The beating on the Baltimore bus: Judge rules five students guilty; More: Teens stonewalled police, mocked beating

By Michelle Malkin  •  March 21, 2008 11:01 AM

A follow-up to the racially-tinged assault of Sarah Kreager on a Baltimore bus. The judge in the case ruled five students guilty yesterday:

A Baltimore juvenile court judge found five Robert Poole Middle School students responsible yesterday in the December attack on a city bus passenger and her boyfriend, concluding a divisive case fraught with racial overtones.

Judge David W. Young’s decision followed nearly two months of court hearings on the Dec. 4 fight in Hampden, described by several 911 callers as a riot. The attack prompted stricter safety standards on city buses and left Sarah Kreager, 26, with two broken bones around her left eye.

Nine black teens were initially accused of “rising up en masse” and attacking Kreager on the No. 27 bus after school had let out for the day.

Defense attorneys argued that Kreager’s left eye was already bruised when she boarded the bus and that when the students began snickering at her, Kreager’s boyfriend, Troy Ennis, ordered her “to spit on them [racial slur].”

But prosecutors said the youths attacked Kreager, who is white, after her boyfriend accused one of them of immaturity for refusing to relinquish an empty seat.

“We’re pleased the judge was able to reach justice and that Sarah Kreager and Troy Ennis have been vindicated,” Janet Hankin, the lead prosecutor in the case, said after the hearing. “This was a brutal, vicious and unnecessary beating, and what the respondents accused them of was untrue, unfair and uncalled for.”

Will they learn their lesson? Read the last line of the article:

…in the end, it was one of the accused’s own statements to police that captured the hatred the students felt for Kreager, Hankin argued.

Police asked one of the boys, a 15-year-old, how he felt about “the victims being assaulted? One being in the hospital?”

The boy replied, “I don’t feel no … I don’t feel nothing.”

Kreager has had a hard life. Her face has healed and she’s trying to rebuild.

More:

In interrogation rooms, detectives faced off against recalcitrant children as young as 14 who remained defiant even as interrogators threatened them with adult charges and warned that their friends might be giving them up in a room next door.

One 14-year-old boy repeatedly told a Maryland Transit Administration Police sergeant that he saw the fight on the No. 27 bus in Hampden but couldn’t name the people involved.

“They go to my school, but I don’t hang with them,” he said after the officer insinuated that he was lying because the boy refused to make eye contact.

“You know the guys you catch the bus with all the time,” the sergeant said. “You see their faces all the time. Even if you don’t know their last names, you know their first names. Is it that you don’t want to tell me, is that it?”

The boy answered: “No, I ain’t going to put them out there like that.”

Hundreds of pages of documents obtained by The Sun recount police interviews in which the Robert Poole Middle School students accused in the December attack on Sarah Kreager and her boyfriend, Troy Ennis, tried to stonewall authorities.

Girls told stories that didn’t match, and at one point, while they were in a holding cell, a city police officer watched them mimic the beating they were accused of carrying out — laughing as they threw kicks and punches into the air.

I don’t think there is anything salvageable about him based on this statement. How do you make someone feel remorse for something they obviously don’t see as inappropriate, lawless behavior?

Sadly, being a black youth and doing jail time, will garner them a backstage pass at the BET awards when they are released back into society.

30, I hope this isn’t true (for the good of his family, his community, and himself) but, given that today’s young people receive so little moral guidance and encouragement from our society and institutions, I have to admit you’re probably right.

“How do you make someone feel remorse for something they obviously don’t see as inappropriate, lawless behavior?”

I feel that way myself. Through the years I have taught so many students who hold the same “I don’t care” attitude as the young man in the article, and nearly all of them were white. It is disturbing how cold and uncaring they can be in the way they treat their families and one another; it’s as if they’re emotionless, mind-numbed robots.

I just wish when the Feds decided to remove the “controversial influences” of the Christian religion from our classrooms, they would have left something behind to fill the moral void.

Eighteen months of doctors & hospitals took care of the physical stuff, but the mental took a lot longer. Only on the past 3 years has she been able to go anywhere alone, and then only on the daytime. Every time she looks in a mirror, she’s reminded of that day.

The first literary reference that came to my mind was Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, in which - 49 years ago - he predicted with chilling accuracy the decay of civilized mores in Western societies and the resultant rise of a violent street gang subculture.

If you take Heinlein’s claim that “Mankind has no moral instinct” as axiomatic, then another good read is Lord of the Flies.

The middle-school aged attackers in the present case seem as if they somehow jumped straight from the pages of those two books.

Hey 30, how are ya? I couldn’t agree more with you. When I was a substitute teacher, I saw how many students (of all racial backgrounds) had a complete disregard for education. I was subbing some high school remedial English class (for the students who failed the regular English class) and I saw that this one black male student wasn’t doing his work. I asked him why he wasn’t. He replied, “I don’t need some white b*tch telling me what to do.” As you can imagine, I was completely taken aback. I then promptly wrote him up and kindly suggested getting back to the work at hand. He then told me the following, “I don’t need school. I could go out on the street and sell drugs.”

Whether the kid was just spouting off for shock value I can’t say. He was pretty hostile to me (and I barely said boo to him). Given my instinctual feeling that the situation wasn’t going to get any better, I called for security, who promptly showed up (this kid had issues with other teachers and not just the subs I was to learn later). I handed the kid his write up (kids get a copy of any write ups any teacher gives them in the school district I worked for) and I told him, “There’s the door. Have fun!”

This experience has stuck with me and one of the prime motivators in why I never subbed at this school again… and stopped teaching after my husband and I moved away from Colorado for another military post. /sigh

It has to come from those who are entrenched in it. I can’t help you, if you won’t help yourself. And I won’t help you if you feel my life is meaningless to you.

I grew up in North Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. It was bad then and it is worse now. I don’t go back anymore. It’s too painful. I don’t know how I made it out or even why. Perhaps, that’s a chapter of my life that God will disclose to me when the time is right. Nevertheless, I cannot blame you for your actions that day or since. He thinks selling drugs was the best way for his life, well, so be it. That line of work isn’t designed for him or anyone else to make it out. It’s sad commentary that school is frowned upon and selling drugs is exalted.

I sent mine through the Ca. public schools, might as well have them battle hardened, and they came out fine. Of course I raised them on old movies pointing out the stark realities that they portray, classic literature, personal accountability and patriotism. I planted the stars and stripes squarely in the chest of the leftist ideology. I stayed involved I trusted no one to relay the truth and I made my views well known. I really miss the days when I could sit down and watch some lib discovery bs and pause it here and there to blast their argument out of the water. I still tell them things like, you going to the movies, well you must support the terrorists! I remember one time that well I can’t recall exactly what it was that had happened at the school, and I said that the school was no different than the Taliban. I thought they were going to cry right there (how could dad call our school the Taliban?) but it didn’t take long for them to see it my way. The true test to see if the law has done it’s job will be in the sentencing. I’m sure since they are poor, inner city, black kids, underprivileged, fatherless, grown up having a “difficult time of it” there will be a slap on the wrist, therefore supporting the attitude of the boy who so profoundly showed who and what he has become by saying…“I don’t feel no … I don’t feel nothing.”
He represents a great example of the left feel good crap that is destroying America. The lawyers and psychologists will say he is the product of his environment it’s not his fault. IHMO, I have to ask myself are not we all products of our environments? Does this justify our criminal actions towards other humans…I think not. When growing up we learn( 2 parent family or not) what the laws are and what is expected of us, we learn what is right and wrong…blaming one’s upbringing is excusing bad, anti-social behavior for what is WRONG.

My advice when confronted by teens on the prowl is to back down, gently. She or her boyfriend only had to look angrily at them, or use a couple negative words, such as simply saying “grow up” to spark this. Any forceful action in words or body movements can launch a savage beating nowadays. It’s often just a case of being in the wrong pace at the wrong time. I’ve known people who were beaten (even pistol-whipped and stabbed) by thuggish black groups and white groups–just for the sport of it. It’s the Lord of the Flies mentality. I’m white, and I’ve fled beatings by white groups twice; once in the 70s when I was a teenager and then again in the mid 80s.

When will Mr. Sex Tape himself Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor of Detroit, be booted out of office? It was recently found out that he’d lied about an affair he had had with a staffer/aid when he was under oath. If you have jokers like this guy running one of our “inner cities” then what hope is there for its youth? Kilpatrick is a shining example of inner city leadership (or its worst) in action.

What you never hear is that the honorable Kwame could have settled the lawsuit for $100,000. He told them to shove it, lost the lawsuit and now Detroit citizens are liable for the $9 Million settlement from that trial.

The arrogant crap weasel could have saved the city $8,900,000.

My parents grew up in Flint. My mom on West Flint Park Blvd and my dad on Pierson Rd.

IIRC - W Flint Park is about 5 miles long. Growing up it was a safe neighborhood. The year my grandmother moved out of the house she’d lived in for over 60 years there were 3 murders on WFP Blvd.

Until Michigan stops raising taxes when the economy dips things will only get worse. My uncle, a near rabid liberal was complaining last year that the Michigan economy was tanking again and they had the nations highest unemployment. I usually avoid politics with him becuase he takes it so personally, but I couldn’t help it. I said, “So stop electing idiots who think that taking ever-increasing amounts of profit away from businesses will mean more jobs.” He stared at me and I’ll never forget it, he said, “You might be right.”

If my uncle could see the light a few months before cancer claimed him, perhaps there is hope for these kids. Repeated negative consequences can bring clarity.

This episode is typical of the type of cooperation, or rather lack thereof, that the police in our country have to deal with.

The “black community” has never, in recent history, cooperated with police to prosecute those involved in homicides, even when eyewitnesses are present. “I didn’t see nothing!” is the much practiced response from these afro-centirc anarchists. But boy, have them feel slighted, or called a derivative of the word “negro” by a white person, and they are quick to demand justice!

This is a problem that will never be solved as long as there is black racism, much of which is promilgated by the likes of Jerry Wright, Al Sharpton, Jesse, Malik Shabazz, Major Owens, and others, too many to name. They say they want to move beyond race, but do everything in their power to keep us right there, even demanding reparations for what the white man did to them. Excuse me?

How about demanding reparations from the descendants of the black, and Islamic “slavers” that sold the African villagers into slavery in the first place? Yeah, don’t hold your breath!

This is exactly why I am shocked these bus thugs were convicted.

Many blacks caught red handed (OJ) just simply lie and then cry racism, like Kwame the idiot did recently with his fake threats on his sorry life.

Bet the prosecuter is too cowardly to go after Kwame because of what he gives to the citizens of Detroit and Michigan.

Think of a generation of blacks who have been spoonfed blood libels against whites for all of their lives. The “aids was invented by whites to commit genocide against blacks” theory was not invented by Jeremiah Wright, it is very commonly accepted in the black community. This is a perfect example of how black racism is alive and well. White people live under constant, daily fear of being attacked by vicious, primitive, sub-humans just like these. When will this end? Why doesn’t the black community we hear so much about - you know, the proud, intelligent, hard working, righteous, “black community” - rise up and put a stop to this never ending, mindless, ignorant violence?
Because they cannot. They cannot help being violent - it is what they are. And the few who manage to resist their urges to do violence to others, nevertheless feel such a strong kinship to the thugs, that they are compelled to argue on their behalf. As B. Hussein made clear, it’s simply payback Whitey. Get used to it.

We are often told that white on black crime is mainly due to racism, and that black on white crime is mainly due to economics.

I wonder what percentage of all racial crime is due to messengers, like Jeremiah Wright, who clearly plant the message that whites are out to get blacks; thus spurring blacks to attack whites and whites to attack back.

I’ll answer, as Michelle and Laura and Sean are too scared: they are truly primitive, tribal, STUPID, people. “They” can somehow be controlled as one. Why, those blacks are just the same as you and I, but….they vote 90+% AGAINST the party that could actually help them! Those “hispanics” love America, but….if you are against ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, you will lose “their” vote. If Whites would stop being afraid of the hackneyed term “racist”, we could actually start solving some stuff.
