Wrong-headed Wright’s church plays martyr. Obama’s playing the card, too. Natch. Race-mongers’ Rule Number One: When exposed, shout “VICTIM” at the top of lungs:
Otis Moss III, the current pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, used his pulpit to defend his congregation and its past minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., from a wave of controversy stemming from inflammatory statements made by Wright.
“We have listened and watched as the wonderful work of our church has been vilified this week,” he told about 3,000 congregants on Palm Sunday morning. “This week should be special for us because I guess we know a little something about crucifixion.”
The church also released a statement that began: “Nearly three weeks before the 40th commemorative anniversary of the murder of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.’s character is being assassinated in the public sphere because he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe.”
Bill Kristol distills the essence of Obama:
The more you learn about him, the more Obama seems to be a conventionally opportunistic politician, impressively smart and disciplined, who has put together a good political career and a terrific presidential campaign. But there’s not much audacity of hope there. There’s the calculation of ambition, and the construction of artifice, mixed in with a dash of deceit — all covered over with the great conceit that this campaign, and this candidate, are different.

More on Obama’s reported attendance at one of Wright’s Hate America sermons from Ronald Kessler. If the report is accurate, Obama needs to be pressed on it.
If it isn’t accurate, Kessler and Newsmax need to correct and retract it.

The Los Angeles Times blog reports the Obama campaign’s denial that Obama attended the July 22 service; it states that Obama was in Miami that day. (Davis’s story was originally posted in August 2007; the Obama campaign apparently did not take notice of it until yesterday.) In fact, according to a Washington Post listing, Obama was scheduled to address the national council of La Raza’s annual conference on July 22, 2007. The time of Obama’s scheduled appearance is listed as “n/a.” Mickey Kaus has posted a La Raza press release listing Obama’s scheduled appearance at 1:30 p.m. There is also video of Obama’s appearance. As Kaus says, the ball is in Kessler’s court.

I’ve contacted the Secret Service Public Affairs Office to see if they will be able to confirm or deny a protective detail guarding Obama at TUCC in Chicago on July 22, 2007 as they seem to be in the most credible position to resolve these claims, but I do not know if they are able to address such concerns, and even if they are about to confirm of deny Obama’s attendance, I’m not sure that playing a game of “gotcha” pinning down Obama as an attendee at one of Wright’s more explosive sermons is even of major relevance.
Certainly, confirming Obama’s attendance would be a huge blow to his credibility as he stated categorically that he never attended church on days where Wright delivered one of his more inflammatory sermons, but that almost seems beside the point.
Whether or not he was there for one of “those” sermons, Barack Obama attended Wright’s church for 20 years, and it is implausible that he was completely unaware of his rhetoric and radicalism during that entire time period.
Barack Obama is forcing us to chose between one of two narratives. Either he:
1. attended a church for two decades that featured a radical minister preaching a seemingly separatist and occasionally anti-American “Black Value System” (which curiously, was scrubbed from the church’s web site over the weekend), considered Wright a mentor, was married by him, has his children baptized by him, and added him in an official capacity to his Presidential campaign (though in a largely ceremonial role), without ever really knowing anything about him or his beliefs, or;
2. Barack was aware of Wright’s pronouncements and beliefs and agreed with him enough that he was a member of Wright’s congregation for 20 years, only to then see Obama threw Wright “under the bus” when those beliefs became a threat to Obama’s presidential campaign.Which is it?
The latter seems far more plausible than the former, with or without the media being able to pin down Obama as having attended Wright’s more bombastic recorded sermons.
Obama either displays a Gumpish cluelessness and a lack of self-awareness as a human being (not exactly sought-after traits in a President), or he agrees with the teaching of Wright to the extent that he became a member of his church and spent the last two decades as part of a congregation that was captured loudly applauding during extremist and conspiracy theory-laced sermons.

The indications are the elections and electoral vote count. None the less, we are on the same side, we don’t want a Democrat in the White House. McCain is a Democrat, but he’s an acceptable Democrat over the other 2 running.

If Romney had a personal spiritual advisor akin to Jeremiah Wright, I imagine you would have heard those “cries of racism” that you are searching for.
Please notice that the outrage in this particular case is over Obama’s deep ties, faith and support for an overt racist like Jeremiah Wright, and not the United Church of Christ as a whole.
In order to formulate a stronger argument, you need to construct a tighter analogy.

To be clear, I’m speaking to the larger audience here, not the “liberal trolls,” amongst whom I’m no doubt cast. If anyone here who considers themselves conservative and called Romney out for the prejudices of his church, I welcome their input.
I’m just pointing out an indisputable fact – the Church of LDS had a long-standing policy of racial segregation, a policy that existed during Romney’s lifetime. To the Mormon church’s credit, they have moved past it. Good for them.
Here is my point – you are willing to look past that ugliness and see the good things the Church of LDS has done, as do I. Why not grant Wright’s church the same amount of understanding?
I’m not condoning Wright’s remarks. I’m simply saying if you focus only on the negatives, while disregarding any positives – contrary to your treatment of Romney and the Mormon church – you’re not playing fair.

I agree with you-one racist sermon from a pastor and I am outta here.
Sadly; this happened last October when a pastors adopted daughter made an asian slur and his wife failed to say anything about, even after I said something. If the kids are speaking racial slurs in public and the parent isn’t saying something to stop it-this gives me cause for concern. Ironically I did say something that was brushed off by the mom and daughter.
So if a pastor can make .87% of their sermons with a racist intent; someone please explain why Don Imus was fired after only one racial slur to the womens Rutgers basketball team and he has had a radio show 5 days/week for at least 15 years.
20 shows a month x 12 months x 15 years=3,600 shows and only one had a racial slur and that comes out to 0.000277(seven repeats) Values don’t include his Imus return to the air with WABC in NY

If people are going to trash Obama — or any of the candidates, for that matter — I would prefer they do it via the candidates’ own policy stances, and for things the candidates themselves say, rather than what someone in their church says. That is ultimately what matters most to me when I vote.
I don’t care about the Romney’s relationship to the Church of LDS, I don’t care about the Church of LDS’ past policy on race relations, and I don’t care about Obama’s ties to a pastor who said — in Obama’s own words today — some very stupid things.
I fail to see how quibbling over whether or not Obama was in church on such-and-such date should is important. But I’m also not the one who keeps bringing it up. Since you all did, I’m simply turning the tables and reframing the question around someone from “your team.”
As for Imus, he worked [works? I think he's back on air now] for a for-profit organization who is at least somewhat accountable to their viewership, and certainly to their advertizers. And if they call for Imus’ head, well, that’s how the free market works.
One last thought, with [hopefully] a little more clarity….
Up until just a couple decades ago [when Romney was an adult, capable of deciding his faith for himself] the Mormon Church had a very well-known policy in favor of racial segregation. There may not be a cache of you tube clips available to conjure up a montage of juicy soundbites, but considering this was a matter of formal policy, you simply cannot argue Romney was unaware of it. Whether or not it was a cause for personal conflict for him, I do not know; but I do know he stuck with his faith despite its bigoted policy.
I’m not very familiar with the Mormon church, but as some have noted above, they do some good things, and I have no reason to dispute that. And I do NOT believe that, even despite carrying an embarrassingly out-moded stance on racial integration well into the late 20th century, every single member of the church should be held accountable for those beliefs. It’s a matter of weighing the good vs. the bad, and for many, the good wins. I can respect that of Romney, just as I respect that of Obama. I just wish you all could do the same.

Are you saying that if a White candidate actively associated with a White racist/ separatist “church” for 20 years, and took his spiritual/ life advice, and inspiration, from a KKK-like pastor for over 20 years who presided over his wedding and baptized his shorties, and said things like 9/11 was payback, etc, etc, blablabla, you would not see this as indicative of a seriously flawed and racist mind?
Guilt by association means a one time meeting or an endorsement not sought, etc. Obama and his wife are racist to their core.
I actually do believe that Mitt Romney’s link to LDS was something to be looked into. As JWS said prior, if he was friends with somebody in the KKK who he took advice from, etc., I do think it’s an issue (for both Romney and Obama).
Character was one of the major items that the Founding Fathers wanted in a President.
I DO NOT care if he was/wasn’t in church on such & such a date. Frankly, people are just looking for that Ken Starr gotcha moment.

Let me provide you with this one; Trent Lott who said, “When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either”
How many speeches and discussions in his Senate life has Trent Lott given. For the statement above, he had to step down from his leadership position?
Yes, just so you know, when Senator Dodd said his remarks for Robert Byrd, a former KKK member, I didn’t take his remarks to be racist as well.
The final test for all should be the following, it’s really quite easy.
Replace the word Black with White and see what would happen.
Funny thing. I was thinking of the irony here. What should a peace loving sermon from a pastor vs. a true “Uniter” from a Marine.

Here’s the flaw in your logic. The LDS church had a policy (doctrine?)that was exclusionary to blacks. Being a member of the LDS church, Romney couldn’t simply go to another LDS church to escape this church policy – it would be the same no matter which LDS church he chose to attend. Plus if memory serves me correctly, the LDS policy wasn’t that blacks couldn’t join the church, it was that they couldn’t be members of the church heirarchy. (Someone who might have better knowledge of the situation, please correct me if I’m wrong about this.)
Obama could EASILY choose another church to attend – one that not only has a pastor who doesn’t spew the racist crap that Rev. Wright does, but one that is inclusive of all races. I’m betting the Rev. Wright’s church doesn’t have ANY white people in it’s heirarchy (like the LDS church does now).
Care to take that bet, huggy?
Point being, Obama could easily choose a different congregation to belong to and not have to change his Christian faith. For Romney to do that, he would have had to change his faith entirely.
