Video: God Bless America

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 13, 2008 10:03 PM

If you’re sick of hearing Jeremiah Wright’s hate-filled voice damning America and want to get his vitriol out of your system before hitting the sack, here’s Kate Smith singing “God Bless America” before the 6th game of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals in Philadelphia.

In the same patriotic vein, here is a link that was forwarded to me of some group called the “Cactus Cuties” singing before a basketball game. I’ve never heard of them before, but this is one of the best renditions of the national anthem that I have ever heard, especially when you consider who is singing:

I think the majority of the country still does. They go about their business quietly doing what needs to be done for their country and fellow man, without looking for any glory. The good samaritan, if you will.
It’s the minority that hates the country who has to shout to make their voices be heard and force their views on everyone else, when no one really wants to listen to them.

Thank you Michelle Malkin for your love of this country. Wouldn’t it be great to have Kate stand up and sing that at the Democratic National Convention! I know she is gone, RIP, but I’d love to see and hear what went on if that would happened! God truly has blessed America. Woe be tide to those who take that for granted and squander it away for selfish gain and power.

#22, are you kidding? But then agan our schools aren’t doing a great job (I say this as a former teacher who frequently got in trouble for digressing out of the History text book). During WW2, this country was very patriotic and scum like the pinkos, world can’t wait, the ws2 group would have all been smacked upside the head for starters and would have been in jail for the duration of the war. Back then we had patriotic actors who went to war, (Clark Gable, BG Jimmy Stewart, Tyronne Power, etc) and actresses like Carole Lombarad (who was killed on a War Bond Tour when her plane crashed) Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Claudette Colbert, etc. who would go to the Hollywood Canteen and spend time dancing and talking to the boys getting ready to go overseas. We also had music that uplifted the country like Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Ella, and Kay Keyser. But Kate Smith was famous for her rendition of “God Bless America” and there were still enough people around in 1974 who appreciated how her music got those who served and those who were on the homefront through the war. I really don’t know if you’re kidding or not but it is sad that WW2 is now a chapter in a text book and much more time is spent on touchy feely things. We have let this happen, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Right, Terrig. There were “stars” who were on the Left (Henry Fonda), but they had their own opinions, not opinions that had to be on the news every day, or shared with our enemies. Kate Smith was a great singer, and she has been missed. She also didn’t go to Germany during WW2 to man an anti-aircraft gun to shoot down a bomber. The people who served in the war, like my Dad, are leaving us daily. Soon, they’ll all be gone and the war will be forgotten; its lessons lost. Many singers like her, sang for the troops, and really helped morale, not run to Italy to have their pic taken with a dictator. Today, we don’t need a big war to be defeated. We’re doing that to ourselves very nicely. Listening to Smith sing “God Bless America” may soon be lost too, replaced by a singing “Wright” belting out, “God Da** America”.

On September 13, 2001, I had to drive for a business trip instead of fly — for obvious reasons. As I am passing an RV dealer along the Interstate, their sign flashed the following support for the nation:

    God
    [flash]
    Bless America
    [flash]
    President Bush
    [flash]
    Kick their @$$!

Ok, so it doesn’t compare to Kate’s signing, but boy did it help lift my spirits for a long cross-country journey.

Our own Bessie Kvidera sang God Bless America every Memorial Day in the village park where everyone (300+) gathered for a service after the parade. We had many WWII heroes for a little town!

When one teaches History (as a class it should be capped) one teaches the nuts and bolts of the situation but in WW2 the music, movies, etc. was very important to the guys and gals fighting and those on the homefront. Sorry you missed out on that tidbit, it may have added to your overall educational experience.
