perpetrator decided to stick it to the military by doing a “bike by” instead of a driveby? At least he/she reduced their carbon footprint at the same time they intentionally increased that of the NYC Police Department and those that have to clean up after their destruction. Now that’s domestic terrorism with a “conscience”….

Now the peace protestors are bombing their enemies for peace. While the bulk of peace protestors are basically goofy college kids thoughtlessly riding the protest fad and treating demonstrations like Mardi Gras, the hard core who organize the protests are violent thugs. I’ve been physically assaulted twice at “peace” marches in DC by ANSWER organizers or independent communists. In fact, “peace” marches are the only place I’ve been attacked in my adult life. It’s interesting that I served in the military for eight years and nobody laid a hand on me in anger but I’ve been to ten big demonstrations and been attacked twice by the demonstrators. Peace demonstrations are far more violent than the military.

What is ignored by the media is that “peace” demonstrations are not conducted by peaceable people, but rather by very angry, undisciplined, irrational people who misbehave as much as they can to get their way. They have no respect for any other point of view nor the people who hold them. Fortunately, they are largely cowards who back down immediately when confronted. Most of the time.

“Peace” demonstrations are not for peace, but are simply demonstrations against America. You will never see a protest sign criticizing America’s opponents in a “peace” demonstration, no matter how grisly the violence of our enemies. You will not even see the other side mentioned. You can go to dozens of “peace” demonstrations against the war in Iraq without seeing Saddam’s name on a protest sign.

This bombing of the military recruiting center in Manhattan reveals the true face of the “peace” movement, which is anything but pacifist.

Burning phony draft cards, protests against the war and our military, and now physical attacks on our servicemen-women and recruiting centers, are all the result of liberal professors and college instructors attempting to vicariously relieve the sixties by recreating them through our kids.

College students today are bombarded with leftist instruction that teaches them to not only distrust and question everything American, but to revile our country’s most basic values and institutions, such as the military.

These professors have corrupted the instructional concept of opposing viewpoints, and misused it to present the U.S. to their students as either merely evil or super evil, often tingeing such messages with a level of negative emotion that leads motivated students to act against the perceived oppressor – their own government.

If these colleges and their far-left instructors are allowed to continue filling our students’ minds with unopposed liberal hash, while parents sit idly by worrying about how to pay for the garbage their kids are learning, then we can only expect to see more events like this bombing in NYC, and worse.

But the left-wing terrorists get all kinds of breaks and charming profiles in the paper. Bill Ayers and his wife are hanging with the Obamessiah, working cushy academic jobs, and living posh lifestyles. The anti-war and anti-military Democrats have been actively violent for at least half a century. The level and amount of violence just ebbs and flows like some type of evil tide that rises whenever the USA has to defend itself. To be blunt, the leadership of the Democrat Party has aided and abetted the American terrorists by excusing or even openly supporting their acts. This bombing in NYC is straight out of the “make love, not war” liberal socialist hippie generation playbook that fills their drug scarred minds with a sense of entitlement to do whatever they want because they are righteous in their own sight.

The left wing elite in this country, with the likes of Clinton, Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, Soros – and most of the education and media establishment – are bent on destroying the very foundation of America. From FISA to Iraq to Gitmo to this act of home grown violence, they are all in the same anti-American camp (although they like to say that it is just because they hate Bush so much).

The Democrats have a real hatred for a free people acting freely. To them, the only way to deal with this is to slowly strangle the freedoms that have made America great and to turn America from “the land of the free and the home of the brave” into some communistic paradise run by the likes of Castro and Chavez,- or better yet, Stalin and Mao.
