While there will be events in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere, members of Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) feel it is important that there be a local event connected to our community’s long-standing, successful efforts to use education and action to oppose the war and undermine the militarism that leads to perpetual war(s).
On Wednesday, March 19, POG will be holding a torch-lit march to a modern day castle of abominations—our local military recruiting station. If the station remains open, we intend to evict it and everything inside of it, occupy the location, and transform it into something useful for the community. We’ll also be bringing a movable cage in which to confine military recruiters until they no longer pose a danger to our friends and neighbors. Of course, the station may be closed and recruiters may flee or hide behind the police apparatus that enables the war to continue. That is often the case, and we’ve seen in the past the overwhelming resources the state directs against these anniversary events because of their importance as a symbol of dissent. We believe in acting effectively, in confronting the war, at times and places of our choosing. When the state brings the resources necessary to suppress direct action against the war, it makes sense to hold a symbolic protest, and we still consider that a success, as it exposes the reality that it is ultimately on the local level that our countries war policy will be decided.

For an organization that claims 800 members, the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) are mounting a major assault, beginning Thursday, on America and its veterans. In a well-organized replay of their mentors’ Vietnam Veterans Against the War fraud-filled Winter Soldier hearings of 1971, the IVAW’s Winter Soldier II will seek to paint America and its servicepeople as the latest incarnation of Genghis Khan.
Out of the millions of servicemen and women who have served since September 11, 2001, membership in IVAW is open to any, regardless of whatever their role, in war theater or not, or type of discharge. And, still IVAW has just managed to recruit about 800 malcontents to air highly-painted and exaggerated charges.
Last week, a Reporters Guide to Winter Soldier II began distribution, to help prevent press credence to unsubstantiated accusations.
The scope of IVAW’s propaganda effort is emerging. Although they’ve pleaded, with yet unknown results, for allies in Congress to give them the widespread publicity that Senator Fulbright gave to John Kerry in April 1971, IVAW’s campaign is still on a scale that their elder VVAW teachers would envy. Thanks to today’s available communications technology and the Left’s alternative media, IVAW is not just dependent upon the mainstream media to spread its line.
Video and photographic evidence will also be presented, and the Winter Soldier testimony and panels will be broadcast live on nationally Pacifica Radio and satellite television station Free Speech TV Channel 9415. Streaming video on ivaw.org, as well as audio at KPFA.org and warcomeshome.org will enable people to tune in across the world.
The War Comes Home site, which I edit and is associated with the San Francisco Pacifica radio station KPFA, will also feature bios, photos, and videos of the speakers. Online audio clips of the testimonials will be posted as the hearing progresses.
Space at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland, the Washington, DC suburb where the hearings will occur, is limited. Antiwar activists are not being encouraged to show up, but are instead being asked to have listening or viewing parties in their own communities.
Independent journalist Aaron Glantz, a Foreign Policy In Focus contributor, has reported extensively from Iraq throughout the U.S. occupation. He is author of How America Lost Iraq (Penguin). He will co-host the Pacifica radio broadcast of the Winter Soldier hearings, along with veteran Aimee Allison and both of them will blog from the hearing at www.warcomeshome.org , where listeners will be able to leave their comments.
Denis Keohane has been doing yeoman’s work dissecting and documenting the IVAW’s march to Winter Soldier II. Today, in a lengthy column, Keohane exposes the deep involvement of freelance propaganda journalist Dahr Jamail lending his large English and Arabic audience to spreading the lies of Jesse MacBeth. Macbeth, before being exposed, lied about his service and that he’d committed atrocities against innocent Iraqis, and the IVAW supported MacBeth. The tracing of Jamail’s large international influence in spreading lies against America and its servicepeople is painstakingly described and linked by Keohane. Please please please let the recruiters be in the office when this lynch mob from Pittsburgh turns up - the action they claim they will take, if successful, will force the authorities to finally come down hard right across the nation against this sort of insurrection - and it’s well overdue. This is publicly premeditated plan of willful damage, violence, kidnapping, destruction of federal property and more - in fact why the FBI are not already arresting these people is beyond me - I guess they have to actually commit the crime first huh.
I wonder what legal right the military has to defend their ‘outposts’ against invasion from a violent threat like this - defense as in an armed response.

Morning all! I am finally back online to follow what is going on in the world and operating from Chandler, AZ after getting the living daylights scared out of me by my mother. She had a little stint in the hospital last Thursday night and early Friday morning I was flying down from the middle of nowhere Idaho to stay by her side. She has been discharged and is in full recovery while I stay with her until this Friday.
Michelle I have to join many other posters in urging you to contact the authorities due to this threat against your life. This is not the first time the unhinged have targeted you and we all know how dangerous these loony left wing nuts are to society. In the mean time pay attention to your surroundings and I hope you have a CCW.
Too bad we don’t have a real leader in the White House so Posse Commutates could be suspended along with an arming requirement for our threatened military recruiters. It is enough the men and women of the all volunteer military have to fight the enemy in far off lands (better then fighting them here), but the traitors among us have gotten out of hand and require a severe smack down. The use of deadly force is authorized on all military installations to protect military equipment and personnel, why should it not be any different in a recruiting station which while under lease is a military installation and government property. I am extremely disappointed in our non-functioning government agencies (DOJ, FBI, and law enforcement) that fail to stop, arrest, and prosecute these violent acts on those performing a special duty assignment that recruit willing volunteers for military service. Good thing I am nowhere near any of these events I seriously doubt I could keep the “Tasmanian Devil” (as some have described me when I am really PO) under control without putting some of these traitors into the hospital or morgue. I live in the South. What I call Small Town America, Glen Saint Mary, Florida. Population 489. We in “Glen” fly the flag. We love our troops. We support our President and our Congress no matter whose fat rear ends are in the seats.
We pray at the outset of public meetings. Our pastors are involved in public gatherings. Our locally elected officials are proud of American patriotism and Christian heritage. (But don’t tell the ACLU.)
We in the South recognize that our military is protecting us from enemies within and without. They — along with other public safety officials — volunteer to place themselves between the citizens and the harm that would befall them. They ask for little in return.
What’s not to love? I could go on, but I’ll save the rest for a future column.

A little proactive action by the FBI seems appropriate. Death threats on the internet. Children have been jailed for less such as typing fantasy novels.
Sadly, John Kerry’s “botched joke” was only mostly incorrect. This nomad fool is one of the few soldiers that fits Kerry’s description. Look at his posts - he can’t write more than a few sentences without using the f-bomb at least twice! Uneducated, and evidently missing a couple of light bulbs upstairs (or maybe just using eco-friendly ones??).

Whoever, when the United States is at war, willfully causes or attempts to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or willfully obstructs the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States, to the injury of the service or the United States, or attempts to do so—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.
(b) If two or more persons conspire to violate subsection (a) of this section and one or more such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be punished as provided in said subsection (a).
(c) Whoever harbors or conceals any person who he knows, or has reasonable grounds to believe or suspect, has committed, or is about to commit, an offense under this section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.
(d) This section shall apply within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States, and on the high seas, as well as within the United States.
I wonder if there is any way that the recruiting centers can be outfitted with an automatic sprinkler system which can be turned on and off from inside the building- to spray clear the side walk out front. You know, just to help keep it clean and tidy, like a good public place of business should. The fact that the spray would start at say, roof height and shoot cold water straight down, well…you would have to install it where it can fit easily, right?
That’s kidnapping isn’t it? Surely that will get him/them arrested?

Yet the Wiki article you cite has no attacks on record for 2008. Are there other sources you forgot to cite? Has there been even one assault against an abortion clinic in 2008?

I would like nothing more than for Congress to declare all military recruiting offices as property of the military, subject to miltary rules.
That would mean that they would, in effect, be considered the same as US embassies, and subject to the same rules authorizing the use of force…

Military recruitment is not a legitimate target for the anti-war crowd. If you want to protest, that’s fine. But when your protest includes plans to ‘take’ the space and illegaly imprison citizens, you have gone too far.
Let this serve as a warning to all the neo-hippie, misinformed, peaceniks out there: at some point, the average american will tire of your nonsense and start reacting with physically manifested anger.
Don’t like military recruiters? Then you aren’t an American and don’t deserve the protections and freedoms afforded you by our military.
Perhaps the best way to handle this is to pull up stakes in every city and state where these protestors thrive, then pull all federal funding and assistance.
Watch those areas crumble without the federal support.
Screw them. Don’t like freedom? Don’t approve of recruiters? Get the hell out of our country.
Let me explain something here: Pittsburgh is chock FULL of angry ex-steelworkers. We DO NOT bash our military around here. We may not be as culturally “enlightened” as some of the bigger cities in this country, but we hold our service personnel dear to us. I guaran - friggin - tee that someone will get seriously hurt at this deplorable gathering. It will be from some ex-military man (maybe woman?) who is gonna bust someone in their mouth for spouting off about our brave men and women serving our nation. We have class here….but not too much to make us rule out violence when we feel it is necessary to make OUR point.
LGM ,, when the Allies liberated the nazi death camps and I suppose some German troops and officers were killed protecting them. Was it wrong for the allies to kill those Germans even though they were slaughtering innocents? You don’t seem to mind the slaughter that goes on in the abortion clinics. Another question for you LGM who is responsible for the deaths in Iraq? Not sure how many of the troops use blow themselves up in civilian centers in the name of Allah. I have never heard American troops doing that so what murders are they doing now?

By my count, there have been at least 10 separate incidents of violence directed at military recruiters within the last 365 days.

I know this is a debatable issue however legally the USA is *not* at war; a Congressional Declaration of War is required for laws like 18 USC 115 §2388 to be used.
Certainly there are many other things the Bush regime could be doing about disruptive antiwar protestors such as obtaining injunctions in Federal court against groups and persons known to cross the line between free speech and unlawful actions such as vandalism and obstruction of sidewalks, roads and railways….which it TTBOMK has *not* done.
The War Party hardly learned a g*d* thing from Vietnam, namely a war of the scale and intensity of Vietnam and Iraq II involving occupation of foreign territory with a large number of indigenous hostiles requires a Congressional Declaration of War followed by war powers and anti-sedition laws …. and full mobilization.
Absent the above, there will never be success for America, only for its enemies which are strengthened by the internal hatreds, loss of American prestige and economic chaos which wars like Vietnam and Iraq cause.
