Recreate ‘68 threatens Democrat convention in Denver
“When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don’t blame us for that.”
Remember that quote. Protest organizers from “Recreate ‘68″ are throwing a tantrum over the Democrat Party’s permit process. Will they ignore it as an idle threat? Or, keeping in mind the history of left-wing violence against law enforcement, will they take the nutballs seriously for once? Via the Rocky Mountain News (hat tip - reader Katharine):
Denver could face a “dangerous situation” on the first day of the Democratic National Convention, war protesters said Thursday, after losing a coveted permit for Civic Center to the convention host committee.
“When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don’t blame us for that,” said Glenn Spagnuolo, an organizer for the Re-create 68 Alliance.
“Blame the Democrats for trying to silence dissent in the city of Denver.”
The lottery for permits to protest, pray or hold other events in city parks during the DNC Aug. 24 through 28 resumed Thursday after the city bungled the drawing Tuesday by accidentally leaving out some of the applicants’ names.
The do-over went smoothly.
But when Jenny Anderson, event planner for the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee, won the permit for Civic Center for a kick-off Aug. 24, Spagnuolo accused the committee of creating a “very serious, dangerous situation . . . for everybody.”
Re-create 68 - which has promised demonstrations that will rival those at the bloody 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago - will be at Civic Center on Aug. 24, with or without a permit, he said.
Via Wolf, more coverage from the Denver Post:
War protesters promised a massive conflict at Civic Center on the eve of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, after losing in a lottery process Thursday that awarded a permit for the park to the party planner for Denver’s host committee.
“We’re having our protest at Civic Center,” said a livid Glenn Spagnuolo, a lead organizer for the group Re-create 68. “We’re not going to give up Civic Center park to the Democrats. . . . They are creating a very dangerous situation.”
Re-create 68 and its affiliates packed the random lottery with applications to better its chances, but the single entry by Jenny Anderson for the host committee won for Sunday, Aug. 24. The convention will be held Aug. 25-28 at the Pepsi Center.
ExtrasSpagnuolo has been meeting monthly with city officials for a year, hoping to win the right to use Civic Center throughout the convention. He says 50,000 war protesters are coming for a march from Civic Center to the Pepsi Center on Aug. 24.
He said Thursday that he would not respect the host committee’s permit and would occupy the park, even if it forced police to intervene.
Referring to the $50 million in federal security money slated for the convention, Spagnuolo said Denver police would need “$25 million to protect the Pepsi Center and $25 million to protect Civic Center.”

The self-destruction of the Democrat party continues. Their candidate did really well in ‘68, didn’t he?
quite the
veiledthreat there..I can’t wait to see how the MSM will blame it on Bush. Oh the rage!
Golly gee Beav, I feel so sorry for those honest, America loving, democrats pickle they are in.
The cops do know why they have scopes on their rifles don’t they?
It seems from the story that she was treated like the common criminal she is. There are lots of horrific crime stories.
Who is paying for these 50,000 thousand protesters to show up? Food, lodging, transportation, logistics, security. PR,…all very expensive. Who pays this $10 million bill? This is the huge uncovered story of the 2008 conventions. I’m sure that any reporter or investigator would find an easy connection between CAIR and the faux Islamic charities, and all the Soros fooundations. like MoveOn,
The MSM. bloggers, and talk radio have all forgotten Watergate’s dictum, ” Follow The Money!”
Anyone..anyone….Buelller… Buelller… anyone….?
I would think that the FBI would have this guy in handcuffs making those kind of threats. There are going to be a bunch of government leaders at this thing and this guy is predicting violence?
And in typical terrorist fashion, he blames everyone else for his violent actions.
Charge him with conspiracy to commit terrorism and send him to gitmo.
As much as I’m going to enjoy the democrats implode, I don’t wish to see anyone injured or even killed. I remember ‘68, not pretty.
Perhaps they have purchased the Mugabe handbook on winning elections. When you can’t persuade the population with ideas scare the crap out of them so they will either vote for you or stay home.
That democrap sounds like a terrorist. I think it would be prudent to take him at his word, that he would commit violence, and just arrest him and let him rot in jail.
You should have seen the giddy excitement in the Denver media, and their buddies the local democrat politicos, when Denver was selected for the convention.
Can’t wait to see them choking on tear gas this summer.
Once again, the Revolution devours its children. The Democrats never fully recovered from 1968. Sen. McCain is one lucky man.
Between this post & the other one today (A cop-targeting domestic terrorist is freed; animal rights terrorists run amok) the U.S. is beginning to sound an awful lot like the religion of perpetual peace with their “rage boys”. When are we going to put a stop to all this nonsense? Or are we just going to sit back & let all of the nutters take over the country?
Uhhh, wrong thread?
I’d just like to point out that both conventions use the euphamistically named “free speech zones.” It’s a disgraceful practice. One shouldn’t need a permit to have a peaceful protest.
Of course, this doesn’t seem like a peaceful protest.
“There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well
please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take
the consequences.” — *P.J. O’Rourke*
I remember ‘68 well, being a college student from Chicago at the time. The violence hardly came from the protesters. It came from the heavy handed police given orders from the corrupt mayor, Richard J. Daley. He had the cops walk through camp sites with clubs “waking” up the protestors and hauling them off on buses to a makeshift jail.
Knowing what we know today, the anti-Viet Nam protests was well justified. Many of my friends were drafted, only to be killed in Viet Nam in a war that the President himself knew was unwinnable.
The situation is different today, but let us never turn our back on peaceful protests. When we do, we become just like China.
Can’t they just bring that cage they used in 04′? I thought that was a nice touch..If you want to protest, do it from within this cage that looks like a prison cell!
Where will Al Sharpton lead his protest march without a permit?
To be clear, peaceful protest is good. But making threats of violence before hand only makes preparations for the protest “more intense”. And if/when trouble happens, all those taken to the emergency room can thank Mr. Spagnuolo.
Mr P, thanks for the contribution from the “useful idiot” peanut gallery.
I’m not going to rehash something from 40 years ago…. except to say I hope these new “useful idiots” get the same “Mayor Daley” treatment.
You deserved it then. They deserve it now!!!
Why don’t the Democrats just go ahead and officially rename their party the DoOver® party?
The Dems brought this on themselves. They played to these left wing nuts, made promises, and now they want to shut them out.
As for Spagnuolo - send him to Gitmo so he can be with his friends.
BTW. I wonder if their 50,000 number will be like the 100’s of thousands these nuts said would be in DC March, 2007. I think the count was closer to 7,500.
Wow, such mixed feelings on this…
The right of Freedom of Speech is a bedrock fundamental right that has been eroded over the years…
Needing a “permit” to protest, telling you where and when, sure disturbs me…
But what disturbs me even more is that TAX dollars are going for security for a PRIVATE organization. Any use of Tax dollars for fund Political Partys has the effect of perptuating their stranglehold on American Politics.
The ‘Republican’ Party will once again regain its strength. True colors are being shown now and will be in Denver. If the majority of people in this country actually condone the possible activity then we are in trouble.
My Grandfather was a delegate at that convention! Yikes!
Babbledabble,
Don’t worry too much about the ‘nutters’. They’re always around. It’s just that, between elections the media doesn’t give them as much coverage. During an election they have sudden media ‘credibility’.
If this is what’s planned for the Dem convention, just imagine what they intend to do for the Republican convention!
i live about 3/4 of a mile from the pepsi center in denver. can i tell you how excited i am about this convention? crazies.
This promises to be more fun than watching the fans at a European Soccer (Sock Herr) match.
Stocking up on Crackerjacks n’ Hotdogs
This is the way ‘68 started. The Yippies’ (Youth International Party) had their permits cancelled and Jerry Rubin vowed to come to Chicago and they did some 200k strong. It was McCarthy vs the party hack Humphrey inside the convention. It was Dailey and the Cook County Sheriff (Joe Woods the brother of Rosemary) against the press and everyone else outside.
Ironically Richard J Dailey had been begging LBJ for months to drop the war plank and avoid the hassle.
I have read “Steal this Book” by Abbie Hoffman. It reads like a “how to” guide for domestic terrorism. He was one of the main villains in the ‘68 protests.
If this protest follows Abbie’s guide again this time, Denver is in for some trouble.
On the bright side, reasonably prudent people who make up the majority of this great nation will look at that debacle and think twice about voting Democrat.
Rusty # 15 I’d just like to point out that both conventions use the euphamistically named “free speech zones.” It’s a disgraceful practice. One shouldn’t need a permit to have a peaceful protest.
Of course, this doesn’t seem like a peaceful protest.
Rusty, if as he claims it is 50K, then the city has a right & obligation to have them obtain a permit. Even if 100% peaceful that is a good sized crowd & just the logistics of people trying to drive in the area need to be considered. We do agree that it doesn’t sound like it will be peaceful.

Actually, if memory serves, in 1968 (I was not yet old enough to vote) George Wallace ran as a third party candidate and got a not insignificant number of votes.
Nixon had a relatively narrow popular vote victory over Humphrey, ~100,000 votes or so; more or less the popular vote margin by which Nixon had lost to Kennedy in 1960.
Having said that, I hope you are correct with the first part of your post.
As I’ve said before, when your opponents are in the process of destroying themselves, do not interfere.
Not to bring any sanity to this discussion, but it isn’t at all uncommon to require permits to use public parks and facilities, where demand exceeds capacity. At least they’re not caging them, like the Democrats did in 2004.
So, why should government leaders be a special case? Stop thinking of them as elites. We have enough problems with them thinking they’re some sort of higher class as it is. He’s threatening violence, and a lot of “common folk” will be the victims, not the well protected and sheltered “elites”.
No reason to think that all of those Wallace votes, or even a majority of them, would have gone to Humphrey. Without the very conservative Democrat Wallace, the movement of the South to Republicans would have happened far sooner. IMO, of course.
All I can say is, I’m bringing lawn chairs and coolers.
Oh, and a gas mask…
Gonna be a GREAT summer of ‘08!!

I agree with Romeo - “But what disturbs me even more is that TAX dollars are going for security for a PRIVATE organization”.
Let the Dems pay for it out of their own pockets.

True, although back then the Democrats were not quite as horribly socialist/loony/dangerous as they are today.
My point was that Humphrey did not lose by much at all.
However, I agree that “almost” counts only in horseshoes, hand grenades, and —–, as we used to say as uncivilized young male troglodytes.
You may very well be correct about Wallace’s delaying the South’s shift to Republicans.
What a year ‘68 was. My coworkers were NWAs and that sure helped bring out my inner white man’s racism, which manifested itself in voting for George Wallace. Of course we’ve hopefully matured since then, but there was some pride standing up against bullying on the job and not backing down when told I was one dead honkey mofo.
I hope that zombie from http://www.zombietime.com will be at the convention site bringing us great photos.
IMHO the police should not tolerate anarchy from anyone. Or even law-breaking like the pink code cretins. I recall cities burning post-MLK assassination and how Philly was mostly unscathed under the leadership of cop commish Frank Rizzo. Friends and I drove around Norristown, Pa. and saw cops standing on corners with shotguns- no riots there.
Anyone recall conservatives showing their butts in the way the moonbats seem driven to act?
The Wallace voters were ticked off at the Democrats, that’s why they were voting for Wallace. Without Wallace to vote for, they would have either stayed home or voted for Nixon.
Of course, next time around the Democrats fielded McGovern and Nixon won in a landslide.
After ‘68 the Democrats changed the delegate rules and the Left started taking over their party.
Gonna be interesting…
Left on Left crimes….a new era (new Lows that is) in the Demo-Crap party.
I am sure that Mayor Hickenlooper will welcome the chaos and mahem. After all, he has turned Denver into a sanctuary city, which policy apparently assisted him in his restaurant operations. An illegal immigrant who killed a police officer in Denver was employed by Hickenlooper.http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_3768485,00.html
Add the impact of the Democratic Convention serving as a “nut magnet” for all species of brain damaged liberals with a tendency toward violent protest, to the masses of illegal aliens taking sanctuary in the city of Denver, and you have the elements for utter chaos. I seriously doubt that enough law enforcement resources can be mustered to deal with the potential issues arising from the formmation of critical mass in the cauldron of liberal anarchy.
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_3768485,00.html
Not the party itself, but certainly the people who were there who now run the party. The point is that they were the ones who pushed voters away from the Democrat Party. Democrats had held the White House for seven out of nine terms prior to that, only three terms since.
Precisely the reason for the current intraparty battle, which of course we are all enjoying as spectator sport.
I was wondering if anyone else would recall the “Cage of Freedom” from the donkeys’ 2004 convention.
I don’t expect the nouveau ‘68 anarchists to do much of anything to disrupt the donkey convention this year. They have too much at stake in the consequences of a donkey win (e.g., losing the war) to really want to screw it up.
In the end, they’ll shuffle meekly into the cage, or pen, or whatever the donkeys will shunt them into, and save their real display of hatred and violence for the Republican convention.
For all the talk about democracy from the left-wingers, they sure are totalitarian when it comes to forcing the party agenda on the voters.
Jim M - Hickenlooper is Mayor now? When I lived there (90’s)he just ran the brew pup. Quite a leap!
I loved Denver when I was there, didn’t seem to be so many kooks. I always thought I’d like to move back but could never afford the housing now.
Zombietime is good, but I think we have a runner-up person in Denver already called randomridge. Read all the comments, she’s good. But, I’d love for zombietime to come to Denver too.
Did anyone tell these folks it’s 2008, and not 1968?
The cops can bring the clubs, hoses, tear gas, and plastic bullets, I’ll bring the popcorn. Peaceful protest is one thing, plans to riot are something else.
Note to self, order a case of popcorn for the democrap convention week. These wingnuts should make for real great theatre.
Of course the floor fights should be historic or histrionic.
Drunkablog, Slapstick Politics (me), and randomridge will all be there–
More on Glenn Spagnuolo and Recreate ‘68 here.
I come from Chicago. In 1968 I was in the Air Force at Clark AFB (Philippines) supporting the heros in Jungle Hell. I remember the news footage and print footage of the Chicago convention. Probably 70% of the protesters would have made it simply a Woodstock-like event and gone home. However the other 30% were like this a$$hat and started busting windows and screaming and throwing things at cops. Chicago cops. You don’t do that to Chicago cops for free. That’s why I still like Chicago. Get nasty, get a hardwood shampoo. Rock on Chicago. Denver is not Chicago. Bring extra adult beverages and popcorn.
Nope, its just drunk already, again.
plus Shooter and possibly Romeo13.
Got an email?
slapstickpolitics (at) gmail (dot) com.
The Democrats have fed this beast and now they must live with their animals.
I sincerely doubt there will be 50,000 antiwar protesters at the Dems’ clambake, but the ones who do show are probably going to get violent. Spagnulo better have his bail bondsman on speed dial.
You mean the Chicago cops that bragged to me (in 1970) about roaming the streets in black neighborhoods and beating up any black man they would see walking alone. You mean those Chicago cops?
Or do you mean the Chicago cops that hired a classmate of my brother to steal cars, so they could strip them and sell the parts(Daley’s Bridgeport Neighborhood)?
Or do you mean the Chicago cop that started a race riot at my high school (Lindblom), as a senior only to return to the school the next year(it was his beat)?
I never said I participated. I did watch this with interest however. I would have to put you into the useless idiot however. You obviously do not even understand that the country belongs to the citizens and not to the politicians. You would make a very good citizen in a communist nation.
Wow, I just can’t wait. Maybe they’ll give us the week off so that we don’t have to try and get to work through that mess.
When things blow up and the cops have to start beating your pointy little heads in ala Chicago ‘68, don’t blame us for it!
You May be onto something there. Democrats appear to have a problem putting dates into context. Someone should by them calendars..
They want to relive the 60’s at almost every turn, and thier foreign policy ideas are deeply rooted in a Pre 9/11 mindset.
I sense a Back to The Future IV screenplay needs to be in the works….or at least a sort of Campaign commercial.
Why did the student protests fizzle out once the draft was ended? [The true reason for their interest ended.]
Why did the left-wing elites continue to work against the South Vietnamese after the US had withdrawn? [They wanted the Communists to win.]
How many battles did the US forces lose? [ZERO]
How many people died after the fall of Saigon despite left-wing assurances of no impending bloodbath? [MILLIONS]
Yeah - It’s not my fault if the protesters get violent after I stir them up. It’s not my fault that I’m able to get a bunch of professional thugs to recreate the chaos that ensued at the 1968 Democratic Convention.
SHEESH! You guys are so 40 years ago and pathetic!
The best thing that could (but won’t) happen is have the MSM ignore the whole lot but report about the arrests made by these self-annointed vigilantes.
Correction: Should have read:
The best thing that could (but won’t) happen is have the MSM ignore the whole lot but report about the arrests made against these self-annointed vigilantes.
A little off content, but this is a good reminder of just how the Demograft Party delivers on the promises of their candidates!
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon; (Hillary, and the Dem’s were going to “fix” this, remember?)
3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:
1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) the cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
7) The value of the U.S. dollar has plummeted.
America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!
My, I bet Denver, yet another city trying to fit into the far-left mold, must be so proud of the chaos, remonstrations, and drama the Dems and their splinter groups will bring them. It’s ironic that the Dems’ machinations will “blow up” in their faces. Is the revenue this little shindig going to provide Denver worth this kind of pain?
It’s nice to see how “accommodating” Denver is for any moonbat ready for a protest…

Exactly.
I remember - I was in high school/college then.
The protests stopped as if a switch had been flicked the instant the military became all-volunteer.

Excellent summary, which shows, yet again, that the Democrats - er, Socialists, rather, for that is what they are - are either irremediably, hopelessly stupid; or uncontrollably, dangerously power-hungry;…or both.
Call out the Colorado National Guard. They may know a thing or two about dealing with crowds. You ID the guy who is calling the shots, force your way through to him, thump him once or twice for resisting, and then zip him up and drag him away. The crowd will soon peter out. Or you can handle it Kent State-style.
Granite,
Good use of the name Demograft. I don’t believe that I have seen that one before.
This makes me all tingly inside.
I want to see Cindy Sheehan throwing bags of poo at riot police.
Could someone please invent an emoticon for a middle-aged man smiling and munching pop-corn? I’d like to sign all of my comments with that until the end of the Democratic Convention.
Denver is not a “far left” city. Denver proper is blue by and large, but fairly moderately so. The surrounding suburbs and rural areas are decidedly red. Denver is a typical Rocky Mountain city in that moderation and pragmatism reigns over ideology.

Wonderful! This fits in perfectly with my “40 yrs in the wilderness theory”… the libs have been trying to re-live their glory days for decades now… let this be the last hurrah.
misterP appears to be a troll. Either the cops were pulling his leg or this is all fiction. So what else is new in trolltown?
OK, name them.
I so worry for my city.

Friend of Ward Churchill, eh? Well, that sure tells the story, doesn’t it!
