Maybe this has been mentioned in this thread already, and if so, sorry, but... does anyone really think this is the first time he's done this? That he got the idea and inclination after becoming the Governor of New York? Probably not, I'd say. This story will last quite awhile, even if he does resign.

I think that Spitzer's experience is par for the course in NY politics. Albany has been inefficient and corrupt for years. The audacity that both NY GOP and Dem's have taxing the crap out of NYer's is just appalling. NY is an expensive state to live in, from cradle to grave. If this man used taxpayer money to fund his trysts, then he should be held accountable.

I agree with the following:

I hope she MORE than makes up for it when she gets to her lawyer’s office in the morning!

This is the absolute worse thing to happen to a married woman (well, except in Mrs. McGreevey's case her husband ending up cheating on her with a gay man). Spitzer not only wantonly destroyed his marriage but his family. The trust is gone and the last thing Mrs. Spitzer should be doing is "standing by her man." It smacks of PR calculation to present a united front if nothing else and also holds true for other political wives like Mrs. Vitter and Mrs. Craig.

It's almost as if someone is telling Silda Spitzer that in order to save her husband's career she must stand by him. What she should be thinking about is getting tested for STD's or HIV or both. I'm surprised nobody has brought this up. I'm even more surprised that she would even want to be in close proximity to a man she trusted for 20 years, a man who paid for sex, and who shared his body (and any diseases) with her.

As a woman, if my husband had done this to me (and I'm married) I would have left him and taken any children we had together with me... after kicking him where the sun don't shine. I would then file for a divorce and take him to the cleaners. I grew up with infidelity in my own family and watched a beloved sister-in-law's marriage implode because her husband cheated on her.

Again... while I sympathize with Mrs. Spitzer's situation, I think she's making a mistake. She should move on with her life and leave Eliot Spitzer in the dust.

What most people miss in this drama is that Eliot Spitzer abused public office, tax-money and civic position, meant to serve the people, for his and his family's profit. Why wouldn't his wife stand beside him? She probably is in on all of this. And the daughters also? Didn't they all feed off of public trust and money?
While Eliot Spitzer is guilty, the family is not exactly blameless.

rage, I got your message, no worries.
I appreciate your words, and I also appreciate those who have gone to a dark place in life and are able to return a better person.

My only concern (through personal observation) is that, like McGreevy, Spitzer is one bad, detached, dude. Other people's concerns don't play a part in his decision making. And like a deceiving junkie (or Bill Clinton with a 10 lb. Bible) the only reason he'll tell you that he's "seen the light" is to either get you off his back, or sucker you into believing in him again.

There's a special place in Hell for people like Eliot Spitzer...it's called the DNC.

I would like to see a focused report on the following:

1. How many cases of prostitution were tried under his reign and what were the typical sentences that were handed out?
2. Where did the money come from that he used to pay the escort service?
3. How many times did he use the escort service?
4. Why is the wife standing by him during the press conference?

I don't want to be too cynical but my feelings of sympathy go out only to his daughters. As for Mrs. Spitzer, how can you stand there and take the shame after you unwittingly(?) just been crapped on in public. And my disgust is with all the spouses (Dem or GOP) that stand there like zombies. Just once I would like the injured party to wallop the perp during the press conference.

Probably too much to ask for this far away from Christmas...
