A Hillary superdelegate wavers?

Hillary superdelegate Maria Cantwell, the Democrat US Sen. from Washington state, looks like she’s softening up to Barack Obama.

I imagine she’s going to get a red phone call from Sen. Clinton soon.

Watch out, Maria:

U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, one of Washington’s 17 Democratic superdelegates, isn’t ready to shift her allegiance from Sen. Hillary Clinton to Sen. Barack Obama — yet.

But in an interview with The Columbian’s editorial board Monday, she said the candidate with the most pledged delegates at the end of the primary season in late June will have the strongest claim to the party’s presidential nomination.

“I definitely don’t want the superdelegates to be the deciding factor,” she said.

The Democratic party should come together around the candidate with the most popular votes, the most states won and the most delegates, Cantwell said. The pledged delegate count will be the most important factor, she said, because that is the basis of the nominating process.

Obama leads Clinton in pledged delegates, in the popular vote and in the number of state primaries and caucuses he has won. Most political observers say the party’s rules of proportionality mean Clinton has virtually no chance of overtaking Obama in the pledged delegate count in the 10 primaries that remain.

Clinton argues that she has won more of the big industrial states that Democrats must take to win in November and has momentum on her side.
Cantwell and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., both endorsed Clinton several months ago.

Cantwell said she wouldn’t object to a primary contest that went into the summer if it focused on the issues facing the nation, but added, “We wouldn’t want to tear apart the party.”

A bit late for that, I think.

Then all republicans would be branded as racists.

“…if it focused on the issues facing the nation… .”

Since when has this country ever held election that was focused solely on the issues? NEVER! As we do not know the candidates personally, how else are we to judge their character and fitness for office except through their histories and past decisions.

I wonder if there will be some sort of revolt in the DNC if the super delegates go against the will of the people..

but then, that would mean that the people of the DNC would have to think and realize that the super delegate issue is another way the elites of the party get their way..

    Funny you should mention that.
Newsbusters carried the story about Joy Behar stating that black people can’t be racists because they are oppressed minorities. Wait it gets better. She and Whoopi, then went on to say that Bush’s association with Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson is equivalent to Obama’s affiliation with Wright. Hasselbeck informed then that they would have a valid point if Falwell and Robertson were Bush’s pastor for 20 yrs. Dems are quick to whip out the moral equivalency card no matter how off base they may be. They do not see matters as right vs wrong. It’s always Dem vs. Rep.

What is fair & democratic about staggered primaries so that only little states like Iowa & NH get to vote first & by the time the primary comes to our state there are no choices left? What is fair & democratic about delgates & super delgates who then decide further who we get to vote for?
IMHO all primaries should be on the same day so we can at least feel that we had a chance to vote for our choice. And I don’t get this delgate thing at all.

Excerpts from a comment on the above-referenced story in The Columbian:

“…I hope Senator Cantwell will change her mind and support frontrunner Barack Obama in his historic, ground-breaking campaign for the presidency.”

“I was a precinct captain for the Obama campaign in my small town of Camas, Wa. In over 30 years of voting, I have never seen anything like the enthusiasm and excitement that this campaign has generated. We had democrats and republicans, young and old, black and white united for change like never before.”

“The supers should reaffirm the will of the majority, support the democratic process, and vote with the majority of democrats to join this unprecedented movement for political transformation.”

So, folks should vote for Obama because his campaign is “historic, ground-breaking”?; because his campaign has generated “enthusiasm and excitement?; because it is an “unprecedented movement for political transformation”?

Exactly what “change”, what kind of “unprecedented political transformation”, is the commenter so breathlessly excited about?

Sure sounds rather like adolescent infatuation – this is what some voters are going to base their decision upon?

Our already onerous tax burden will be further increased; the danger we already face in this world will be further heightened; because of a crush on someone who has about him an aura of “change” and “unprecendented political transformation”?

Sorry, readers…but yet one more example (as if one more were needed) of why the fact that each American’s vote counts just as much as that of every other American is at the same time our greatest strength; and – as illustrated above – our greatest weakness.

    Very scary.

    Pray for our country.

BULLCHIPS! The mere fact that superdelegates can get paid is enough to make one want to puke over the whole situation (on both sides of the aisle). Unfortunately for Republican superdelegates, there is no need to buy them as McCain was forced on us so they are not going to be a factor.

This senator is sending Shill a message: “I want more money” and that is fact. The Dimocrap nomination will be decided by who buys the most superdelegates. I would love any liberal/Democrat to refute this statement.

Do you think they are singing this over at Hillary Central:

    Maria Lyrics

She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee
Her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass
    And whistles on the stair
    And underneath her wimple
She has curlers in her hair
I even heard her singing in the abbey

    She’s always late for chapel
    But her penitence is real
    She’s always late for everything
    Except for every meal
I hate to have to say it
    But I very firmly feel
Maria’s not an asset to the abbey

I’d like to say a word in her behalf
    Maria makes me laugh

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
    A flibbertijibbet! A will-o’-the wisp! A clown!

Many a thing you know you’d like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

When I’m with her I’m confused
    Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
    Unpredictable as weather
She’s as flighty as a feather
    She’s a darling! She’s a demon! She’s a lamb!

    She’d outpester any pest
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
    She’s a riddle! She’s a child!
    She’s a headache! She’s an angel!
    She’s a girl!

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
    A flibbertijibbet! A will-o’-the wisp! A clown!

    Agreed.

I have little doubt that the consequences would be not unlike the way the Russian Communist revolutionaries and the Nazis treated their INTRAparty rivals; with vengefulness, ferocity, ruthlessness, and without mercy…if not literally, you can bet figuratively.
